The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Dry Fork Town
Population: 1,351
Government: There is a mayor named Corey Cole (wife Lori Ann Cole) who rules the town fairly. There is also an elder in town that people turn to for more day-to-day problems. The elder's name is Walter Kine.
Defense: 6 guards at 8 posts throughout town.
Inns: Traveler's Inn (standard), Turquoise Dragon Inn (slightly expensive)
Taverns: Burning House Tavern, Old Olly's, and the two inns each have a bar.
Temples: Temple of the Road (Avandra); Harvest Temple (Pelor);
House of the Sun (Pelor); The Hammer House (Moradin)

Dry Fork Town is a nice place, nestled between a mountain and some grassy plains (just a few miles out is a forest). The people there are generally light-hearted and ready to help out strangers. Aside from the people of note listed above, Heinrich Pferdefedern and his daughter Hilde are centaurs who moved into town about 10 years ago. Of course, the sheriff Crook Shank is well known.

It's another Sunday morning, people are taking a break from business and heavy chores. Most take some time to worship at one of the local temples, but there are a few who aren't all that religious. Everything seems fine.

(OOC: All questions about Dry Fork Town, please direct at the OOC thread, PM, or as a short blurb at the bottom of your post like this OOC blurb I just typed.)

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Kennedy - Rogue
"Don't go thinking you're going to get some divine inspiration," he air quotes the last two words, "today; those gods of yours can't possibly hear every single one of you at once!" Kennedy was one of those few in Dry Fork that didn't believe in hokey religions and all powerful beings. There's nothing better than a sword in your hand and armor on your body. Because when it comes down to it, the only person who is going to save your ass, is yourself.
Kicking random bits of stone on the way through the center of town Kennedy makes his way to the Traveler's Inn. The bread was always a day stale, the ale was watered down, and the company was marginal at best. But the barmaids, ah yes, the barmaids, that's what made this inn worth the five silver he spent on a regular basis.
The light strum of a lyre being struck slipped it's way to the street and caught Kennedy's ear. Ah, the bard plays once again, perhaps he'll play something good for a change. Opening the inn's door the smell of stale air hits him in the face. Has no one left since I was here two days ago?
The main level is lit only by the sun shining through the smudged windows and the barely burning hearth that sits opposite the bar. Looking around Kennedy only sees the bard strumming and humming to some gawd awful song. No innkeep. No barmaids. Interesting.
Am I early? He asks himself. Breakfast was always ready by the time he got in on Sundays. He sniffs the air, not even the bacon is cooked. "Hey! You! What's you're name?! Bard fellow, where is everyone?"

The bard shrugs and says, "Probably at church. It is Sunday. And the name's Greg. If you're looking for someone, try the churches. Even some of the regular drunks and some barmaids I didn't figure the kind are at the churches today. I think they said something about it being a particularly special holy day or something. The bartender's in the back, though. He's getting ready to lock up, kick me out, and head out himself."

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Kennedy looks at the bard, "Greg? Really? Nothing creative? Like." he pauses, trying to come up with something creative, "Aerosmith?"
The Traveler's Inn was rarely closed. What day could it possibly be that's soooooo important to close up such a 'fine' establishment?
Palo, the bartender emerges from the back, "Alright, everyone out!"
Kennedy looks to Greg, then to Palo, then back to Greg, and mouths "Everyone?"
"You know Palo," Kennedy says with a smart-ass smirk, "this isn't good for business you know. I've been coming here for months now, and I've never been kicked out," in actuality it had only been a couple days since Kennedy had arrived in town, "on purpose."
"OUT!" Palo shouted, pointing towards the door.
A string on Greg's lyre snapped and Greg let out a yelp of pain.
"Take it easy Palo. Alright, alright. I'm going." Turning on his heal Kennedy strolled out of the inn. This was not how his Sunday was supposed to be working out. I hate Sundays.
The sun stung his eyes as he exited. Holding up an arm to block out the sun, Now what? Kennedy thought to himself.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

When Kennedy exited the tavern, he could see most of the commotion was happening at the churches, as expected. He also sees a traveler who looks like they're from out of town. A redhead halfling with bright emerald eyes is wearing some kind of thick leather or hide, a backpack full of equipment, a shield, a sword (unusual looking sword: a scimitar).

She spots Kennedy, notices Greg being kicked out with him, and notices the bartender locking up before heading out. She widens her eyes in surprise at the sight and trots over to the three. "Tavern closing? But it's early..."

Palo says, "Traveler, eh? Well it's World Day, so everyone is at the churches celebrating."

Emerald ohs and nods. "Guess I'll be joining in the festivities... that where you all are going?"

Greg says, "Nothing better to do. Besides... all the markets are at the churches today, so if I wanna replace my string..."

Emerald smiles. "My name's Emerald. Mind if I join you all?"

Greg says, "I'm Greg, this is Pelo. I don't mind."

Emerald looks at Kennedy. "And you are...?"

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Kennedy looks at the redheaded halfling girl curiously. "I'm surely not going to church. Those places are suckers. I find it hard to believe there's a group of all powerful beings who just sit by the wayside and watch us," he air quotes again, "'guiding our actions.'" He hesitates, debating whether or not to continue, "where were they when my brother, Oswald, died at the hands of some disgruntled bartender?" He glares at the nearest church, obviously struggling with the memories of his older brother.

He wipes his eyes with the back of his white shirt sleeve, and sniffs. "Sorry," he heaves a sigh and looks to the dirt road. "Feel free to join Greg and Palo, I'm sure they'll be more company than a disheartened brother." He looks into the halfling's bright emerald eyes. Something them tells him she's someone he can trust. "On second thought, I could use some company."

He reaches into a belt pouch and produces a small silver flask, the letter 'O' innately etched into the side of the flask. Kennedy takes a draw from the flask, his wavy blonde hair rustles as a slight breeze passes through the town. He hands the flask to Emerald, "It's not much, but you're welcome to share." He takes a seat at the waterless fountain that sits in the town's center. "I'm Kennedy by the way," he says with a slight smile.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Earlier, a Paladin with a helmet that hides his face wearing a green and brown cloak over his armor took a break from his morning walk and stopped at the fountain to admire the town he just arrived at.  He dropped to one knee and bowed his head to pray.  "Hail Pelor, light of life, for this radiant morning.  Hail Avandra, compass of the traveler, for guiding my steps safely to this place.  Hail Erathis, unifier of peoples, for this haven of civilization.  Hail pantheon, vanquishers of the Primordials and sealers of the Far Realm."

He stood back up, lifted his vizor, and took a deep, refreshing breath with a content smile on his face.  He strolled over to where the crowds were gathered, his path leading him to cross paths with Emerald, Kennedy, and the others.

