Library
The Hogwarts Library is located at the fourth floor of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and contains tens of thousands of books on thousands of shelves. Overseen by Madamoiselle Teres Travers, the library is where students can go to peruse or borrow books to supplement their studies (or for personal enjoyment). The library closes at 8:00 pm.

In the back is the small restricted section.  The security is very good during operating hours, but lax at night.  Luckily, getting into the library is not so easy after some unfortunate incidents in the nineties.

The current librarian is Mademoiselle Travers, a most beautiful and graceful woman of old wizarding blood.  Because of her there are many boys found loitering in the library.  She rarely wears witches' robes, instead favoring dresses.

Re: Library
From the Ravenclaw Common Room

Athene was awed by the size of the library when they got there.  But then a look of dismay came over her and she asked, "You guys to have a system for organizing books like the Dewey Decimal System right?"

Re: Library
From Ravenclaw Common Room

Amanda looked around the library with an expression of delight.  It seemed almost as big as the Wizarding Library of Great Britain and was definitely larger than the Hogsmeade Library.  She nodded in response to Athene’s question and answered in a distracted tone, as she continued to gaze at the shelves of books, “Yes.  We use the Alexandrian System and there should be a book around here somewhere that acts as a catalog.  You just write the book or topic you are looking for into it and it tells you where to find it.  Is there a specific section you’re looking for?”

---From Ravenclaw Common Room

Serena entered the library and had to stop herself from gaping like a fish. All of that knowledge in one place was  amazing. Serena heard Valdemar say Wow and she turned to him and smiled as she said,"I agree, Wow, pretty much sums it up. Amazing yes?"

"Amazing?" asked Val, rhetorically, "it's bloody brilliant!"

Val ambled down the library's main aisle, making a mental note of the categories that are shelved in each aisle, before reaching the restricted section at the back end and turning around to stare back in the direction he came.

Val wondered where the librarian was?

In reply to Amanda Davis (msg #3):

"Well actually, I was thinking about books on calligraphy and penmanship.  Something with illustrations on how to hold the quill and stuff like that." Athene answered the girl honestly.

Re: Library
Amanda considered for a moment and then shook her head, “I’m not sure what section those types of books would be in.  But, it shouldn’t be hard to find out.   Let’s find the catalog.“  She started strolling down the middle aisle looking for the catalog of books, “I think I’ll want to check the ancient history and literature sections today.”

After a brief search she found the large leather-bound book that acted as the library’s card catalog.  A large black quill was chained next to it, laying under a sign that explained how to use the catalog.  Amanda glanced quickly at the instructions and after seeing they were the same as those used by the other libraries she’d visited, wrote  “calligraphy and or penmanship,” onto the book.  As she lifted the quill from the page, a list of books appeared beneath her words.  She glanced quickly over the list and then moved over so that Athene could take a look, “It looks like you’ll want section NC.”

Once Athene had finished with the catalog, Amanda took the chance to try a couple of searches of her own.  After writing “Clear,” to remove the previous lines of text, she first did a search on “Ancient Roman and Greek history,” then one on “Ancient Egyptian History,” and finally tried, “book listing all of the current rules of Hogwarts.”

Serena was surprised, and oddly hurt, when Valdemar spoke to her and then left. So.she followed Athene and Amanda. Serena remarked,"I too am interested in the history section as I am from a different Country, and I need to catch up."

Amanda turned to Serena as she mentioned, “History is in sections D through F.  English History is mostly in section E.  Though the catalog should help you pin down the exact area.”  Once she’d finished her searches she moved over so that Serena could take a turn.

After makes a few quick notes with her BIC pen on the back of her hand, Athene watched as Amanda did her own search.  "See you guys in the History aisles as soon as I look over these books?" she asked, wanting to know where they'd be.

Re: Library
Amanda nodded, “Sounds good.  We should be browsing the books in the history section for a while.  But, if you get delayed, and we aren’t there any more, try the literature section, PN through PZ.”

OCC:  I’ve been using a slight variant of the Library of Congress system for the books.  I have no idea if the library would have a book containing the current rules of Hogwarts or where it would be found.  So, I’ll hold off on that until I hear from one of our GMs.

Re: Library
"K, see you in a bit." she told them as she got her bearings from the shelves near by.  She headed off towards where the NC section should be at a brisk but quiet pace.

She did get turned around once or twice, but once in the right area it was fairly easy to find.  The first couple of books she looked at were no help at all; they were obviously for advanced calligraphy.  Of course none of the titles were either 'Penmanship for Dummies' or 'An Idiot's Guide to Calligraphy', but she eventually found a book that was promising, it had illustrations on how hold a quill as well as detailed descriptions of how to make the strokes with the quill to make each letter.  While she wasn't planning on making her writing as fancy as the book was showing it, it would be easy enough to simplify the letters for everyday writing.

Happy for at least finding something useful, she started heading off towards the History section.  On the way she saw another catalog book and on a whim she opened it and wrote as carefully as she could 'The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien'.  She lifted the quill and waited.  And waited.  Finally the writing changed to state: 'No such book found'.

