The Cathedral of Dooooom!!!!

Ahead of Trejo, the room opened up into a crypt. Bones were piled in niches and the air reeked of decay. This was pretty unusual construction; he was pretty sure a modern American church, even a Catholic one, wouldn't have an actual crypt like it would in Europe.

The room was dimly lit by a hundred black candles, most planted on human skulls but many on goats and mutated or twisted-looking cattle.

He could a large figure standing at the far end of the room, a skeleton with red jeweled eyes, dressed in the robes and vestments of a Catholic Bishop... an Anti-Bishop, he guessed. The skeleton was holding aloft a massive hand-and-a-half sword of obvious quality and antiquity.

Quick as lightning, Trejo drew his machete, but deep in shadowed niches on either side of him two bolts of Hellfire struck him, stunning him. He fell to his knees, unable to react.

"Ha! Another Templar to send to the fires of Hell! That makes three, two today alone! I want him unharmed! When we sacrifice him with the sword of the first Templar, my power will be complete and I will be invincible!"

Insane maniacal laughter followed, which would have pissed Trejo off to no end if he wasn't being currently hog-tied by two of the bitches he'd previously been stalking through the irradiated rubble of the city. He tried to clear his head and resist but his body wasn't responding in a coordinated fashion. Also, as cliche as the Anti-Bishop's speech and laughter might have seemed, in the un-Holy Wasted West there might be more than a grain of truth in that mad rambling. Especially if the fiend truly held a powerful Templar blade as he claimed...

Upstairs, the group was halfway to the altar when they beheld a strange procession exiting what looked to be a small stairwell door off to the right.

Leading was someone in Bishop's robes... but his face looked strange, and his eyes glowed red. He held a gigantic sword. Following him were two of the robed cultists, struggling to carry between them a very large man hog-tied and struggling.

They were coming from the right, then heading down the central aisle towards the blood-soaked altar at the far north end of the church in the Apse. They would reach it before the Posse did (assuming they didn't pick up the pace any).

The skeleton-Bishop spotted the Posse, and urged his minions to carry their burden faster ahead of him. He half-turned to block the Posse's progress, still backing towards the Apse and the Altar at the far end of the Cathedral. It was clear he intended to keep moving but hopefully slow the Posse down so his cultists could place their burden on the Altar before the Posse could interfere.

Rowan Moves to cover and casts the first of her bolts directly at the Skeleton-Bishop. Using the first of the two Skulls, then will cast the second if that Joker is still in play allowing her a second action.

Not stunned by the image of the Unholy Bishop, Michaela instead stared at him. She felt the fury rising but instead channeled her anger into a fearsome concentration.

Feeling more centred, she was now more ready to act (and react) as needed.

Current Cards:

Ace:    Anti-Bishop

King:   Trejo (1 Action)

Eight:  Michaela (2 Actions)

Seven:  Smoker (1 Action), Roadkill (0 Actions, Queasy)

Six:    Rowan (1 Action)

Four:   Evil Coven Members

Action Summary:

The Bishop stopped and waited for the posse to advance. Smoker fumbled with his FN, trying to get it ready, but the fear and horror of the Anti-Bishop had shaken him. He partially crouched behind a pew, trying to compose himself.  Unnerved himself at this fresh Hell, Roadkill is unable to pull the trigger or even aim, as his hand was shaking too violently. Deciding to be more cautious than her Templar, Michaela, the Squire, got ready to dodge before moving in.

Looking down at the pews around her, Rowan noticed that this far in the cathedral there were many of piles of charred bones (including blackened skulls) lying on or between them. Plenty of ammunition for her Eldritch Blast! This was fortunate, as the range was currently around 50 yards away, making it a very difficult throw for a heavy skull. Her Eldritch barely went over 8-10 yards, she would have to seriously close the distance to be effective with the heavier missiles.

As the two robed cultists carried him towards the altar, Trejo struggled but couldn't seem to make headway against their undead grip.

Next Card:

New Turn, Roll for Quickness, TN 10.
If you get under 10 you have 1 Action, 10 or over is 2 Actions.

The undead harpies latched onto his upper body with steel-like talons, pinning his arms to his side and continuing to drag him towards the bloodstained Altar.

Ten:    Trejo (2)

Seven:  Anti-Bishop 3 +  (Hole Card)

Five:   2x Evil Cultists 3 + Hole Card), Smoker (2)

Four:   Michaela (2 + Hole Card)

Action Summary:

The Anti-Bishop slowly paced backwards, keeping himself in between his intended sacrifice (Trejo) and Trejo's would-be rescuers.

Tearing himself from the grasp of his captors, Trejo hit the ground and started to crawl towards the altar. With dismay he realised his weapons and gear was a good 15 yards or so away. He got a few yards before he felt talon-tipped fingers grabbing for his legs.  With a quickness he felt unsettling, they both grabbed him by the shoulders, and lifting him dragged him 6 yards further towards the altar.