"Blessings," he greets them with a welcoming smile.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Kennedy's shoulders slump as the paladin mutters his stupid prayer. Why can't they keep their offerings silent? The bar is closed, it's a "holy" day, and now this knight of the gods is giving thanks within Kennedy's earshot. "Can this day get any better?!" Kennedy asks to no one in particular. He rises from his spot on the fountain and turns to address the knight.

Fixing the collar on his white shirt, and pulling his purple leather vest down in the back, he steps around the halfling. "Just who do you think you are?" His face stern, his jaw set, hoping his words would defeat the paladin. Knowing full well his nimble blade, a relic rapier passed down through his family's history, would be no match for the paladin's holy avenger.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Emerald looks over at Palo and Greg. "Go on ahead, I'll stick with Kennedy." the other two shrug and head off towards the churches. Emerald turns to look up at Kennedy and gives him a concerned look, a hint of hurt in her eyes. "I know how you feel..." but doesn't give more detail than that.

Emerald and Kennedy arrive at the fountain right around the time Joey was done praying. (No perception roll, I'm just calling that neither Emmy or Kenny noticed Joey praying and only noticed him greeting them).

Emerald gladly accepts the offered sharing and sips from it. While sipping, she peeks up at Joey over the edge of the (to her) huge flask. When she's done sipping, she smiles at him. "Hi there. I'm Emerald. This is Kennedy."

Emerald notices Kennedy stepping between her and the paladin, realizing Kennedy could be instinctively being protective. But she waits to see how the paladin answers.

"Greetings, Kennedy and Emerald," the paladin answers with a sweeping bow, leaving himself wide open for whatever attack Kennedy may have planned.  He remains bowed as he introduces himself, "I am Joey.  If I somehow offended, I apologize.  It was not my intent."

He remains bowed, the armor and backpack weighing down heavily on him, but he tries not to let it show as he holds the pose, waiting to be told he may rise.

"You holy warriors are all the same," he says with a sneer. If it was one thing for the man to be praying, but now he was bowing with an apology, "I don't want your coutrecies." The heat of the day was getting to him, despite the breeze that had swept its way through the town. Sweat beaded from his brow. Perhaps it was that, and not the paladin's arrival that made Kennedy irritable. That, and the fact that the bar was closed -- nothing worse than that!

He looks to Emerald, "Perhaps Joey, is in need of a drink?" Slipping the flask from the girl's small hands, Kennedy steps around the fountain and hands the clergyman the silver container. "Here, take a swing," though it is not said in a friendly tone. "You look like you've had a long day so far."

It would take Kennedy some time to get used to wearers of the cloth, but now would be a good time to start. Especially since he'd allready paid for a couple weeks in advance for room and board. Kennedy enjoyed traveling, but money was getting low, and he had heard that Dry Fork might offer some opportunities.

"So," he says to both Joey and Emerald, "what brings you to town?" It was high time to play nice, Greg and Palo obviously weren't going to be much company during his stay.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Emerald answers, "Well I'm just traveling m'self. Wanna see the world. And at the same time, hoping to find a place I might want to call home. Never really had one..."

Emerald glances back to Joey and says, "Kennedy here is upset because the bar is closed and, well, he's not fond of the gods."

She then looks back at Kennedy and with a smile and a shrug, says, "But if every holy warrior were the same, then they would all be humble, apologetic sorts like Joey here, rather than the holier-than-thou bullies I've experienced first hand back in Red Wall, who kicked me to the ground for pointing out their own scriptures to them."

Besides... paladins can't all be alike or some of them would be disowned by their gods since not even the good gods agree on how to do things. But Emerald decided pointing that out would just seem like she's beating a dead horse.

Emerald climbs onto the fountain in order to be closer to the others' heights so she isn't craning her neck so much. "I'm lookin' to find some traveling companions too, if possible."

(OOC: Red Wall is a city, about 50 miles north by northwest of Dry Fork. There's about 3 towns and a city between here and there.)

"I have," Joey answers Kennedy, rising from his bow, "Thank you."

He takes a quick swig from the offered drink and returns it to Kennedy.

"You may not like the answer, but frankly, the truth is that I'm here on Avandra's orders.  Details are sketchy, but I know that I am to meet with some courageous souls willing to help deal with a dangerous threat in the near future."

He smiles at Emeralds' mention of looking for home while traveling.  "You and me both."

He puts on a serious face at Emerald's story of Red Wall.  "Thank you for the compliment.  If it helps any, I too have been mistreated by 'holy warriors.'  Others as well, of course, but that's beside the point.  Evil deeds come from even those who claim to worship gods of good."

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

"A mission from Avandra, ey?" He chuckles, "yet another poor man who believes in holy missions," he raises his hands to the sky, looking up, "from the all powerful beings who watch over us." Lowering his arms he gives a mocking smile. "You're right, I don;t like it. Rather, I  don't believe it."

Kennedy takes the flask and sips it before continuing, "We are all just ants in an ant hill: milling about, doing our thing, when something happens. Then we all struggle for survival. Some of us live, some of us die. And when we die, that's it.  We don't go to Heaven or Valhalla, we just die. The end. Lights out." He catches himself before continuing, realizing that what he said will not garner him friends, especially in a religious town like Dry Fork.

Biting his lip he waits for the others to respond. His mouth has gotten him into trouble before, now was not the time to cause problems. It had been several months since he'd truly had a decent conversation with 'real' people. Most of the time he talked with drunks and sleeping barmaids. Beside, who else would he talk to? Palo? Greg? No likely.

It was time to hold his tongue. He, like them, had come here for adventure. And whether it was by fate or by design, if Joey 'knew' there was a task to be completed -- and it paid handsomely -- Kennedy would lend his blade and skills to the call. "Sorry Joey, my words sometimes escape my mouth before I can think. Should your 'mission from Avandra'" air quoting, "hold true, then you have my blade." He extends his hand, hoping the paladin would accept his grasp and his pledge.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Emerald hops off the fountain and says, "Well then! Let's get going to the crowds and see if our "mission" starts with them. There could very well be people in need of help..." she begins heading towards the churches. "No matter what you may think of the gods, the fact is most people think a lot on the gods. So if you're going to make a mark, for better *or* for worse, you'll need to be among people who believe. Just like I live in a world of giants, so the bars and tables are super tall, many a thing in shops are out of reach. But it's the world I live in and I'm more than happy to share it with you fine, tall folk. Everyone has their troubles, but all too often people take for granted what others have to endure. And believe me... people who believe in the gods have hardships of their own, such as doubting their entire existence."

