TFT  had that  with  their came  too,

anyway. we started  that in  76?  somewhere... then  we  tried   white box  D&D..not  fun,,, we  moved to  TFT..that was great!! still my fav, because   you could customize your character.

Then  2E came out and we went to there.. then 3;5..afte that i had to look for  online  gaming.. Yahoo... dozens  and dozens of sites. most crashed  and Burned..now? I'm here!

Re: OOCC

Ah yes, I played all sorts of Avalon hill games plus tons of other board based war games and still play war games with a close war gamer freind now.  But I did play test a freind of my fathers invented spaceship game by mail (yea mail) that started me into war gaming in 1975 (I think I still have it).  I played 2 games over a year and it never went anywhere after that but I found i loved war gaming.  Then DnD.  box set to start then ADnD 1st ed and went to 2d ed in 2009 then 5th ed in 2020.

And gaming just continues......where are those dice ...

Re: OOCC

Being able to have a Ranger in the city or a fighter casting spells, is exactly why TSR initiated Dual and Multi Class options. It's also why so many people take 1 or 2 levels in Fighter before taking Wizard or Rogue etc. Get he 18% strength etc.

Re: OOCC

In a couple games I'm in, I play a Ranger / Sorceress.

If you asked her, she would have said she was a Ranger by choice, but a Sorceress by DNA.  She had wanted to be a Ranger since the age of 3.  She was raised on the old stories of he days of thte Dragon-Kings war, and used to imagine being a Ranger.

At the age of 8, she entered the Academy, and began her formal education.  At the age of 12, she began Ranger training, and she took to it like a duck to water.

Then, at 14, this damned Sorceress thing hit.  It manifested itself into uncontrolled magical energy, that she accidently burned Bandit's tail with.  Although, she did find it hilarious.

She was taken from Ranger training, and began her Sorceress training, although, she utterly hated it, and dragged her feet in learning it.  Eventually, however she did learn to control it.

The Sorceress part was in her DNA, dating back to the days of the end of the Dragon-King war.  It is said that some of the defeated Dragons took human form and blended into the populace.  That that's where the sorceress power comes from.  So, legend says.

She's a blast to play.

And, yes, she had an animal companion.

Not sure if anyone has ever read the Horseclans series by Robert Adams, but that's where the idea of Bandit came from.  :)

I've played her since 3.0, and it just seems to me that 5.0 isn't so friendly to my Ranger / Sorceress.  then again, I've only played 5.0 a couple of times.

Re: OOCC

through the years...alot of them.. I have been here on PC all the time

BUT..once  my  PC  Broke  down..and i ordered a new one from HP..while i waited  for it to come in, I used  an Amazon Fire   tablet that i got from  Verizon when i got my first smart phone. It wasn't  nad, but i had  a big event   in my space game that was  like the Olympics.. and i had to add  Dice  rolls  and  see who was in the lead ..all PCs  and  about  40  NPCs..That was rough, as i didn't want everyone  waiting.

I used  it a few times since,  as i waited for practice to be over  from Grankid..

in that same Vein , i used  mt cell phone a couple times...i have no clue  how you folks do that..a few of my space game  players  do it  exclusively. Other  do it alot, and use  a Lap  top  when they are home.

Have  no clue  how you folks  do that

Re: OOCC

So, a question:

How would one draw up a Ranger / Sorceress in 5E?

Some frineds are wanting to start a 5E game, and I wantted to bring my girl into the game, she's a reluctant Ranger / Sorcersss.

Using the draconic background.

Would his mean she HAS to have the dragon form stuff?

I used the draconic background as a way to explain her sorceress power, but that was back in 3E.  (yes, she's THAT old.)

Also, Bandit doesn't exactly fit into the beast master descrription.  He and Diana went through a ritual, which bonded them together.  She gave him some intelligence, and wisdom, and he gave her some dex and strength.  An equal trade.

