Re: In the Junkyard II

Before he got to three, a round green object rolled through the door from the barroom.

It was a hand grenade!

In reply to The Marshall (msg # 122):

"Scheisse!"

Schaeffer threw the flash-bang he was holding out the kitchen door into the barroom.

Knowing there wasn't any time to pick up and throw the hand grenade back where it came, he instead dropped down on top of it to absorb the explosion with his body to save Peter.

Re: In the Junkyard II

Peter let out a curse, "Shit!" and leaped forward in to the bar's main area to avoid being trapped in the kitchen should the grenade do too much damage. And also to try and get some cover from the grenade. He hoped the Colonel would be alright but most of his brain was focused on the flight part of the fight or flight reaction at the moment.

Re: In the Junkyard II

The grenade under Schaeffer went off as Peter vaulted past him, through the doors to the barroom. Without Schaeffer's action he could have otherwise been severely hurt!

In the bar, most of the bikers had taken shelter behind the solid bar, which was to the left of the door to the rear. Not coincidentally, that's where Schaeffer had lobbed his flash-bang. It went off, completely disabling the bikers hiding behind there. Even though the bikers with Smoker were partially protected from the effects by the bar they too were stunned by it As well, all the remaining light bulbs, candles and lamps were blown out, plunging the room into darkness.

When Jason rolled into the bar, he saw it was total chaos inside. There were bikers lying all around, moaning, among overturned chairs, tables, and behind the bar. Peter was near the rear of the room, also looking for targets. Jane covered him from the door, Rowan on the ground beside her. Bikers ran by them, hopping on their motorcycles, kicking them to life and getting the Hell on the road!

Police sirens grew louder. Three Junkyard MP Humvees plus transport Humvee with Trask's armour were approaching on the dirt road from the closest gate to Inner Junkyard in a cloud of dust.

Re: In the Junkyard II

From the rear of the leading Humvee Trask could see people milling around what he guessed was the bar where the ruckass was taking place. His HUD swarmed with green squares and he assigned each of them as a potential target.

Once they got closer he could see the bikers were just looking to leave so he let them go.

Re: In the Junkyard II

Inside the bar, Jason moved up to cover the bikers who were closest to Smoker. They were in no shape to resist, still affected by the stun grenade. Smoker found himself on the floor, with Jason standing over him. Peter couldn't hear anything, his ears were still ringing from both the explosion under Schaeffer as he moved past him and then the bang of the flash-bang grenade. It would take a few minutes for the ringing whine in his ears to subside. In the doorway, Jane covered Jason and Smoker, but couldn't see any targets.

Outside, Trask's Humvee continued to follow the MP Humvees. They seemed to be heading to the marketplace now. Down the street was a biker bar, one of several. Depending on the establishment, dozens of bikers were coming out to watch, beer bottles in hand. But others here and there were getting back on the road not wanting to deal with the law, such as it was in Junkyard.

"Flashbang. Your hit stay down get your gun and keep these idiots covered. The Colonel had to come in the back. Gonna check his sitrep and get back to you guys." Jason motions for Jane and Rowan to move forward. He starts toward the back caution starting to creep in. That feeling that something awful is about to happen or be found washes over him. Peter kept his gun leveled on the bikers even though they didn't seem to be ready to cause any trouble. He glanced back through the doorway he'd come in through in the back to see how the Colonel was holding up. He certainly hoped that the Colonel was okay.

Even though jane didn't see any targets, she kept her eyes out as she stood by Rowan.  She heard Jason say to move forward and looked at Rowan to see if she was ready to do that or not.  Things seemed to be settling down a bit but then the law wasn't that far away.

"We sticking around here?  Most of them of left.  How's Schaeffer?"

Re: In the Junkyard II

For that matter, Smoker's ears were ringing as well, making communicating difficult. Jason finally got across what he wanted. Smoker wasn't able to find his Colt Python but one of his former captors were armed with a Ruger Redhawk, of similar calibre. He picked that up and used it to cover the two men.

It wasn't easy for Peter to cover the remaining bikers in the bar. Most of them were either behind tables or the bar, out of direct line of sight. And they were starting to shake off the effects of the flash-bang grenade. They could grab their guns at any moment and kickm off another round. Glancing back, he could see that Schaeffer was a mess.