The streets are pretty much empty on the way to the crowds. So there isn't much to take note of on the way there. Once there, however, the trio will see all the people of town (and various visitors from out of town) are all communing either in light conversation, prayer, or even trade. The markets have moved to this area for the day, so it seems business is still going, despite all the worship going on. Granted, it seems more like an overgrown party / holiday than any kind of worship service. There isn't even any special speakers or such.

(OOC: Funny how people will just hang out with children and for the most part, forget how frustrating it is for everything to be out of reach or to have to ask for everything rather than just get it yourself. And that's just short vs tall. One guy, as an experiment, pretended to be blind to see how people treated him. He found even cashiers would try to short him his change and others would play mean pranks, while still others would pity him. He also tried being in a wheelchair for a day and found everyone condescended or looked at him differently. One person even patted him on the head. So yeah... it's a different world, when you are atheist, religious, gay, straight, black, white, cripple, fit, etc...)

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

The heat of the day is getting to Kennedy. He takes another sip from his flagon hoping to quench his thirst, but the heat and humidity have affected him this day more than any other in recent memory. He stumbles, catching himself on Joe, but then slips the other way almost crushing Emerald.
Narrowly missing the small girl, Kennedy crashes into a jeweler's stand. Collapsing the rickety stand and sending necklaces, earrings and other fine merchandise flying. People cry and yell in surprise at Kennedy's sudden entrance. A stalky man, with a peppered beard comes out from behind the broken stand, his hand firmly gripping his wife's wrist, with a look of rage on his face.
As the man opens his mouth to speak, Kennedy seems to come to. Although, from the looks of him, he doesn't quite seem to know what just happened. His eyes look glossy, and though you may have only known him for less than an hour, he somehow looks different. Straightening himself, Kennedy scrambles out of the wreckage when his hand comes upon an ornate, yet old necklace.
He looks at it queerly, turning it over in his hand. A strange (from what you know) look comes to his face. And he stands up quickly, as if overcome with a new found strength. Kennedy searches for a high place to stand amongst the churches and market. Climbing up onto some large crates of a nearby merchant, it appears as though Kennedy is going to address the masses.
"Citizens of Dry Fork, hear me now!  The Lord Bahamut blessed me with his might and called me to come speak with you today!" A city guard comes up and watches him, he doesn't say anything, occasionally watching the people as a few stop to listen. "Evil is lurking in all corners of this world and has seeped into our very souls.  Yes even I have been tainted by this darkness that now lurks amongst us; underneath us as well.  But take heart.  This new champion of light has made it his mission to come amongst the downtrodden, and the weak of soul, to raise you up, as followers of the Righteous God, Bahamut!  Join me now and take a step into the light of his grace."  He pauses, looking for some sign that people are listening. "But I digress.  How can I expect you to follow me, if you yet not understand how I came into his grace?"  A few more curious people stop to listen. "I was once a lonely soul.  Lost, confused, and searching for a purpose.  I found my way onto a ship, looking for adventure -- what young lad or gal wouldn't?  I sailed the high seas, fought amongst the lost and destitute, hoping to find some sense of self.  But alas, on the waters I found nothing but death and chaos.  And so I came to Dry Fork. I knew I had made mistakes while aboard those dark ships, and I soon found hope.  Hope in the form of this necklace! He holds the necklace aloft.  "This was my salvation and has changed my life forever.  Today I come before you a new man.  A man who's mission is to bring Dry Fork into the grace of Bahamut." He looks around again, hoping to see some hope within the eyes of those listening. He spies a few people, including the guard, who seem to have taken his words to heart. "Feel the light of Bahamut shine down on you today.  And if you truly believe that this Almighty God has touched you today, kneel before his disciple and pledge your eternal oath of servitude to him.  For he will guide you the rest of your days, and bless you and your family -- he IS the Light!  He IS the Truth!  He is your holy father and will protect you for the rest of your days!" Though no one really kneels, some do move closer, and all are still seeming to be listening. "Look in your hearts, feel his presence there.  The soft thump, thump, thump." He mimics this by putting his hand on his chest and motions the heart beating, "of your heart beats because of him.  He is the creator.  He gave YOU life." Kennedy points a finger out into the crowd, moving his hand across the many faces within, "He gave you the very air you breath!  Feel your lungs fill up with his glory and might.  Breathe deep the majestic power that is Bahamut. Never has my life been so clear, my path leads to the glory of Bahamut.  My every step, my every move, my EVERYTHING is for him!"  He leaps down from the boxes to land amongst the crowd, "He is with me always!  And he can be with you too!" Touching a nearby listener on the shoulder he begins to wrap up, "He can be with you too, brother." He turns to look at those who have gathered, "Brothers, sisters, hear my words.  They are the words of Bahamut." The man he just touched looks skeptical but shrugs. "Search yourself, and you will find the missing piece that is Bahamut.  In him you will find peace.  Peace in a word of Chaos!  Do not let the death-filled cries of age long wars fill you with doubt.  Bahamut will lead you out of the darkness and into the light.  A light filled with hope.  He is the ONLY protection you will find in this ill world.  Call his name and he will bless you with his grace."
And then Kennedy collapses onto the ground. His eyes have rolled back into this head, and appears unresponsive.

OOC: This was Kennedy's oratory from Byron's game. I thought it was the perfect time to throw it in there, despite this version of Kennedy having a negative view of the Gods. But really this is just a drunken stupor that brings on Kennedy's apparent split personality.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Joey of course accepted Kennedy's handshake.

To Emerald he smiles and nods.  "Do let me know how I can ease what hardships you may have."

When Kennedy crashes into the jewelry stand Joey says to the angry pepper bearded man, "Please forgive my fatigued friend," and offers to pay for damages.

Kennedy's speech comes as a complete shock but Joey is at least able to figure out that it wasn't intended to mock him.  Probably.  He grates against the gross misrepresentation of the Platinum Dragon but holds his tongue, keeping true to his personal convictions that a person has the right to be free to believe what they choose to believe.

When Kennedy passes out, Joey immediately takes off his gauntlets to better administer first aid, and exhales in relief.

"He's just passed out," he explains to Emerald and the onlookers, "He's going to be alright, but I believe he must be suffering from heat exhaustion.  Some rest in a cool place will do him good.  As for what he implied of the Platinum Dragon, I must object.  As I'm sure you know, no scripture suggests that the dragon god is the only god of creation.  It was the entire pantheon that shaped this world and it's people.

"May you have a blessed World Day, everyone.  Emerald and I shall see to this man's care."