Behind a pew towards the rear of the unholy church, Smoker aimed at the Bishop's head. They'd all learned that as someone who was undead, this was probably his vulnerable spot. Now, other undead might not be vulnerable in exactly the same way, but they'd cross that bridge when they came to it! He was at about 60 yards out. Whatever effect/stealth field/magic that the robed ones outside possessed, he seemed to have it as well, making him more difficult to hit. [Marshall's Note: -3 for headshot, -3 for range (single shot), -4 for Cloak o' Dooom, +2 per Action spent Aiming.]

Flicking her Commando SMG to single shots, Michaela aimed and fired past the anti-Bishop at the closest cloaked figure bending over Trejo. She knew to aim for the head, that's the only thing that seemed to work before. All the evil ones still seemed to have whatever it was that made them hard to aim at switched on. Michaela was not really a marksman other than what her US Marine Sergeant daddy had taught her, she was more of a swords-woman, so her shot went wild.

Realising that she needed to close the distance and engage her opponents with cold steel, she took off down the centre aisle at a dead run (traveling 26 yards, leaving her 34 yards from the Bishop and about 50 from Trejo and his captors).

She prays under her breath "Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, lesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae."**

and in her full voice "AMEN"

After the Amen, Michaela charges the Anti-Bishop (next round)

- I know that Michaela will not get to the Anti-Bishop this round.  I am doing a set up so that the next round she will be in the best position to attack the Anti-Bishop next round.

- keeps an action open for a dodge

Current Cards:

Queen:  Smoker (3 Actions), Roadkill (2 Actions) Bad Guys (4 Actions) Simultaneous with Roadkill.

Eight:  Rowan (2 Actions)

Six:    Michaela (5 Actions) (OOC: My mistake, there are a maximum of 5 Actions in a turn.)

Action Summary:

Aiming and firing, Smoker saw the Anti-Bishop flinch and duck down as the bullet struck him in the side of his bony face. The slug exited out the rear side of its skull but wasn't a square hit. The Anti-Bishop seemed to shrug it off and kept backing up, but he was a little staggered by the blow.

Roadkill moved forward as well, firing a single shot from his SMG as he walked. The shot missed, whining off into the recesses of the cathedral.

As Michaela sprinted down the centre aisle, she could see that time was running out for the sacrificial victim. She moved sideways a little along one of the rows of pews, then continued forward in a side aisle to get out of the direct line of fire but in position to attack. She knew at this point that hot lead firearms would be of less use to her than cold steel, so she slid the SMG into its holster and gripped her Katana with both hands, getting ready to make her finalt do-or-die assault.  Behind her by quite a bit followed Rowan, hoping to get close enough to launch her missiles and hoping she wouldn't be too late!

Hearing her prayer, the Anti-Bishop laughed and said with an implied sneer, "where is your absent God and his Virgin whore now? Come any closer, little girl, and I'll send you to Hell where you can meet them in person!" Despite his fearsome nature and the dire circumstances, if anything his taunt seemed to harden her resolve instead of unnerving her.

In the niche at the far end of the cathedral, Trejo he knew his time was drawing close. His tormentors, the two robed cultists, grabbed him and carried-threw him onto the blood-soaked altar beside the ancient-looking leather-bound tome that sat on a wrought-iron reading stand. With a cackle, both shot green bolts at him to take some of the fight out of him.

The Anti-Bishop continued to back up as well, then when Trejo was on the altar he prepared to strike the death-blow in order to sacrifice him to the Reckoners!

Action Summary:

In a blizzard of motion, Trejo rolled off the altar, dodging the green Bolts o' Doom the cultists shot at him. He quickly freed himself with his trusty machete, then savagely attacked the Anti-Bishop, who unsuccessfully tried to parry with the ancient sword. With a mighty stroke he carved a clearly fatal wound across the fiend's chest. However, no blood spurted out because the Anti-Bishop was a skeleton. Still, the Anti-Bishop staggered back against the altar and Trejo figured he must have done some kind of damage.

Seeing Michaela rush up, one of the undead cultists turned to her and unleashed a flurry of deadly green missiles.

Michaela was running so fast it thew of her (its?) aim. All four glowing balls missed her and soared off into the dingy depths of the cathedral.

Re: The Cathedral of Dooooom!!!!

The other cultist fired a series of bolts at Trejo, realising that he was the greater immediate danger to her master. She stepped up to Point Blank range and threw her four Bolts o' Doom at Trejo, hoping to wear him down. She aimed her bolts at his arms and legs, not wanting to kill him outright. That would be the Anti-Bishop's job!

Bolts hit Trejo's right and left arms, and his left leg. Pain blossomed, not the worst he'd felt but all over his body and threatening to overwhelm him.

Watching some big Mexican get pasted by green balls of death Smoker feels quite justified "on overwatch" behind a pew at the other end of the Cathedral.  He takes his time aiming at the Anti-Bishops forehead again, while keeping an eye out for incoming missiles.

The Anti-Bishop picked up his massive sword with one hand, then a stunned Trejo in the other. He threw Trejo's limp body on the unholy altar beside the ancient tome. Then raised his sword in both hands, preparing the death strike.

