Hogsmeade
Very little has changed in Hogsmeade over the years other than the Three Broomsticks now being operated by Dean Thomas and Zonko's having been bought out by George Weasley.  Many wizards and witches still live here and with the stringent laws and masquerade hiding them being felled more have moved in to get away from the suspicions of muggles.  The greatest change is the tearing down of the shrieking shack and building of an orphanage for children of magical parents who were orphaned in the wars.

Re: Hogsmeade
Feb 15th, 2020

Athene and Prof. Bones walked into the wizarding village dressed in their winter gear on the Saturday following her request to visit the orphanage.  She had approached the Headmaster a week after the incident in the Chamber of Secrets and he had readily agreed that a first hand visit would be an excellent way for the second year girl to make up her mind.

Even though the orphanage was on the same side of the village as the road leading to the school, Prof. Bones took her through the village first; pointing out all the various shops and where the Owl Post Office was located.  Athene had seen the village before of course when she had visited Claire over the holidays, but she humored her sponsor none the less.  One shop she hadn't noticed before was Dervish and Banges.  It seemed that they sold and repaired magical instruments and stuff.

After their turn around the village, they headed to the orphanage.  Compared to most of the buildings in town, it was of fairly new construction.  It still had the very steep rooftop that seemed so popular here but instead of the irregularly shaped stones used in the walls, this one had been mostly plastered smooth and whitewashed, only the stone work which stuck out a few inches around the windows, doors and up the corners were a natural dark brown stone.  There were three kids playing outside, who waved to them, but continued on with their game as Athene and Cordelia went inside.

They were met inside by three man and one woman.  The first was an tall, tin, very grumpy-looking old man with a great deal of long grey hair and a beard.  He had blue eyes and wore glasses.  Prof. Bones introduced him as Aberforth Dumbledore, director of the orphanage.  Next was Witch Cassiopeia Hanley, the mediwitch for the place.  She could best be described as middle aged, short, and stout, but with a smiling face.  Thirdly was Amos Meadows, the cook.  He was a very tall, barrel chested man with dark curly hair and muttonchops.  Rounding out this group was a young man wearing a black and white quidditch uniform with a magpie on the front and back.  His name was Devlin Vance and he was the athletics director who came once a month to make sure the children were exercising and keeping fit.  After the introductions were done, Dumbledore gruffly told them he had to get back to the Hog's Head and toddled off; leaving Witch Hanley in charge to give the tour.

The ground floor was dominated by the dinning hall on one side; it looked kind of like a smaller version of the Great Hall at Hogwarts save it didn't have a vaulted magical ceiling and only had two rows of tables and benches for the kids instead of four.  There was a table with chairs at the head of the room for the staff members.  Vance explained that when when the weather was poor they would clear away the tables so that the children could exercise and play inside.  The other half of the floor was taken up by the kitchen, Cook Meadows' quarters, the infirmary and the director's office.  There was also a broom closet under the stairs which held all of Vance's equipment and the communal children's toys.  Meadows left the tour at this point to start preparing dinner.

The first floor held the 2 dormitories ( one for the boys and the other the girls) and 6 private rooms.  Witch Hanley explained that when the orphanage was first built they had been filled to the rafters with an amazing 24 children who had been orphaned in the war, but now there were only 13 in residence; including the 5 children attending Hogwarts at the moment (2 of whom were in their final year; Henry Deacon a third year Hufflepuff; Tomas Carrow- who was in Athene's year in Slytherin; and Ambrosia Sweets a first year Gryffindor).

Athene met a few of the children as she toured the floor.  Just like at Howley, everyone pretty much kept the majority of their things in a footlocker, with the rest in the narrow wardrobe next to their bed, or on the small writing desk on the other side.  A few of the older kids took over the private rooms when the students were away at Hogwarts, but not all of them.  Since there wasn't as many kids as the dorms could hold, they had spread out through the dorms; the unused beds having been tucked up in the attic and a few of the beds in the corners had privacy screens to give the illusion of having their own room to themselves.  The private rooms were narrow, with built in wardrobes, but they were quiet and you could lock the door which was nice.  The Nurse's quarters was also on this floor.

All in all, Athene left with the impression that is wasn't a bad establishment.  Pretty much on par with Howley as far as how the staff took care of the kids.  Dumbledore left much to be desired, but the rest of the staff made up for his gruff demeanor.  The kids seemed to be on par with most kids in the system and none of them gave her the impression that they were being treated badly.  They asked a lot of questions about where she lived now and were a bit jealous that Howley used several smaller dorms which held only 4 or 5 kids per room in addition to the older kids' single rooms.  They were amazed when she told them that Howleys was usually filled to capacity and that there were beds for around 60.  They were even more amazed to find out that there was more than one orphanage for muggles.  Athene did explain that a lot of kids got placed in foster homes as well and that led to her explaining about government grants and subsidies for fostering when the kids asked why they didn't just get adopted.

Re: Hogsmeade
Morning, July 15

Amanda was glancing through her copy of the Daily Prophet as she ate her breakfast when she noticed Rita’s article about the Lestranges' escape.  The feeling of dread that had been fading over the last few weeks surged.  A bit worried that her family might decided to take Rita’s advise about locking up their children for their own safety, Amanda bolted the rest of her oatmeal and then, calling out to Mrs. Jones that she was visiting her friends, hurried off to the orphanage to warn Athene about the escape.

“Professor Lestrange and her husband both escaped from Azkhaban.”  Amanda offered the now somewhat crumpled edition of the Daily Prophet to Athene.  “According to the Prime Minister, additional security is being assigned to protect those people they might have a grudge against.  But, they escaped almost two weeks ago, and I haven’t noticed any extra aurors in the village.  Have you?”

Athene's face blanched but then a steely look took over.  "No, I haven't.  But if they're using me and Claire as bait, then we wouldn't now would we?"  Her eyes dart back and forth as she thinks furiously for a minute.  "Come with me to the shop?  I need to send off a few letters but I can't be late for work.  I'm not going to give that cow the satisfaction of making me hide from her or give up my dreams."

Re: Hogsmeade
Amanda nodded, “Of course.”  A measure of Athene’s determination was reflected in Amanda’s expression, “and you’re right.  We aren’t going to let her ruin our summer.”

She attempted to provide a bit of reassurance as she walked with Athene towards the shop, “The Lestranges might not be anywhere near Hogsmeade.  After all, they have to realize that if they’re caught, they’ll be kissed.  The smart thing to do would be to take Lesandra and flee the country.”  Of course, Amanda couldn’t keep a bit of doubt from creeping into her voice.  Based on the way Bellatrix Lestrange had looked in the picture, Amanda had a feeling she wouldn’t be taking the smart approach.

“In any case, there are almost always adults around.  If you see them and yell for help, someone should be close enough to hear you.”

Re: Hogsmeade
"My first concern isn't here at Hogsmeade.  I'm afraid Bat-Shit-Crazy'll go to London looking for me there.  She use to be a professor so it's likely that she's seen my file some point in the last year or two, and knows where I use to live.  And as for Lysandra, I don't think Bellatrix has ever given much thought to her safety or well-being... not one bit."

Once at the shop, she asked the owners if she can have a moment to write some quick letters of warning to some people in London.  If need be she'd ask Amanda to write them while she dictated and did whatever work was most pressing to finish first.  In the end she had two letters done; one for Sally and the second to the Matron of Howleys.  She had considered writing to Mrs. Hampson, but was afraid that informing her that a mad witch and her husband were on the lam after escaping a magical prison might just give the old gal a heart attack.  She handed Amanda the sealed letters and the knuts she'd need to mail off the letters.

Re: Hogsmeade
Amanda felt a little foolish as Athene reminded her that the insane former professor was more likely to look for her in London than Hogsmeade.  She could easily see why her friend had looked so worried.  Muggles would be even less able to defend themselves against the insane professor than the first and second years had been last February.  She found herself hoping that Athene’s friends and the adults at the orphanage where she used to live would be alright.