Sighing, Athene left after writing 'clear' on the page and closing the book.

Re: Library
It seems Will came straight here from History class, instead of swinging by the common room, as his cauldron still hangs from his one hand.  He stands at the very back of the library, peering through a decorative metal grille into the very back section of the library, the Restricted Section.  Of course, with it being restricted he's not actually going in, but that doesn't stop him from standing there and staring at all the books along the shelves.

He looks down towards the door through the barrier, frowning towards it slightly before the books once more get his attention.

Seeing Will at the gate to the Restricted Section, Val gave up his search for the Librarian and simply said to Will "Hi, didn't see you there." Then he frowns "That History class was a bit of a drag, eh? Looking for anything in particular?"

Suddenly a very pretty witch appears behind the boys.  She is wearing a deep dlue dress with white sash and white high heels.

"Hello boys, that section is off limits without permission from a professor, which you won't get as first years.  It's best to not even dream of it."

Re: Library
Once Serena was finished with her searches, Amanda walked with her to the history section, “You should find most of the English history books here.  I’ll be a couple of shelves over in the Ancient History section.”  Before long, Amanda was contentedly looking through the books relating to Greek, Roman, and Egyptian history and selecting a few that looked interesting and that she hadn’t already read to check out:  The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire, Legends of Ancient Greece and Rome, and Mysteries of Ancient Egypt.

Lost Magic of the Ancients had also caught her attention, but after skimming through it for several minutes, Amanda realized that it was much too advanced for her to grasp.  She set it back on the shelf, deciding to try it again in a few years.

Serena smiled at Amanda and said,"Thanks Amanda. I really appreciate all the help."

Serena then searched the shelves until she found a book that she hoped would meet her needs and then took it to a table and sat down to check it out.

Athene joined the two girls after a while having stopped for a second time to pick out a copy of Hogwarts, A History that she saw as she made her way through the history section.  "Hi guys.  I survived the trip; there and back again." she said with a grin of self amusement.  She sat down opposite of Serena and opened the calligraphy book to the first chapter and started reading.

Re: Library
Amanda glanced up from The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire as Athene rejoined them, grinning a bit in response to Athene’s statement.  “The library is almost large enough to get lost in.”  Though tempted to browse through the fiction section as well, Amanda did her best to convince herself that she already had more than enough unread novels in her dorm room and that the library would still be here tomorrow.

Deciding to get to work, Amanda removed one of the leather bound journals from her book bag and carefully wrote “First Year History of Magic,” on the first page.  Turning to a fresh page, she wrote the date at the top and then began carefully copying her notes from class neatly into the journal, adding a few additional notes from the text book and comments as she wrote.

OOC:  By the way, did the search for “book listing all of the current rules of Hogwarts,” pull up anything and if so, is it available for checkout or in the restricted section?

Re: Library
Amanda transcribed her history notes quietly for some time, politely responding to any comments addressed to her but not initiating a conversation with the two girls working beside her.  Once she finished the last line of notes, she tucked the textbook and journal back in her book bag and mentioned quietly, “I’m going to go get a couple more books.  I’ll be back soon.”

Amanda walked to the section of the library containing the books about Hogwarts and browsed through the books resting near Hogwarts: a History.  After selecting a small assortment of the most useful ones, she returned to the table where the other girls were sitting. After checking the time on her enamel watch pendant necklace, Amanda began reading through the books, checking both to see if there were any rules against using dicta-quills in class or muggle pens at any time, and to see which of the books she should check out.

Re: Library
Amanda frowned slightly as she discovered her initial plan for dealing with Professor Binn’s lectures wouldn’t work.  “I don’t see any rules specifically forbidding the use of muggle pens, so it looks like that is up to the teachers.  However, since students generally have to use anti-cheating quills to take tests, you’ll still want to practice with your quill.”

Setting two of the most interesting and useful books about Hogwarts in her stack of books to check out, Amanda pulled her potions textbook and another leather journal out of her book bag.  After writing, “Year One Potions,” on the first page of the journal, she once again began transcribing her notes.  One page was devoted to the professor’s lecture, another to a list of the ingredients they had identified in class and the methods of recognizing them, and one page to each potion.

Re: Library
Athene shrugged, "I figured as much.  Luckily this book is proving to be very useful.  I just hope we don't have a lot of written homework until I get better at it.  This is just one of many things they don't tell you about if you are a normal kid.  Maybe I should write a noobs guide to being a witch?" She said the last bit jokingly, but the more she thought about it the better the idea sounded.  Maybe she could make some decent coin from it?  Shrugging again for the moment, she went back to her reading and studying of the illustrations.

Re: Library
“Sort of like the Guides for Young Witches and Wizards, but for muggle-borns old enough to attend Hogwarts, and just one book instead of a dozen or so?  It sounds like something that could be useful.  I’m sort of surprised that there isn’t one already.”

Amanda frowned slightly as she tried, with limited success, to sketch a picture of fluxweed into her potions journal.
