Re: The Leaky Cauldron
Shopping and packing done, and Kuari comfortably set up in their room for the night, Amanda and Mrs. Jones sat in the main room of the Leaky Cauldron enjoying their dinner:  cottage pie for Amanda and stew for Mrs. Jones.  As she ate, Amanda chatted with the housekeeper, “I ended up spending most of my allowance on books, a couple of daydream charms (don’t worry, I won’t use them during class), and a few new puzzles and games.  But I still have plenty left for the tea trolley tomorrow.”

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
Arriving after eating her Fish & Chips she comes in to meet her mum with her dad busy but planning to meet them at the station for the train. Her mum giving her a protective charm not good for the really powerful curses but ones that are weak or middling will be good. A nice silver witch on a broom charm its just cute. She orders a cold Ginger Ale to drink.

Putting it on she says ,"Its cute but wouldn't it be kind of low if a witch or wizard would do a curse on a witch that is disabled."

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
James entered the taproom and carefully checked the coins left.  The supply was small, but he thought he ought to have enough for supper and lunch on the train.  He didn't want to hope that his Mr. Snape would give him more tomorrow.

He moved to a table and ordered a meager cold supper and a pumpkin juice.  As he ate, he looked around to see if he knew anyone.

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
After getting back to the cauldron, Val carefully packed the supplies he bought today into his trunk. Some extra stationery, and a delightful quill made of raven feather. After everything was packed neatly, he spent a good thirty minutes sweeping the room and making and remaking his bed. He then went downstairs to meet his grandparents for supper.

Val and his grandparents ate in silence. A delicious meal of quail, potatoes and vegetables. Val particularly enjoyed the gravy, although he was careful not to spill any on his clothes. He saw Amanda, Vwalda and James in the taproom and gave them little waves; before telling his grandparents who they were. Gran and Grandfather Grints nodded in approval when they heard that James was Professor Snape's ward ("lovely man, excellent wizard and the best headmaster Hogwarts has ever seen"), they smiled at the boy and beckoned for him to join them.

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
The Cowlings stopped by the second hand robe shop to get her final set of robes.  She had decided to just skip the new uniforms, they'd have been secondhand anyway, and she had those.  This way she could get a little something from the tea trolley, and Mum and Da would quit worrying.  Then they headed to the Leaky Cauldron, where Da left them to go back to Hogsmeade, with a pointed mention that he had to do her chores now, so she should consider herself lucky and he expected her to do well and learn useful and practical things, like her Mum (and not like her mum) and Grandmum.  If she needed spending money, just write and her Mum would arrange for some piece work for her to do for Gladrags.  She nodded solemnly, hoped she wouldn't need any spending money, and breathed a sigh of relief when he flooed back home.  He was close onto 80, set in his ways, and every once in a while, just a little too dour.

Maggie suggested that they join Amanda and Mrs Jones for dinner, most of the smaller tables were full anyhow.  2 bowls of stew and 2 cups of tea.  "MAy we join you?"

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
As she ate, Amanda noticed a few of the student’s she had been chatting with earlier in the day were also in the taproom and she gave them small waves while telling Mrs. Jones a bit about them.

When Claire and her Mum approached the table, Amanda greeted them with a warm smile.  “Of course, please take a seat.  Good evening Mrs. Cowlings.”

“Did the rest of your shopping go well, Claire?”

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
Vwalda sat reading a book the title is Wizarding Artists Charms and Enchantments, its not a textbook and large.

Vwalda doesn't get all excited its not school here and she is not a student at Hogwarts yet, she does say to the headmaster though ,"Good evening Mister Snape." She is respectful he is older and so is polite in her manner she is just busy on her book lost in a section on animating a drawing with various low end charms.

In reply to Amanda Davis (msg #7):

"Yea, I got a new set of robes, that's all I needed with the history book.  I got the Green Cauldron as my present."

She glanced about the room, recognizing several people from the ice cream shop, although she didn't see Athene, that's right, she wasn't staying.  Maybe she should have offered, but probably the rest of Athene's stuff was back at the orphanage.  And she probably wouldn't have accepted, she had barely accepted the ice cream, although she didnt' think an extra person would have added to the room, if the two girls had slept on the floor.