While part of her wanted to protest when Athene asserted that Bellatrix didn’t care about Lysandra’s safety or well-being, parents were supposed to care about their children after all, she couldn’t help but remember the expression on Lysandra’s face when she was told she would be serving detention with her mother during their first year.  And, for just a moment, she felt a surge of sympathy for her classmate.  “It has to be horrible having someone like Professor Lestrange for a parent, especially if you are right.”

Amanda waited patiently for Athene to write her letters or took dictation if needed.  While she was still less confident on Athene’s bicycle than she was on a broom, when Athene offered to let her use it to deliver the letters and to warn Claire, she readily agreed.  “I hope that your friends in London will be alright,”  She said as she prepared to ride off.  “And, if there’s anything else I can do to help, just let me know.”

It didn’t take long for Amanda to reach the Owl Post Office and soon the letters were speeding towards London and Amanda was riding towards Claire’s house.

Amanda nodded sympathetically in response to Claire’s comment.  The thought that her parents might decide to keep her confined for the rest of the summer had been her first reaction as well.  Following Claire, she answered, “Athene is at work.  She said she wasn’t going to let Professor Lestrange’s escape ruin her summer or force her to give up her dreams.  She did send some letters to London though, to warn her friends there about the escape.  She was concerned the Lestranges would look for her there rather than in Hogsmeade.”

Amanda considered for a moment, but nothing particularly interesting or helpful was coming to mind, especially since she was feeling a bit reluctant to wander too far away from the more populated areas of the village.  “I’m not sure really.  But, if you’re going to be stuck at home for the rest of the summer, we should try to do something fun.”

She added,  “Hopefully your parents won’t make you stay home all summer.  But if they do, Athene and I will come over all the time to visit.  And hopefully they’ll realize that you’d probably be as safe at Hogwarts as you are here, and won’t keep you at home or send you off to France.  Of course, if they do send you to Beaubaxtons, that might end up convincing my parents to do the same.”

The girls spent about 2 hours running around HOgsmeade before Grandmum read the paper and Da went hunting.  Claire was dragged back home and was only let out when she was walked to Amanda's house, with orders to stay inside, which wasn't very often.  One of her adults accompanied her on the trip to France, and it took alot of argument from Claire, including an agreement to stay with one of them at all time, for her to get to go to Hogsmeade to buy her school supplies, as compared to haveing one of the adults go fetch them.  On the upside, she learned a whole lot of homemaker skills, including cooking, cleaning, sewing and knitting spells.  Her garden gnome suffered since she wasn't let outside much to garden.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
The day dawned bright. It was a somewhat chilly October Saturday and the children at Hogwarts were abuzz at the breakfast table. Aside froma  few students who did not have permission or who had earned academic censure, today was a Hogsmeade day and that meant the joke shop, butterbeer, and candy. It also meant just getting out of Hogwarts fro an afternoon. As big and neat as the castle might, as rife with adventure as it could be, a change of scenery was a welcome thing for the students. No books, no quills, and no scowling teachers. Wands could be carried but were not to be used unless in emergency, each student knew that was part of the permission slip their parents had signed and the contract they signed as well.

The last Thursday night, all the third years had been gathered in a classroom and the four heads of house had gone over the terms of conduct. Professors LeFey and Aquila both were adamant in their assertion that violators would have Hogsmeade privileges revoked temporarily for infractions and permanently for repeat infractions. They went over the many things for sale in Weaseleys' Wizard Wheezes that were not allowed back int eh school and told students that butterbeer was fine in moderation but that no actual alcohol for those that did not qualify.

Still, it could barely copntain the excitement, especially for those students who had never spent a serious amount of time in a wizarding village. Noriko, Astrid, Scorpiana, Corrine and Mary-Catherine were giggling and walking as a group near the back of the group and no indication was given to anyone other than Lysandra not to join. In fact, they invited several of the other girls and boys from Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw to join them. Most did not, rpeferring to glomp together in their own microgroups.

Corinna, Robert's girlfriend as she often called herself, stole her man away and had him walking with her, her two friends, and their boyfriends.

Lysandra seemed not to acknowledge the exclusion of her from the group in the back as she walked with Tomas, Dolores, Rolf, and Regulus near the front.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
Athene had been looking forward to today since the beginning of the month, but she was also a bit wary as well.  In addition to needing to keep an eye out for the Lestranges, now she also had to keep an eye out for the thrice-damned reporter, Rita Skeeter.  She was pleased that none of the other students had bothered Claire about Skeeter's latest exposé and had been pleasantly surprised that Lysandra hadn't either.

Since it was a chilly day, Athene wore her hoodie along with her mundane clothes.  This served two purposes.  One, it was nice and warm.  And two, Mehen could hide inside it and not be seen.  He snuggled down in a casual loop around her shoulders.  she knew from practicing, that she could raise the hoodie and no one would see him slither up into her hair so he could whisper in her ear.

When they were finally released to start their walk to town and she noticed that the Slytherins were still pretty much divided, she pretended to stop and tie her shoelaces; allowing even Lysandra's group to get ahead of her.  She then jogged up until she was even with the Slytherin girl.  In a casual tone she said, "Hey, Lysandra.  Hope you guys have a fun time in Hogsmeade." before sprinting ahead again to catch up to Amanda and Claire.  She knew it wasn't likely that they would ever be BFFs, but good behavior should be rewarded after all.  Lord knows she probably never got that from her mother.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
Amanda had completed most of her homework on Friday night.  So, when Hogsmeade Saturday arrived, she was ready to enjoy a day away from her studies.  Earlier that week, she had asked both Kiri and Lloyd if they wanted her to bring anything from Hogsmeade for them.  (If Nik has been spending much time with the group, he was asked as well.)  During one of her visits to the Slytherin table, she had casually asked the same question of Miles.  Despite the distance between them, he was family and she continued to make occasional efforts to bridge the gap.  Since she grew up in the village, she had also made a few suggestions to those of her friends and acquaintances who hadn’t spent much time there about places other than Honeydukes, Weaseleys' Wizard Wheezes, and the Hogs Head that she thought they might enjoy visiting.

Amanda, dressed in a casual dark blue robe and a warm cloak, was wearing a relaxed smile as she walked towards the village with her friends.  An invitation to for them to join the group of third year girls was greeted with a friendly grin and a, “We already have a few plans.  But, maybe we can all get together for a butterbeer before heading back to Hogwarts tonight?”

She was still smiling when Athene rejoined the group and glancing over she asked her friends, “What do you want to do first?”

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
Claire had been working on her homework up to the last minute to lunchtime.  She wanted to go to Hogsmeade, but at the same time, she wanted to go take a nap.  SHe'd been so busy over the last few weeks that she hadn't even worried about the stuff from last year, and the books or any of it.  So she walked out with James toward the gate where Da was waiting.

Some of the students gave a glance to the older man waiting by the gate, in his dusty breeches and work boots, heavy wool jacket and cap over shirt and waistcoat, but most didn't.  He watched the students pass, then turned and followed the last of them toward Hogsmeade.

Claire was a little relieved, she'd been sure Da was going to insist on being right beside her the whole time.  Something else to make people stare at her.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
For James, the idea of going to Hogsmeade had been exciting, and he had tried to catch up on his homework, but there was a bit to be done yet when he got back that evening. Still, he was walking along with his friends out of the castle and mostly ignoring the other students, just seemed easier that way.

He was moving an inch closer to Claire when eh spotted her Da and took a good step away. He didn't like it, but he knew that she was still keeping things from her parents. He didn't need the old man glaring at him the entire trip. Still, he was glad when the man fell to the back and seemed to be chatting with one of the aurors a bit. Still, he didn't risk being closer to Claire than seemed appropriate for a good friend.

