World Data

Espiaux – Nestled deep within its primary’s jump shadow, Espiaux is poorly lit by the dim red light of its dying star.  A moon in orbit around the large gas giant Chaumeys, Espiaux is tidelocked.  Additionally, the atmosphere of this ancient world is oxygen deficient, but ozone rich.  Tidally locked in orbit around a large gas giant, temperatures are chilly and local life non-existent.  Given the worlds extensive drawbacks, one may wonder why it was colonized at all.   However, the tidal stresses caused by Chaumeys, the gas giant, and extensive deposits of valuable minerals made colonization worthwhile by settlers who didn’t mind the planet’s remote location.  Even now, most residents live in isolated undersea habitats.  Espiaux has the most advanced technology of any planet in the sector and exports exquisite cuttlefin, a seafood delicacy, though the inhabitants are famous for their reclusiveness.

Largen Stations 1 & 2 – As Espiaux and Savigny are located so deep within the jump shadow of Espiaux’s star, the government of Espiaux has constructed two 1000ton deep space stations near the stellar 100d limit.  Reflective of Espiaux’s paranoia, even these stations are located several days within the jump shadow.  Ostensibly this provides system defenses an extra measure of warning.  Very few spacers refer to the stations by their official names, Largen Solar Orbital Station 1 and Largen Solar Orbital Station 2, calling them Box 1 & 2 instead.  Box 1 is over one hundred years old and is becoming less reliable and increasing difficult to maintain.  Box 2 is almost fifty years old.  The majority of commercial activity has been moved from Box 1, leaving it primarily used as a resupply and refueling depot and support station for the Navy.  Box 2 hosts commercial operations.  Large sections of the station have been given over to warehousing, but rates are very high.  Eight 400ton systemships from ESL do the bulk of station to planet transfers.

Savigny - Savigny is a small, Mars-sized world circling close to the gas giant Chaumeys.  It is also tidelocked.  Temperatures on the inner face tend to be hot, and radiation from Chaumeys scours the inner face.  Consequently, in contrast to Espiaux, almost all the population of Savigny lives on the outer face.  Heating on the inner face generates cyclical wind patterns, resulting in near frequent high-speed wind storms.  On the outer face, weather tends to be hot, 30-35C, in areas exposed to the wind, but much cooler in valleys and other protected areas.  Gravity is a low 0.55G and atmospheric pressure is 0.88 bar.  Despite the climate and relative scarcity of water, Savigny is able to support some forms of agriculture. It also has moderate mineral resources, which are more easily extractable than on Espiaux.

Politics

Espiaux and Savigny combined control less than one third of the seats in parliament.  Yet espite having a much lower population than Alsace, Espiaux wields political power beyond its size.  As the seat of government for the Free Republic, the tenor of government is influenced heavily by Espian mores.  Parliament is also located on Espiaux.  An Espian, Zoe Puzegi, formerly a Lieutenant Commander in the Free Republic Navy and a veteran of the Battle of Vauclain, is serving as Chancellor.  Currently, three parties are represented: Liberty Party (right), People’s Alliance (centrist), and the Free Social Party (left).  Liberty has the largest block in parliament with over 48% of the seats and rules in a coalition with Alliance (14%), while the opposition is the FSP (38%). The far right IRP has failed to garner the minimum five percent for the last two elections.  Next elections are due in the spring of 5742 (every five years).

Culture

The effect of the Plague on Espiaux was to make an already reclusive and xenophobic society more so.  Espiaux avoided the most serious effects of the Plague, suffering less economic dislocation and suffering than most worlds.  The effect of generations of wealth has been to give many Espiauxers a deep seated sense of their own superiority.  Most Espiauxers hold the Navy in high regard and the FRN draws many of its recruits and much of its support in parliament from Espiaux.

Colonization

Savigny is underpopulated and the population of Espiaux is only growing slowly.  Therefore, there is little colonization pressure.

