Re: Espiaux Subsector
Espiaux Planets
Alsace – Characterized by steep valleys and graceful, vertical architecture, Alsace is the most populous world in the Free Republic and boasts the third largest WDP in the sector. The planet is pleasant, if somewhat hot. Despite a significant axial tilt, seasons are mild due to the planet’s long orbital period. Alsace society is progressive, liberal, and self-reliant.
Espiaux – Nestled deep within its primary’s jump shadow, Espiaux is poorly lit by the dim red light of its dying star. Additionally, the atmosphere of this ancient world is oxygen deficient, but ozone rich. Tidally locked in orbit around a large gas giant, temperatures are chilly and local life non-existent. Given the worlds extensive drawbacks, one may wonder why it was colonized at all. However, the tidal stresses caused by Chaumeys, the gas giant, and extensive deposits of valuable minerals made colonization worthwhile by settlers who didn’t mind the planet’s remote location. Even now, most residents live in isolated undersea habitats. Espiaux has the most advanced technology of any planet in the sector and exports exquisite cuttlefin, a seafood delicacy, though the inhabitants are famous for their reclusiveness.
Marsoui – An earthlike world, Marsoui is the under-developed gem of the subsector. Plans were in progress for colonization when the Plague event happened. The Free Republic has since revived those plans and the first pre-colonization survey and construction teams landed in 5717. A trickle of settlers arrives each year, primarily from Alsace.
Rabaul – A small refueling station in orbit around the mainworld supports lines of communication to Marsoui. It also supplies a tiny scientific outpost on the methane ammonia choked planet below.
Savigny – A secondary planet in the Espiaux system, Savigny was colonized to provide food for nearby Espiaux. Savigny suffers constant high winds. The vegetation on this dry, windy planet is scrubby and bent. Only agricultural products from tough plants can be grown here. Piloting in Savigny’s wind-blasted atmosphere presents challenges.
St. Croix – Established in 5708 to support ships travelling the Alsace-Espiaux route, St. Croix is a frigid, ice-capped world orbiting a dim, red star. Fifteen hundred hardy souls eke out a living on the planet.
Winter’s Gate – A large iceball planet in far orbit around a cinder of a red dwarf, Winter’s Gate maintained a tiny refueling outpost until the Plague hit. The outpost was abandoned and later stripped.
