Re: Diagon Alley (August 30 2021)
Bao-Yu was pretty much unaware of Beth's thoughts, as they went out. "Oh gosh" she said tightening her grip on Beth's arm looking at the smoke. "My goodness" she added trying to process what she saw "What sort of a fire would it need to be for Wizards not to just put it out..."  her voice trailed off. The answer to that question was of course obvious. The fire that had nearly killed her and Jack once before. Fiendfyre. And it was an answer she didn't to think about. A scared look came into her eyes

"Beth" she said quietly "I would like to play it safe. Very safe." her mind was darting. Back to the first time she and Beth had gone shopping to buy their first wands. The Nightmare had attacked. There had been fires. There had been summoned monsters: Loquars that were as bad in their own way as dementors. There had been fully trained Combat Witches and Wizards going around attacking and killing children. And the Nightmare had planned it. Marked out the escape routes. She, Nicole, Declan and Jennifer had foiled the main target: the wand shop. All in all though she didn't want to foil anything this time. She'd done her share of foiling, other people could sort it out.

"Let's go to Gringotts." she suggested. The goblins were notorious for their defences. "We'll go for a meal after it's all over"

Re: Diagon Alley (August 30 2021)
Athene was working on finishing her ice cream cone when Kiri mentioned the fire.  She swallowed and held up one hand, "It's not us.  I swear this Alley is cursed or something."

She craned her neck to look out the window.  "Do we have to worry about the fire spreading here do you think?"

Re: Diagon Alley (August 30 2021)
“Really, most of our trips here have been uneventful,” she added.  Still, she couldn’t help but remember the incident that had taken place in the ice cream parlor two years ago.  A glance at Mrs. Jones’ expression indicated that she appeared to be having similar thoughts.

Shifting her position slightly, she looked out the window with a thoughtful frown.  “It looks like the fire is several shops away and the firefighters are already here.  We should be fine.  There are only a couple of shops in that direction where a fire might be especially dangerous.   And even if it did manage to spread to Gamble and Japes or the potions shop, I’m sure the firefighters would know how to deal with the fireworks or the potion fumes.”

Claire glanced at Da. "Where were Mum and grandmum going?"  She sounded nervous, the potion shop had been one of the places they had wanted to go.  She took James's hand almost reflexively.

Nearly done with his ice cream when the firefighters ran past, Ganiah ditched the rest of it in a rubbish bin and took off to see what he could see. This was the biggest opportunity for adventure since he arrived in London and he wasn't about to pass it up!

Akane watched as events unfolded and everyone started talking about a fire down the road although nobody seemed particularly concerned so she remained calm but unsure of what to do.

Re: Diagon Alley (August 30 2021)
Beth glanced at Jade with a very understanding and relieved look. Surviving horror was one thing; surviving it unscarred was quite another. Beth put on the brave show but she was a tortured wreck inside sometimes. She couldn't even imagine how Jade managed to cope. She happily linked her arms with Jade and made for the very solid looking, secure, and definitely fire proof bank.

Meanwhile, at the Ice Cream shop, the gang were all enjoying their deserts and chit-chat when Mrs. Lovegood stepped out the door and said in as matter of fact a way as humanly possible, "Oh, Mister Ollivander has the rottenest of luck."

Xenatia stepped up beside her and glanced toward the commotion and said, "Oh?"

Luna nodded, "It seems that Madame Tintwaddle's place had caught fire."

The two women nodded and made a rather mundane nod at the absurd fact even as Ganiah walks by and down the street. A ways along he comes to a small crowd of people gathered round watching a small building roast. A woman outside it with half a head of fiery red hair and another half of crispy burnt hair was shrieking about her potions while the firefighter used their wands to ward the flames from nearby building. Right next door was the world famous Ollivaner's wand shop and that must be the old man himself standing and watching the fire like a man who had seen a ghost.

A look of concern crossed Amanda’s face as Claire nervously asked about her Mum and Grandmum.  “I think we’re mostly finished with our ice cream.  While I’m sure they are fine, we could go look for them with you and make sure,” she offered.

Re: Diagon Alley (August 30 2021)
Bao-Yu was pretty white liped until they got to Gringotts. As they crossed the wwarded entrance with lots of guards around she took a deep breath of relief. "Probably nothing" she muttered and squeezed Beth's arm. "Thanks" she added quietly and began scanning for 'other ways out': what in the muggle world they would call 'fire exits'. She also started looking for dodgy wizards and witches. Given her luck the whole fire business was actually just a distraction for a bank heist...

Kiri shrugged.  "let's go.  if there are too many people rubbernecking, we'll come back, but hopefully, we'll see your mum."  She stood up and headed to the door.  Her parents weren't in here yet, so she didn't have to worry about them.  hopefully the everpresent Alfred would just follow her.

Claire looked at Da, obviously looking for permission, and stood up to follow Kiri.  She hadn't let go of James hand yet, but seemed unaware she was holding it.  :Let's. .  .?"