Economics

Espiaux has the highest technological base and one of the largest WDP in the sector.  Espiaux is very concerned about the loss of its technological advantage and has placed strict controls on the export of high technology goods.  Fishing and aquafarming are a modest portion of the economy by employment.  Research, health care, and other high skill sectors are well represented.  Alsace and Espiaux form the largest trading partnership in the sector.  Ozawa Lines also maintains a trading route to Ozawa/Vauclain, and from there into Halowon Empire space.

Industries

Carcillo Technologies – Carcillo is a leader in health care technology and medical equipment.  Its pharmaceutical arm also does very well.

Dupont Bank – A public venture, Dupont Bank is the largest financial institution in the Free Republic, with branches on Svetlana, Halowon, Somerset, Tupolev, Perseus, and Chelou as well.

Espiaux General Armaments – EGA is a leader in the defense industry and the largest supplier to the Free Republic’s military.

Espiaux System Lines – Once a fledgling intrastellar transport company, ESL opened it’s doors on Savigny in 5701.  It won an important subsidy from the government of Espiaux to build and purchase boats, at cost, at Espiaux Naval Shipyard, for the express purpose of providing passenger and freight service within the Espiaux system.  Work on the first two shuttles for ESL began in early 5702.  It has since grown into one of the largest merchant concerns in the sector.

Gateway Multimedia – A leader in all forms of entertainment, Gateway is known sector wide for its high quality productions.  Gateway News Agency (GNA) is the leading source of news reports in the sector.  Due to lack of a formal courier service, reports are still not as timely as desired.  Gateway also owns Galaxy Computer Concepts, a leader in the personal computer and multimedia markets.  There is some speculation Galaxy may try to break into mainframe computers in the near future.

Naval Shipyard of Espiaux – Publicly owned, the Free Republic government is the shipyard’s largest shareholder.  The shipyard is the largest orbital yard in the sector.  To date its only customers have been the Free Republic Navy and Ozawa Lines.

Ozawa Lines – An incredible success story, Ozawa Industries was the life work of CEO Morgan Ozawa.  Ozawa is the largest merchant company in the Halowon sector and maintains a fleet of seventeen ships, eight of which are jump-2 capable.

Vanguard Aerodynamics – Sole proprietor of Vanguard Fighter Yards, which started manufacturing light Orbital defense fighters for planets in the Halowon sector almost two hundred years ago.  Although the company has been through many iterations and a wide variety of management styles over the years, ownership has remained within the Silversted family throughout the company’s history.  The current CEO, Lucia Silversted, 42, is an accomplished small boat pilot and businesswoman who took over management of the company when her father retired last year.  Unlike Kurth and Sons Yards, Vanguard receives no government support, nonetheless manages to turn a steady profit.  Lucia’s father used the profits to diversify the companies holdings, which means Vanguard is in a good position to survive slumps in the shipbuilding market.  Lucia, however, is re-investing in Vanguard Yards itself with a mind to increase production rates in anticipation of an upsurge in demand.  Vanguard produces all light fighters in Free Republic service.

Other smaller corporations exist, including: Free Republic Factors, CETI, Joan D’Arc Ventures, Souev Investments, etc.

Shipyards

The largest orbital shipyard in the sector, NSE is in geosynchronous orbit over Espiaux.  The yards largest drydocks are in the 2000ton class.  The yard is bulding new frigates at the rate of one per year as well as smaller naval vessels and an occasional bulk carrier for Ozawa Lines.

Military

Espiaux has a military presence befitting the capital of the Free Republic.  The Free Republic Navy’s 1st Combat Squadron, 1st Transport Squadron, 1st  and 3rd Scout Squadrons and two Espiaux Defense Squadrons are based there.  Additionally, the Free Republic Pathfinder Service is headquartered on Espiaux.

System Defense forces include six powerful Zeitlin Class, 1000ton SDBs, several Kirin Class, 300ton, SDBs and three wings of fighters.  Savigny also bases a wing of fighters.  The 3rd and 5th fighter wings are equipped with Hellcats, which form the backbone of Free Republic COACC forces, while the 1st wing has upgraded to new Piranha fighters.

Only a handful of Army units are on Espiaux, but Savigny maintains one grav division.
