Well, there are better chance in 2020 than there were previously. Some investments have paid off (just sold some real estate) that I'll be cashing in in March. It's enough money to start working less at the job and more on my own projects... <3

What's everyone else up to? Mirax, you said you reinvented your career ?

Chemosh, still riding the waves?

Anyone else hosting games? Eso? Kal? Tehrk? Wassup with you!?

I've been on https://www.DarkJediBrotherhood.com lately.

In progress, but yup!  Currently in training to be an Air Traffic Controller.  Provided I don't suck ass, I'll get to the on-the-job portion this summer sometime, then another year to licensing.  Then the gravy train begins.

RPOL is still my only RP site, and I've scaled back on active games.  But if this one were to ever pick back up (or another SW game with this group) I would make room for it!

Things are a little different in Canada I think, there wasn't a math exam for me, so much as a battery of aptitude and 'answer as many as you can in X minutes' questions.  Lots of perception and spatial recognition stuff.  Certainly was tough and took a while... Like 2 years from the first online test to the final in person boot camp and training offer.

Transferred back to the mainland this past Summer... it was a rough three years living in Puerto Rico (no sarcasm intended), my new duty station is by and far the lowest tempo job that I’ve EVER had.

I play D&D... x4 days a week on Roll20. Same group of friends, four different games (each with a different GM, mine is Sunday evenings). That’s been my primary outlet.

Been considering checking out the local gaming store on a Sunday afternoon, it’s got a huge MtG crowd Friday nights (I’ve gone twice witha coworker that plays)... and they supposedly host Adventure League game(s) on Sundays. Just haven’t been terribly motivated to leave my house on the weekends!

I play in two games here on RPOL. Very much leaning towards running a D&D 5e game here in the near future...

OOC - 2020

I went from a decent handful of games to one active game now... Attrition based issues mostly.

One was a freeform Bleach game that was going pretty well all things considered, then the drop off happened.

From April until September, I was unemployed. Got a job working at a casing and tubing factory in town and been there for the past while. I'm finished my probationary time this Thursday though, so that'll be a nice bonus to finally get some medical coverage and such. Scheduling is a bit rough, given the 12 hour shifts and 2-2-3 rotations.

Game wise, however, nothing beyond a freeform X-men rpg at this point. Good group of people there. I've been tempted to try my hand at something, but I either lack the books for anything I'm confident with and the books I do have are things that most people likely don't have or are too convoluted to bother with. Just good to be back to even just an OOC posting with another good group of people.

Given my current circumstances, I can't complain too loudly. Kids are still alive and well enough, though the things they've lost out on over the last 12 months they'll never get back. My work has been insanely busy. But unlike some in industries that have been more significantly impacted by COVID, I'm still employed, so no real complaints there. I search for the silver linings every day of the pandemic, and I've discovered quite a few. It's still been an overall negative, but little positives have softened the blow of the big negative.

My theory, though, is that dogs somehow manufactured this thing. My doggos have never been happier. They are now the most spoiled creatures on earth.

Of all the negative things that happened with Covid, my silver lining is that my bosses have seen that I can work remotely without an issue. That being the case I am going to be relocating in May. I am leaving the Wet Coast and heading east to New Brunswick.

Air Traffic Control, up in Canada.  They still seem to have it in their heads up in the head office that traffic will take years to return, when thr FAA is already recalling trainees and air traffic in North America is already back to 2019 levels.  Thats an average for North America, which includes a shut down Canada - so basically, the States is up by an appreciable percentage, and we will be the moment the gates open.

Blah.

Anyway, I'm down for a game!  Don't have any familiarity with anything other than Saga though.

Games for me have mostly been freeform as of late, mostly because I work full time now at a hospital. Put in a bid for permanent full time, so I'd have a pretty full schedule, but nothing too unreasonable.

That said, game wise, the one that stood out the most for me was a SAO game that was semi-freeform. The GM ran all the mechanics behind the scene, but it was way too much for one person and it died out.

I'd be down for anything. If it's going to need books, I may need hunt down pdf's or the like, depending on what's decided on.

Hey! I applied for that job *years* ago..! Loved the math under pressure aspect of it... LOL -- good luck, hopefully they'll get going again soon.

