I find this module to have some interesting features that I am not used to.  All the npc's for 1.  Not so much running them as the fact that they basically DOUBLE the party size.  When you combine that with the size of the random encounters, few if any random encounters are going to be of any significant threat.  It's the long term, slogging through the jungle, making disease saves, making poison saves...that provides the danger.  And that's hard to translate into PBP.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Also, I am doing some rolls and such for the encounters, I should be able to post fri.

None, other than maybe just getting the party out away from camp some.  I assume we'd probably leave most if not all of the NPCs to watch the camp and then we'd be a more or less normally sized party once more.

Did we lose Miro?  It doesn't look as though he's logged in for like a week now.

It looks like Miro has not been on for a week in any of his games.  I suspect RL is consuming his time.  Hopefully he will return, eventually.

Having actual clerics also helps with regard to "Slogging".  We can keep up with such damage. Also, we have the heal skill (maxed out).  I am playing in a group where the only person with even a rank in it is a 8 wis rogue/fighter.  The heal skill does come in handy when facing poison and disease, really handy.

The theater took up huge amounts of my time, as work often does, and with how much it set me behind on other stuff, I'm just getting the chance to log in now.

I really like this game, and would love to continue it.


The mechanic of gaining experience for each NPC we commit to the party is one that I really like, and I enjoy the extensiveness of the maps.  My gaming group (which also had to be on hold for the past month) doesn't really tend to use published adventures, and I like the difference between the two styles.

I'm glad you're back, Miro.  We missed you.

I really enjoyed interacting with the various NPC - that's been one of the highlights of the adventure so far for me, though I know it's also a tremendous amount of work for the DM to have that many NPCs around all the time.  But I do think it adds quite a bit to the atmosphere of the game.

I'm not sure that I'm enjoying the current structure of the game as much - it seems to be tending more towards a sort of sandbox environment, and I've usually preferred a more directed structure.  The prospect of playing through a few dozen more random encounters as we wander through the jungle and explore shipwrecks is not exactly thrilling to me at the moment.  I do like combat in my RPGs, it's not that, and I really enjoyed the fight on the beach and the one at the wreck of our vessel, but I do kind of think combat in PbP games is best when it's used more sparingly than it typically is in face-to-face games.  Frequent combats take a lot of time on RPOL, where a fight can take days or weeks to resolve.

I don't know what everyone else's thoughts are on the matter, so it may just be me that's not quite as excited about the game as I used to be, but I have found my enthusiasm waning a bit in recent days.

Sure, welcome back Miro.  Basically, Miro and Ishirou went hunting and got taken off screen, swallowed up by the jungle.  I could run a side PM adventure for you to get you back to the group.

Ok, so here are some problems I/we are having and I would like some comments;

1) This adventure is a sandbox.  At the start, all you have are random encounters.  Even the "placed" encounters are rather random.  By random I mean, little relationship to each other or to a plot.

2) The start is all about a slow grind.  There is no big event, just the slow whittling away of resources through random monsters and random diseases.

3) Being a sandbox, there are no real roadsigns, "plot is This Way" around.  You are stuck in a jungle trying to survive.  It also means, nothing happens unless you choose to do it.

Just some preliminary ideas to discuss.  What do you think about this?  What can I do different?

I will try to respond with more thoughts Sat, but I'm out of time today and Fri will be busy (I have an extra meeting at work to go to).

I was trying to run the module "as is", but that obviously won't work for PBP.  I am thinking about how to tweak it to be a better fit.

One way to do it would be to increase the difficulties of each encounter.

Ok, after thinking about the module.  I will be trying to run it in a more direct/linear fashion, rather than as a sandbox.  I will incorporate "random" encounters into the placed encounters and offer choices, "Do you want to do A,B,C?" rather than say, "What do you want to do?".

December is going to be slow, but if you want to restart, I'm game.  Who's ready to continue?

This time of year is rough, families and holidays and work wanting to get things completed before the year's end, and juggling it all can be pretty demanding... so I'm sure everybody understands.  I'm game to restart asap.  It has been a bit tedious, but I am excited to see what the island holds.

I might be gone till 1/8.  I am going on vacation and don't know how much internet access I might have.  I will check in and try to get a restart of the game going after New Years if I can get good net access.  Until then, Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

I'm sorry, but I just don't seem to have any enthusiasm for Dming right now.  I've tried to get it back, but it is gone.  So I am putting this game on hold indefinitely.
