GM, 314 posts Wed 8 Feb 2012 at 05:55 | Re: Demonstrations of Legendary SkillAs Merlin leads the cluster of admirers back over to the audience, Freverick and the prince finally give up pleading for the moment, though they drift over to pull Nath into a none-too-quiet discussion of the flight, including arm-flailing gestures mimicking favorite parts. They keep pointing at the board where Merlin is carrying it, miming how it unfolds and pretending the stands are boards on which they're riding.
Fire Soul and Ocean Soul visibly resist joining in, trying to look more grown up, while Vaniel actually smiles indulgently at his young squire's enthusiasm and pretends not to notice when Nath guiltily checks to see if his master needs anything.
The Duke, meanwhile, returns to the audience as well, having stopped his own archery to watch Merlin's flight. "That was most spectacular, Mister Merlin," he says jovially. "This is an art common to the Northlands?"

"In the North the air is thin and updrafts are uncommon. Here in the East the air is thicker and there are more updrafts. It is much easier to do stunts outside of the North, although I can only wonder what would be possible in the South! As to it being common in the North, unfortunate it is a necessity your grace. It is not often that an individual can do much scouting or message relaying on foot due to the cold weather, snow, and other dangers. Having a glider, which are much more common, or a folding wing board glider can get you above most dangers and improves travel times. Unfortunately such devices are expensive to create due to the rarity of feather steel."

"Strange, then, that it should only have been developed in the North, where the winds are less favorable for it. Pray, Mister Merlin, tarry a while and show our craftsmen how these are made, and teach our men how they are used. My son seems to have taken a shine to it, but more, you have already named several uses we might have. And we could once again aid our northern neighbor by offering him scouts who can safely fly over Beastman lands to observe their movements."

"Her grace has excellent perception. Were I a craftsman that knew how to make such things I could go into business and become wealthy. As it is, it is my understanding that the raw materials would cost somewhere near a half talent of jade and hiring a team of craftsman to complete it would cost another half talent. They are useful in the north because the forests are not thick and are not wide spread. However, here in the East underbrush and large forests can hide many things from someone looking down from the air. One could all but hide a small army even with the proper discipline and training of soldiers."

In Halta there are battle fought between themselves and their enemies that one who is airborne could remain entirely ignorant of without being able to fly below the canopy as the Hawkmen do. Aside from such splendid displays as this, however, the boards would be quite useful in scouting the Yanaze River itself. I believe I may look into this, and see if a more efficient method of production may be found. If so, then I assure you, lady Duchess, that you will be the first to know of it."

"We would, indeed, be quite interested, Lady LeSchaye," she acknowledges before turning her attention back to Merlin. "Do not underestimate our resources, good sir; for proper defense...much can be spent. Though you have a point about the trees. Do you ever fly below the canopy?"
Duke Amaran takes the opportunity to speak to Beatrix, himself, however. "If you do follow through on that, Madam, please be sure to come by the Duchy again, or send us an invitation to your demonstrations. I would be delighted to see you and your business acumen in action."
"I'll learn to build it myself!" boasts the prince. Freverick and Nath look impressed, but Sevastian's younger brother is not to be outdone: "So will I! I'm gonna be an Exalt, so I'll definitely do it! And all my friends will have one!"
Poe blushes at Sevastian's head-pat, while Hun shakes his head. "We would be intruding. Merlin's not going to give lessons tonight, anyway; we can ask again on the road, when there is more time." He sounds only mildly disappointed, and is promising himself as much as excusing his dutiful behavior to the elegant butler.

"Of course, your grace. I was just giving you an estimate of the costs, so that you might compare them to whatever arrangements you already have on the ground. Certainly scouts with messenger birds would be less expensive in the short term. Wooden signal towers would be obvious to the enemy, but they would also be easily constructed from such fine timbers as would block normal view from the air."

GM, 317 posts Mon 13 Feb 2012 at 04:57 | Re: Demonstrations of Legendary Skill"We thank you, Merlin," responds the Duke. "Costs are something we always need to weigh. I think allowing Trademeet to perform the initial investments and buying any products from them may be the more economical; they do seem to produce high quality for comparatively low prices," he says, smiling charmingly at Beatrix as he does so.
"We do take great pride in the quality of all we do," acknowledges Poe with unvarnished pride.
"As well you might," says the Duke, bowing over her hand and kissing the back of it, earning a blush from the young girl and a carefully restrained but poorly-hidden protective scowl from her male partner. The Duke, if he notices Hun's reaction, ignores it.
Nath hisses, "No way!" to the prince and Freverick, meanwhile. The other two roll their eyes and continue hushed discussions, drawing the stuffier boy back in as they're still clearly going on about the flying show.

"For the cost of one of those boards, you could have many guards and dogs to investigate the area. If you wanted to get really fancy (Mason jazz-hands as he says 'fancy'), you could try to hire some sorcerer to keep up a magical mental relay such that, should one of the groups no longer be able to communicate, you would know where they last were."
Mason casually glanced at the others to see what they thought of his statement before continuing, "And besides, then you have to train someone to use the thing, and the upkeep. The fancier something is, the more you'll have to pay to keep it working. You know, like a high-class woman."
People who are trained in such things would probably notice that Mason said all that in a tone to get a rise out of someone.

"Well!" he puffs importantly, "I could learn it, and it would be worth it because I could command my soldiers from the sky, where I can see the battlefield!"
One of Amaran's fellow nobles says something quietly to him, and the Duke nods. "Perhaps, Seln, but we can discuss that later. Come, it is late, and time for princes to get their rest." He holds out his arm, which is wife dutifully takes, and grabs Prince Seln by the hand.
"Aw, but Daaad, I wanna play some more with Freverick and Squire Nathier and Mister Merlin!"
The Duchess frowns in the manner of mothers trying to look stern when they're really amused. "No, young man. Act like the prince you are, not like a spoiled child."
Seln looks about to protest, but changes his mind and acquiesces to his mother's tone. "Okay. I mean, um. It was a pleasure to spend the evening with you all. I hope to see you again in the morning before you leave."
Grinning charmingly, the Duke excuses himself. "I have some few matters of state to attend. Lyn will be putting our son to bed; Madam LeSchaye, would you care to come to my private quarters for some brandy to talk foreign relations while she does so? You all may, of course, use the fields if you wish, though it is getting a bit dark for archery. But do not feel the need to follow us in if you have a desire to enjoy the warm spring night air."

With that, only those who wish to remain outside as the sun sets are still present, which means pretty much none save those who accompanied Beatrix from Trademeet...and maybe a lone guardsman or a wayward bird in a tree. All others have sought the privacy of their own quarters or the company of others on a more intimate level.
