In reply to Tech. Sgt. Airen Crichton (msg #362):

Airen picked up a flash of something behind Corndog's faded blue eyes. "Ah reckon I don't know you. I been out on the roads a lot, nodamene? Not always with the Convoy. Been all over the west."

"Iron Annie," he said, addressing a heavy-set blonde woman in his crew, "rustle up enough food for ten people for a week. We'll also cover your fuel for all vehicles, Roadkill. This is a high priority run, savvey?"

"Be here in 8 hours, 0400, an hour or so before dawn. We'll meet you here. You don't wanna travel at night, too dangerous."

"Don't worry lady, you'll get standard pay. $20 a day, Convoy scrip."

Although the Convoy traded with everyone and brought goods from a long ways away, it was a fact that paper money was still superior in most ways to barter.

For one thing, it was more portable, wouldn't spoil and was more readily convertible. Not every community took the paper money (manufactured in Junktown) but most did and traded it at par or at least adjusted for local goods.

Corndog looked at her strangely.

"Fun? Who the hell jokes about gettin' paid? You some kind of Southern Socialist? or something?"

For much of it's history, the Confederation had very left-leaning politics and economics. they even elected a Socialist Party member for President (Huey "Kingfish" Long from 1936 to 1940, and 1960 until his assassination in Dallas in 1963). It had become one of a many cultural and economic friction points between the conservative North and liberal South.

"You folks need to be meeting me here at 0400 hours so that you can get a move on then."

As Corndog finishes speaking, a fit middle aged man comes up to the group.

He is wearing what might have been uniform before the bomb's fell but it has seen better days.  On his hip is what looks like a police issue holster with a side arm and handcuff's.

"Good Morning gentlemen and ladies.  I am Sgt. Ian Sullivan.  I heard that you are heading up to Bosie?

Ian extends his hand to Sgt. Crichton.

"I was a Mountie.  I now with the Law Dogs."

With a quick smile he says:

"Thanks for the warning."

He does a quick scan over the group and you can tell he is taking some mental notes on the group, he pays attention to anyone that looks like they are trying to avoid his sight when he brings up that he is working for the Law Dogs.

Smoker was dressed in a duster, kheffiyeh around his neck, beard, bandanna over his head, armed with an antique FM FAL rifle. He appeared to be with Roadkill.

Re: Near Wichita

Peter listened quietly. He didn't interrupt since the others were either goofing off or not present. He did listen intently, however. The Convoy wasn't as quiet about things as Templars were but they didn't usually broadcast either. The fact that they were being a bit open with this town meant it was alright.

So he relaxed a bit more. He smiled at Jane if she was around. And he ate his meal, savoring the flavors and real food instead of milrats and worse for the first time in a while. In the Wasted West, one had to take what small pleasures one could where one could find them. Death and disappointment stalked everyone most of the time.

He gave a nod to Corndog. "Good t'see ya again, Dog. Been a while. One day I'll give up this glamourous life of playin' scout for the Convoy and get myself a nice cushy job on one o'them big rigs in the middle of the train." He chuckled, since no job was cushy anywhere these days, let alone in the Conoy.

He looked at the new person being foisted off on them. "Sullivan, huh? Mounted Law Dog. What are your areas of expertise? Just another gun?"

Trejo starts packing everything on his Bike getting ready for the early start.  He rubs the wounds on his chest and while they still ache there seems to be no risk of them re-opening, even on a long ride.  Once all but his bed roll is packed Trejo tops up his tank and gas can with spook juice and prepares to get some shut eye in the back of the rig. As he goes about his tasks Trejo seems to be a bit more upbeat, occasionally going so far as to crack a smile whenever Smoker and Roadkill start going at it.

The Colonel listened and watched without offereing any comment. He wasn't worried about the Law Dog, as he had no reason to be. Not that that was true for all of the others by his guess. Hopefully the lawman wasn't going to start any trouble with any of Kurt's friends; if he did, he would find himself at the wrong end of one of the Colonel's rifles. Schaeffer didn't make friends easily, but once he counted a person amongst those few, he'd do nearly anything for them.

"Excuse me guys, I got things to do."

He nodded to each of them and then made his way down to the lake. He walked or rather strolled slowly, as he wanted to give Rowan some time.

Having arrived at the lake, he saw her preparing something. Kurt didn't want to interrupt or distract her, so he sat down nearby, stripped down his guns, cleaned them and checked them over.

Rowan finishes off preparation, and carefully cleans and puts her equipment away. Then watches with some pleasure the sight of Kurt cleaning equipment.
She heads across and kneels beside him.
Softly she says "before the war, around 1960 Mina Devlin perhaps the greatest of us was put on trial by the second witch trials."
"Her descendent taught my lady and she me, but the word was that the government still sought the true practitioners some of the covens just disappeared, hunted it was said by shadowy government agency some by Texas Rangers."
"I have no way of knowing how far the hunt went, who's names were on the lists."

She lays her head on his shoulder
"One day I would like to stop running love, I seem to have no one left but you and I do not want to see you hurt because of me"

The Colonel put his M4 back together and checked the carbine's action while he listened to Rowan. As soon as he was satisfied with the trigger's dry "click", he turned to her.

"Well, you certainly don't have to worry about being hunted. If you are, they need to go through me first and so far no one managed to do that.

Kurt smiled gently and put his left hand on one fo her hands.

"Don't worry about me sweetheart, I can take care of myself. Just take a good look at my face. What do you think the other tank looks like?"

He grinned to show he was joking.

"You know, I don't think abou the future too much. If nothing kills me, I'm going to fight until I'll be too old or too fucked up and then, most likely I will spend my time training others to fight. It's what I do, it's what I am...and I'm happy with it."

The Colonel sighed.

"Remember I told you that this whole mess was partially my fault? Well, it's true. All I had to do was pull the trigger and maybe we could have avoided the war. Instead, I took a prisoner and...well, we're here.

I wish I could turn back time and take that shot. And even more, I wish I could believe in a future where all the fighting will be unecessary. I do actually, but I don't think I'll see it."