The debate on where to go, though, had him flumoxed. He had wanted to got to exactly the places Athene mentioned first, and had not even wanted or planned to visit Gladrags, he had all the clothes he needed, yeah? Still, he glanced at his friends and knew he was outvoted and would follow along anyway. He glanced wistfully over at Robert and wished he'd have his best mate along for the trip. He was already imagining himself loaded down with bags and stuff, like in the movies.

"Alright, as long as we pop by Weaseley's at some point when all the good stuff is still in stock. Oh, and I wanted to visit the pub, too..."

Miles asked for nothing and is only barely civil to Amanda because they are family.

Athene shrugged, It's a Saturday, so all the Hogsmeade orphans will be out and about; either doing odd jobs for shrapnel or traipsing about."  Then she got a conspiratorial grin on her face and added, "Do you know that the orphanage was build on the site of Shrieking Shack?  A place so haunted that they had to board it up completely so that the ghosts couldn't get out?"  Not that she believed in dangerous ghosts, not with all the ghosts in Hogwarts after all, but it was a fun story to tell to spook younger kids or for a lark.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
Amanda nodded in response to Claire’s question, “I promised my parents that I’d stop by for a visit while we were here and Mrs. Jones said she’d be making a fresh batch of oatmeal cookies.”

She glanced over with an interested expression when Athene told them about the Shrieking Shack.  “I wonder whose ghost used to haunt it.  If it was considered dangerous enough that they had to board up the building, it was probably the ghost of a criminal.  Considering that most ghosts haunt either the places they spent the most time during their lives, or the place they died, we might be able to find out by researching what the building was used for before it became the Shrieking Shack.”  She gave a small shrug, “Not that I have enough free time for that this year.  Sometimes it seems like each of our professors thinks theirs is the only class we have homework for.”  The complaint was made in a light tone.  After all, while she might have liked a little more free time, she wasn’t having much trouble keeping up with the workload.

Although Amanda wasn’t looking for anything in particular, her gaze drifted to the new clothing on display as they entered the store.  “Oh....look at that one,” she indicated a beautiful set of silver dress robes trimmed in blue.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
Athene looked at the dress and shook her head, "It would be better if it was blue and gold... more "Ravenclawy" if you know what I mean.  Besides with your skin, eyes and hair, you should stick to more autumn colors rather than winter ones."  She dug through the racks nearby and pulled out two different robes.  One was deep purple with golden celtic embroidery and the other was blue with burnt gold flowery trim.

"Now these are more what you should go for."  She handed Amanda the two robes and pointed to the mirror in the corner.  "Go see what I mean."

Secretly she thought that the silver and blue dress would look good on herself, but she knew better than to even look at the price tags of anything in the front of the shop.  The back of the shop would be where she'd find anything.  She slowly made her way to the back, pretending to look at stuff but not really trying until she was where the discount clothes were arranged.

She found a dark blue colored robes with light grey piping that looked pretty good, but honestly where would she wear it?

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
James was standing very uncomfortably off to one side as dresses and colors started becoming the topic of conversation. James had never liked dressing up and had a normal, healthy boy's attitude toward clean clothes as well. His mother used to berate him all the time and he would probably get an earfull from Professor Bones too if it weren't for the house elves. Still, one thing about this sidetrip did have him excited.

He glanced toward the shop's window to check if Mr. Cowlings was still outside. He was standing in front of the shop in the street, watching many of the children but especially Gladrags while chatting with auror Thrussington. Hogsmeade was ado with hogwarts students and resembled a marlstrom.

James moved closer to Claire and smiled at her. He was just reaching into his pocket when out of the corner of his eye he otted a dark face peering out of the back of the shop. He frowned, froze, and stared at the face, wasn't it looking at Claire.  "Hey, Claire, do you know tha... Hey, where'd they go?"

The dirty, dark face was gone. His brow furrowed in confusion and he pulled a hand out of his pocket to shield his eyes from window glare to see if he the figure was somewhere deeper in shadow. In his hands was a scarf in Hufflepuff colors, ""Bloody hell, I swear I saw someone staring at you Claire."

He suddenly notice the scarf, blushed, and hid them behind his back.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
Claire startled, she'd been looking at a display of knitted goods, a one of which she'd made, homework or no, she still had her piecework.  "Wha"  She glanced toward the back of the shop where he was staring.  "Well, come on, we can go in the back, I work here, . Just don't touch anything."  She grabbed his hand and headed in the direction he was staring.  "Mum.  I'm gonna pick up my piecework.", as they passed into the back of the shop heading toward the back room.

Amanda accepted the suggested robes with a smile, “these look pretty too,” she agreed as she headed towards the changing area.  She paused a few times as she strolled towards the corner of the store, adding various items to the collection of clothing.

After trying on several different outfits, she quickly decided on a favorite and after admiring it in the mirror for a while went looking for her friends to get their opinion.  She wasn’t sure where Claire and James were, but after a brief search she found Athene in the back of the store.

“What do you think?,” she asked with a pleased smile.  Athene had been right, the purple robe with golden embroidery did a wonderful job of complementing Amanda’s complexion.  Moreover, the cut succeeded in making her look at least a year older, hinting at curves that had not yet fully developed.  “I’m fairly certain that I’m going to put it on my Christmas list,” she said as she posed for her friend.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
Athene was giggling when Amanda came over with the purple robes on.  She had softly asked for Mehen's opinion of the plum robes and he had told her in no uncertain terms that the robes were shaped nicely but he couldn't give any advice on the color seeing as how he didn't see colors.  Besides, all he cared about was whether or not she was there, not what she was wearing.

Looking over at her friend she gave her a thumbs up.  "Definitely the robes for you."  She put the plum robes back on the rack and looked around a bit puzzled, "Where's James and Claire?  Did they run off for a quick snog?" she whispered, not wanting Claire's mum overhearing.

Amanda looked around the store once again and then answered quietly, “I’m not sure.  I haven’t seen them since I went to try on the robes.  I can’t see them leaving the store without letting us know.  But, since Claire’s mum works here, she’s allowed to go into the back rooms.  That’s probably where they are.”

“They should be back soon.  Did you find anything you liked?”

Athene shrugged.  "Not really, just window shopping.  Besides, don't need anything new yet.  Probably next year when I have to get new school robes." She had a plan to keep to after all.  She knew down to the Knut how much money was in her school fund that Bones had given her and how much she could expect to earn each summer.  Aging out wasn't going to catch her unprepared.

Glad to have a chance to waunder around with the others as they all flooded down the pathway into hogsmeade before the crowds began breaking off to go visit which every building had attracted their eyes.

He pointed to the others with him towards the post office and held up a letter, "
going to drop off a letter then i think i will swing by the three broomsticks and look over the new brooms and read up on how fast they are."
Heading down the path he stops and pays for a owl letter to his parents describing all the effort being made by the aurors to protect them from the escaped prisoners.

For several seconds, James was more focused on how Claire's hand felt that where they were going or what she was saying. It was soft and warm and felt nice. There was something about her mum and then it got suddenly a bit darker and he looked around. Where they in the backroom? He glanced at her hand and his heart did a silly flip before he heard her ask the second question.

"Right way...?"

He glanced around and realized they were right about where the face had been and he suddenly caught up. He did not retrieve his hand though. Instead, he bit his lip, worried about if they should REALLY be back here, and then nodded, "Yeah, they were right here, uhmm, right there exactly. I didn't see which way they ran though, they left while I was getting your attention."

He surreptitiously put the scarf back in his pocket.

Amanda nodded, “I don’t really need anything else either.  But, it can be fun to look.  Give me a minute to get changed back and we’ll see if we can find the others.”  While, in addition to the dress robe, Amanda had noticed a few cute accessories, she’d already decided that she’d rather save her spending money for Tomes and Scrolls, Honeydukes, and Weaseleys' Wizard Wheezes.

After giving Athene a chance to respond, Amanda headed back to the changing area.  After putting her own outfit back on, she returned the clothing she’d been trying on to the racks where she’d found them.