After stowing the gauntlets, Joey carefully lifts Kennedy off the ground to take him to the nearest church.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Emerald looks concerned when Kennedy falls, so she hurries over to check on him. Seeing him stand up and act like he's fine (sort of), she pauses. When Kennedy goes and gives a speech, Emerald is confused. She looks further confused when people listen to him, but it IS the right day for anyone to just walk up and talk about their god of choice.

When Kennedy collapses again, Emerald walks calmly to him. Seeing Joey administer first aid and Joey's assessment, Emerald ohs and says, "Let's get him some shade and water."

Emerald walks with Joey and once Kennedy is in some shade, she helps situate him. "I wonder if a demon possessed him... a god-hater is certainly a candidate and as you pointed out, there were some very subtle lies mixed in. I've never heard of heat exhaustion, drunkenness, even a combination of the two causing someone to do a 180 on their beliefs. Unless... maybe he was a devout believer of the Platinum Dragon and his stupor relieved him briefly of what memories he has that causes him to hate the gods?"

(Emerald religion roll on Bahamut: 17 + 3 = 20. Her religion isn't trained (yet), but she rolled high, and has a nice int score. So she juuust got the DC 20. There's a DC 25, though. Maybe some day later she'll get that. ;) For now, though, knowing up to the DC 20 is actually a LOT. So I'll say she studied a little on Bahamut from time to time, but never got extra serious about it until she trains in religion, when she multiclasses into a divine class)

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Some say the shade cools the soul, in this case it helps revive Kennedy -- with the aid of Joey of course. It takes several minutes of aid to finally bring Kennedy to a conscious, yet hazy, state. His clothes are soaked in sweat and his wavy blonde hair is plastered to his head.
Trying to clear the cobwebs out of his head, Kennedy tries to recall what happened. "Wha .. what," he gulps, "happened?" he asks Joey and Emerald. His mouth is dry and each word is harsh on his throat.
After they explain what they experienced Kennedy is shocked. "I," he hesitates, he's tried so hard to leave his past behind, but it seems to keep following him, "I said that?"
After a couple gulps of water or wine he tries to explain. "I was once a follower of Bahamut. My views on the Dragon God were skewed; too extreme for some. When my brother died I cursed Bahamut and set out to sail the seas, in hopes of finding," he shakes his head not knowing really what he was looking for, "something, anything, nothing. Perhaps death." Kennedy continues, "that was three years ago when he died and I left. Then I returned home to find that my family had left, but no one knew where to. So I set out to find them. Which is why I'm here today."
Hopefully with the aid of Emerald and Joey, Kennedy gets to his feet. He wipes a single tear from his eye. The memory of his brother's death still stung. "Where to?"

To Emerald's speculation Joey shrugged.

"I'm sorry for your loss.  Where to next should probably be someplace to pick up a healthy bite to eat and a refreshing cool drink.  Are you feeling well enough to walk on your own?  I don't want you passing out again.  We could always let you rest here and bring you something."

The waitress is relatively plain, but has a pleasant smile and seems generally upbeat and helpful.

Concerning Kennedy, Emerald doesn't press the issue. The man is probably already beating up on himself as it is. However, Kennedy's lack of conversation doesn't stop Emerald from conversing with Joey. "So, Joey, what got you to your path? How was it you came to follow Avandra specifically as opposed to one of the other gods? And what do you believe in? What's your creed?"

Some gruff man comes in with a little boy. The man is practically dragging the boy by his wrist and orders some water for himself and the boy.

"Glad you're doing better, Mr. Kennedy," Joey says, unsure if it's true.

He exhales as if Emerald asked him a difficult question.

"My story?  Simply put, I was a lost soul who was shown undeserved compassion by my mentor.  He was a cleric of the Church of Pelor and taught me that my life didn't have to be so dark.  Unfortunately, my uhm...  background...  caused...  complications.  I was forced to take on a new identity and disappear.  Not that there's a bounty on my head or anything.  No one considers me worth any gold, fortunately.  But since then I found that the Church of Avandra is very understanding and they helped me out a great deal in my new life.

"What do I believe in?  My creed is simply to show others the compassion and understanding I was shown.  To reflect the light that was shined upon my own life.  To be the shield that was raised in my defense."

His voice cracks a little as his eyes mist up and he smiles warmly.  "How about yourself?  What's your story?  Your creed?"

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Kennedy nods to Joey in thanks. He treds softly, following his companions to wherever they may lead.

Hearing Joey's story though brings about questions. What sort of background did Joey come from that was so 'complicated', that it caused him to require a change in identity? It was a question that deserved an answer, but hopefully, in due time, Joey would open up and explain his past. As Kennedy knew one day he would need to come clean about his own.

It was the question that Joey ended with, that lead Kennedy to keep his ears open and his mouth closed, for once. What was Emerald's story? The tiny creature had intrigued Kennedy, perhaps her story would bring some hope to the two men that accompanied her.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Emerald says, "When I was at my lowest, I was taken in. Adopted by a loving couple and their son. They taught me what love is. I don't know what part the gods played in that, if any. But I know that some of them symbolize what I really believe in. And for that, I pay respect. For if those gods are simply just a symbol of what I believe in, I would be a hypocrite to curse them. I believe in love: The power to change people. The same power that moves the world. Good or evil, all people need love and most experience it at some point. So it is my goal to lift up the hearts of those around me. Since singing is a talent of mine, I choose to use song to lift people up. But I also choose companionship, for those who will have it, to not only lift them up, but also to hopefully bring love into lives, whether they already have it or not. Let me sing you a song..."

She clears her throat and begins to sing:

"I used to be, a Pharisee,
Cynical and wise, telling rich ungodly lies,
Of humanity...
But in the market place was seated,
a cripple with a lyre, I looked at him and said,
"I've been rich but so unhappy,
What set's your soul on fire?"

He said "Look upon me sister, I am a man with piece of mind,
I know I never was much good at nothing
But the words I wrought and rhyme,
But I've a good woman to feed me, and friends to share it too,
Evenings we sit around and sing together,
It can be the same for you"...

Just hold on, To young friends you made of old,
And cleave too, the one who keeps us whole,
Keep a warm fire for all your friends,
who come in from the cold,
Love them all as brothers,
you don't have to know their names,
For you it might be different,
but for us it always stays the same..."

She pauses the song to assess the reactions of Joey and Kennedy.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Kennedy sniffs and quickly wipes his eyes. Emerald's song and stuck a cord deep within, but one of the things Kennedy had learned in his short life, was to show compassion, but not too much, where you become vulnerable. He gives a fake cough, clears his throat gruffly, and says, "Must have been something in the air."

Scanning the room he looks for the tavern's entertainment. Spying a young girl dressed in silks of oranges and reds he beacons her over. Her long, wavy black hair caresses her cheek and shoulder as she slowly crosses the room. She may have been but ten and six, but her sparkling green eyes and the way she held herself, made Kennedy believe she had years hidden beneath her young features.