To Everyone:

I've been working on a Mando game concept, where the Clans are splintered between an Imperial-controlled Mandalore clan that wants to keep the power in the current Mandalore's hands, vs the other clans trying to get back to the old ways, where the Mandalore works for the clans, and not the clans for the Mandalore.

We could also pick-up where we left off in this game.

Re: OOC - 2020

Definitely an EU/'Legends'/Classic Star Wars person myself.  If it's a choice between that and anything involving Disney's canon, I'll take the former everytime.  The Mandalorian was excellent... but it treads that line close, heh.

Alterverses and such are basically the EU at this point, so that'd get my vote.  Doesn't have to mean we continue this game, but it'd get my vote.

Also, while the Mando idea is neat, I've personally thought Mandalorians are best used in moderation, like one member of a player party or some NPC interactions now and then.  Focusing entirely on the Mandalorians forces you to pick which sort of Mando Lore you like, since even before Disney came to the party there were two schools - the Warrior Way, as shown in the EU post-NJO books with Boba becoming Mandalore... and the Clone Wars, weird Aristocratic society thing that Clone Wars turned them into.  Really wasn't my cup of tea to basically have the classic 'honorbound Mandos' turned into the evil Deathwatch and led by whoever holds the dumbest Star Wars artifact around.

But, I recognize there's folks that enjoy it, and honestly it's good stuff.  Just doesn't feel like Mandalorians to me.  I feel like it would've been better as their own thing, rather than making them Mandos to draw on the Fett cred.

....

Long rant over - honestly I'll go with whatever gets us a Star Wars game in the end.  I have characters that can work for either scenario, and I *do* love me some Mando stuff.  I also know you, Darkside, and I know you know what you're doing.  The Mando concept actually does sound good, and my rant isn't directed at that but well, just me being a bitter classic SW fan, haha.  The character I play in that one would definitely be down to kick some Imperial-appointed Mandalore's ass.

Mando:

I want to get back to the older Mando roots, vs "this is the way" we saw from the Mandalorian. While I enjoyed the Mandalorian, it came dangerously close at getting annoying. Luckily, they brought out the other Mandos, and had him soften his stance.

I was actually planning on redrawing the Mando closer to RotJ, with imperial remnants still exerting power over certain systems, with the Alliance having to dismantle things.

Game Vote:

What I'll do, I guess... is write an intro to the Mando scenario I was thinking of. Basing myself on the ancient (now extinct) race that gave us the Mando'a Creed, etc. I'm also a Poli Sci/History buff, and I like stories where people have to choose a camp (good or bad), and then re-evaluate.

And I'll also "recap" where we are in this game.

Then we'll put it to a vote..?

How's Level 10 for everyone?

So by going back to the older Mando roots, you mean more akin to the EU than what Bo Katan & Co want to restore - that being... king of a normalish aristocratic world?  Or whatever.

I could get behind it though.

Anyway, a vote works for me if you like.  I'm gonna have to seriously refresh myself with Saga but that shouldn't be *too* much trouble.  The books are in storage but I think I have PDFs somewhere...

Regarding level 10... at what level do the Prestige Classes kick in?  Is it like level 6 where you can first take levels in one I think?  Or 7?  Can't remember.

As for a game, I'm down, but I'd be flying blind on any actual lore-related stuff and the likes. I'm down to do what I can and to be involved, but it's a long shot for me to be able to really follow along with anything story-wise.

Re: OOC - 2020

Well, if the timeline is ROTJ or just post ROTJ, then the Mandos can be classified in two categories: Bounty Hunters/Mercenaries, or farmers and former slaves.  My memory's not great but during the Empire, Mandalore was basically strip mined by the Empire, its people largely sold into slavery, while the Mando warriors that weren't there during the occupation made their own way, like Boba Fett and such (though most view him as a sort of 'fake' Mandalorian; dude didn't even have proper Beskar armor).

From the sounds of it, our GM's aiming more for Classic than New Disney, so I can hopefully help with any Lore stuff.

Dibs on the Blademaster though, if we go that route.  Otherwise, happy to continue with Mirax!

