Re: Near Wichita

The Marshall:
They lifted the hood and started checking the motor and hoses. It looked like the crank case was cracked and slowly leaking oil. They could make it into town but probably go no further without either damaging the engine or constantly topping up the oil. It could be fixed but would need a shop.

The Ultra-Light came in and circled them once at medium altitude, then angled off towards the angry Ghost Storm on the horizon over the ruins of Wichita. No doubt taking a look.
Rowan hopes he does not get to close
There is an old saying' about curiosity killing the cat'

Rowan, while possessing no ESP or other arcane senses, was still sensitive to the area around her. This area seemed healthy and in balance with nature. The trees and grasses seemed less stunted or warped than most places in the Wasted West, there seemed to be... less pain.

Rowan relaxes wondering slightly what has bought this about so close to the hell storm.

Waits to see what Smoker does or suggests as he lights up annother smoke and jumps back on board to drive onwards.

Roadkill looks towards Rowan "hows the bike? Hope you aren't going to claim it for yourself now" He laughs

Re: Near Wichita

Rowan relayed her information. How they were being asked to donate blood for the medical clinic and relate their experiences in the ruins, in exchange for good food and free repairs, a deal on fuel. As well, her Witchy intuition telling her that this area was somehow more "in balance" than other areas of the Wasted West.

The team mounted up again, and slowly limped towards town. The vegetation did seem greener, grass and crops healthier than elsewhere. They passed another large herd of longhorn cattle, as large or larger than any had seen since the war.

There was another series of checkpoints and an inner perimeter without stopping. It would take a small army to blow their way into here. Notable was the peaceful presence of Muties. Normally Norms and Muties didn't mix in communities, the Muties being routinely discriminated against and shunned. The Muties of Near Wichita seemed to be ordinary citizens or members of the Volunteer Defense Force, no different than anyone else.

Central Boulevard was clean and repaired. There was a small, pre-war hospital on one side of the road, a park with the city hall building on the other. In front of City Hall were several flagpoles. There was a CSA flag, Kansas state flag, Canadian flag, British Flag, Imperial Russian flag.

Rowan looks at the flags
Wondering why so many in one place then looks at the medical centre, first things first she thinks, we need to get decontaminated.
She wonders if they would have work for a medic here.
She indicates the medical centre to the Semi and heads in that direction to get cleaned up, and if they still want it donate a pint of blood.

In reply to Rowan Dawson (msg #41):

Before they got to the hospital, they came across a bar, "Maxies". In front is what appeared to be an antique or replica WWII BMW motorcycle with sidecar, and a Hyundai pickup truck.

Parked in front of the hospital was an ambulance, looking like it's been newly painted with "NEAR WICHITA AMBULANCE COMPANY" on the side. A female paramedic in uniform was loading bags of equipment into the back. Honestly, she'd never expected to see something like this again outside of Junkyard, the last major surviving city in the Wasted West. It was a shock to realise that was her, before the war. Another came out of the Emergency entrance, pushing a wheeled stretcher.

Rowan, parks the bike then checks over her shoulder to see the Semi has pulled in behind her.
And gets off and streaches, then walks across to where the Paramedics are working.
"Good day" she says pleasently from a short distance away

Rowan shakes her head, "nothing living in there, and not much of the other type either". "Stay out of it or you will be joining me in decontamination along with the rest of the crew".
"Got one person we rescued I would appreciate good look over on,  I only ever got my first year in Frederick County Paramedic Station before the world went mad."
"And this lot keep me real busy", Rowan pats her bag, "out of so many things"

Rowan looks at the medical centre, "whats the story over the blood donations, we are hearing some really weird stories out there".
"But the area here feels okay to me"

"Glad to meet a fellow paramedic! I'm Stacy MacPherson. I was only a kid when the bombs fell, so Doctor Kuznetsova helped train me as part of the community medical service." She looked like she was in her late 20s, so this made sense.

The woman slipped her own bag over her shoulder and started walking over to Rowan, taking out a Geiger counter and checking her over. As expected, Rowan came up as "hot".

"Got some rads on you, I see. The ruins are a dangerous place! "Decontam" is around the side of the building. You better get going!"

She pointed to a sign with an arrow pointing to the side of the small hospital: "FOR DECONTAMINATION PROCEED THIS WAY"

"Most people are a little curious about the blood donation, but it's for medical use only. It's separated and then put into long-term storage. It's not like the old days when we could use synthetic blood and plasma. I admit it's something most people didn't even do before the war, as there was artificial blood available."

"I don't know what you heard about Near Wichita, lots of rumours going around. We had some kind of monster... mutant... whatever, called "the Ravager" living in this shopping mall off to the west. It was stealing cattle and the muties that also lived in the mall got blamed. It was looking to be a range war and the Muties would not have come out on top. The Sheriff and his posse came into town and took care of the Ravager, made peace between the Muties and the ranchers. Once people knew there was hope, things been a lot better since then, we can even run a clinic and a school. Anything else is just talk, probably related to the Ravager."

Stacy the paramedic knocked on Roadkill's door. "Anyone need medical attention in there?"