"Lord of Darkness, Prince of Lies, hear my prayer... I give you this puny and unworthy life so that you may grant me ultimate power! I swear to do your bidding, to bring darkness upon the Earth and aid the Reckoners with their duty to extinguish mankind from this fallen and barren world!"

Michaela seeing that Anti-Bishop is just about to strike down the person on the alter charges up.  While charging she says:
"May the Lord's hand guide me in striking down this Abomination."

With both hands on her katana she strikes the Anti-Bishop down.

"In His name, die and burn in hell. Amen"

Charging up the wide stairs to the niche that held the Altar, Michaela swung at the Anti-Bishop with all her might. He was forced to halt the immediate execution of Trejo in order to defend himself, which he did by bringing up his ancient sword and blocking her mighty blow with a shower of sparks.

Her Katana shattered with the violence of the blow on the finely-wrought Damascene blade.

"Ha, is that all you got, Templar? Where is your God n..."

The brilliantly glowing green laser spot from Roadkill's Commando SMG centred on the Anti-Bishop's forehead. It was followed by a single "Bang!" that echoed through the Cathedral, and a small hole and puff of dust appeared between and a little above his glowing eyesockets, above the nose hole. His already-weakened skull slid apart in a series of bony fragments that opened outwards like a flower, leaving only the bottom part with the jawbone attached to the top of the vertebrae.

"Urk..." The Anti-Bishop collapsed with a clatter of bones in a jumbled pile at Michaela's feet. The bones were then scattered by a burst from Rowan's AK. It was clear that he was not coming back to life again! His 2 minions collapsed as well piles of bones in tattered rage.

The sword clanged to the floor as well. Michaela and Trejo could feel something supernatural stirring nearby, something due to the supernatural essence of the Anti-Bishop. It was like some kind of miasma was escaping from the bones.

Above them, there was a single crash and tinkle as one obscene stained-glass window blew out. Then another, and another. The support beams vaulted ceiling above them started to groan as cracks appeared in them as well as spreading to the plaster walls and the roof...

Rowan places her rifle over the shoulder and runs down to where the remains of the Bishop lie scooping the bookin to her bag, and picking the sword up. Then turns yells, " Run you fools, unless you want this place to be your tombs."

Re: The Cathedral of Dooooom!!!!

The posse stumbled out the main doors, and although a slow-moving badly-wounded Trejo waved them off he needed a little help from Michaela and Roadkill to keep moving quickly to safety. Smoker rolled the still-packed motorcycle out the front doors and down the steps. Glass and debris rained down inside the building and outside. The fountain erupted in a fountain of blood. They kept going until they were safely behind Roadkill's truck.

Behind them, the cathedral started collapsing in a pile of rubble and a cloud of dust and greenish smoke. A hot wind gusted through the cracked plaza like a small tornado, rising in volume. Gravel rattled against the side of the truck. It might be that simply sheltering behind the truck wasn't enough.

Re: The Cathedral of Dooooom!!!!

With a few seconds of looking, Roadkill found the shattered remains of Selene, the head demon witch. The flesh had rotted away to dust in seconds after her "death". The blackened skull had been carved off at the neck by Arthur, just before his death. The skull and jawbone were lying next to her bones and the rags of her clothing.

Michaela ran back to Arthur's Earthly remains, avoiding the blood spurting out of the fountain. The building continued to collapse and stones and blocks bounced dangerously off the pavement nearby.

Large holes were blow in his chest, courtesy of the bolts shot from the evil Coven members. From what he'd told her recovering his sword was most important so that it could be returned to the Templar's grand lodge in Boise. Michaela started to drag his charred corpse but the vortex of destruction rising from the Cathedral would engulf her before she made it to safety if she didn't leave the body (and recover the sword) or have help from someone else.

Roadkill and Smoker were closest to her. Trejo rested in the cab of the truck, Rowan waited on his idling bike on the far side of the truck for Roadkill and the others to mount up. As the greenish vortex rose from the slowly collapsing building, Smoker's Geiger counter started to chatter ominously.

Re: The Cathedral of Dooooom!!!!

Quickly, they loaded up Arthur's body on the bike and got the Hell out of there. There wasn't much else to do but make a run for it, the whole area under the Ghost Storm was going crazy! A kind of mini-Ghost Storm was spreading out from the site of the former Cathedral.

Roadkill started the engine as everyone but Rowan loaded up. She was going to ride the ex-sacrificial Templar's bike at least out of the immediate area. Smoker climbed in back through the roof hatch, confirming that their almost-forgotten passengers (the Widow McCabe and her 2 children) were all right. They drove to where they could see the storm wall surrounding the devestated city of Wichita out to a 5-mile radius.

There was no time to contemplate anything like stopping, in seconds they would be overtaken by the maelstrom behind them. No one knew exactly what would happen, but it somehow felt that things would get very bad inside the Deadlands of Wichita

The truck and following motorcycle made it through safely, although most people felt something tearing at them inside as they penetrated the ten-yard-thick swirling barrier. It was like something (or some things) were grabbing at their souls. This was supernatural in nature, so Rowan didn't feel it any more or less than those who were in the cab of the truck.

Everyone made it through safely to the other side.