She smiled at him and traced a long line on Kennedy from shoulder to shoulder, lingering to twirl his golden hair in her sweet fingers. "Hello," she said softly. The room had melted away. To Kennedy, there was nothing more in the world than this girl and him. "I'm Laniya," her words were like honeyed ale. He wanted to drink in everything she said.

She positioned herself between him and the table, putting her back to both Joey and Emerald. He hadn't said a word since her arrival. She was intoxicating. Her smile. Her eyes. Her body. Her words -- what few she'd spoken. Had all called to him. He was lost within her presence. He didn't even notice when she slipped his coin purse from his hip.

EDIT: Laniya's Theivery roll to get purse: 1d20+14 = 32
Kennedy's Perception roll to notice: 1d20+8 = 24</

OOC: I thought it was time for a little bit of action. Wasn't sure when our "narrator" was going to guide us on our quest.
After creating Laniya, I realized her Theivery skill was at a +14! Not a 10 like I thought.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Emerald gives a helpless look as the sudden distraction of a seductress comes along. "Boy, she's laying it on thick. Wish I had the courage to be that forward..." When the lady faces her back to Emerald and Joey, however, Emerald seems to be very annoyed. One might even say furious. But it only lasts about a second before she takes a deep breath and smiles again. With a voice sweeter than honey, somewhat musical, and in a rather friendly tone, Emerald says, "Umm... excuse me, honey. We're friends of his and were in the middle of a conversation. Mind sitting on a chair so we can resume talking?"

Emerald saw right through the lady. She has also stolen both Kennedy's coin purse AND Layana's coin purse (if she had one) while the lady was distracted with Emerald's sweet tone and disposition. Emerald is giving an adorable smile up at Layana, using her cute to push Layana's woman buttons (the same buttons pushed when a gal sees a baby or a puppy).

Emerald's Insight: d20+7 = 26
Emerald's Thievery: d20+9 = 29
Emerald's Bluff: d20+11 = 30

...what can I say? I rolled high. O.o So Emerald rolled outlandishly high to see through Layana's intent. And for reasons I won't reveal yet, Emerald has very good reason to see that anyway, so the roll matched her perfectly. The thievery check, of course, to pick-pocket. And the bluff check was so Layana has no idea Emerald is annoyed with her. Emerald is faking being pleasant and kind.

Since Kennedy was distracted with Layana, AND Layana literally blocked any view of Emerald, I'mma say Kennedy didn't notice Emmy being annoyed. But I'll go ahead and say DC 15 perception for Joey to have noticed Emmy's quick change from nice to angry to SUPER nice.

Joey purses his lips and the corners of his eyes wrinkle a bit like he can't decide if he wants to frown or laugh.  He simply clears his throat, nods to what Emerald said, and waits patiently to see what will come of this latest development, but instinctively pats his belt to make sure his decoy coin bag is still there.  He's learned long ago to keep the majority of his gold hidden in a less accessible place.

Since Laniya is Kennedy's NPC, Tim and I will likely be taking on the role of players and let Kennedy GM this scene.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

This boy is mine. She thought to herself. Having first noticed him, long before he had seen her, she knew he would be her next target. Laniya had worked this inn hundreds of times over the past few years. Always giving the innkeep a portion of what she took in payment for his "hospitality".

She slipped the stolen purse into her hip pouch as she gave Kennedy a lustful look. The banter from his two companions was going unnoticed. Which was a mistake she had made over and over in the past, as the purse slipped right into Emerald's waiting paw.

Laniya gracefully slid her hand over Kennedy's cheek, teasing his hair and lips with her light touch. She could see his eyes gloss over and at that moment she knew she could continue with this con. She giggled as Kennedy returned her touch, and nibbled on his ear, whispering sensual secrets in his ear.

As usual, Laniya found herself being whisked away from the table. She let a soft chuckle escape her lips. Catching the innkeep's gaze she gave the man a slight nod. That was his clue for what was going to be transpiring over the next few hours. The innkeep gave no sign of recognition, instead only heading upstairs on the heels of Laniya and Kennedy to allow them access to one of the few vacant rooms.

Emerald watches Laniya in a bit of bewilderment. Without looking at Joey, her eyes still locked on Laniya as she leaves, Emerald says, "...did you see that, Joey? She just acted like I wasn't here and like I didn't say anything. And Kennedy acted the same. They didn't even bother saying "mind your own business" or something equally stupid. She must have cast a spell on him. I don't like it..." that last part said darkly. "He might not be alive next time we see him if she's casting spells on him. Let's hope she's just a serious flirt and nothing more."

She decides it best to not mention anything about the thievery yet.

Emerald's Perception: d20+1 = 9. Low perception score for the time being. ;)

Heh. Emerald doesn't have perception trained. Yet. And I even went beyond how many skills I would normally start with since I multiclassed. Since you already know Emerald's a bard, I'll give a small peak under the hood. Here's the skills Emmy actually trained in:

Arcana (comes automatically with bard), Acrobatics, Bluff, Insight, Streetwise, Thievery (from Multiclass Rogue)

As you've probably guessed both from the fact I'm trained in the above and the fact Emmy palmed the coin purses, Emerald has a thief-like background. ;) Looking forward to exchanging more about each others' characters as we RP together! ^.^

"'With persuasive words she led him astray;'" Joey quotes to Emerald,
"she seduced him with her smooth talk.
All at once he followed her
like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer stepping into a noose
little knowing it will cost him his life."

He follows along with Emerald, keeping up with the innkeeper.  "Since this young lady is apparently deaf to the voice of the friends of her mind-controlled thrall," he says to the innkeeper in a stern voice, "I will appeal to your sense of responsibility.  Ordinarily I am a laid-back and permissive sort of paladin, but I can be quite uncompromising when it comes to the well-being of my friends.  More importantly, Emerald here is a bard - notorious for being able to persuade even the most reluctant magistrate to act on her behalf.  To put it gently, it would be very unwise for someone to be involved in anything that takes advantage of our friend."

He watches the two very carefully with the eyes of an old west gunslinger, ready to defend against whatever attack they may attempt.

"Mind your own business," Kennedy hears the innkeeper reply to someone. It didn't matter who it was. All Kennedy wanted was to be with this enchanting woman.

She'd whispered some words in his ear and from that moment on he was hers. He flashed the young woman a smile and pulled her closer to him. He wanted to be one with her. Not two separate people sharing the same space, rather he wanted to be inside her. To know her in every sense. This was a feeling he'd never felt before, and he was enamored with it.

