OOC part the fourth part 9or is it fifth?)
Keep it up in this thread now.

Yes, the new thread can be used for friendly chatter. Need something to get some fire going on in here while I plot in the PLOT threads. Players can feel free to mention important information like what house they are sticking in.

Players from other schools, please take a moment to write how your school introduces itself. I will write something for the NPC schools tomorrow.

OOC part the fourth part 9or is it fifth?)
Okay, the first three events will be the train, the opening ceremony, and the welcoming ceremony.

The train and welcoming will be PLOT related. The Opening will be fluff only and a place for us to mingle, post IC, and get some steam back. I am going to try this format for now. Since my OOC has always been a controlled place, kinda, lets have some people discuss ideas for their school's Welcoming ceremony performances. It should be demonstrations of school pride, spirit, and the skill taught. Themes of your houses, patron animals, and such are encouraged heavily.

We need performances from our Hogwart's students as well if you think your characters would have volunteered or been volunteered for the job. Anyway, the Welcoming ceremony will also be where I announce the course of events for the Festival as well as some of the names and events expected. Please let me know if you would like to be involved in events once they are announced.

Last, I am considering seeking out a few new players one last time as there is still time and room. They'd only be allowed to play names on my list of students from other schools I suppose. Just had an idea of where I might find some excellent writers I can trust is all.

OOC part the fourth part 9or is it fifth?)
Witches and Wizards like to show off! Could be a bit like the olympics. A parade with each school showing off talent and insignia as they go. With a slight variation could be more like the Mardi Gras with school kids allowed to mingle

Me: I have a set piece that would be cool. The Headmistress used to be a circus performer (contortionist acrobat), and married the Lion Tamer (he's dead now... murdered) I've learnt her act. It could be done on a 'float'

Other options:
  • Like in Goblet of fire with each school doing a 'demonstration of magic' as they arrive. Harder to pull off as we've come by train, but perhaps the 'teachers' could come that way
  • A traditional dance in national dress (fun for Salem witches .. what national dress? David Crochet hats? same problem for UK but maybe bowler hats..)

Oh yes, I have been farming players from another, trusted, game and someone has Adopted Serena Black of the Ravenclaw house.

She has been given free reign to retcon Serena to an extent but she is still the Ravenclaw girl who has been at Hogwarts for 4 years now. She is still part-veela and French and a knockout. HAve fun with that. Might be a pair more and some real fun if they take the bait. Update coming as soon as I check into a couple other games.

Also, Amanda, Athene, others might wanna discuss with Serena where she fits into stuff. I know Amanda and Serena have been friends all along.

Amanda, you are, as always, utterly brilliant! Thanks for the long PM welcoming Serena! We also have a player for Asuka now who will jump in with the latina snsation soon. Other plots are afoot as well! Haha!

Friendly reminder that the Welcoming ceremony is sort of freeplay for everyone at the moment. It is IC but not structured. I will have NPCs move through as needed and will have a sorting and announcements section to close it out but mo PLOT elements occur there really. A few clues as always for our feaident archivist, Amanda, but no PLOT events per se. Those are going to occur at the festival innauguration event after I close the train.

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
A quick question before I head off to work, and an IC post after I get home.

In Harry Potterís era, it appears as though there were approximately 280 (10 x 4 x 7) students in the school.  Due to the war and the result of the events in second year, the school is smaller now.  It appears to be closer to 200 [(8 x 4 x 7) Ė the students who left or choose not to attend due to the incident in the chamber].  Does that sound about right?

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
It really isn't a lot of wizards/witches is it?

Say that's 50 a year in the UK, and wizards an witches live an average of a hundred years (Dumbledore was 150 apparently) then there are only a few hundred... maybe a thousand...wizards and witches.

I got the feeling that 'Hogwarts was it' for the UK. The other schools were different countries.

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
That does seem quite small considering how many are seen at the ministry and the like. Especially if there are only 2 smaller schools in Europe, one in Russia. Two in East Asia (China has over a billion people so compared to the UK their school should be massive?)

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
During Harry Potterís time, there were approximately 5,000 (50 x 100), witches and wizards in Great Britain.  (I have links to a few interesting analysis/commentaries about that if youíre interested).  The number is a bit smaller now.   It does make sense when you consider how few teachers and staff there are at Hogwarts compared to the average muggle school.  But, I regularly have to remind myself of how small Hogsmeade and the magical community is and how that affects Amandaís activities, who she knows, etc.  Basically, itís the equivalent of living in a very small town where everyone is at least familiar with everyone else.

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
Then, considering the UK's population, would that make China and India's wizard population close to 200,000? And would they require far more schools in that part of the world?

It always amazes me when I actually see the population numbers from those two countries.

Sounds about right.  And it's not so much that there are only three schools in Europe, but that those three are the big three.  There are probably smaller schools around.  Just like the schools being used for this year's event are the big "Ivy League" schools of their countries.

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
It's not clear that magic isn't genetic. For example it's common in fantasy literature to have 'England and Ireland' (especially ireland) be 'particularly magical'.