Heck no... it was a clan-elected Mandalore, the clans came together, and chose a Mandalore. This is old old old stuff... I don't exactly remember where I read that, but it was around the time Timothy Zahn wrote stuff.

Clans were family clans, so most folks would be around Grandpa as the clan head, respecting their elders, some would push Grandpa off a cliff, and force a vote for the clan leadership; but clan leaders chose a Mandalore  (when one was needed), there were periods that had no Mandalore at all.

Normally, one was chosen when the need was dire, and that someone managed to impress the clans to unify towards a common goal.

I provide the lore, there was very little written about the Mandos to begin with, and I won't be using Disney.

Mirax would be correct that at the time of RotJ, we'd have Mercs or farmers/slaves... and yes the planet Madalore was also raped for its resources by the Empire.

If we go Mando, I'm not expecting everyone to be Mando..

I guess that depends on how rule-heavy you'd want to go. I can imagine various starfighter rules can require a lot of rolls and that doesn't seem ideal for RPOL. If more narrative/story-based, it could be a lot of fun. I thoroughly enjoyed the X-Wing books written by Stackpole back in the day.

This was the main problem I ran into.  There's a lot of rolls involved and, most importantly, it's all grid-based, so you have to do a lot of map shenanigans.  I'd love a Starfighter game, but space combat in Saga always felt best done more narratively, with rolls and skill checks spliced in rather than using the grid section, at least when doing it on RPOL.

Could definitely be made to work though.  As Kal says the X-Wing novels are awesome fun.

Lol. I ran one a while back that was centered on a squadron of TIE pilots, and it completely fell apart. Making the maps was so difficult for me at the time.

It had seemed to do well, but yeah, it required several people to be pretty consistent, and other than me being a crap DM, the players weren't really up for the basically one round of combat a week in a 5v5 starfighter battle. And that was just TIE/ln's vs X-wings.

I actually got to meet Stackpole at a con a few years ago. Super chill at the con and just a cool dude.

I'll be straight with you I would *kill* for a Starfighter type of game with an Ace Combat inspired plot - not specifically driven by it, but with that level of like... machismo and hero worship and shit, with awesome setpiece battles and probably a superweapon or two involved.

Which really isn't all that unlike the X-Wing novels, or most of Rogue Squadron's career honestly.

I could, in theory, add more such combat to this game if we wanted to revisit. It was rather busy with screenshots though!!

Re: OOC - 2020

Found it:

Double Agent

When you roll Initiative at the beginning of combat, also roll a Deception check, comparing the result to the Will Defense of all enemies in line of sight. If your Deception check is successful, that target cannot attack you and does not believe you to be an enemy (Though they do not consider you an ally) while this effect is active.

If you attack or otherwise obviously harm or hinder a target under the effect of this Talent, or one of that target's allies, this effect ends. This is a Mind-Affecting effect.

1) The Rakghouls don't consider you an enemy, but you're not one of them either, so you look like lunch!

2) They're immune to mind affects.

Walk the Line

Prerequisite: Disruptive

As a Standard Action, you can do or say something that catches your enemies off guard. All opponents within 6 squares of you, and within your line of sight take a -2 penalty to their Defenses until the start of your next turn. The penalty is negated if line of sight is broken. This Talent has a range of 6 squares at Starship Scale.

I believe this is active though. You can baffle them, and I did consider the -2 on defenses.

But in summary, you got to Dr. Nils office, the group split up, Chemosh wanting to slice through the database from there, and possible because he's fickle and didn't care to follow the group to save his own skin.

Eso stayed behind to protect him, while you folks decided to make the dangerous trek down to the labs to get the cure, but someone's in the lab, and Chemosh has been keeping them locked out of the system.

Re: OOC - 2020

From my experience in creating characters that exploit sneak attacks, you normally need to do a stealth check to do a sneak attack on someone to catch them flat footed, irrc. You do get a +2 bonus for total concealment.

Flat-Footed
In any battle that begins with a Surprise Round, you start the battle Flat-Footed. You remain Flat-Footed until your first regular turn in the Initiative Order. You can't apply your Dexterity bonus (If any) to your Reflex Defense while Flat-Footed.

There are talents and feats that allow you to force the opponent into being flat-footed; generally in the Scoundrel/Noble mind affecting talents. For example:

You excel at deceiving others with your tricks and masterful Feint in combat.

