Re: Vicinity of Box 2 (Espiaux) 002-5742

Jack nods as the Holly closes the comm-link. "We can do that," he murmurs to Lafleur as Hayden enters the bridge.

Jack chuckles slightly at Hayden's barely concealed hurting. "That's good news, Mr. Marks. I suppose we'll take that to Box 2, no? After we take care of Mr. Lafleur here, of course."

Jack starts a small flurry of activity at his console, pinging Dagala and checking status displays on the launch. "Here's what I propose: Ms. Moreau, hold Gypsy Moth no closer to Holly than 3,500 km. I'll fly Mr. Lafleur and his men over to inspect Holly in the launch. Ms. Aksina can accompany me and we'll both be armed. Mr. Marks will prep for cargo transfer and everyone else will remain at stations. Doctor, you'll have the bridge... unless you'd rather go find Mr. Jinx," he finishes with a friendly grin.

He looks around at the crew. "Any questions? Or suggestions?"

"What? Yeah. Yeah, its all good," Jim replies absentmindedly, with a wave of acknowledgement.  Its not quite clear who he is responding to.

He continues scanning the security cam feeds, but the others can see that he has been paying attention as he opens two other views.

One view displays station status for the ship, which Jim puts a finger to and verifies the manned and safed status of the turrets*.  The other he uses to allocate a dedicated comm channel for the launch.

"I've never left Mr. Jinx on his own during a docking, is all..."

Re: Vicinity of Box 2 (Espiaux) 002-5742

Danica gave Hayden a thumbs-up, adding, "Copacetic, Mr. Marks."  Her tone is quiet, knowing that Hayden would likely not appreciate anything louder.

She glanced at Jack and nodded, "I agree, Mr. Kevaloh.  I'll hold the Moth in position until you return."  She, of course, left it open as to who would be returning with him, as well as who he wanted to take - Dagala was a fine choice.

Dani pretty much ignores the doctor's search for his cat.  Jinx can take care of herself.  And Danica is pretty sure that as long as the cat doesn't get on the Launch, they will be fine.  Actually, if the cat gets on the Launch, Danica is still sure that things will be fine (in general - for the cat, perhaps not so much).

In reply to Danica Moreau (msg #17):

Presuming someone informs Dagala of the plan, she responds, "Aye, aye.  I am proceeding to the ship's locker briefly and from there to the launch."

Lafleur, Gomez, and Diehl meet Jack and Dagala at the lounge entrance to the launch.  Lafleur is wearing a discrete sidearm, while Gomez has a combat shotgun and Diehl and heavy pistol at his hip.  All three have cloth armor.

Aksina is wearing an armortec crew coat in Corvus colors (neither she nor the other NPCs have Moth uniforms yet) and has a snub pistol in a shoulder holster.  Any other weapons she might have are concealed.

OOC: Jack, just for fun, how about a routine (+2) piloting check to undock and another to dock on Holly.

Re: Vicinity of Box 2 (Espiaux) 002-5742

Jack is checking the emergency functions of both his crewcoat and Dagala's when Lafleur and his men show up.

"Dagala, could you see to the men getting settled while I start the flight pre-lim? Thank you."

Once cleared by Box 2 and Danica, Jack eases the launch away from it's mother ship.

15:22, Today: Jacques Keveloh rolled 12 using 2d6+4. Routine Pilot (DEX) - undock launch.

"Gypsy 2 clear,"
he says needlessly to Danica and slips the tiny ship into a vector at port velocity toward the Holly.

He keeps an ear to the small talk on the port frequencies and tags the Holly, the Moth and the Zeitlin class SDB for sensor alerts if they make any movement or their weapons signatures change. "Danica, I know you will... but let us know if anything odd happens." As Gypsy 2 slides through the vacuum he turns to Lafleur. "Please stay in your couches until we have positive lock. You may muster at the airlock after that. Ms. Aksina will open the airlock when systems show greenlight status. We will stay on Gypsy 2 unless there is some reason you need us to board Holly."

15:41, Today: Jacques Keveloh rolled 12 using 2d6+4 with rolls of 5,3. Rout. Pilot (DEX) - dock launch to Holly.

Jack stands behind Lafleur's men as Dagala waits for the airlock to cycle green.