"Sounds like a deal."  Athene said with a smile.  The smile slid off her face as soon as Amanda was gone.  As much as she was happy for Claire, James and Robert, she couldn't help but also feel put out by their pairing up already.  After all, it did seem a bit premature of them.  At Howley's she had seen the same sort of things happening, but usually to the fifteen year olds.  At the rate things were going she was going to be the last to find someone to make kissy-faces with; she couldn't see Amanda having any trouble finding a boyfriend.  Maybe it was better that way.  Who needs to try and impress some guy anyways?

She continued to wander around the store as she mused darkly.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
The feel of Corina's hand in his and the faint smell of her shampoo was very nice and somehow felt right. He had to hope that any Auror who was following him would be descret and keep their distance, though after the train ride he was not convinced these aurors would be that nice.

He went along as they did the regular spots for a butterbeer but he found the taste too strange to be comfortable with and only had a single glass. He did enjoy the mischief house of the wheasly brothers funny but again he felt that none of what was there interested him, at least when the auror was standing nearby keeping an eye out for trouble. He looked around to see if any off his friends were in the store and sighed.

Later he did find time to talk with Corina alone about what she had done over the vacation and about her parents and what they were like. He did talk a little about his friends and they might need to set up a picnic with everyone when the weather turned to spring and warmed up.

James peered around the back room like a curious kid, because he was. He had never been to the back of a store before. Then the fact that he was alone in the dark with Claire occurred and he blushed, glad it was hidden. Of course, his thoughts didn't manage to conjure up anything specific beyond that their parents, even his and definitely hers, would probably not approve.

He caught himself and looked at the door then shrugged, "Well, as long as there is no alarm... they'd have set that off if there was, right?"

There is a magical alarm on the back door.

Corina talked pleasantly about her summer, mostly spent in Devon with her parents but with a vacation to France and relatives, as well as her parents with Robert, though she noticed him looking around. She didn't get jealous though, she knew that he was mates with James and didn't begrudge him that. She was less thrilled when he hung out with Amanda and Athene, but she felt she had to be somewhat reasonable.

She loved the idea of a picnic... with her friends and his.

James hastily copied Claire's action and pointed his glowing wand into corners as well. He saw nothing but kept lloking because he had definitely seen someone come back here and he didn't want to let Claire down. Surely that someone was around. James even began to move things about haphazardly before giving Claire a sheepish look and searching a bit more carefully.

He was about to admit that he was maybe seeing things when a voice suddenly cracked into the, "And what, by Merlin's ghost, are you two doing back here?"

James did his best impersonation of a deer caught in la p lights as Claire's mum entered the room.

Nearby, the girls had the sudden, brilliant idea to take their men dress shopping and gladly skipped toward gladrags. On the plus side, Dillon and Randall were alright chaps and sympathized with Robert over the predicament.

Claire jumped and turned beet red. Although at this point she was pretty sure there was no one back here, she was really glad she wasn't standing right next to James.  "Two things.  James thought he saw some one come back here, that didn't look like they worked here. But I guess they didn't, and last time my piecework was on the shelf there, I said that, when we passed you at the counter." She glanced one last time around and her voice lowered automatically  "And I wouldn't be stupid enough to do anything else, on a Hogsmeade visit, in your store, with da following me.  I'd never get to come on another Hogsmeade visit and actually go round the village."

The afternoon was going nice as the just waundered some and let some of the pressure of school work ease off and the sense of her persence was very nice even if was of a mind that it might be more fun to be alone with her.

Most of Corrinas friends were ok even if they had a somewhat slanted view of Hufflepuff house. The spent some time checking out the magical gift shop with its whacky items and then some time with the ice cream shop.

"So, Corrina, what are your plans after you graduate?." He asked with a straight face, wondering if he might live close enough to her after they finished Hogwarts and joined the other witch and wizards working out in the wide world.

There was a look that said for her to behave herself... all the time, added as she stepped aside to let the children back out front. SHe did cast a suspicious look around the back room and seemed to stay after they had left.

Out front, Corinna smiles at Athene and waves before turning back to her friends, "After Hogwarts? I want to get into local government in Plymouth, that's near where my family live. Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
Amanda had just finished putting back an old rose top when she heard Mrs. Cowlings scolding James and Claire.  She glanced towards the back of the store, feeling a small surge of sympathy for Claire.  It was never fun to be scolded when your friends could hear, and being scolded in front of a boy you liked had to be even worse.  She was curious about whether or not they’d actually been kissing in the backroom.  But, she decided that unless one of her friends brought it up, she’d should probably just pretend as though she hadn’t heard anything.

Glancing around, she noticed Athene near the front of the store and walked over to wait with her.  Her smile was friendly as she noticed Robert and his new friends.  But since Corinna and Robert appeared to be right in the middle of a conversation, she simply waved.

Unfamiliar with the celebrities that Athene was referencing, Amanda looked blank for just a moment.  But, she recognized the term “portmanteau” from their Magical Langauges class and the suggestions that Athene offered provided the final hint she needed.  “I prefer Robinna.”

Amanda greeted Claire’s arrival with a welcoming smile, “It’s a game where you combine the names of two people.  For example, you and James would be Jaire or Claimes.”  She frowned slightly as she realized what else Claire had said.  “Do you think someone was trying to take something?”  It didn’t seem likely that someone would want to steal fabric or unfinished clothing; but some of the higher end fabrics and accessories might be valuable.

She made a face at the description of the game, and frowned when Amanda combined hers and James names.  "That's just rude,  Who does that?" Then turned her attention back to the back room issue. "James thought they were staring at us.  I didn't see them, but he said they went in the back room, I can go back there, I work here, so we went and looked."  She paused a few seconds, mulling over how that sounded, deciding that someone besides Mum and Da, who were naturally suspicious, might actually get suspicious too,  then added. "We didn't do anything that suggested any other reason for going back there, so Mum believed us too.   Did either of you find something you wanted to buy?"

James came along behind Claire and caught the tail end f teh name game explanation and the combination of his name and Claire's. He was about to suggest which one he liked when she declared it rude. His jaw snapped shut with a click and he smiled away his momentary private embarrassment.

He saw that the girls were moving toward talk of shopping gain and he glanced around as they did. Seeing Robert, he waved and grinned. He knew they were two boys a year or two ahead of their class when it came to girls,James thought his mother had been a bad influence there, and gave his buddy a "hang ten," a move he had learned in California.

Returning to the girls, "Whatever you buy, you're carrying it yourself, none of that stuff I see on the tele, here?" He grinned to show he was kiding, ""How about something to eat next, yeah? I could devour a horse!"

Amanda didn’t agree with Claire’s assessment of the name game.  It was just playing with words, nothing insulting or cruel.  But, it certainly didn’t seem worth arguing about.

“I found an absolutely beautiful set of dress robes, or rather Athene found them for me.  But, I’m just going to put them on my Christmas list.” She grinned at James’ comment, “I’m planning to buy a few things today and I promised to pick up some stuff for Kiri and Lloyd.  But don’t worry, I’m sure that I can manage to carry it.”

“The Tea Shop has a really good spinach and strawberry salad,”
Amanda recommended.  “But, either one would be good.”

Although she hadn’t said so aloud, she was a bit concerned about the fact that someone might have been watching James and Claire.  While she hoped that it was nothing, she decided it would be wise to be a bit more alert for the rest of their trip.

Red and black: that is what James ran smack into as he tried to rush into the Broomsticks. He bounced off of the bright red robes of High Auror Ronald Weasley and sat down in the dirt and snow with an audible "Oof!"

Beside the High Auror was the zone of negative black space that was Headmaster Snape. He glared down at James and then looked to the Auror, who was also glaring. It was hard to tell which was scarier and both were doing their best to make James do his best impersonation of a turtle.

The gazes then raised to the girls and the High Auror spent a good amount of time looking at both Athen and Claire before nodding to Snape and striding off. Snape then glanced at the children, "Watch your steps, Mr Evans, have a nice day, children" and strode off himself.