At that point, Jason saw Schaeffer and went to assist. His body was burned and blasted, his right leg appeared to have been severed and he was bleeding out from that wound, and another nasty one to his right arm. His chest seemed protected by his IBS breastplate unit. His skull (and face) were protected by his helmet and face-shield.

Smoker grunted. OK so this Ruger Redhawk would do but he hoped that his Colt Python would be recovered after all this is over and done with.

He glowered around at the bikers, hoping that they'd not try anything stupid.

Re: In the Junkyard II

In reply to Jason Sinclair (msg # 138):

After turning Schaeffer over, Jason thought that aside from the missing leg, Schaeffer didn't look too bad. Feeling for a pulse, Jason realised with a rising sense of dismay that he couldn't find one. Quickly unlocking his IBS breastplate to get at his chest he saw the little puckered wound near his heart, leaking a little blood when he pushed down to do CPR. He'd been hit with what soldiers called the "Golden BB". Somehow through a quirk of fate and physics a piece of shrapnel had pierced his IBS in a weak spot and punched through his heart: a killing blow.

Marshall's Notes: Schaeffer took a Maimed level wound to his right leg, severing it. But he also took a Critical Wound to the Gizzards and a Light Wound to the Upper Guts. These cumulatively result in a Maimed Wound to the torso, which is a fatal wound.

Peter has seen death many times, up close and personal. Too many times. He let out a small growl. Then he turned to the bikers in the room. Whether he was still partially deafened or not, his voice was very loud. "WHO THREW THE GRENADE?"

Re: In the Junkyard II

Jane covered the people as they worked.  She didn't exactly like what Jason was saying, or perhaps it was the tone, but she could understand why he said it.  If anybody could bring back Schaeffer it would be Rowan.  Jane knew first hand how good she and her Goddess were.  There was, of course, the possibility that they weren't in time.  No, she wouldn't think about that.  She wasn't sure ANY would live if that was the case because Jason and Rowan might retaliate before clear thinking heads could figure out a plan.  Peter was known for his temper so he would no doubt be in there with them but he always surprised her so the best thing she could do right now was to cover them and hope for the best.

Re: In the Junkyard II

In reply to Rowan Dawson (msg # 145):

None of the prisoners volunteered that they were the one to throw the grenade. Probably correctly guessing it wouldn't end well if they did. Or maybe that biker was no longer in the building.

While Rowan unpacked her medical bag and gloved up Jason tied off the stump of Schaeffer's right leg and used the first gift that a Templar receives, the Laying on of Hands. The leg was still severed but the blood flow stopped as it healed a little with the aid of the mystical energies. This slowed the major source of external bleeding, but he was still bleeding out internally.

Rowan set up an oxygenator over Schaeffer's mouth and nose. It was a self-contained compressor unit that did not require a full oxygen tank to function.

Due to the extent of his thoracic trauma Schaeffer's vitals were all flatlining. This was no time for half-measures, it was resuscitative thoracotomy time. Cutting away the remains of his battlesuit she used a scalpel to slice open the pale, scarred skin laterally between his forth and fifth ribs on the left side over his heart. Taking forceps she peeled back the skin, then retracted (pulled apart) his ribcage exposing his thoracic cavity. Within lay his heart and major blood vessels, gleaming and wet with blood. Working quickly she repaired a major laceration in his aorta from a chunk of shrapnel. As his heart had stopped completely even defibrillation wouldn't restart it. She was forced to begin massaging his heart directly.

He would also require a lot of blood even just to make it to hospital. Fortunately, they had a couple strokes of luck. Rowan's blood type was O-, she was a universal donor, and markings on Schaeffer's armour indicated he was O+, a universal receiver.

The MP Humvees, followed by the armour transporter with Trask, skidded to a stop in front of the bar. At their arrival there was a general exodus from the several bars lining that side of Marketplace. About a hundred bikers were hitting the road at the same time, hauling ass for city limits. Trasks's Humvee pulled to a stop just behind the MP Humvees. MPs armed with 5.565mm D22 rifles and 9mm sidearms were bailing out of the Humvees, heading towards the bar at a run.