Re: Vicinity of Box 2 (Espiaux) 002-5742

In reply to Jacques Keveloh (msg #19):

Jack makes piloting the launch out from under Gypsy Moth's chin turrets look ridiculously easy.  With the three security personnel strapped in and Aksina standing and holding firmly to handgrips, Jack navigates the few thousand kilometers between the ships swiftly.

An aging 400ton sissy, Holly's hull has been through hundreds of reentrys.  Her rudimentary sensor panels look worn and the yellow and blue ESL logo on her tail is fading.  Holly and her sisterships have one remarkable feature, though, the outsized thrusters which propel them at 4G.  This allows them to cross the vast distance to Chaumeys in about half the time of slower ships.

Jack docks the launch's dorsal iris valve to Holly's dorsal airlock smoothly.  It makes the transition between vessels slightly awkward as the group climbs up through the valve, then down as gravity pulls the other way on the Holly side.  Everyone manages without incident, though.  Exiting the sissy's airlock, you find yourself in small a lounge of sorts.

The group is met by three persons.  The first, a wiry thirty-something with close-cropped hair and a Dupont security uniform, is having his fingerprints and retina scanned by Lafleur.  Presumably he is Hollweg.  He is the only one of the three who appears armed, with a laser pistol in a holster and wearing cloth armor.

The second is a mid-twenties woman in a conservative business suit and heels.  She seems happy and relaxed, like she's on a tour, and introduces herself with a smile as Joanne Rooks, a junior manager for Dupont Bank on Espiaux.

The third is a an elderly gent in worn spacer's coveralls.  He has a gentle, but competent mien and introduces himself in a surprisingly liquid voice as, "John Wisecup, Holly's *Master.  Welcome aboard."

* a title preferred to captain by some merchants.

From the limited exposure you have had so far, having only seen the airlock and lounge, Holly's appointments appear to be utilitarian and somewhat outmoded, but clean and orderly. Gomez and Diehl have seperated and placed themselves in positions to cover both exits to the lounge, but you hear Diehl mutter, "Guess we're back in coach."

If Wisecup overhears he does not show any signs of it.  He states to Lafleur and Jack, "Cargo Bay 1 is empty and ready for your shipment.  Cargo Bays 2 and 3 hold general cargo and are secured.  We have six souls onboard, four crew, Ms. Rooks, and Mr. Hollweg.  My First Officer is on the bridge, one crewmember is in engineering, and our deckhand is in the forward cargo bay.  You are welcome to inspect anything you see fit and myself and my crew are standing by to assist in any way necessary."

Satisfied with his identity checks, Lafleur directs Gomez and Diehl to inspect engineering, then the passenger quarters, while he and Hollweg proceed to the bridge before checking the forward cargo hold.  He asks Jack, "Would you like to come with us to the bridge?"

Jack smiles and shakes Wisecup's hand. "Jacques Keveloh, Bridge Officer of Gypsy Moth," he says politely. "This is Dagala Aksina, our Security Officer," he continues, with a gesture to Dagala.

At Lafleur's query, Jack nods in the affirmative. "We'd be honored, if Mr. Wisecup is so inclined."

Re: Vicinity of Box 2 (Espiaux) 002-5742

In reply to Jacques Keveloh (msg #21):

Aksina almost imperceptibly tilts her head in the direction of the airlock leading to the launch, "Very good, sir.  Shall I accompany you or wait here?"

It would take a determined intrusion attempt to defeat the security locks on the Launch's iris valve, but it would not be impossible given the right skills, equipment, and time. Also, the lounge would be a good, central location to physically observe movement through the ship.

On the other hand, Aksina is an extra, trained pair of eyes.

With or without Dagala, Captain Wisecup leads the group the few short meters to the bridge.  The layout of the sissy is vaguely reminiscent of a Type R Fat Trader, in that the engineering, passenger, crew, and bridge are all on an upper level, over a large cargo area running from stem to stern on the lower level.  The cargo area is divided into three distinct bays.

Holly's bridge is slightly smaller than Gypsy Moth's own.  It is also longer and narrower.  Unlike Gypsy Moth, the sissy's builders didn't put any value on craftsmanship or elegance.  Holly's bridge is purely functional.  Two control consoles are forward center on the bridge.  Two others line the port bulkhead, while a large, secure locker, presumably the ship's locker, is to starboard.  The bridge looks well lived in.  Bulletins, advisories, company policies about this or that mundane detail, and half-witty printouts have been adhesed to various vertical surfaces.  There is a quantity of loose gear that wouldn't be tolerated in the Pathfinders, but that has accumulated over time here and been wedged into various nooks in a half-hearted attempt to maintain some semblance of order.

