![]() In the back is the small restricted section. The security is very good during operating hours, but lax at night. Luckily, getting into the library is not so easy after some unfortunate incidents in the nineties. The current librarian is Mademoiselle Travers, a most beautiful and graceful woman of old wizarding blood. Because of her there are many boys found loitering in the library. She rarely wears witches' robes, instead favoring dresses.

Athene was awed by the size of the library when they got there. But then a look of dismay came over her and she asked, "You guys to have a system for organizing books like the Dewey Decimal System right?"

Amanda looked around the library with an expression of delight. It seemed almost as big as the Wizarding Library of Great Britain and was definitely larger than the Hogsmeade Library. She nodded in response to Athene’s question and answered in a distracted tone, as she continued to gaze at the shelves of books, “Yes. We use the Alexandrian System and there should be a book around here somewhere that acts as a catalog. You just write the book or topic you are looking for into it and it tells you where to find it. Is there a specific section you’re looking for?” This message was last edited by the player at 05:04, Mon 27 Dec 2010.

Serena entered the library and had to stop herself from gaping like a fish. All of that knowledge in one place was amazing. Serena heard Valdemar say Wow and she turned to him and smiled as she said,"I agree, Wow, pretty much sums it up. Amazing yes?"

Val ambled down the library's main aisle, making a mental note of the categories that are shelved in each aisle, before reaching the restricted section at the back end and turning around to stare back in the direction he came. Val wondered where the librarian was?

"Well actually, I was thinking about books on calligraphy and penmanship. Something with illustrations on how to hold the quill and stuff like that." Athene answered the girl honestly.

After a brief search she found the large leather-bound book that acted as the library’s card catalog. A large black quill was chained next to it, laying under a sign that explained how to use the catalog. Amanda glanced quickly at the instructions and after seeing they were the same as those used by the other libraries she’d visited, wrote “calligraphy and or penmanship,” onto the book. As she lifted the quill from the page, a list of books appeared beneath her words. She glanced quickly over the list and then moved over so that Athene could take a look, “It looks like you’ll want section NC.” Once Athene had finished with the catalog, Amanda took the chance to try a couple of searches of her own. After writing “Clear,” to remove the previous lines of text, she first did a search on “Ancient Roman and Greek history,” then one on “Ancient Egyptian History,” and finally tried, “book listing all of the current rules of Hogwarts.” This message was last edited by the player at 20:49, Mon 27 Dec 2010.

OCC: I’ve been using a slight variant of the Library of Congress system for the books. I have no idea if the library would have a book containing the current rules of Hogwarts or where it would be found. So, I’ll hold off on that until I hear from one of our GMs. This message was last edited by the player at 22:29, Mon 27 Dec 2010.

She did get turned around once or twice, but once in the right area it was fairly easy to find. The first couple of books she looked at were no help at all; they were obviously for advanced calligraphy. Of course none of the titles were either 'Penmanship for Dummies' or 'An Idiot's Guide to Calligraphy', but she eventually found a book that was promising, it had illustrations on how hold a quill as well as detailed descriptions of how to make the strokes with the quill to make each letter. While she wasn't planning on making her writing as fancy as the book was showing it, it would be easy enough to simplify the letters for everyday writing. Happy for at least finding something useful, she started heading off towards the History section. On the way she saw another catalog book and on a whim she opened it and wrote as carefully as she could 'The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien'. She lifted the quill and waited. And waited. Finally the writing changed to state: 'No such book found'. Sighing, Athene left after writing 'clear' on the page and closing the book.

"Hello boys, that section is off limits without permission from a professor, which you won't get as first years. It's best to not even dream of it."

Lost Magic of the Ancients had also caught her attention, but after skimming through it for several minutes, Amanda realized that it was much too advanced for her to grasp. She set it back on the shelf, deciding to try it again in a few years. This message was last edited by the player at 04:27, Fri 31 Dec 2010.

Serena then searched the shelves until she found a book that she hoped would meet her needs and then took it to a table and sat down to check it out.

Deciding to get to work, Amanda removed one of the leather bound journals from her book bag and carefully wrote “First Year History of Magic,” on the first page. Turning to a fresh page, she wrote the date at the top and then began carefully copying her notes from class neatly into the journal, adding a few additional notes from the text book and comments as she wrote. OOC: By the way, did the search for “book listing all of the current rules of Hogwarts,” pull up anything and if so, is it available for checkout or in the restricted section? Amanda walked to the section of the library containing the books about Hogwarts and browsed through the books resting near Hogwarts: a History. After selecting a small assortment of the most useful ones, she returned to the table where the other girls were sitting. After checking the time on her enamel watch pendant necklace, Amanda began reading through the books, checking both to see if there were any rules against using dicta-quills in class or muggle pens at any time, and to see which of the books she should check out. Setting two of the most interesting and useful books about Hogwarts in her stack of books to check out, Amanda pulled her potions textbook and another leather journal out of her book bag. After writing, “Year One Potions,” on the first page of the journal, she once again began transcribing her notes. One page was devoted to the professor’s lecture, another to a list of the ingredients they had identified in class and the methods of recognizing them, and one page to each potion. Amanda frowned slightly as she tried, with limited success, to sketch a picture of fluxweed into her potions journal. This message was last edited by the player at 08:14, Mon 03 Jan 2011. |