Amanda nodded and quickly disposed of her trash, stopping briefly by the nearby table where Mrs. Jones was sitting to make certain that it would be okay.  A slight frown crossed the housekeepers face, but after a moments consideration she agreed.  Though, she did accompany Amanda when she rejoined the others at the door.

Re: Diagon Alley (August 30 2021)
everything in Gringotts seemed safe as could be though the Golbins seemed to have brought in a few additional guards. They had learned harsh lesson from the last two decades of nefarious wizarding behavior and their bank was still considered one of the world's most secure establishments, despite what the goblins tended to refer to as "the Potter incident." Beth stood there being eyed by goblins and blanched a bit as she turned to look at Jade. She shrugged and looked around then moved to some benches meant for waiting patrons and sat rather primly and motioned for Jade to join her. The goblins gave them sour looks as they took up space without intending to do business, but they wouldn't question them just yet. They could still be possible patrons yet.

Meanwhile, at the burning alchemy shop, fire fighting wizards were casting spells qu8ickly and with experience and the blaze seemed under control. While a few were putting water spells into key places, most were using more direct magic to simply snuff the fire itself. It was a credit to the nature of the fire that their much more effective tactics were taking this long to work.

Another group of wizards in black robes were trying their best to keep the gawking crowd of witches and wizards. With the August 30 crowds and the nature of humanity, the crowd was quite thick with those watching someone else's misfortune. Looking about, the group quickly spotted a group of people being looked over by some medi-wizards. Claire's mum was amongst them and seemed fine if a bit nonplussed to being fretted over by, as she was saying rather garrulously, "jumped up, fresh-faced, boys still in their nappies." She was, after all, a very competent healer herself.

James had blinked a bit at the sudden shift in attitudes and had hurried to finish his ice cream as he was pulled away from the table. He had not let go of Claire's hand when she moved and had looked a bit sheepish at Da as they went by but did not look to see if he was being glared at suspiciously.  Instead, he tried for one last mouthful of ice cream and ended with about half of it on his face and a bit in his mouth which he swallowed quick then looked to Claire. She seemed a bit panicked and he could understand that. Soon, he was running beside her instead of behind and he had a determined look on his face as well. Determined to do what he had no idea, but he would help what he could.

Athene followed along, helping to look for Claire's mum.  "There she is!  Looks like she's being looked after by a medic.  Let's stay out of the way.  Last thing we need is for the Headmaster to give us detentions before the year even starts."

'And he would too.' she grumbled in her head.  He'd probably blame them for the fire if he could.

Re: Diagon Alley (August 30 2021)
Bao-Yu breathed another sigh of relief. Her biggest worry now was the goblins taking offense at them being here. But she had a vault here now, and she could just ask to get something out of it, if she had to. She was tempted... very tempted... to go see the vault now. She loved roller coasters, and the Goblin ride was tremendous fun! Her main goal, though, would be to get even further away from any Combat Wizards or Witches that were with the fire. For all she knew though, the main goal was going to be one of the vaults: just like when You Know Who raided Gringotts a couple of decades ago.

So all in all it was probably best to just wait

"How long have you been in the UK Beth?" Bao-Yu asked, while her eyes flitted backwards and forwards assessing all the other customers for the possibility of being baddies. Mostly she wanted to ask 'was this sort of thing normal in this country ruled by dark sorcerers', but she couldn't work out how to phrase it nicely.

Amanda kept pace with the others as they searched for Claire’s mum and grandmum.  She relaxed slightly as Athene spotted Mrs. Cowlings and, following her fellow Ravenclaw’s suggestion, did her best to stay back and out of the way.  Though, she certainly didn’t blame Claire for trying to break through the line to get her Mum.  After all, had the situation been reversed, Amanda likely would have done the same.

As they watched the alchemy shop burn and looked around for Claire’s grandmum, Amanda said, “I wonder why Mrs. Lovegood said that the fire was bad luck for Mr. Ollivander.  While his shop is nearby, it seems to be fine.  If anyone is having a horrible day, it’s Mrs. Tintwaddle.”

Amanda nodded an acknowledgement of Athene and Kiri’s comments as she continued to look around.  If she happened to think about it tomorrow, maybe she would ask Xenatia.  It should be simple enough.  After all, they shared the same house.  “I’m glad that the fire fighting wizards were able to contain the blaze before it spread.   Though, I feel sorry for Mrs. Tintwaddle.”

Re: Diagon Alley (August 30 2021)
James did his best to look very embarrassed as Claire's mum gave the intertwined hands a suspicious look then looked at Claire, "She's probably about, dear. GO have a look while I get these boys to leave me be, kay?" James looked around for the other woman, not knowing Claire's grandmum overly well, and thought he spotted her as the crowd was thinning.