A roughly thirtyish woman is sitting at the starboard console forward.  A cup of some steaming beverage sits near console and she has one leg up, boot resting on the console's lower edge when the group enters.  She is wearing coveralls of the same style as Wisecup, though hers are newer and less worn.  Her angular, ebon features are emphasized by her hair style.  She apparently wears the right side of her head shaved, with the remaining hair angled sharply left.  She stands and reports to the Captain, "Snell says two security guys just got to engineering, Skipper.  Also, Jerry's waiting down in the forward hold."

Jack can tell at a glance from the First Officer's display that the sissy's sensors, comms, and, well, just about everything else aren't nearly as advanced as Moth's.  A quick peek at the relative positions of Box 2, Gypsy Moth, and the SDB indicates the sissy hasn't moved since the launch docked.

One thing Hollylooks to have that Gypsy Moth doesn't is escape pods.  The display indicates ten of them, one for each stateroom.  Perhaps this is to compensate for the sissy's lack of small craft in the event of an emergency.

In a kindly voice, Wisecup introduces his First Officer, "This is Collins.  She's my right hand and the girl's second pilot.  She or I can answer pretty much any question there is to answer about Holly."

The Dupont security officer already on the sissy, Hollweg, directs by asking, "Captain, could you bring up the security camera feeds for my colleague."

"Of course Mister Hollweg", with a series of taps he has clearly performed many, many times over the years, Wisecup displays camera feeds on one of the port consoles.  Holly's camera placement appears to have been more motivated by systems and cargo monitoring concerns than actual security, but Jack and Lafleur get a good overview of the status of the various spaces on the ship.  The center cargo hold, the largest, contains mostly tank (as in liquid tank, not war machine tank) containers in the 10dton range, while the aft cargo hold is packed full of standard shipping containers of various colors.

You can see a female crewmember leading Gomez and Diehl around engineering.  A younger, obviously bored, male crewmember is leaning against the bulkhead in the small, forward cargo bay.  If Dagala waited in the lounge, she is visible alertly keeping guard.  There is no other movement visible in the cameras nor are there signs of recent damage or struggle.

Jack responds to Dagala with a minute nod of his own toward the launch. "Yes, why don't you stay here with the 2. I'm sure I'll be back shortly."

He inwardly thanked his lucky stars as the details of life aboard the Holly became apparent. Getting soft in your old age, Jack? he thought bemusedly.

"Collins, Jacques Keveloh. Sturdy looking ship you've got here."
Jack was glad to see Dagala on the monitor, showing every bit of spit-and-polish professionalism they had hired her for. He felt damn lucky to have such a good crew and a ship like the Moth.

"Mr. Wisecup, do you mind if I send a status update to the Gypsy Moth? I'd like to let my crew know how things are proceeding over here."

In reply to Jacques Keveloh (msg #24):

Collins' handshake is suprisingly strong.  She says with a grin, "Yeah, she'll get you there."

Captain Wisecup adds, "Hopefully the company will have the good sense to make Collins master of Holly once they kick me into retirement in a few years."

Although Collins doesn't seem like the shy or modest type, she ducks her head a little, "I don't know about that, Skip."

In response to Jack's request to use Holly's comms, Wisecup answers, "Certainly.  Use this comm panel here."

(OOC: At this point Jack has time to send comms, etc, as the following happen a few minutes later)

Behind Jack, Lafleur is taking care of the paperwork for the impending transfer with Hollweg and Rooks.  It seems Hollweg has everything ready.  After a quick review, Hollweg asks, "Ready to check the cargo holds?"  Lafleur nods affirmative.

A husky female voice comes over intra-ship, "Skipper, the Dupont guys are done in engineering.  I'm taking them to check the staterooms now."

Wisecup answers, "Ok, thanks *Chief." *= merchie for Chief Engineer

On the cameras you can see Gomez, Diehl, and the female engineer leaving engineering, headed towards the lounge.

"Thank you, Mr. Wisecup. Gypsy Moth this Keveloh, transmitting from Holly. Docking safe, inspections continuing. Maintain current position, please. Shouldn't be long now. Respond on this channel with queries or concerns. Over."

