Re: NOv 1st Lunchtime in the library,
James strolled into the Library, remarkably silent.  Robert was on his left and between him and Claire.  In fact, James had not spoken to Claire yet this morning, still blushing if he so much as looked at her robes.  The last time he had accidentally looked at her full in the face, when they had shown up to Charms class, he had turned tomato red.  He really wished he could forget that morning.

Once in the Library, he hurried over to where Athene and Amanda were standing over the catalogs and frowned at their odd searches, "Flying snakes?  Like the Slytherin Quiditch team?"

Re: NOv 1st Lunchtime in the library,
Claire had stuck with James and Robert after charms class just cause she didn't want to deal with more sneezing, but she hadn't said much.  Charms itself had been disastrous.  Once Professor Prewett had removed the jinx, the testing had started. After she had helped James this morning, and watched him and several other people pass the test, she'd been unable to cast the counter-jinx herself.   Potions hadn't been much better.  On the other hand, she kept from crying.

Once in the library, she had seperated from the two boys, and wandered over to kiri's table for the obligatory galce over of her books.  Kiri put her hand on top of them, as Claire smiled. "Already read those, thanks."  She waved at lloyd,  "Hi." half-heartedly.

Re: NOv 1st Lunchtime in the library,
The heavy bag he had used to carry a few books and the listing for his homework didnt seem suitable for the truthfully light load he was carrying. He looked over the students and reconized a few of them from the hufflepuff common room.

He waved to Kiri and to the older students he knew before finding a spot near them so he could pick up any information of what was ahead for the first years.

Re: NOv 1st Lunchtime in the library,
The class was interesting but now that he was at the library he halfway blushed as he spotted the librarian doing her list. He turned and tried to get the idiot look off his face as he sat down near Athene and the others.

Out of habit he glanced around to see if any of the bad snake house was nearby to listen. Glancing over to Athene, Ok, so what is so secret?, Prof Lestrange back in school?.

"Shhhh!  Not so loud!" Athene hissed at James.  She rolled her eyes at Robert's comment.  "Seeing as how she's been sitting up at the Headmaster's table all year, I'll refrain from stating the obvious."

Re: NOv 1st Lunchtime in the library,
The various searches turn up several magical menagerie books, including the Monster Book of Monsters, a notorious text book amongst the COMC crowd.  Also on the list are several eastern European books, Egyptian works, some stuff from America on Quetzalcoatl.  Interesting enough, Athene's search in specific turns up a history of famous Slytherin: "Snakes and other Noble Sorts" as well as a treatise on Parseltongue by a man 300 years ago by the name of Ophidian Gaunt.

Amanda's search turns up several texts on the ancient Hittite, Phoenician, Carthaginian, and Akkadian religions.  A few rather eccentric looking treatises by christian thamauturges on various demons shows up as well.

Once she finished jotting down the title of a book on ancient Mesopotamian religions, she added quietly.  “Why don’t we gather up a few of these books first and then find someplace quiet for our discussion.”

Athene nodded and finished writing down her list of books.  She made sure that both catalog books were cleared before the gang left the area.  "Yeah we don't need anyone listening in when we explain what's going on."

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
"Wait, when you wanted to meet in the Library, I thought you had something to talk about, not study weird old religions.  What's all this about flying snakes and possession anyway?"  James whispered in a bit of exasperation.  He looked over to where some Firsties were gathering and thought about breaking away.  Then he saw Claire near them and it was obvious he was going to help Athene and Amanda.

"Right, I'll take the ones in Wizarding history and you take the ones in the DADA section.  Meet at the usual table?  Right, break!"

James forgot to keep his voice down at 'break' and blushed when Miss Travers shushed him.  He rushed off into the stacks so that the others wouldn't see his face, not just Claire.