With the fires dying down and the crowd dispersing, it was obvious that the hulabaloo was coming to an end. The worst of it appeared to be over now and only the distraught alchemist was the worst for all of it.

Back at Gringott's, Beth looked thoughtful for a few seconds, "Oh, not long.Parents wanted to see a few things like the Tower and Godric's Hollow, typical English wizarding tourist dribble. We got in last week and it has been a real bore since then. Most of my larger things were shipped directly to Hogwarts to be stored... uh, wherever we are going to be staying. Know much about the dusty old place?" As she spoke, Beth's eyes idly wandered around the room taking in the scenery to keep her interest as she conversed. It was pretty typical, Beth had one of those minds that never stopped doing stuff. The only time she truly focused and calmed down was when she played her music.

In reply to Hogwarts Academy (msg # 648):

Claire finally realised she was still holding James' hand, had she been dragging him all over creation? and if Mum was reacting, Da probably would too.  Blushing, she reluctantly let go and backed up, looking around at the crowd.  She finally saw Lottie Parker pushing through the crowd toward them all.

As the crowd began to disperse, Mrs. Jones mentioned that it was time for them to be heading home as well.  Amanda said her goodbyes to the others, taking an extra moment to mention to Athene that she might want to check out the pet store.  “They have all sorts of exotic animals on display including some adorable squirrels and hedgehogs and even a live cobra.  According to a student I met, the some of the older students at Uagadou are allowed to have snakes as familiars.  Apparently, parseltounge is a fairly common talent there.  They associate bats with dark magic instead of snakes."

Re: Diagon Alley (August 30 2021)
Bao-Yu had been half listening to Beth's words, enjoying them as a way of not worrying about the chaos happening so close to them. "I don't know much about Hogwarts" she admitted a little distractedly "It's fairly old for a western school. Got lots of ghosts. And was the scene of some horrible battles a couple of decades ago." she pursed her lips together thinking about it "I told you I met a person from their while I was at a break in filming. She seemed nice. And that's a good recommendation: You meet people from Durmstrang and you just tend to get creeped out. Mind you she was saying that they had had hassle from teachers that had favourites and all sorts of weirdness" she half laughed "Glad Mrs Noble is here. She won't put up with any of that rubbish. 'Wham Bang, and in goes the boot'."

The sounds seemed to have died down

"I guess it's getting better now." she took a deep breath and let it out with a sound of relief "Well it was nice not to be at the heart of the trouble for a change" she turned and punched Beth on the shoulder "I think I'm going to get out of here now. Do you fancy a walk around London? I've got some 'must does' from trip advisor. Father said I should go see the Chinese Church: there's a priest there that he knows, and Mother while said the Tate Modern isn't worth the time to walk in, the National Portrait Gallery is pretty cool. That's only about five minutes away apparently" she stood and offered Beth an arm "What do you say... shall we go and be culture vultures?"

Re: Diagon Alley (August 30 2021)
Slowly, the events wound down, and the crowds dispersed from Diagon Alley.

James had felt a bit of a pang when Claire's hand had pulled away, but he knew how it was with her family. They were super protective and the events of the last year had given him some insight as to why. He couldn't blame them at all. He'd go to hell and back to protect Claire, how must her actual family feel. He glanced around at his best friends and knew he'd go pretty far for them as well. As the fire fighters slowly reduced the shop to a frame of burnt boards, James couldn't help but wonder what Hogwarts had in store for them this year? He hoped it was whatever a normal school year was supposed to be like. He'd had enough with evil, adventure, and chaos; he'd like a nice, quiet year where Claire asked him to the formal, Robert and Athene got along, and maybe Claire'd hold his hand around her Da? Was that so much to ask.

As far as buddies went, Beth was feeling pretty awesome about her time with Jade. She'd forgotten how the Chinese girl made her feel sometimes, but most of that was just smoldering embers at this point. Beth was most happy about that. That she could be "just friends" with Jade. She happily accepted to go Lookie-loo with Jade around London. Art wasn't exactly her cup of tea, but the Church sounded neat and Beth wanted to visit a couple iconic punk rock locales in Soho if they could.

Eventually, the various friends and new acquaintances made their farewells that night and dispersed to their various accommodations. James went back to Mr. Snape's house, Beth invited Jade over to her considerably less fancy room at the Leaky Cauldron for some late night gossip, and people made plans to take the train to Hogwarts. Many of the foreign schools had arranged their own conveyance, especially the more local groups like Beauxbatons or Durmstrangs, but several schools, including SWI, were using the train from London to the wilds of Scotland.

I know its been a long while getting here, but lets load up on the Express and get moving? I got a long holiday weekend for Dragon Boat Festival and the gumption to get us to Hogwarts itself. SO, decide if you are riding the train or taking other transportation. I hope our guests are still with us after the... umm, long dry spell. LOL, games don't go this long without that sort of thing but I always get us moving eventually, yeah? I'll bump the Hogwarts Express.