I think it's up to the story teller (or GM) to decide how many wizards there are in those countries. Obviously as a Chinese PC I like the idea that we have more wizards and witches than any other country!

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
I see it as genetic/epigenetic thing.  Multiple genes needed to be present and their epigenetic markers to turn them on and off (The high squib count in overly inbred purebloods for an example of the "off" position).  There would also be epigenetic markers for intensity of the innate magic in each witch/wizard.

I see the squibs happening as a way to return more of the magic genes to the muggle gene pool, where they mix and rematch after generations to give rise to new "muggleborns".  Keeps the gene pool from stagnating.  ^_^

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
The GMs description of Kunlun implies that China probably has one of the largest magical populations.  Kulun is the only school with multiple satellite campuses.

quote:
Kunlun: Located on Jade Mountain, the whole of which is unplottable, and this is the singularly oldest school of wizardry in the world. It was founded by Huangdi, grandson to the Yellow Emperor himself. The school is also, without peer, the greatest magical school in the world. It in no way fails to measure up. Kunlun has many satellite campuses which have specialties and accept a variety of students, but the main campus accept only pureblooded wizards and occasional half-bloods if the magical lineage is old enough with unimpeachable talents. All other students are sent to the satellites. The school teaches a variety of Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian philosophies and has an eclectic array of magical courses. It has the most elective courses of any magical schools in the world and students are pushed hard to master many subjects.

Salem sounds as though it might be quite large as well.  It's building was described as "massive on the inside."

India's magical school is probably huge as well.  But, not one we are likely to be introduced to this year.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Hogwarts is one of the smallest magical schools (at least among those participating in the cultural exchange.)

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
Hehe, I am not overly knowledgeable of what may or may not have bern spoken of in the canon HP, but Hogwart's is one of the smallest of the school's represented. Durmstrangs and Beauxbatons being a bit bigger as well. I am going on the fundamental assumption that a certain percentage of the world's population is magical like with genetic drift. Some pockets have higher concentrations of the trait and others less. There would also be slight variations in it. However, since it is magic, I admit to some small epiphenomenal McGuffins in there. We might think Celtic backgrounds are more mystical but then so are Austrian Aboriginals and Tibetans and such, yeah? Anyway, I don't think about it too much and IC chatter is a lot of fun too! Will be moving things along in a few days, so chat on the train!

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
I have a quick question before I do another post because it is going to be very relevant at least to Serena. Is the locket giving that Bao-Yu and Beth is talking about a SWI thing or is it something new for Hogwarts?

I just don't want her to ask about it if she has already been involved with it before and that seems bad form...very bad form.

I could also see something like that for Beauxbatons Academy of Magic as well though maybe with a bracelet or anklet made of a very fine metal. Maybe even an impervius enchanted bit of ivy or the like shaped into a bracelet or anklet. Might even be something that is given between friends.

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
The locket ceremony is from SWI and is their sorting ceremony. Most but not all schools have a sorting ceremony like Hogwarts. Mahotokorou, for instance, has no sorting as much as a recruitment event where students chose their dorms, which aee different from houses. Anyway, up to those of various schools to determine what ceremony if any occurs for sorting. I am open to discuss it. I know how Kunlun and Mahotokorou work so far.

I will admit that I'm getting a bit worried about Claire/Kiri.  She hasn't checked in since October.

Yeah, Claire is MIA since October and Athene is MIA since December. It's not a great set of circumstances. Hmm, also no one has responded to the Hogwarts school performances either in appreciation, except Amanda, or to add their details, Serena, so I'll give it another 24 hours.

Sorry for being so slow and I have just been fighting a lot of real life stuff at the moment. I do hope that my post is what was being looked for as I was a bit unsure what exactly was needed.

And I'm back.  Been bumming around since December and dealing with family stuff.  Wasn't checking RPoL, so my bad.

Good thing we have FB then! Hehe! Face book is good for some things at least! Glad we are going again. Wish I coukd reach out to Claire some way though. Her loss would be depressing.

Welcome back Athene.   And, I agree, since Claire has been an integral part of the group for years, it will be quite depressing to lose her now.  Hopefully, everything is alright with her.  Really, its a bit surprising when you thing about it.  We've been gaming together forever, but most of us have no way to get in touch with each other other than through RPOL.net.

True enough. Anyone here is a friend to me! It has been 5 years or so... So if you want to find me on FB or my personal email, feel free to ask. I won't make it public though!

Sure lets do Pauman next then. After them is Beauxbatons and Durmstrangs then Mahotokorou, Uagadou, and SWI. Anyone want to volunteer to handle Beauxbatons. Durmstrangs is mine though...

Asuka's post is awesome! Now, I was waiting for a few comments from the stands on it before we moved on... Will post for James tonight.

Will move on to the next performance soon after that.

Excellent. Egg salad!

Okay, I will try to have the Beauxbaton's post up soon. Then Durmstrang's after a reasonable period... whichever group I said was after that, please start strategizing.

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
So, it has been a couple of months and I have been busy getting engaged and working a tonne of overtime, which is no excuse but a reason for my absence. Another part of this was that Claire had not been logging in... That was a serious problem.