In a rush of emotion, he drew her close and kissed her. She must have been expecting it as she immediately returned the kiss. Something was off about it though. But he didn't care. He pulled her into a vacant room and quickly slammed the door shut. But a coldness had slipped under his skin.

He was scarred. He touched his side, it was wet. Tears filled his eyes. "Why?" he asked before passing out.

"Never kiss me again!" she spat. She loved to play the game, but the end result was always the same. They kissed her. "Say a few words to a man, and he thinks he can do whatever he wants!" She said outraged. Her words were soft, but they were cold and piercing.

She slid the dagger out from between Kennedy's ribs. It wasn't a killing blow by any means, but she knew where to stick the pointy end when it counted. She wiped the blade on Kennedy's tunic before kissing him on the forehead. "You had potential."

Laniya considered the scene. First she locked the door, and then she tossed the bed covers back and ruffled the small pillow. Looking around she knew this wasn't enough. Her gaze came across a mirror. Beauty is only skin deep. Raking her nails deep into her skin she drew blood and then slapped her face, hard.

She screamed. "Stooooooooooooop!" And ran to the door. Her fists slammed down onto the thick wooden barrier. "No! Noooooooooooooo!" She ran to the small window in the room, threw open the hatched and screamed again. "Help me!" Yanking her head back in she drew her dagger and stood across from Kennedy again. She fell back onto the floor, being careful to not knock her head on the bed. Laniya closed her eyes and waited.

Emerald pretty much ignored the innkeeper and was heading for the door where the two went, then she hears the blatant screams and such. With a burst of speed, she rushes to the door to find it locked. She unsheathes her Scimitar, pointing it towards the door, then looks back towards the innkeeper. "Keys! Now!" She keeps her shield-hand free of a shield for now so she'll be able to use the keys if the innkeeper gives them to her.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Joey doesn't give the innkeep a chance to answer and body-checks the man into the wall with a savage snarl.  He grabs the key and tosses it to Emerald then raises his fist to finish off the innkeep, but plate armor on top of his own considerable weight had already knocked the man out cold.  The paladin then draws his sword, crouched like a football lineman ready to charge.

"Avandra have mercy," he prays, his blazing eyes looking anything but merciful, "Open the door, please, Emerald."

OOC: That was a lot to happen in Laniya's post.  Were this a table-top, I'd have called for initiative rolls the moment the innkeep opened his mouth.  Let's assume Kennedy and NPCs all crit their initiatives and Emerald and Joey crit failed theirs.  Innkeep goes first, approaches the door (move action), uses a standard to unlock the door, then a minor to open it.  Kenedy walks through, uses a minor set Laniya on her feet, another minor to close the door, then spends an action point to  kiss the girl.  Laniya then sneak attacks Kennedy, spends an action point to lock the door, minor to clean her blade, move to bed, a third standard to toss it, a fourth and possibly a fifth standard to mess herself up, a second move to return to the door, another minor to pound on the door, a third move action to the window, etc., etc.  Only certain gods with multiple turns per round could pull all that off before Emerald and Joey would be able to bust in the room and catch her in the act.  I'm not sure I want to say "sure, whatever" and roll with it given that:
quote:
OoC: This is not intended to drive the story forward. Only to give an NPC to use for later on.
If it were, that'd be the GM's prerogative and I'd just have to bite my tongue and somehow overlook how my character somehow just stood there in a daze while his friend was in trouble.  Actually no I'd likely give the GM a hard time about it. :p

Better not to wait around. Damnit. I should know better.
Laniya rises, and looks to the small window she had opened only seconds ago.

"What happened, Kennedy?" he asks, standing protectively over the man, ready for anything.  At this point he wouldn't be surprised if Laniya sprouted devil wings and started attacking while cursing in Abyssal.

As the door opens, Laniya scrambled to her feet and made for the open window. The man's two companions quickly entered the room, giving her little notice. The welbeing of the man was more important than apprehending his attacker -- or so it seemed. It wasn't supposed to happen likle this. As a matter of fact, it had never happened like this. Sure she had slapped some men here and there. But stabbing someone was new. Where did that come from, she wondered.

"I'm sorry," shen whispered. Knowing full well that her heartfelt apology would mean nothing. With a final glance at the injured man, she eased herself through the window. Where she was headed she didn't know, only time would tell.

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

A voice beckoned him.
Kennedy.
He wanted to look, but felt tired. "Who's their?" he muttered.
Kennedy. the voice came again.
He did not recognize the voice, the voice a of a female.
Arise. My servant has asked for aid and I have granted you health.
Kennedy did not move. "Who are you," he asked.
I am Avandra, the patron of travelers. She replied softly.
"How can I be so sure? The last voice that helped me out resulted in," he was very skeptical. You can't go trusting a voice alone. The consequence were to grave to recall. "I'd rather die at the hands of a beautiful woman, than to be tricked again."
I am well aware of your past Kennedy. But if you are in need of proof, an image appeared before him, a maiden of unbound beauty. The linen that adorned her body flowed like water over a sandy shore and her hair rustled softly in a breathless wind. Around her neck was a silver chain, and from that chain hung a symbol, a symbol of three waves. She smiled at Kennedy. Her eyes sparkled like the dawning sun. Arise, and go forth. I have blessed you this day. But you will not see me again.
"But," he tried to protest. It was too late. She was gone.
His surroundings slowly brightened, as an image, not just an hallucination, but real life image came into view. It was Joey.
____________________________________________________________________________________
I had originally intended for this to be a conversation between Kennedy and Bahamut, but thought better of it after reading some background stats on the god. What I found intriguing was that those who answer the call of Bahamut must complete a right of rebirth They go off an meditate for a day and then go sit in some sort of egg. On the following day they arise from the egg a dragonborn, and a devout follower of the dragon god. Plus there was some info about how pissed he gets when someone goes against his teachings.
So I thought better of it and decided to have Avandra talk to him instead. But if you'll note she says she'll only help him once. What I would like for that to mean, is that Kennedy's past is SO tainted that he really angered some of the good gods. And now none of them really want to lend him any sort of aid. Should one of their followers ask for help, then they will grant it, but only once. Which means that any further healing prayers from Joey will have no affect on Kennedy. Kennedy would have to drink a potion or heal naturally from any future wounds.
This is intended to take Kennedy on a spiritual journey, and to somehow have the gods forgive him. Whether their mercy will end in his death or his rebirth remains to be determined, but the plot hook is nice. Plus it makes for good storytelling.
I was also thinking that Laniya might actually become a PC. I've actually grown fond of the character and I believe that there's more of her story to tell. But not now.

I think the lesson here is if you see someone you're attracted to flirting that much with you, you'll know it's entirely too good to be true. Though... as entranced as you were, I coulda sworn she was using magic on you. Was she?"