The group was left in a dead stop.

The sound of James muttering to himself caught his attention as well as the sound of him hitting the floor. He looked over intending to make a remark to James but instead his blood felt cold as he caught sight of not only Headmaster Snape but for some reason the high Auror was there as well.

He stood and checked to make sure his girl friend was aware of what had just been noticed by the rest of them. Sighing softly he nods to the Headmaster but the rememberence of the house elf and how the High Auror went after the small being still bothered him and for some reason he was not as much in awe of the man as he should be.

"Head Master, i see you have company, i am sure we will see each other at school later". He was not sure if he was being smart or just being cautious but he wanted to show the high Auror that this american was afraid (to Much) of him even if he would show respect for the office.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
James accepted the hand up and tried to hide his cheery red ears and neck. He was flushed with embarrassment though and hung his head, mumbling apologies, as the red robed wizard stalked off followed by his guardian. "That's going to make for an awkward Christmas, yeah?"

He then smiled at his companions and moved toward the Three Broomsticks and the promised drink and chips, which all sounded fabulous. He hoped that Robert and his bunch made it, too.

Once at the pub, the group was lead to a small booth in the back and they piled in, giving orders as they did so to Mrs. Thomas and then turning to the girls, "So, what else is on the agenda for the day? Visiting relations or whatnot?"

He noted that Claire's Da was now seated across the room with one of the aurors, the really scary one.

Crowded into the booth with the others, Claire asked. "Amanda, Athena, you want to go to your house or the orphanage?  Grandmum might be home, but there's a chance she'll see a group of kids and put us to work."  She lowered her voice.  "I know Da will."

Making a face, Athene replied "Ugh!  No thanks.  Today is our day off, not to work.  I say we hit Honeyduke's and the other shops."

OOC: I think Robert and the others were going to join us later, so they aren't here right now.  I think.

Claire kept her voice deliberately low.  "Well, my house is on the way back, we can stop for a few minutes on the way back, enough time to say hello, not enough for chores.  I've got a feeling there's going to be trouble either way.  But not till next time, at least."

She glanced about, then kept her voice low.

"We've got to figure out KIri's thing, we haven;t had a chance to do anything, what with the aurors about and everything, but anyone have any ideas.  I think there's more in the castle.  Have either of you tried the bathroom again? James, is there any way you can find out what the headmaster did with it?" She looked at Athena and James.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
After placing an order for a mug of butterbeer and an appetizer of chips, Amanda slid into the booth.  “Visiting our families after we’re done shopping sounds like a good idea.  As I mentioned earlier, Mrs. Jones said she’d be backing a fresh batch of oatmeal cookies for us to share.”

As the conversation moved to more sensitive topics her voice lowered, “I really haven’t had much time to research Kiri’s question or to do much exploring.”  Honestly, she hadn’t given it much thought since she’d come back.  Part of her continued to hope that this year they could leave things in the Aurors' hands and simply focus on their school work and extracurricular activities.  “Considering how the Headmaster got into the passage, I doubt the opening still works the way it did before.  But, it might be wise to check.”  She frowned thoughtfully, “If there are other portions of the castle that can be accessed the same way, it might be a good idea for the rest of us to try to learn a couple of words.  If nothing else, we could try writing them down, like in that letter.”  She glanced to Athene and her voice dropped even lower as she asked, “Did you ever hear anything else the author of that letter?”

James blanched as he slid into the booth then looked at the others, he ordered a butterbeer and some scotch eggs then whispered to the group, "I made the serious mistake of asking Mr. Snape about the snake, I said I was worried about my friends' safety. He didn't buy it, of course, he's a shrewd dude. HE said it was in the safest place possible and I should not worry my deliquent head about it. Then, he gave me a HUGE summer reading list." James blanched a bit more.

"When I got back from visiting Robert, I had to read the whole History of Magic text book." He turned a bit green then but brightened when the waitress came back with their orders. He was about to dig in, dunking his nugget of fried cholesterol into a pool of some spicy sauce when he looked at Claire, paused, then offered her one.

Athen winched as James told them about what happened after he asked about the snake before turning to Amanda.  "I haven't heard from our letter writer at all.  As to the passageway, I highly suspect that's been sealed up, but I can have Mehen double check it later." She dropped her voice low fo the second half of that sentence and made sure her face was turned away from the auror and Mr. Cowlings.  "As for the snake, I'd feel safer if it was dead and chopped up into a thousand pieces."

While he has a few seconds alone with his new girl friend he talks about her coming along with him to meet his friends and have something to eat. He had talked up the group and filled in some of the truth about the stories floating around.

He really wanted a soft form of the truth to attempt to turn the mistakes and half truths that he had heard from other students about what had happened with Prof LeStrange and why the Aurors were hanging around his friends and himself.

Amanda gave James a sympathetic look as he mentioned the Headmaster’s reaction.  Reading didn’t seem like a particularly harsh punishment.  But, much like Professor Binns, the History of Magic textbooks tended to make even the most interesting historical events seem dull.

She nodded in agreement with her friends comments about the snake, “So would I. Hopefully, Headmaster Snape meant that the snake’s dead body was somewhere safe.”  She looked thoughtful as she pushed her plate of chips towards the center of the table for everyone to share and then continued, “If not, maybe there’s some reason why it can’t be destroyed?  If Lloyd was right about Voldemort’s spirit being inside the snake, killing it might free him or let him posses something else.”

Claire considered. "I suppose.  She killed him, so if that was the case, would it have gone to the snake right after he died, or would he have done something ahead of time, to like store part of it, just in case?"    She took a piece of egg and chewed thoughtfully. "The ritual, down in the room, BSC was trying to make a body, right. Killing the snake would have to be done with the ritual for it to work, you would think."  She frowned.  "I wish everything made sense."

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
After finishing a bite of scotch egg, Amanda nodded in agreement with Claire, continuing to speak quietly.  “I doubt that any of his followers would have even considered that someone muggleborn or muggleraised would meet the criteria for the ritual.  If they believed that the bloodline had died out, they might have even assumed that the ritual was useless.”

She frowned thoughtfully, “It doesn’t seem like Professor Lestrange was testing the students each year.  Otherwise, you would have had the nightmares during your first year as well.  So, either she had just discovered the ritual or, somehow, they realized that someone Hogwarts might work.”

“Maybe the individuals you heard whispering during our first year gossiped about your ability and he overheard.”
Amanda wasn’t sure that she needed to be quite so cryptic, but she didn’t want to be the one guilty of accidently revealing Athene’s secrets if someone overheard part of their conversation.

She considered for a moment as she ate another chip, “What did Kiri say last year when she was telling us about what she’d read?”  Her frown deepened as she tried to remember, “He had used objects to make himself safe: the snake, a goblet, some things that had already been dealt with.  Maybe he prepared them so that he could possess them.”  She took a sip of her drink, “Though, it wouldn’t be very useful to possess a goblet.”

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
James was eating his bites of scotch egg and listening carefully,n but a lot of the speculation was way over his head. He got the gist of some of the things being said, someone had found out something about Athene and then tried to perform the ritual last year, the one he had thwarted. He thought it made sense that they had never even considered that an Athene had existed, wizards really tried very hard to ignore muggles.

He was thoughtfully chewing another bite of the very tasty eggs when he had an idea, "Perhaps it was the nightmares that tipped them off actually. MAybe they were just hiding the snake... you know, they;d had it all along and were moving ti about to keep the Lady from finding it? I got no idea about this possessing stuff."

James was a bit uncomfortable with his speculations, he generally preferred to let the girls do that, and smiled at Claire then Robert. He thought they were all being very smart, but he'd rather just enjoy the day. He supposed it was in response to the problem at the store. He sipped his butterbeer and thought through a few more things. He was just about to comment again when a head stuck itself into the bar and announced the return line up in an hour.

James looked at the girls and made the quick suggestion, "the Weasley shop?"