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
Lloyd naturally takes note of several other students meeting at another table.  While his own senses can pick up somewhat suspicious behavior, he decides to just let it be for now.  If they've got secrets, they're not likely to tell him unless they trust him, which they have no reason to do as yet.  He returns his attention to Kiri and Claire as she joins the table.  Although he's not met her properly yet, he's been told she's in the same house as him.

"Hiya," he answers with his disarming gap-toothed grin.

He does note that she seems...what is it?  Down? Troubled?  Not quite sure.  Well, now's the moment to take a stab and see if it blows up in his face.

"Rough day?" he asks in a lowered voice so as not to make a big deal out of it, "I'm good at listening, if'n y'need an ear."

Yeah, I'll leave it at that.  She wants to talk, she'll talk.  She doesn't, then let it be.

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
Finally, Nick reached the libarary.  Of the students that were already there, he noticed a Ravenclaw first-year girl at one of the tables with a pile of books who was with a couple of other kids who Nick didn't recognise.  Although he didn't know this girl, he had seen her in the Ravenclaw common room before and she stood out to Nick because like him, was very tall for her age.  He hadn't made any real friends as such yet in his short time at Hogwarts, but perhaps this girl would be friendly to another 'lanky sod'.  If he needed an excuse to talk to this girl, he had a genuine one as he was not bookish by nature and could really do with help navigating the plethora of shelves.  Gingerly, he approached the table, coughed to clear his throat and spoke.

"Hey there.  Erm...you're in Ravenclaw aren't you?  I think I've seen you about in the common room...an' stuff."

Truly, it was a pathetic opener but it was the best he had.  Of course she was in Ravenclaw.  She's in the same house and many of the same classes so quite obviously he would have seen this girl around a fair bit, even if they hadn't actually conversed.  It was also clearly apparent that Nick had not, in his eleven years on this planet, spoken with girls much.  They didnt know the offside rule and couldn't kick for toffee so what could he talk to them about which would have kept his interest?

Nick half-smiled as an attempt to hide any anxiety at speaking to Kiri and hoped that she would help him.  "Yeah...erm...d'you know where the books are on the magical history...uh...history of magic?"

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
Kiri looked at Claire with raised eyebrows. "You sure?" then smiled.  They had a friendly rivalry for the books, for some reason, they seemed to be researching the same topics. Maybe sometime they'd actually talk about why.  "This is Lloyd, he's a new first year, he's on your house.  He's from the states, Did the professor say which one?"

once Nick came over, she looked at him.  "Kiri,  About time.  You're gonna start coming to the study group now, aren't you? Most of the people who think they're better than everyone else have finally stopped coming."  She considered the fact that Miles had stopped coming to be an improvement to the group.

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
Pleasantly surprised that a girl had actually spoken to him, Nick scratched the back of his head as he replied somewhat nervously.  "Uh...there's a study group?"

Nick had been so engrossed in both his personal studies or 'broom-time' that he didn't even know there was anything like a study group around.  It would of course benefit him immensely because no doubt there would be kids around who'd be able to explain to him the intricacies of things he just didn't get, like that thing from History of Magic this morning which had something to do with...Egypt.  At least, it was Egypt this morning wasn't it...or was that last week?  Seriously, someone had to be around to help him with this stuff.  Maybe even Kiri...

"Yeah...urm...that would be cool.  Where and when does it happen?"

He figured he'd be able to trade any help he got at this club.  After all, he was pretty decent at potions and already managed to successfully brew an draught to counter the itching powder that was going around.  Someone might need help with that...

"I'm Nick by the way," he added for those who didn't already know.

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
Claire looked down at the boy from the US. "Claire.  Thanks for the offer, just had a bad day in class.  Join the study group.  It'll help you catch up." Her accent was unmistakably scottish, fairly thick.  Everything she was wearing was obviously second hand, her frizzy red hair done up in one messy braid down her back.  Those familiar with her habits would know that she had done it up very quickly, usually the frizz was as tucked in as possible.  WHen Nick spoke about History of magic books, and Kiri didn't answer, she pointed at a series of shelves.  "Over there.  Good luck."