"you want to see if we can stay in the same room, like a slumber party?  either you with me, or me with you?  We can invite her too?" indicating Vwalda. She glanced at Mum to see her reaction.

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
“That’s cool.  I’m pretty sure I remember my Father saying that it’s a really good book.  I bought a few new books too—some novels and some non-fiction.  You’re welcome to borrow them once I’ve had a chance to read them.”

At the suggested slumber party, she glanced over at Mrs. Jones to make sure she didn’t have any objections.  Mrs. Jones answered, "That should be fine as long as you don’t stay up to late.  You’re going to have a busy day tomorrow after all.”

Amanda smiled and turned back to Claire.  “Sure.  Mrs. Jones and I each have our own rooms, so mine might be the easiest.”  She had a feeling that Claire and her Mum had probably been planning to share a room.

Mum nodded.   "You are all packed. But don't stay up too late."

Claire looked at Amanda, nodding at Vwalda. "You want to ask her, or should I?"

Amanda ate another bite of her vegetables as she made up her mind and then answered, “I don’t mind asking her.  But, either way is fine.”

After a moment, Amanda got up and walked over to the table where Vwalda and her Mother were sitting.  She waited for a moment to be noticed, and then said in a tone that was polite but confident, “Good evening Mrs. Lithy, Vwalda.  I’m sorry to interrupt your meal and book.  But, Claire and I decided to have a slumber party in my room tonight, and we were wondering if Vwalda would care to join us.”

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
Amanda nodded, “It would hardly be fair to ask you to sleep on the floor, considering...and I’m sure we could get some extra pillows from the proprietor.  I’m staying in room number 217.  My family’s housekeeper, Mrs. Jones, will be right next door.  Feel free to come by whenever its convenient, after we’re done eating and such.”

After listening to any response from Vwalda, Amanda returned to her table and took her seat.  “Vwalda agreed to join our slumber party.  But, because of her condition, we'll have to let her have the bed."

James was reluctant to join the Grints; he had seen that approving look before.  But, he liked the boy and wanted to continue the friendship so he picked up his plate and walked over to join them.

He set his dinner upon the table before bowing shallowly and introducing himself.

"Evening Ma'am and Sir, My name is James Evans."

Amanda and Mrs. Jones chatted with Claire and her Mum as they ate, keeping the topics of conversation light.  Mrs. Jones mentioned a new dumpling recipe she’d found and a couple of new cooking charms she had learned recently.  Amanda’s attention seemed to mostly be focused on Hogwarts, though she did also mention that she’d gotten an owl and was looking forward to introducing it to Claire.

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
Will came down the stairs, a few steps in front of his older brother.  The two exchanged a bit of an icy glare, the brother going off to join a small group of older students and Will himself just standing there and looking about the room.  He did recognize Amanda, but she was busy with the other girls, and he had no intent of injecting himself into that coversation.

He did see a couple other bows his age, but the grandparents' presence kept him from going over and introducing himself.  Instead he stood there for a moment, chewing his lip.  With a small sigh he sat down at a small table, staring at the scratched table top, tracing one bit of grafitti with his finger.  When someone finally came over to ask what he wanted to eat, he simply mumbled.. "Soup?"

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
Val's grandparents were predictably pleased that James had accepted their invitation. Gran spoke first "Good evening to you, young man, my name is Imelda Grints and this is my husband Onslow. Valdemar tells me that you are Professor Snape's ward. I do admire Professor Snape, I studied with him myself many years ago. We were both in Slytherin house together. Are you going to Hogwarts tomorrow?" Val cringes when Gran uses his correct name, rolls his eyes and has the good decency to look embarrassed both on behalf of himself and for James.

Before James can reply, Gran Imelda then launches into a long and rambling discourse, reminiscing about her days at Hogwarts and practically deifying Snape. Both Val and Grandad Onslow shrink into their seats as Imelda goes on and on. Imelda raises questions everytime either Val, Onslow or James raises a forkfull of food to their mouths; interupting the process of gustation long enough to ignore any reply received before proceeding once again in her self important rambling.