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
Amanda had a slight advantage over Claire, since she had simply been sipping her drink and listening to James and Claire when Corinna approached.  So, it was a simple matter to just pick up the more innocent thread of the conversation.  “The Weasley shop sounds good.  Although, I need to make a quick stop at Honeydukes as well, both Kiri and Lloyd had candy on their list and I’m almost out of sugar quills.”  Since they only had an hour left, she had a feeling the bookstore would have to wait for the next Hogsmeade weekend.  “We’re going to have to hurry if we’re going to visit both stores and our parents before going back.”

She smiled as Corinna and James reached the table, and if she was feeling nervous or guilty only the faintest of hints about it could be seen on her face.  “Hi Robert, Corinna.  We were just finishing up here and planning to head to the Weasley shop and Honeydukes.  If you haven’t already been there, would you care to join us?”

Enjoying the time to once again get to know about what she had been doing over the holidays and also the time to judge that sense of rightness with each other. He had wondered how the holidays would go while they were apart but was smart enough to know they would have to work at making that warm fun feeling of being close again.

He had meet the friends and could make the cross over to how she felt about his close friends. He knew that his friends would most likely be friends for life but he was not there with any of her friends yet.

A small frown crossed his face as the got to the table to enjoy a drink or something else only to be told that they were just leaving. He lifted an eyebrow at Amanda and James. "Well, if we finish our drinks and still have time then we will see if there are any new books for us."

He knew his friends well enough to sense the nervousness that jumped thru Amanda and Claire when they arrived but at the moment was not inclinded to ease that nervousness for them.

Moving over to a table that was empty he found a couple of chairs and sit down with Corinna and crew.

Amanda was slightly disappointed that the timing had worked out so badly with Robert and C Corinna.  There had seemed like there would be so much time when they were heading to Hogsmeade.  But, now there was only an hour left and so many places left to visit.  If there had been just a little more time, she would have suggested lingering for one more drink with Robert and his new friends.  But, instead, she nodded in agreement with Claire’s suggestion.  “That sounds good.”

After saying to the departing Robert and Corinna, “I guess we’ll see you back at Hogwarts, then.  Enjoy your drink and trip to the book store,”  Amanda left a tip on the table and headed out with her friends.

She frowned thoughtfully at Claire’s question, “I don’t remember ever reading anything like that in a non-fiction book or even a novel.  But, I’ve never heard anything that said it couldn’t be done either.”

As the troop was exiting the inn, the cold air hit them, then someone literally rammed into Claire. The wind had just come up and thrown cold into everyone's eyes, making them water and squint a bit white making their necks small inside their coats. That was when a stranger in dark, ratty looking clothes bumped into Claire hard.

They felt like a piece of stone wrapped in hoarfrost, all hardness and angles ad chill, then he was gone and she had a shocked bum and she sat on the hard ground.

James was there almost instantly offering a hand and glaring toward... empty air? In the moment everyone had focused on the now reclining Claire, the stranger had disappeared without so much as a mumbled, unfeeling apology.

If someone wishes to try not to get distracted by Claire falling, they may make a Fortitude roll DC 10. Robert, you and your group were coming out just then as well, you can make the same roll at a DC 9, since you were a bit more distant from the immediate effect of the exchange.

"I'm fine."  She glanced around, but didn't see the person, it took her a second to parse the meaning of truck in the sentence. "Let's get out of the crowd." Claire's Da was there is another second and was brushing away her friends to grab her shoulder and inspect Claire's state. His hand on her shoulder was a bit firm but his eyes were filled with concern of the type she was used to from him, more duty than warmth but done willingly. The auror was nowhere to be seen.

After a few moments, the group was allowed to go on their way, the accident being chalked up to nothing more than that, an accident. Their last hour was spent on a blitz of shopping and ended at the Davis residence, where Amanda's parents insisted on biscuits and tea for everyone. The biscuits had orange marmalade served with them and were almond flavored. The tea was a good black tea.

James sat quietly at the table, his few personal purchases secreted in pockets and chatted pleasantly with the others.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
Despite their hurried dashes through the various shops, Athene both enjoyed herself immensely and kept a careful eye out for anyone following them.  While it could have just been some random witch or wizard that had knocked Claire down, Athene wasn't at all a trusting individual.

She almost asked if anyone saw if the person had an umbrella with them before realizing that none of them save for maybe Robert would even catch the reference to the cold war murder that had happened way back in the 70s.  Besides, Claire had been knocked down, and not simply jabbed with something.  Still she did whisper to Claire when out of earshot of her Da, "You didn't get hurt anywhere while you were knocked down, did you?"

At Amada's, she politely drank her tea and munched on the almond biscuits; which were very tasty while happily nattering on about school and classes.  She didn't bring up the incident while Amanda's parents were anywhere near but did bring up the subject of the Career Day idea that she and Amanda were working on.  If they could get enough parents behind the idea, it would make it easier to sell the idea to the Headmaster and the Board of Governors of Hogwarts.  Having the Davis' firmly on board would make things easier.

Re: Hogsmeade - October 2020
Amanda frowned thoughtfully as she glanced in the direction where the stranger had disappeared.  There had been something vaguely familiar about the man, but she couldn’t place him or imagine where she would have met someone quite that unkempt.   Deciding that if it was important she’d probably remember it later, she turned her attention back to her friends.  After all, the most important thing was making sure that Claire was alright.

However, as they walked towards Weasley’s, she did think to mention quietly to Claire.  “You might want to check and make sure that you still have your money and your wand.  Athene once warned me that sometimes people deliberately bump into you as a distraction for picking your pockets.”   Even though she was fairly certain that no one had been particularly close to her when her attention had been on Claire's accident, she quickly confirmed that all of her own things were still in place.

Amanda was carrying several bags by the time that they reached her parents house.  In addition to the things Kiri and Lloyd had requested, she had picked up a few treats for herself including three new daydream charms and a couple of types of candy.

She contentedly sipped her tea and ate the almond biscuits while chatting with her friends and family.  She eagerly joined in when Athene brought up the subject of the Career Day, helping detail out what they’d done with it so far and mentioning that they had discussed the idea with Professor Aquila.

The end of Christmas Vacation--Year 3.  Amanda's Room
That afternoon, once everyone had arrived, Amanda took them up to her bedroom to talk.  “We’ll have to leave the door open.  But, we shouldn’t have to worry about being interrupted.  Mom is at work, Dad has been spending most of his time in the study or the greenhouse, and Mrs. Jones is busy cooking dinner.”

Amanda’s room was decorated in shades of blue.  Her walls were painted a light blue grey and the carpet was a slightly darker shade of that hue.  Her bedspread and a comfortable overstuffed chair were a brighter Persian blue.   One wall was lined with bookshelves and her desk.   A few of the shelves held a collection of porcelain dolls dressed in historical and regional costumes.  But, most of the shelves held books:  fiction, non-fiction, and her journals.  There was a small sitting area in one corner consisting of an overstuffed chair, a good light, and a small end table holding a novel titled, “The Dark Mirror.”  There was also the typical furniture:  a bed, a nightstand holding a clock, a dresser with a jewelry box and a few other small items resting on it, a large wooden chest, and a perch for those times that her familiar was in her bedroom rather than the owlry.  There were no posters hanging on the walls.  But there were two paintings.  One was a landscape showing a cozy flower garden and a few decorative ruins.  The other showed the image of a sleeping girl holding a book of fairy tales while images from those stories played out in her dreams overhead.   Her stuffed pegasus had been hidden in the closet.  It was one thing for Claire and Athene to see it.  It was entirely another thing for Robert and James to do so.

Amanda took a seat in the chair at her desk and motioned for the others to sit wherever they’d like.  “So have your vacations been as eventful as mine has been?”

Re: The end of Christmas Vacation--Year 3.  Amanda's Room
“I’ve been considering what Aurors Thrussington and Scrub could have been looking for and can’t come up with many other options.