She looks to Joey, "Granted, she ignored us like we were invisible just as much as Kennedy did..."

Emerald then ohs and says, "With you almost getting killed, I almost forgot!" she pulls out Kennedy's coin purse and offers it up to him. "She took your purse. Thankfully, I took it back."

"Joey," he says weakly, "let her go. She was scared. Angry. Lost. Lonely. Afraid. I saw it in her eyes." He coughs a weak cough, his mouth is dry. Near death experiences will do that to you. "I'm sure we'll run into her again. And if you are still angry at her, then you can prosecute her to the fullest of the law. But I think we, I, owe it to her to hear her out." His words are soft. Despite his condition he has a place for her in his heart -- oddly enough. There was something in that kiss that told Kennedy that Laniya was more in awe of the moment than furious that it happened. "Please, let her go." He sits in silence to let Joey, or Emerald, respond. "But if you insist on talking to the innkeeper, could you ask if to bring me some water?" He chuckles.

Emerald quietly wonders if that's why she herself wasn't as angry with Laniya as Joey is. For the briefest of moments, Emerald actually thought herself less of a hero for not being that angry. But she had concern for Kennedy and helped bring him back, which assured her she at least had her priorities straight. Besides... compassion isn't something to whip yourself over.

Emerald grabs her canteen and puts it to Kennedy's mouth. "Drink up, Kennedy. And don't you worry... I saw how Joey threw that javelin.. it was butt-end first. Even as angry as he is, he's not gonna kill her on sight. We all want answers." She then speaks a little softly (and almost timidly) but still clear enough for Joey to hear, "And I know exactly how she feels. In a word; powerless. I've been there. Sadly, she isn't yet at the point where she realizes the freedom of trust."

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Joey reaches to put his surprisingly gentle armored hand on the one that grabbed his wrist.  He turns his hard gaze on Kennedy, purses his lips in thought, then nods.

"Thank you for pointing that out, Emerald.  A more experienced knight is unlikely to have been so merciful.  I suspect the girl is haunted or possessed.  I fear that if we don't catch up to her, she's liable to meet her end by the sword of someone less understanding."

If Kennedy releases Joey, he gets to tieing up the innkeeper.  "Don't have time to question this guy so let's leave that to the authorities.  Every passing moment puts our fugitive at greater risk.  So I ask again.   Who's going with me?"

Re: The Road: Chapter 01 - Peace

Emerald begins heading out. "Then let's go."

The Innkeeper is easily tied up and the authorities actually arrived soon after, having heard word of the loud man offering a 20 gold bounty. Hearing that Joey is a paladin and en route to try capturing a murderer, they tell him to go on ahead while they handle the innkeeper.

Laniya is a slippery one and was sure to mix her footprints in with others. However, in her haste, she was a little sloppy. Turned karts, a torn piece of cloth, and other clues on which direction help along with witnesses. Among the witnesses are even a few who tried to stop her for varying reasons. Some because they wanted to know why she was running and hoped to help her, others because of the 20 gold bounty.

All the same, she made one major mistake: Leaving town without doing so on horseback. She'll be caught up to, it's just a matter of time.

She is seen a long ways off, disappearing into the nearby woods (Remember the woods that are a few miles off?). The heroes arrive and find her trail again easily enough and continue on through the woods, which then gets thicker and... creepier.

Some straw dolls hang in random areas. "....oh dear" Emerald comments, "a witch. But are we chasing a witch? Or did we just accidentally chase a confused woman into the clutches of one?"

(OOC: Laniya worked out as a springboard to get things started after all. ;) I'll get us there. And don't worry, I'm not forcing anything... Laniya isn't the witch, obviously, since I can't decide what Laniya is. Although there IS one in the forest. XD Anyways, if anyone has any problems with the fast-forward, lemme know and I'll adjust accordingly, but the forest is the general direction I want us to go. :) Just figured Laniya was perfect for getting us there quick!)

He draws his sword and takes the lead cautiously.

Emerald lets Joey take the lead since he's the tank. But soon enough, the group finds a witch's hut! Or what looks a lot like one. Emerald says, "Be careful, guys... witches know some weird magic."

A pit trap opens under the three heroes! But all three manage to deftly side-step the crude, obvious trap!

4e, so no reflex SAVE. Instead, I roll against your Reflex defense. And yeah.. I rolled a 2. That's not gonna hit any of us.

Meanwhile, speaking of "weird", Salow, you remember me mentioning how I said to Byron "You haven't seen how weird Chris and I really are" and he responded with "I think I have a pretty good idea" like he knew better than Chris and I on how well he'd know us? Well today, I got to weird him out like you wouldn't believe. I said "I tried to warn you that you don't know how weird Chris and I are." to which he admitted, "I *thought* I knew..."

What weirdness did we unveil? Remember the Brain Bug from Starship Troopers? Remember Sailor Moon? I described a Sailor Brainbug to him that I designed years ago...

Joey sighs lightly and head-shakes at Kennedy's sarcasm.  Not one to leave things to chance, he clarifies what he meant.  "In other words, favor using the flat of your blade over the edge and aiming for limbs rather than vital points."

The pit trap would be one of the reasons why Joey was acting so paranoid with his cautious approach.  "With all that noise I suppose there's little reason I shouldn't call out to whomever lives here.  Any objections?"

Unless his friends tell him not to, he'll call out, "Greetings and peace be with you!  I am Joey, paladin of Avandra.  I and my friends seek safe passage for ourselves and the human woman we seek."

Whether Emerald noticed Kennedy being nervous or not, when he glances at her, she has a look of concern on her face. Though her glance isn't aimed at Kennedy specifically. Just looking forward. So she's probably just worried just like Kennedy.

The creepy woods seem to be eerily silent after a bit. But soon, the trio come across a hut in the woods. The hut has a fence made of sticks. At the top of the sticks on either side of the front entrance are small animal skulls. Possibly mice or other rodents.

Emerald says quietly, "So now comes the question: Do we knock? Or do we sneak?"

Joey doesn't comment on Kennedy's apparent nervousness.  The man nearly died today from black magic, so you can hardly blame him.

"Hmm... Perhaps both would be best.  I'll knock while you two hang back out of sight.  I'm kinda noisy in this armor anyway."

He sloowly approaches the stick hut and calls out to the possible occupant. "My name is Joey.  I am a paladin of Avandra.  I am here in search of a young Human woman.  I'm approaching the door slowly because I encountered a pit trap earlier."

The flying monkeys comment actually makes Emerald snort, stifling a laugh. She hangs back with Kennedy like Joey requests. Her eyes are fixed on Joey, wondering if the paladin will be OK.