Val looks over at James and nods towards Will, who is sitting alone, the unspoken message in his eyes saying "do you want to go over there?" Grandad Onslow picks up on this silent interchange and quickly interupts Imelda "dear, why not let the boys leave the table. They seem to be finished with their food."

Imelda looks shocked at Onslow's ability to get a word in edgewise. As she scolds her aged husband for daring to interupt her while she is talking, Val and James sneak away from the table (followed by a wink from Grandad).

In reply to Amanda Davis (msg #17):

'Well Gigi's coming with me, but I could probably bring a dozen cats and no one cept us would notice any missing.  Ok, da;s hunting dog might. But otherwise everything is packed.  "  now she was bouncing on her seat, Da was a firm believer that children should be seen and not heard, especially in public, so she tended to be subdued around him, but now she was getting excitable, wanting to go upstairs, although really it was just the chance to do something different.

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
Claire’s excitement was contagious and Amanda ended up eating her meal more quickly than normal as she chatted with her friend.  She chuckled a bit at Claire’s comment, “Hogsmeade might not notice they were missing.  But your Head of House would probably notice if you tried to slip a dozen cats into your room.  Still, I was wishing earlier today that I could buy more than one familiar.  There was the cutest puppy in the Magical Menagerie.”

“I wonder what type of familiar Will ended up choosing. He was looking for something a bit different than the usual cat or owl.” As she mentioned Will’s name she noticed him sitting at another table, staring at the tabletop with an unhappy expression.  She watched for a moment or two to see if he would glance their way, and if he did, she gave him a friendly smile and a wave.  Obviously she couldn't invite him to join their slumber party.  Her parents would kill her, if Claire's Mum didn't.  But, she decided she would at least stop by his table and say hi before heading upstairs.

After eating a few more bites of her meal, she asked Claire, “Are you ready to head upstairs?”

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
James sat through the stories pretty calmly.  He was sorta used to it, wasn't much to do in his childhood home except tell stories.  He also sympathized with the name thing, hi sister insisted in calling him 'Jimmy" and since he hated it, she insisted all the more.  Al the same, when the out came, James was close behind Val as they moved towards Will.

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
Will was watching the departing waiter as James and Val came over.  He does seem surprised for a moment, but it eventually turns into a smile.  Maybe the evening wouldn't be completely boring like he had thought it would.  "Hi."

Okay, so it's not the most chipper greeting, but he does look genuinely pleased to be having someone to talk to.  He did look over to the grandparents, probably still lost in their own little argument, then over to the table of older hogwarts students, all clear over there as well, it seemed. "You, uh, wanna sit?"

Re: The Leaky Cauldron
"Thanks," enthuses Val "I'm Val and I don't know if you met James before."

Val looks over to the table where his grandparents are sitting, to see that Imelda is still running her mouth of ten to the dozen while Onslow inspects his finger nails for blemishes, half a grin on his face. The pair then get up from the table and leave the room, Imelda still talking and prodding Onslow with her elbow. She smiles at the boys as they walk past and reminds Val that he needs to be in bed by 9pm "you've got a busy day tomorrow."

"So, where are you from?" Val asks Will.

"I'm Will."  Will sat up straighter in his chair, as it actually did turn out the other two boys wanted to talk.  He gave Val's grandparents a weak smile as they went by, watching their backs for a moment.

Soon enough his attention was fully back on Val and James. "Me?  I'm from Hampshire, close enough to London really, but since we're leaving soon, no point going back, right?" He gets a bit of a hungry look in his eyes when he thinks about the reason.  "Can you believe it, finally we get to learn magic.."  He blushes a little once he realises he was rambling a little. "What about you, where're you from?"

"My family moved around a lot, but we spent most of our time in Wales.  And,I am excited to learn magic as well."

James slid into the seat and set what was left of his pumpkin juice before him.  It was getting late, but a little conversation before bed might be just what he needed to fall asleep.