They weren’t acting like they were searching the house because they thought the Lestranges had done something to endanger me or my parents.  It felt more like they thought we had something we shouldn’t.

The journal and Athene’s familiar are the only possessions that we might get into trouble for having.  And, I doubt the aurors would be looking for Mehen here, or at all really.

But, they probably do care about the journal.  Head Auror Weasley, himself, was chasing the house elf and the goblins who had it.  If Headmaster Snape turned the elf over to the aurors for questioning, she could have told them that she’d hidden the journal with us.   Or, they could just be looking at everyone who was in the ice cream parlor and who doesn’t have diplomatic immunity.”

Re: The end of Christmas Vacation--Year 3.  Amanda's Room
James sat a little awed in the overstuffed chair and flipped open the cover of the novel while he listened. He felt a bit overwhelmed by being in a girl's room, but the door was open and her dad was in the area, so it wasn't bad, right? Still, a bit of a flush was creeping up his neck and he shifted more than once as the conversation rolled on, "Well, no one searched Snape's house. I am not sure anyone has stones that big. Sucks about your Da though Amanda. Whatcha think they want with Hermione's Journal? Is there anymore in it Kiri than we discovered last year?"

He shifted again in discomfort in one of the most comfy chairs ever.

You obviously didn't get to see the Dec. 24th edition of the Daily Prophet then.  An ex-Obliviator claimed to have the removed memories that proved that Rodolphus Lestrange didn't kill Claire's mother.  They also make some nasty remarks about how Lady Red ordered several people to be obliviated including Maggie Parker."  Athene explained.  "The very next day, virtually every copy was confiscated and a retraction was printed.  And of course all of our residences were searched high and low.  They tried to trump up charges of theft against Maggie and got Amanda's dad fired.  So yeah, they're doing a great job of making us feel safe."

"Mums different since the paper came out.  Just different. ".  She dropped her voice low.  "I got a,glass ball filled with smoke, but da hid it and I don't know where. "   Mum had walked her over and said she was going to talk to the housekeeper and then head over to the shop for a bit, she would be back to get her.

Claire appeared nervous.  Her hair was braided tightly into two braids, but she had touched the edges so much in her fidgeting that her face was framed by all the little frizzy hairs that had worked their way out

Re: The end of Christmas Vacation--Year 3.  Amanda's Room
Amanda frowned thoughtfully, “I think I remember reading something…”  She walked over to one of her bookshelves and removed one of the books from her Guides for Young Witches and Wizards collection.  As she flipped through the book, she said sympathetically, “All of this must be really hard for your Mum:  learning that she was forced to forget significant events in her life, not to mention the whole thing about your Da.”  A small part of Amanda wondered if everyone might have been better off, or at least happier, if the article had never been published.  “Your Mum is really strong and smart though.  I’m sure that she’ll find a way to deal with everything,” she added encouragingly.

“There it is…”  She brought the book, How Things Work, over to Claire.  It was open to the section on pensives and include a picture of the removed memories.  “Did the smoke in the glass ball look something like this?  The obliviator that wrote the letter to the editor said that she had the memories that that proved Rodolphus Lestrange didn’t kill your mother.  Maybe she sent them to you.  Maybe that is what the aurors were looking for.”

Re: The end of Christmas Vacation--Year 3.  Amanda's Room
Amanda agreed, “Since Mr. Lestrange was a member of Voldemort's cabinet, I’m sure they could have found quite a few ways to convict him.  They may have taken advantage of the obliviations, but I doubt it was the primary reason.  Claire’s mother and Mum probably learned something the government wanted to keep quiet while they were members of The Order of the Phoenix.  Didn’t Nik say that Claire's mother witnessed the final duel between Lady Red and Voldemort?  It probably related to that final battle.”

“As for Ovidian, I’m not familiar with the name.  Can you guess, based on the clothing and background, how long ago the picture was taken?”

OCC:  I’m not entirely sure exactly what Nik told us on the train.  According to his vacation post:

“On the train home he spent time with the older students who had been deemed the "breakfast club" , while he was not sure what the term meant he was fairly sure that they got that title because of the habit of getting into trouble at some point during the school year. Still he spent time talking about the last war and how there was so few accurate recordings of what went on during that carnage. He had a few names to chase down of those still alive who had been there and were not at this moment employed or a fanatical follower of the Red Lady.”

If he didn’t mention the part about Charlene Parker witnessing the final duel, let me know and I’ll edit.

OOc: copy of what he told on the train.

The power and presence of Prof Le Fey almost had him running away but that would most likely be a horrid situation when he had to take her classes later next year, not to mention what she might think of him.

He managed to find his chair and wait out the grading of papers until she had finished the furious paperwork. When she spoke again he was almost lost in the power of her projected power and the requirements to be specific.

"Professor, i will do research on my name but to my knowledge my side of the family has no great claim to any fame or fortune or heroics.
Thank you again for your time. I guess what i am researching is the war with Voldemort. In all the books i have read, the brave and famous Lady Red killed Voldemort in a duel. Still when i try to find accurate resources that i can check out to read detailed reports i am not find but a bare few and they ...seem to be barely warm on what they have to offer. I am not the one to question but there seems to be some wavering on details i have for the older folk who did fight during those days."

Re: Magical Languages

LE Fey's expression grew distant and cold as she waited for Nik to end his question. By he was done, she looked like a thunder cloud about to rain on someone's parade. Then, suddenly, she exhaled and her shoulders fell, "Very very few people have the sack to ask me about the wars, Mr. Androus. It isn't that your name belonged to any especially potent wizards. It simply means "like a man." Since you seem so determined to live up to that name. I will tell you something. After Voldemort took over, his asperation became global. The other wizarding nations unified to fight him, but most of them were fighting a losing battle. Well, except the Americans, but they had... that's for another time. The other forces that were fighting Voldemort were the Order of the Phoenix, guerrillas and rebels. They took in the remnants of the old ministry, muggle borns, even a few muggles. You might be surprised how many dark wizards died to a magically augmented AR-14. I led that unit. We fought mainly down in Cardiff."

Le Fey sighed heavily and shifted in her seat, "The forces of Lady Red came out of nowhere. A mob of Irish wizards, weren't they? Came in through Wales. I hooked up with her early. Oh, she was dark; dark as they come." Le Fey shuddered and looked distant for a bit. It was a while before she spoke again, "Plenty of us linked up with her before the end. A few refused and stayed hidden, Aberforth for one... and Maggie, but we were all there at the Battle of London. Nobody wrote about it though, no one would dare, except maybe Maggie."

She smiled, "I didn't see the final duel, Mr. Androus, but I know who did. Ron Weasely, Draco Malfoy, Bellatrix Lestrange, Peter Pettigrew, Fenrir Greyback, Francis Drake, an old vampire, and Charlene Parker. Only I know about the last one though." Le Fey didn't think it needed saying that the Red Lady and Voldemort were there, too. She looked at Nik, "Almost all of those people are dead... guess who isn't?"

With a flourish he writes down the names of those that professor Le Fey knew and would admit to knowing about the recent wars. He stopped to consider who she might mean. It was obvious that Lady Red and Ronald Weasley were still alive, as was Draco Malfoy. That did not leave many of those who fought against the dark wizard and lived.

He let his eyes open wider for a few seconds as he considered. "Some are alive and some are said to be alive still, but since i have not seen them or heard about them from the papers then they are questionable. Off hand i might offer Professor, you may mean either the woman you call Maggie or Ms Parker. I know that the papers said the high auror Weasley was involved with something a couple of years ago, something about a house elf?."

However, not even I have the spine to challenge those two men. They are very very dangerous Mr. Androus; I would advise not bringing up the topic with them. Is there anything else about the wars?