Joey hears no response.

Kennedy can hear a faint sound like the hum of electricity (Not that Kennedy or ANYONE the team would know from that sound) coming from inside the hut. He also notices one of the rodent skulls actually moved slightly to "look" at Joey as he approaches.

Kennedy also notices bent grass, much like someone having recently walked on it, that leads around the hut like someone came here and avoided the hut. Likely Laniya since it is coming from where Kennedy, Joey and Emerald all just came from.

Rather suddenly, Joey can see the dirt in front of him starting to scribe something as if an invisible stick were being dragged through it. It reads in haphazard lettering; HELP

The door is actually unlocked and untrapped. When Joey goes to open it, it creeks open.

When Kennedy arrives at the doorway, he would see the same thing Joey does:

Just past the open door is a huge crystal hovering in the middle of what looks like a witch's hut. A large cauldron sits near a fireplace, all kinds of herbs hang on the walls, along with cured animal skins and tiki masks. Inside the huge levitating crystal can be seen an odd black creature:

As graceful as Kennedy's hurdle over the fence was -- a fall from grace isn't the right term here, more like a faceplant. His feet catch beneath him and he finds himself with a mouthful of dead leaves and grass, with a bit of dirt for texture. His undressed salad left something to be desired, so he responded to Joey's question -- oblivious to the door being openned -- "get me some vinagerette at least."

Emerald is trying to figure out if she should feel bad or not for finding Kennedy's faceplant and response to be a touch humorous. But Emerald decides after seeing the imprisoned... whatever that person is, she would simply draw attention to it. "Look, Kennedy... someone's trapped in a crystal." she nudges him gently with her boot.

Meanwhile, in response to Joey, the ground does, in fact begin scribing again. It reads: Open Case ->

The arrow seems to point to a desk and there is a small case on the desk. Like the kind you might keep a necklace or ring in.

Here's where things will get interesting. I have in mind what's in the case, what it does, and why it is able to "help" Reverie. The question is which one of you can and will retrieve the item inside the case. Since Kennedy is faceplanted, chances are Joey will at least see the message first. But it's up to you two who gets the item inside. It isn't an item you'll find anywhere in the books.

Joey doesn't insist on Reverie hanging back further having figured that she must stay close because of the curse.  When he sees Kennedy take care of his first thought: rescue the damsel in distress, he falls back to his second: attack the badguys!  He charges the nearest goblin with a loud roar and a mighty swing of his sword, striking with the flat of his blade to knock it out!

"You shall stand trial for your vile deeds, villains!"

The goblin is knocked out. Another goblin says, "More heathens here to save the devil-worshiping which! Stop them!"

Emerald unsheathes her scimitar and begins singing. A goblin charges the halfling, who seems to be defending herself well.

Reverie is pressed up against a wall, watching the battle ensue. A goblin starts to charge in her direction, but screams and falls to his back, grabbing at his head with one hand while swinging his sword wildly at the air.

(OOC: It would take an outrageous perception check to notice Reverie whispering, much less WHAT she's whispering. Not so much needed to notice the screaming goblin.)

In all the confusion it's hard to make out what's what. Who was screaming? Was it her? She couldn't tell. And the young lad from the tavern was saying something to her. She barely managed to nod to whatever it was he said, as her focus was now on revenge. A bright pink blast of energy rockets over blondie's shoulder hitting one of the chanters square in the face.

"Though I've only juts met you three, if you could help me back to Red Wall I would appreciate it. It appears that a girl like myself needs some help." She looks to Kennedy and gives him a smile, a smile that says you want to help me, don't deny it.

Reverie stands about 5'3", which probably isn't much shorter than Laniya if at all. But she is a little on the petite side of things, making her seem littler than she otherwise would look.

Emerald says, "Make no mistake, miss... we ARE here to help you. And Kennedy holds your life in his hands since he could ask for your execution. But we aren't out for revenge or anything. Thankfully, the trip back is uneventful. When entering town, the people give Reverie suspicious glares and keep their distance. Finally, the officials go up to Joey and take Laniya off his hands. "So who is this?" the official asks, pointing at Reverie.

Emerald says, "This is Reverie... she's under a curse. Joey, Kennedy and I are working on getting rid of the curse."

The official says, "I hate to say it, but please try to make sure she isn't seen much and that you get her out of this town as soon as you can. Her... unusual and dark appearance is making the people uneasy."

The official takes the group to take their statements concerning Laniya. He agrees to put her in prison. "Your statements should be enough for the court since my deputy and I are honored at our word to have taken accurate statements from witnesses. Please... hurry and get on that quest to remove the curse."

The heroes are all but physically pushed out of town. Once out of town, Reverie says,

Being a girl, Emerald is sure to add detail wherever Joey's "male version" lacks details she considers important. Important points include:

-Laniya flirting with Kennedy. Kennedy suddenly acting like his allies didn't exist.
-Emerald spotting Laniya picking Kennedy's pocket and, in turn, picking Laniya's. (Joey didn't know this, so when Emmy brings it up, Joey's face shows some surprise)
-The innkeeper being in on it.
-The scene Joey and Emmy crashed in on when the screaming started.
-Chasing Laniya.
-Reverie's curse.
-Kennedy almost killed Reverie, then apologized and swore his sword to her.
-Laniya found being caught in some twisted looking ritual performed by goblins.
-The goblins insisting Laniya was brainwashing the group into helping her.
-Laniya not apologizing for trying to kill Kennedy.
-Laniya insulting Emerald apparently out of nowhere (remember, Emmy has no idea why Laniya felt insulted)
-Bringing Laniya and goblins back to town as prisoners.
-Town treating Reverie like a dark spirit of some kind.

"...which brings us to now. We're looking into finding a cure for Reverie's curse."

Reverie looks sad, lightly choking on her words.

"And was just using me, in the end."

Emerald asks, "So what did she do to curse you?"

Reverie says,
"She promised me lessons
In some of her ways,
But wanted my essence;
The essence of shade.
She had me gather
The very same things
That made me rather
Become crystalline.

She cast a spell
That I didn't know.
I remember well
Just how it goes:

When calling the Hells
To prepare a spell,
Take an old adage
From the Shadowfell;
The shadows await
For every soul's fate
And no one forever
Truly stays awake.

I ask the shadows to bind this soul
I call on powers from the days of old
See me now and make her cry
As I sing her last lullaby."

Reverie stops, showing clearly that she has recited the whole spell.

"I do not know how much it matters,
What all things she had me gather.
Part of it involved some glass shattered.
And her clothing had to be tattered.
The stuff I gathered was all common-place;
Some dirt, some grass, A bunch of lace."