Jack pings Dagala on his comm. "Dagala, it's Jack. Inspection's moving on from Engineering. I let Gypsy Moth know how we're doing."

Jack's gaze drifts from the monitors to Lafleur to Hollweg. This seems routine for everyone involved but Jack can't help but feel a little on edge. He was feeling a growing pride in Gypsy Moth and their work, especially when every little detail of this operation seemed filled with the potential for disaster; he was willing himself to be quiet and let these people do their own work and then it would be done. Their first successful mission. He suddenly wondered if the crew of Holly knew exactly what they were about to receive from the Moth.

"So then... "
he said to Collins. "How long's the trip in-system?"

In response to Jack's comm, Aksina replies simply, "Aye sir, thanks."

About the length of the trip, Collins answers, "A hair under sixteen days, usually.  We do two round trips plus the port time at either end.  Adds up to about three months, then the other crew comes on."  She shrugs, "Company's been good to me, there are worse gigs to be sure."  She inquires, "How about you?  I've never heard of Gypsy Moth or Blackfin before.  They new?"

Collins sizes Jack up for a moment, "You should look up Linsey off of Camille at the *Steel Beach.  She'd go for a guy like you."  As an afterthought she adds, "If you're straight."  She doesn't seem to intend to imply anything perjorative, just stating fact.

* = The Steel Beach is the name of the only bar/lounge on Box 2.  As the only leisure establishment within millions of miles, it has a hard-earned reputation for ennabling ships to pass in the night.

Lafleur and Hollweg head down to the forward cargo hold with Wisecup.  Lacking any clear directive on what she should be doing, Rooks has wandered back towards the lounge.

The female engineer, Snell, is leading Gomez and Diehl through each of the staterooms in turn.  There are no security feeds from inside the staterooms, but based on the amount of time the Dupont guards are in each one the inspection must be fairly cursory.

At Collins' query about Blackfin, Jack smiles. "Yes, brand new, in my world at least. The Moth is a pretty old ship, they've just put some make-up on her and have given her a tune-up. We operate as a specialty courier service for high-end clients." He chuckles sardonically. "Of course that means running errands for Blackfin. But, as you say, there's worse things one could do."

Jack very nearly blushes at Collins' suggestion to visit Steel Beach. "Well, thank you... good to know there's a place to unwind here. Maybe I can get our doctor to join me as my wingman." He smiles a little conspiratorial smile. "I suppose that's where we'd find the scuttlebutt as well. Half our cargo is spec so we're always looking out for who's coming and going and who needs something taken someplace."

It doesn't look like any ships have moved.

Gomez and Diehl have finished their part of the inspection and have returned to the lounge.  As you and Collins were talking, Hollweg, Lafleur, and Wisecup have made their way back to the bridge.

Lafleur announces, "I am satisfied with the arrangements here, Mr. Keveloh.  You may call Gypsy Moth and have them make their approach."

Jack leans in to the comms console. "Gypsy Moth, this is Keveloh, we are cleared for closing maneuvers immediately. Please proceed and prepare for docking with Holly's forward tube. Gypsy 2 will await your arrival then undock and fade to 50km for the transfer. Over."

Danica glances over at the Doctor for a moment.  "I am certain that Jinx is fine." she says rather soothingly.  Dani debates about whether she should tell Doc that the cat was sequestered safely in her quarters.  But she decides against it.

Instead she opts for just continuing to watch the displays as she notes, "He could hardly get into much trouble.  Here or on the Launch."  Danica prompts her physician, "Where and when was the last time you saw him?"  She makes no move to review the sensor feeds ... yet.

And then Jack's voice breaks through on a comm link, hailing the Gypsy Moth.  "Moth here.  Roger that, Mr. Keveloh." Dani acknowledges dutifully, "Bringing the ship around to the Holly's forward tube."  She checks her harness and then nudges the controls to get the Gypsy Moth on her way.  Danica glances at the various displays, "We are approaching on the following vector," and she rattles off the coordinates as they flash on the display.   "Our ETA is fifteen minutes." she informs both bridge crews.  Danica takes her time moving the Moth around; she doesn't see any reason not too - they are not in that much of a rush.