For that matter, the story had a familiar ring to it. On some level Rowan knew that how people felt, in particular the fear they felt about the horrors around them. Once the fear is diminished the land itself reacted or responded in some way, not just the people.

Re: Near Wichita

Using a pry-bar from the Ambulance, the warped rear doors were forced open by Roadkill and Smoker. The passengers (the Widow and her kids) were safe, if shaken up. Hey, no one said that travel in the Wasted West was easy! Or safe. Or in a direct line. They needed decontamination as well as Rowan, Roadkill and Smoker.

Using some dried meat, Rowan coaxed her coyote friend out from the saddlebag on her hoverbike.

The people needing decontamination were directed to the side of the building. There were 2 large banks of showers (one for women, one for men) inside a side door. There were instructions posted outside the door:

1) MEN GO TO LEFT SHOWERS, WOMEN GO TO RIGHT SHOWERS
2) DISROBE AND PLACE CLOTHING IN BINS FOR CLEANING
3) USE SOAP AND BRUSHES PROVIDED
4) MINIMUM SHOWER 10 MINUTES, MAXIMUM 20 MINUTES.
5) DRY USING TOWELS AND DRESS IN PROVIDED HOSPITAL GARMENTS
6) REPORT TO NURSING STATION FOR FINAL CHECKING

Waiting for them was a woman in her late 30's wearing a doctor's coat over normal-looking street clothing and a stethoscope with a Geiger counter slung on her shoulder. Her name tag read "DR. KUZNETSOVA".

"Please, come this way. I promise, you will feel better soon!" She spoke with a Russian accent.

The widow and her 2 boys (one 5 and the other 9) complied, all going in the women's shower so she could thoroughly clean them. The Doctor ran the Geiger counter over them as they passed, noting the readings on a pad.

The Colonel stepped out of Maxies. He had arrived a couple of hours ago, donated blood, had himself and his bike checked out and had just finished his meal and had been chatting up to the barmaid, when he heard the sound of a powerful truck engine, a sound that seemed very familiar.
A broad grim materialised on his scarred face when he saw that the people he'd been waiting for had arrived. Walking toward the truck and the hospital, he called out as soon as he was near enough:"Well, friends, you took your time to arrive."
He checked out the obvious damage to the truck and realised that some of the people he had expected to see were missing.
"I see you saw some action, ja? Where's the others? Was anybody killed or injured?

Inside the showers:

The water was hot, or at least warm. This was the height of postwar luxury! The soap was coarse and obviously home-made. The coyote joined her and allowed itself to be thoroughly washed-up. The Widow and her children joined them, taking adjacent stalls.

Outside the building, the others got ready to enter. As they did, a familiar-looking figure strode towards them around the corner of the hospital. It was the Colonel! Looking none the worse for wear.

Rowan takes out and keeps with her the amulet and small athame.
The rest of her stuff is with her back on the Semi

Rowan troughly enjoys getting herself and trickster clean and then makes sure her little friend is driends as well.

Once done she moves to the end dressing, "sorry Trickster" she says in the silence of their spell, "I do not think the clothing would suit you".

She slips her pendent back around her neck and places the small Anthame in a pocket.

Politely thanking the person at the end, "thats the first time I have felt so clean in I do not know how long".
She Indicates trickster, "she thanks you as well says it smells better here"

Then follows the instructions given

"Kurt! I knew I recognized that machine but bad timing, we got to get cleaned up after being that ghost storm, and of course" with a sly grin "Someone needs to keep the ladies company in the showers" shanking his head side to side he continues "ahh who am kidding, i've probably got a better chance with smoker. Give us an hour and we can all catch up over... i don't know, you got any good cigars on you?"

Roadkill waits a moment for a reply and then runs to the showers, stripping off as he goes almost tripping over as he hops along taking his shoes off. Should he suddenly feel this itchy all over he thinks.

Those who wanted to take a shower could. Their clothes were taken for washing.

Once done, dried off and dressed in hospital gowns, they gathered at the Nursing station.

The nurse (who had [CATHY] on her name tag) told them, "so you know, decontamination is free, it's a community service. Those who wish to give blood can do it now, we have a side room over there."

She indicated an area off to the side through an open entry (not a door that can be closed). "We urge you to do so but it's not compulsory. Those who do can use the garage in town and get a 10% discount on food at Maxie's and dry goods and Spurgeon's hardware."

Re: Near Wichita

The female doctor had followed them in, supervising the decontamination and again, checking them for radiation. Everyone seemed clean, even those who'd been contaminated.

"You're all clean now! Health seems good. Let me know if you have any illness or feel any pain. Our rates here are quite reasonable."

The doctor, despite having a Russian name, spoke with a midwestern American accent, no trace of Russian.

She added to the Nurse's request for blood donation, "if you do, there's milk and cookies! Real milk, too!"

Again, the relative luxury of fresh, uncontaminated milk was almost too good to be true, although the herds of cattle grazing as they passed coming in made it plausible indeed.

Dr. Kuznetsova talked with the widow McCabe, who asked her brother be notified she'd arrived. "Yes, I know Brian Worthington quite well, he was in to have a checkup. I delivered his baby 6 months ago. You have a niece! Congratulations."