She glanced at the other second years at the catalog.  "See you later. We're having a small study group, so i should get over there." and then headed over to the catalog to Athene, Amanda, and Robert were, James had already scooted off into the books.  "What're we looking up?  SHe asked quietly.

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
Athene was quickly folding her parchment into three segments and deftly tearing it along the crisp folds.  She handed one segment to Robert and the second one to Claire as she showed up.  "We'll explain at the usual study table after we find these books.  But it has to do with snakes and my nightmares." she explained softly before heading off to to find the books on her portion of the list.

Due to being pariahs for a good chunk of last year, they had found a table out of the way and out of ear shot of the other regular study groups.  Athene was familiar with the section dealing with languages since she had searched for books on Parseltongue last year.  How she had missed this treatise before she didn't know but but maybe it could help them with this flying snake problem.

She quickly found all the books and headed to their spot, checking for the others on the way in case they needed any help with their lists.

In reply to Nicholas Lexington (msg #62):

Kiri quoted a time and place for the study group. "I don't even remember what the last subject was in that class, I'll have to look at the syllabus and the pages in the history book. I think I wrote down the homework, thank all the gods in all the heavens he writes it on the board,  I can't stay awake for the ghost." she made a face and patted the pile of thick books of recent history she had. "THese are a personal project."

She turned her attention back to the new guy."So tell me, lloyd, what do you think of having a ghost teach history? Let me know if you manage to stay awake this afternoon?"

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
Claire found her listed books fairly quickly as well, although she did have to climb on a ladder to get to two of them, and then headed over to the table. Once she sat down opposite  Athene, she had to keep moving, keep pulling things in and out of her satchel to be busy until the others got there.

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
Again with the mysterious quest of Athene, he glanced over the scrap of paper she had handed him and came to the conclusion that it was some books and that he was suppose to know that he is to pick them up.

Most of the books he already knew about so he found those in short order, a few he wondered what they had to do about school work. He knew that Ravenclaws had a differant series of classes but he didnt think they studied those subjects.

Dragging the books over to the table he only had to pause once and glower at one of the slytherin bonks who had raised his wand towards him to back him down.

Finding the others he sit the books down and tried to look at Athene with a bit of anger at her, I sure hope you have a reason for this snipe hunt, cause it is a pile of strange books you want to read here.

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
Finding the books was easy enough.  He looked at their titles and flipped through the first pages in interest.  They seemed cool enough, but he was still a bit flabbergasted by the whole research angle.  He was sure that he had not missed anything this interesting in any class.  Well, he was sure that Athene or Amanda would explain eventually.  The tome about notable Slytherins was pretty interesting actually, despite that he had thought it would be stupid.

He was walking to their usual table, reading an entry on Phinneas Niggelus, when he looked up and saw Claire.  He paused for just a second then moved over and took his normal seat at one end of the table.  He looked up through his eyelashes at her and.. looked to Athene, "So, what's all the hubbub, bub?  Er, Athene?  Hey, did you guys know that the bloke what invented whizzing fizzbees was a Snake?"

In reply to Kiri Wilson (msg #65):

Nick swivelled his head in the direction that Claire had pointed and thanked her before she headed off to join her friends.

As Kiri spoke, Nick turned his attention back to her and listened to what she had to say.  "A personal project eh?  Anything interesting?"

Nick sounded genuine in his enquiry.  Perhaps Kiri might need some help with whatever it was she was working on and if so, he'd be glad to help.  After all, she seemed quite studious and perhaps they'd be able to bounce ideas off each other.  Then again, perhaps Kiri would think he was a jerk and tell him to go away.  Nick hoped not.