Amanda nodded thoughtfully in response to Kiri’s statement, jotting the name and probable date down on a piece of paper.  “You’re right.  If he did play a significant role, we should be able to find something about him in the library.  Ovidian isn’t a particularly common name after all.   There is a logbook that contains the names, classes, grades, OWLs, NEWTs, and initial career, of all of the students that attended Hogwarts.”  Amanda had learned about it when trying to find information on Maggie Parker.  “But, I think we’d have to ask Madame Travers’ to see it, and she’d want to know why.  What made you think that the picture was significant?  Was there a note with it?  Or was its appearance in your Christmas box considered a mystery?”

Amanda’s expression was sympathetic when she responded to Claire.  “Of course you want to know.  Anyone would.  The article implied that your mother was part of the Order of the Phoenix.  Maybe some of the other former members would know something.”  Of course, Amanda was less certain whether they’d be willing to share that information.

The Summer after 3rd year
It was June 7th and Athene was meant to believe it was pure happenstance that Witch Hanley had sent her and two of the younger students down to Gladrags to pick up some parcels of donated clothing. Oh, sure, it was a pretty normal duty and Athene did it often enough, but the furtive glances of the youngsters and the way they dragged their feet said it all. Granted, again, the youngsters always dragged their feet on these errands, but the character of it was all wrong. That was pure boredom and lollygagging; this was deliberately trying to go slow to keep her ou of the orphanage. She could just imagine the surprise party they were trying to throw her to make her feel better about the Willow incident and having to work, which the younger kids unanimously agreed was awful.

They were just passing Honeydukes and the lair were delaying again by talking about how much they liked Butterbeer and if Athene liked it with very smarmy knowing grins on their faces. There were a few perks to being in the smaller, better funded wizarding orphanage apparently. Just as they were passing though, Rolf MacNair stepped out into the path and sood poking at the dirt with his boot toe and looking extremely uncomfortable. The kids hid behind Athene's proverbial skirts at the sight of the town bully and looked nervously for Tomas anywhere. "Uhm, hey, uhmm... Athene, um" even the kids winced at his on ious pain now and looked up at Athene with wondering eyes like she had tamed a Wyvern or something. The boy continued, "Uhmm, yeah, so I wanted to say, ermm, you know..." He glanced around quickly and whispered, "Happy Birthday! And that I uhmm would really like to talk to you, um privately? I mean, if you want to. I know I was a real cad..."

The kids piped in suddenly with "was!?" In a reverberating chorus. Rolf spooked and ran, calling back "Sorry!" The kids laughed and dragged Athene on the errand. There were three parcels of donated clothes and no further sight of Rolf that day. They got back to the orphanage where decorations were waiting along with a small stein of butterbeer for everyone in honor of Athene, donated by Mr. Dervish himself or so Witch Hanley said. The cucumber sandwiches were the orphanage standard and the cake with the obvious signs of frosting removed and redone to say "Happy Birfday Athene!" By one of the kids was Mr. Banges.

It was not the last stuttering, rambling appearance of Rolf though. The next day a birthday card for Athene arrived in the mail with no return and no name but the scrawled lines, in very neat and labored but pretty penmanship, "I really want to dance with you again."

Athene did her best not to smirk at Rolf's attempt to talk to her during her "errand" but couldn't help it when he took off after the kids' exclaimed "Was!?".  Still he hadn't been causing as much trouble this past year.  For that matter neither was Lysandra.

When the card arrived the next day, Athene gave it some serious consideration.  Since she knew where Macnair lived, she headed off towards that side of the village after she finished her morning hours at the shop.  She figured she could run into him without too much trouble.

Rolf's dad lived on the edge of the Black Forest in the Groundskeeper's hut and that was where Rolf lived during the summer when he was not amongst the village buildings terrorizing orphans. True, he had not been amongst those buildings as often as Tomas Carrow of late, but he was still the town's official bully.

The late morning air was a bit warm and humid for Scotland but pleasant as Athene came around a bend in the road, passing beneath the Hogwarts gates, and came into sight of the hut. Rolf was outside in his shirt sleeves tending the MacNair's garden. Athene recalled that Herbology was one of the classes Rolf did exceptionally well in.

When he looked up and saw her though, he had the funniest look of panic and dashed for the hut, slamming the door closed.

At the Cowlings house, as Summer vacation settles in, one thing remains the same as it always has. Piecework was waiting for Claire as soon as she set through the door. No one spoke of the distance that was felt or the events of that February, but Claire's fear of being officially cooped up in the house was not born out. Instead, it was apparent that her Mum and Da meant to keep her so busy as to give her no time to be in trouble. She is given loads of piece work, plenty of household chores, and her Mum began to step up her training in herblore and midwifery. It is even mentioned that she might Time was given for her to spend with Cynthia, Athene, and Amanda if she wanted, but not much.k a few hours a week at Gladrags. Claire did receive, unmolested, her letters from Amanda while she was on vacation and even a letter from James asking if he could swing by when he was up visiting the castle as he was interning with Professor Prewett this summer, Mr. Snape had insisted.  James also mentioned Claire asking her parents if she could help him with a "special assignment" coming up in early August at Hogwarts. He was suppose to escort some people around Hogsmeade.

A few minute later Rolf reappeared, but not before Athene noted the curtains moving about a dozen times in various rooms of the house. When eh did come out he was wearing a shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a pair of pants rolled to the calf. He smiled with all the false bravado a fourteen year old boy could muster and walked over in away that Cynthia licked calling "rooster strutting" when the older boys in Hogsmeade did it. "Uhm, Hey..." It was a false start and he straightened up and began again, "Hello, Athene, what brings you a-by.." The stumble was almsot as hilarious as the false high diction he was putting on. Rolf normally talked in a rough burr of an accent and his words were always on the simple side of vocabulary.

He smiled at her and toed the dirt a bit then visibly mustered his courage, "Athene, do you want to dance sometime, I really liked that..."

Re: The Summer after 3rd year
Now it was Athene's turn to be surprised.  She always knew that Lysandra was acting the way she did because of how she was raised.  Probably the same for Rolf to be perfectly honest.  She had been trying to reinforce positive behavior with the Slytherin girl this year.  Maybe it was paying off?  But from the sounds of it, Lysandra's grandmother might aggravate things. And an aggravated Lysandra would be bad for Claire.

But first things first...

"I've been meaning to ask you about that.  Why did you pick me to ask to dance at the Ball?  Not that I minded or anything.  It was kind of fun teaching you how to dance to a Cyndi Lauper song."

Rolf blinked and stammered a bit, "I asked because I wanted to. I dunno, Amanda is pretty and all and Claire is too, but I just never wanted to ask them or anything, Why and whose Sindy Lhopper?"

Re: The Summer after 3rd year
"Cyndi Lauper is an American solo artist who first made the song famous way way back in the 80's.  The song is the anthem of teenage girls everywhere and every few years another group or artist will release their own cover of the song.  It's got a great dance beat and it's just fun." Athene explained.  She thought about it for a bit an realized that Rolf seemed to like people who were confident.

After talking with him for a bit, she convinces him to meet with her at an out of the way spot twice a week so she can teach him how to dance.  She did put a caveat on it however.  He had to stop participating in the bullying.  He didn't have to stop others from bullying, but he had to walk away from the situation if they started something.  In return she promised to be polite to Lysandra and Regulus when they weren't causing any problems.

Re: The Summer after 3rd year
AN End to these things...

Rolf took to the bi-weekly sessions like a duck to water. The only problem was that he would not admit that he liked it. he still insisted dancing was something shameful and he adamantly refused to be outed. That said, he even came to a session in late July wit a very ratty looking book checked out from a library years ago and asked about the dances within. It was apparently a dancing guide and Rolf refused to say who had checked it out/stolen it from a muggle library.

More or less, by the end of summer, Rolf was a congenial partner if not a friend. He refused to talk bad about Regulus, Tomas, or Lysandra and brooked no such from Athene either. Athene did manage to learn quite a bit about Lysandra's tyrannical grandmother though. Apparently, the woman was dead set to correct the poor influence of Bellatrix, though her opinions of muggles and such were not far off the deatheater mark.