Danica eases Gypsy Moth in close to Holly.  She expertly pivots the ship to align Moth's starboard, aft cargo airlock with the sissy's nose.  Collins extends the sissy's docking tube, contacting Gypsy Moth's hull with a satisfying thunk.

Lafleur remains on Holly's bridge with Wisecup and Collins, while Hollweg, Diehl, and Gomez proceed to Holly's forward cargo hold.

Collins reports to Wisecup and Lafleur, "Pressure readings show a good seal."

As an aside to Jack, Collins quips with a bit of envy in her voice, "Well, she isn't Holly, but that's not a bad looking ship you've got there."

At Lafleur's direction, Collins comms Gypsy Moth, "Gypsy Moth, Holly, we're showing a good seal on the tube.  Ready to receive cargo."

Closely watched by Hollweg, the guards move each of Dupont's three containers from Gypsy Moth's starboard hold into Holly's hold.  Because of Lafleur and Hollweg's insistence on caution, and the guards relative unfamiliarity with cargo handling, the job takes much, much longer than it should.  For experienced trading hands like Hayden, Thera, Aksina, and others, it is maddeningly frustrating watching the guards bobble what should be a relatively routine procedure.  At one point, Nino Stern even suggests a pool on which day the guards will finish.

Finally, though, the cargo is moved and, though slow, at least the guards managed to transfer it without damaging anything on the ship.

The guards then transfer their personal belongings to the sissy.  Several of them thank you guys for your hospitality and professionalism.  The New Year's celebration has made an exceptional impression.

Holly then retracts her docking collar, turns smartly towards a vector for the long journey insystem.  You recognize Lafleur's voice when Holly comms, "Thank you Gypsy Moth.  See you next time."

OOC: Ok, so the "bullion and bank records" job actually went as planned.  A job has to be a milk run every once in a while, right? ;)

OOC: Danica you can roll to dock on Box 2 for giggles if you want, but at your skill level it would be difficult to botch.

Box 2 looks squat and ugly in Gypsy Moth's sensors as she approaches.  She is unlit except or hazard lights at her corners, but light from the handful of ships docked on her illuminates Box 2's slab sides of titanium steel.  At some point while Gypsy Moth was docked on Holly, FRPC Messenger undocked and started outbound.  All that's left at the station are a sissy, an ESL Fat Trader, and two Svetlanan merchants.  Beyond the station, though, the mass of an Ozawa bulker is visible.

Box 2 Control's instructions to Moth are by the book.

By the time Gypsy Moth docks her port aft cargo lock on the station, Day 002 is nearly over.  The only personnel to greet Moth are two technicians to ensure the ship is mated properly.  Since the ship is coming from another FRE world, there isn't even a customs inspector to meet the ship.

It is after-hours on the station.  The Steel Beach is assuredly open, but business offices and the Box's small supply store are closed.

Will the group keep the same watch rotation as in space or reduce manning somewhat?

OOC: It is a couple busy days this weekend for me, but I'll try to get some more detail about Box 2 up and start the next thread.  No promises until Monday, though, sorry. :(

Re: Vicinity of Box 2 (Espiaux) 002-5742

Danica watched the transfer of the bank cargo to the Holly with a rather detached demeanor.  Still, the fact that the cargo handling was pushed onto one of the main tactical displays meant that she felt it was of some interest to those assembled on the bridge.  She listened to chatter and Nino's betting pool with a slight smile on her face - though she did not really partake of either.

When Lafleur's farewell crackled over the comm, Dani tapped her console and replied, "Our pleasure, Mr. Lafleur.  Good luck on the next leg of your journey.  Gypsy Moth out."  She watched the Holly detach and then pull away from their position.  A couple of minutes later after verifying hull integrity and that the launch was properly stowed, Danica nudged the Gypsy Moth back into action.  She didn't feel much need to rush, Box 2 was not that far away; so, she took her time.

Once the docking was complete and the data and power umbilicals were connected, Danica moved to power down the Moth and put her in stand-by.  Verifying her status with Nino in Engineering.

Then she turned to Jack (and anyone else) on the bridge, "Should we assemble in the crew lounge?"

Danica Moreau:
"Should we assemble in the crew lounge?"

"Indeed. We can draw straws for first watch,"
he grins as he swipes the ship-wide comm to open status.

"Attention all crew. Thank you for an excellent first trip. Please meet in the crew lounge in five minutes."

With that, Jack heads to the lounge.