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
Since James had volunteered to take  care of the Wizarding History portion of her list, Amanda’s book gathering was focused in the Defense Against Dark Arts and  Magical Creatures sections.  Before long, she joined the others at their usual out of the way table, carrying a fairly large stack of books.  Taking a seat next to Claire, she arranged the books in a couple of neat piles in front of her.  Speaking quietly, she answered Robert, “Yes, there is a good reason for the research.  Athene has discovered that one of the students in the school, my cousin, either has a dangerous creature for a pet or has been possessed by it.  In either case, we need to figure out what exactly it is and how to deal with the situation.  But, since Athene has the most direct knowledge of the problem, I should probably let her explain the details.”

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
Athene took a deep breath and blew it out slowly before starting.  She kept her voice low just in case anyone was spying on them.  "I've been having weird repeating, kind of, dreams since the start of school.  You may have noticed my preoccupation with drawings?"

She opened her notebook and flipped through it, just about every other page was filled with doodles of the yin yang symbol and bursts of flames.

"Well last night it was a full fledge nightmare.  The yin yang symbol was chasing me through a dark forest, tearing up the trees as it spun, like it's edges were diamond coated or something.  Suddenly a centaur reared up in front of me and struck me in the chest.  It didn't hurt or anything like you'd expect, but it did send me tumbling backwards in slow motion towards the symbol.  That's when I woke up."  She flipped to the last drawing, the one she did in the wee hours of the morning while trying to calm down from the dream.

"But that's not where the weirdness ended.  My .... um....  my familar... Mehen, told me... that I can't let the flying snake scare me.  When I asked him to explain what he meant he said that the flying snake was very dark; that it can fly into people's minds.  He also said that the boy on the train that made me angry either was one or had one.  He couldn't really explain it to me all that well.  And well the only boy who did that was Miles Davis."

"Amanda and I think that this flying snake is trying to get into my head.  I can't exactly go the Headmaster with this, not without getting into trouble for having Mehen in the first place.  So we figured if we can find out more about these flying mind invaders we might be able to prove that it's here at Hogwart's without exposing Mehen."

She had no idea if Claire had told the boys about Mehen or not, so she was expecting to hear it from them if they didn't know already.  But she was willing to face the backlash so long as they didn't betray her to the Headmaster.

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
"Florida," says Lloyd in answer to the question of which state he's from, "the panhandle...or the redneck riviera as pa used to call it."

He considers the thought of a ghost teaching history...and then shrugs.

"If anybody's qualified to teach history," he muses, "I guess a ghost comes pretty well top o' the list...'specially if he lived through what he's teachin'."

Lloyd isn't bothered by Claire not confiding in him.  Hell, she doesn't even know him.  But at least the offer has been made.  Maybe next time.  He considers the study group that Kiri mentioned...that'll get him on the right track and give him access to a few knowledgeable folk if he needs a few questions answered, or at least help him find the answers to any questions he might have.

"Right then," he says now quite comfortable with the idea, "I'd be happy to join.  When and where...less'n it's here and now."

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
All joking about famous Slytherins aside, James sat stunned as Athene told her story.  She had a familiar?  James didn't recall Athene having a familiar, yet.  He wondered what this Mehen was, a cat, one of those Egyptian looking ones.  he knew that Athene had a thing for Egypt and cats.  Suddenly, James had an idea.

He ran to the catalog, under the frown of Miss Travers, and scribbled something into it then ran for the stacks.  Minutes later he came back with a book each on Occlumency and Legilimency.  "It doesn't help you figure out your problem, but maybe these can help with defense against the dreams?"

He flipped a book open and his face fell.  It was pretty complicated stuff.  Still, he pushed it to Athene.  "Only reason I thought of it is that is why I can't get away with bollocks during the summer.  Mr. Snape can read minds you know, for real read minds.  Maybe there is a 'Mind reading for Dummies?'"

Re: Nov 1st Lunchtime in the library,
He sit and listened tight lipped as she explained about her dreams and something about her familiar Mehen and of the last dream she had, combined with the information from Amanda, he tried to absorb it all and struggled hard with it.

So these snake things or flying snake things are psionic?. I take it they are after you because you noticed the new boy that was acting strange?.