As of today, she has been gone for over 6 months... that is a worse situation...

As my player will know, Claire was a major piece of my plot that I was getting through slowly, like molasses... I know, I know, better slow than never. We are all adults with lives who prioritize things well.. mostly. So, that pace never bothered me as the group we have here has been a cornerstone of my life for... 5 years now? However, without Claire, we are at a crux. I just cannot fathom finishing the plot I have without her and I am more or less opposed to farming her character out. Claire's player is a friend and is free to come back at any time that suits her. She will always be welcomed.

However, this leaves me with what to do next.. I present the options:

1) I can  muddle through this year slowly trying to figure out how to repair the story line or running Claire on autopilot. (not my favorite desire.)

2) I can wrap the year up quickly and move us to year 5 which would give me a lot more freedom to alter story lines.

3) We can do a major time-skip to year 7 or beyond. This is the most latitude for me to rewrite the story and provide some fresh motivation for players.

Anyway, let's see how others feel about the crisis and what people would like to do about it. If any of the above options are straight out for you, let me know what you would prefer.

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
First, congratulations on your engagement.  She is getting a great GM and a great guy.

Second, I am pleased to see that the game hasnít died after all.  After all of this time, I would have been sorry to see it end.

My preference would be option two.  Iíve been looking forward to year five for quite some time now and even have an admittedly minor thing relating to the upcoming OWLs that I started planning well over a year ago.

My only concern about the time skip would be how it would affect the players of our characters from the visiting schools.  Of course, since quite a few of them havenít checked in for quite some time, that may be a minor issue at best.  It should be easy enough to bring Asuka in if sheís the only new player still here.

The overall plan may depend on which players are still here.  Obviously Asuka and I are.  And, a quick check of last login times shows Robert is still around as well.  Hopefully, we still have Athene as well.  I know sheís vital for the overall plot.  Serena, Jade, Ganah, Shimazu are any of you still around?

That would put Asuka in 7th year, so working on NEWTs. I'm sure she could have found a reason to stay.

And I know Jade's back on the site, but said it'll be next week or so until she's really available.

I am around as well and more than willing to continue. As for which choice I like the most....I would have to go with #2 first and then #3 if that is not feasible. I was actually having fun getting into Serena's skin and she is a fun character.

Count me in and pull me into whatever trouble that you want too.

Of course everyone gets a vote. Anyone who wanted was going to be welcome to continue after year 4... obviously.

Hmm, I am going to bug/wait for Athene to chime in before final decisions.

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
You probably have already thought of something.  But, if not, I do have an idea for how we could temporarily write out Claire and Kiri for fifth year or longer.  According to the article in the Daily Prophet, the international cultural exchange event was supposed to be reoccurring and taking place in a different country each year.  Claire and Kiri could be selected as some of the Hogwarts representatives for next year and sent to which ever country the event will be taking place in.  If/When Claireís player returns, the characters could be sent back due to issues that occurred overseas.

Also, do you happen to remember the name of the rule light system that you were using in your Percy Jackson game and that was used in the other Percy Jackson game that we were in together.  I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm going to get nudged into running again and I don't want to deal with the Hero system or something similar.

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
I don't know the PJ games, but I know Window is rules light and works well. It's what a couple of HP games I'm in (The one that led me here) use.

And that's a great idea for writing people out for a time.

I'll just have to come up with a reason for Asuka to stay. And what house she'd be in.

Oh, that is a very good idea! Better than what I had! Hehe.

As for that game, I recall the system vaguely and tecLl adoring it but don't remember the name. I tried finding it but couldn't. I can try some more though. P

I asked the friend who ran the original game and she said it was a home brew variant of Wu Shu system. I might have to adapt it as well. I am itching for a new gAme myself as I let most of my other games lapse.

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
It has been around a year now. I am not sad about it. This game has been a jewel in my gaming career and the people who were with me are all considered friends. Truly, this game has been a great joy and I am not sad how it ended. That said, it is done. I don't have the space or mentality to keep going. This is the official notice that I will delete the game in one week. Grab or ask for whatever information you want from it.

It is a sad thing to see the game close but I completely understand at the same time. I was new to the group but what little I did get to play, it was a blast. Hope to see many or all of you in other games. *hugs all around*

Re: OOC part the fourth part (or is it fifth?)
Actually, since we will never find out in game, I do have a couple of questions:

1.  James was the son of Harry and Hermione, correct?

2.  Was Athene related to Voldemort, if so how?  If not, was she related to someone else significant?

3.  The journal that Kiri got from the house elf was written by Hermione, but if I remember correctly, it seemed as though there was a comment in the back that might have been written by someone else.  Who had been in possession of the journal and what was the story there?

4.  I assume there was going to be a prophecy associated with us in your game.  If so, what was it?

5.  Are there any other cool things that you wish weíd gotten the chance to learn in game?

Iím sure Iím forgetting things I had wondered about but as you said, itís been close to a year and Iím reluctant to try rereading 8,301 posts.
