Re: A Beginner's Guide to Charms
Well, unfortunately, the fact that not all players worry about the 'cinematic' value of game mechanics and some (I'd say more, sometimes) are solely out to make the best character possible.

Ah - the problem isn't the system then, its the players. lol

Re: A Beginner's Guide to Charms
Well, it's more correct, in my opinion, to say it's a system problem caused by players, but you're correct.

Troupe-Style/ Circle-Style Play
Way back in the heady days of Vampire, the Masquerade, the creators of Exalted toyed with a concept called Troupe-style play. Essentially, it was turn-taking in playing the role of the GM, where each player played one of their two characters.  It was a good system, and led to diverse games. The only problem I found was meta plot suffered.

Following discussions about sharing the role of GM between players, I feel I need to clarify what I mean - I think its game rules, which means its crunch.

I envision the following, but am totally up to modify, change or scrap anything so that it fits a collective vision:

Circle Style Play
Each player recives a moderator account on the host game (if mod accounts allow you to examine character sheets, im not sure). Each player takes the role of either two characters of two different types, or a single Solar Exalt. They post the history and hooks for the character in a place where everyone can see it.

Players communicate with one another about what sort of stories they want to play in, about the overall metaplot, and about what the final aim is for the group in the coming couple of months. This is redrafted by one of the Circle and posted in a notice.

Players each volunteer to run a single strand of the different things going on in which they are not playing. Players get experience for each thread they GM as well as each thread they play in. The abstract xp is a reward for helping the rest of the circle out, and while abstract, facilitates a fairer system.

People play, and enjoy.

Some players might also volunteer to play important NPCs, such and Merela or Brigid, and might crop up in scenes that they wouldn't otherwise be in. This is accpetable.

Finally, at the end of a 'arc' after two or three (or four months), players stop, agree on xp rewards as a circle, and plan the next arc.

One Circle member takes the role of administrator to host the game and ensure fairness etc.

I REALLY WOULD LIKE FEEDBACK ON THIS

Re: Troupe-Style/ Circle-Style Play
Thats the thing though Flare - we all dont feel that we want to run it, or someone would have stepped forward already and gone "here is the game, Rtj please".  I feel the same way - i can bearley run a game for 5 players in exalted. It is daunting.

But look at it this way, would you rather have a go by yourself, or with others around to help you out?

Plus, if people truly commit to the game, and put the effort in to facilitate other people's enjoyment, why shouldn't they reap the benefits too?

Troupe/Circle style is...well, it's basically playing pretend.

It's what RPGs are about.

Re: Troupe-Style/ Circle-Style Play
*Nods*

But it is slightly more open than a game might otherwise be. I can see situations where I might really want to run, say, a sinister plot involving a forbidden god and his murdering ways and i need to find ways of tying it with other players.

Other players might want to have a simple jaunt to Malfeas to mock Elloge or go on safari... and they might need a gm for that... so, its kinda much more about negotiation and exploring the setting from both sides of the game.

Re: Troupe-Style/ Circle-Style Play
Troupe/Circle play is a lot more collaborative and it removes much of the burden from a single GM. I think it's a really good option for a game like this.

As long as there are a decent number of people willing to take some GM duties, not everyone absolutely has to do it.

True - and even then, not everyone has to do a thread alone. Working as a pair to ensure a great scene could conceivably work much better than working alone! :)

Well, I'd be willing to try. But I don't want to be penalized if I'm not able to :)

Re: Troupe-Style/ Circle-Style Play
Flare, as I understand it, you want to NPC Merela - thats quite a challenge, given that she is the RULER OF EVERYTHING on Creation. So, you'll be in scenes were you might be discussing 'next moves' (ie handing out assignments) or adjudicating duels (which she loved to watch). That is a GM role.

And no, we wont penalize, but I do think that a regard for other players needs to be rewarded in a game with no overall GM, don't you?

Re: Troupe-Style/ Circle-Style Play
Actually, she was given the Creation-Ruling-Mandate by the UCS. She rules everything on Creation (in name) while he ruled everythign in heaven. Basically, he gave her the go-ahead to conqor the world and unite it under the rule of the Solars.

And she did, almost, until the civil war broke out in 109.

OMG - ive become an expert on the dates of the Ochre Fountain period! eeek!

Re: Troupe-Style/ Circle-Style Play
She had the Mandate, but there were other kingdoms.
Lands of Creation, p 12:
Of the independent kingdoms founded in the lands beyond the Ochre Fountain, few records now remain. All agree that they were undoubtedly glorious, as all Solar kingdoms are, yet none were so magnificent as to eclipse, or even rival Merela's nation.

I think it's a good thing. It provides more potential opponents.

Oh yes - I agree. Harbourhead was one such kingdom, and the Bull god taught 100 solars how to fight... And thats not far west of Rathess...

Re: Troupe-Style/ Circle-Style Play
I thought we were -playing- powerful, key figures when I said that, not the small fries. I've had several other character ideas being tossed out now that I'm getting the idea.

In any case, I'm willing to give it a try.

I don't think the PCs are going to be small fry, exactly, just not Merela herself. There's only one, after all. ^_^

Im glad people are still interested, but im having difficulty making myself clear it seems. Im going to go quiet for a few hours/ maybe a day. I fell today, hurting my recently shattered leg, and the painkillers are miaking me very ill. I wouldn't care, i took the last one 10 hours ago, and Im still not well. I'll be around if you want to ask me questions, but other than that, im going to shut up.

Re: Troupe-Style/ Circle-Style Play
Sidereal Ox Body and Excellencies depress me... The first age game shot down all my Solar Ideas, so I made a Sidereal one.. but I do want her to be the sort not to turn tail and avoidance kata when things look bad, and they're throughing 'well you have SMA'  in my face anytime I try and suggest a system fix for Sidereals.

No, I don't~! AGH!

I'm the only one over there looking for a Sidereal Character, and I'm working outnumbered.

Do you actually need the rules or just a citation?