So, how does something like that translate into 5E?  Have flipped through the PHB and can't find anything like that.  Is it a mix of things?  Closet thing is the Beast Master, but again, Bandit doesn't really fit there.

I'm assuming that the multi / dual class is the same or similar.

Anyway, she's a Ranger first, but as a teenager, the Sorceress power matured.  She didn't want it, it was forced upon her.  However, she would learn to harness it.

(She did singe poor Bandit's tail with a wild energy burst, something she found hilarious, but Bandit wouldn't talk to her for two days till she apologized for laughing.)

Once she gained control over the sorceress power, she slowly began to merge it with her Ranger abitlies, and found she actually liked being a sorceress.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Re: OOCC

Diana, I'll think about it more tomorrow.  The basics is a Multi classed character Ranger/Sourcer.  When you get higher levels you take on more about the classes as a subclasses so maybe Ranger all the way with something tied into the Sorcerer via a trait?  Multi class works a little different but the same  lol  its DnD.  Bandit, well he would be a more complicated guy, not a familure but with a story line Bandit could be tied to you somehow as an intellegent beast.  Like a war dog trained to protect you idea or a druid with animals.   Depending on the starting level also dictates Diana in where the character is in class/subclass.

Ok...I'd go plain ranger/sorceress and take advantage of the ritual that bonded Diana and Bandit making it similar to the Paladin power to summon his horse. I'm not sure how your DM would handle it, but I myself as a DM woldn't force the draconic heritage (I kinda dislike it, so you know) and let ya chose whatever fits better for your character. Anyhow, I'm just chilling at Outback right now....Imma take a look at D&D Beyond and see what I can get from the materials I have there.

Re: OOCC

This is simple.

In 5th Ed, you can increase levels and add different classes when you level up, so start as a Ranger, then Sorcerer then go back and up a level in Ranger again or Sorcerer if you like or even Warlock.
Yes you'll have the Draconic however, you get to choose which Dragon type.

When it comes to Bandit, talk to your GM.
I'd personally say a gift from your Patron as a Bonded/Attuned Magical (1 of your 3)

Re: OOCC

Okay.

But a question, and I'm just curious, but it's been 5,000 years, wouldn't DNA have changed over that time, and the Dragon trait gone away over time?

I can uderstand how the magic would remain, makes sense, but the dragon part?

Re: OOCC

From what I know...and I have a sorcerer with that bloodline...there isn't any 'dragon form' aside from you can bring forth wings at a high enough level. Really, you just gain perks of whatever dragon bloodline you are from like resistances and such.

My old rattie boy, Ronnie is at the vet's, he's been struggling with his back legs the last few weeks, today he was using them really well, still only a out 50%, better than 5% though.
So my mind, especially with this head cold, has been a bit woolly. May not be posting quite as regularly.
This year, with illnesses, can go in the bin.

Re: OOCC

I liked Hamsters. had a bunch from say? 14-18..then after i got  married  we had  dozens, until the Kids   decided they didn';t like 'cage  cleaning day"

My first one, I taught to come to me, to get a sunflower  seed, if  i whistled.. and when i had him out  running around , if he  went under soemthing  , I would whistle  and he would  come out   standing on his hind legs.... It also saved his life, because, at that time  This house had forced  air coal ( the flood  ended that).. and the good  ball went  down the  vent   and was  trapped between the Boiler and  the Jacket.... i rigged  a  habitrail  intersection , with  two  ends closed  and  some   fos inside..  lowered the    thing  down inside the  furnace  and whistled  a bunch..my dad  was mad, said he wasn't takiing the  furnace apart for a HAmster..

then?  Just like  fishing  i hear thumps  as the plastic hit the  metal  and the    line  felt heavy, i pulled thre   interestion up( 4 feet off the ground)..and there was the  Hamster, look out over the top , like a Tank commander.

so? yeah? rodents  are smart if you take the  time to teach them..'cept Guiney   Pigs, never liked them., never had  one. and when the kids were small we only got hamsters, until they moved up the line to cats and dogs.