Prerequisite: Trained in Deception

Effect: You can spend two successive Swift Actions on the same turn to make a Deception check against a target's Will Defense. If the check is successful, the target is Flat-Footed against your next attack made before the end of your next turn. Additionally, you can spend a Force Point to extend your target's penalties until the end of encounter.

Re: OOC - 2020

Here's one nice example from the Assassin Prestige Class:

Assassin Talent Tree - Mark

As an Assassin, you specialize in the sudden attack- the brutal stroke that eliminates your target by the fastest means possible. At the start of the encounter, you can select a single target within your line of sight to be your Mark. For the duration of the encounter, you gain a bonus equal to one-half your Class Level (Rounded down) on damage rolls against that opponent. This damage is in addition to the character's usual level bonus to damage. This damage is doubled on a successful Critical Hit, as normal. If you reduce your target to 0 Hit Points, you may place your Mark on another target within line of sight as a Free Action.

As a Swift Action, you can sacrifice this bonus to render your target Flat-Footed against your next attack made before the end of your turn. Once you sacrifice this bonus, it is lost for the remainder of the encounter.

I thought Recover was 3 swift actions?  Is there a talent that reduces that?

Correct, I banked it earlier. Used 1/3 in the last round, used 2/3 this round.

Though with Jaela's shot... I'm exactly where I started. LOL

Recover

3 Swift Actions

You can spend three Swift Actions in the same Round or across consecutive Rounds to move +1 step on the Condition Track. You cannot use the Recover Action while afflicted by a Persistent Condition.

Ohh, that's how that works.  Interesting!

Speaking of, the Persistent Condition thing.  Would the virus we were hit with count for that, since it's a progressive worsening?  Could we recover a bit on the condition?

Re: OOC - 2020

k!

So, ESO: I will be getting you some action soon. I'm thinking Skill challenge to get to the ship.

Kal, your turn if you want to give me one on the combat thread. General lines would be fine if you want.

Those of you who wish to re-tweak characters, can do so. You should all be level 6 characters for now. I don't want changes in names/history, etc, but you can rejigger your characters.

We will continue with E3 of this campaign, as I finish drafting my other one. The summer months should give me some time to finish drafting a first few missions.

Re: OOC - 2020

What do you want to know?

1) Self-destruct was initiated by the Station's security protocols, it was meant as a failsafe to ensure that there would be no proof left of the research or the specimen on board.

2) with the damage sustained by the station, it is now in decaying orbit, and now perilously close to being torn by Taris' gravity pull

3) the self-destruct ISN'T what is going to kill everyone on board, rather it's the stations structural integrity which is deteriorating quicker than expected.

As someone who's basically used nothing but Move Object at this point... mechanically it would work, just have to hit the DC for a Medium Object, heh.  You're also limited by the distance, since you can only move him... 12 squares I believe?

Just checked, Medium object DC is 15. Since Use the Force is a skill and you don't auto-fail skills on a 1 that means that my lowest is a 16. As long as he is willing I can lob him around. :)

This next stretch is rather long, and under extreme structural stress. You can tow him along as you go, but these "structural" defects are many and I still need to roll for them while you hold him.

My awesome accuracy skills don't do much against bulkheads. There's some weird protective mechanism I can't work my way around by shooting at it.

I did suggest the schematics though, which if there are any, I could make a skill check to go over those with some help for point-of-reference and such.

Re: OOC - 2020

Hi folks! Haven't forgotten about the game, just busy with family vacations, etc.

Noticed this contest on the SWSE Rules Wiki for any of you who love creating characters. The next contest is about Force Users that are NOT Sith or Jedi. So if you have an interesting character concept that you don't mind posting on the wiki for everyone to use in their campaigns (you get the bragging rights if you win, but either way you get your work added to the Wiki), the next contest will start Aug 1: https://swse.fandom.com/wiki/FEARLESS_FORCE_FRINGERS

Currently votes are being tallied on the Super Sneaky Character Types until tomorrow.

You will need to create a wiki account (free) if you want to participate/vote.

Can't do much GMing myself, in part because I'm no good at it, at least for system-based games.
