GM, 309 posts Sat 28 Jan 2012 at 05:00 | Demonstrations of Legendary SkillThe sun has set enough that it provides a great backdrop of reds and oranges over the large tourney field in which the Duke and his guests have gathered to watch Merlin's display of skill. Nath is visibly restraining himself to stay within beckoning of Sir Vaniel; the young prince has no such limits and is in the field looking as closely as Merlin will let him at the board.
Poe is trying not to yawn, though Hun seems more to share the other boys' excitement.
The Duke is on the far side of the field, practicing some archery with the three Knights (and poor Nath, who keeps stealing glances back at Merlin) while they have a private conversation, leaving Galen, Beatrix, and the others to find their way to the stands or to have a few minutes on their own while Merlin sets up.

Galen makes way to the seats, though the pirate tries to find a spot with a view of the Duke's archery practice. Galen was loath to admit to a poor proficiency with ranged weapons, and tries to see what good practices can be learned from their exercise.
When the event starts, Galen gives full attention to Marlin, quite curious and eager to see what an Exalted athlete can really do.

It is not long before Merlin has everything set up. He actually launches away form the onlookers and uses Air Dragon Sense to find a thermal which he can use to gain some altitude. Mentally he prepares for a show, thinking about what maneuvers he can utilize under these conditions. Down here in more temperate zones the air has much more lift than in the cold North. Once attained he will circle the castle catching every ones attention.
Swooping down he performs a roll, which is no small feat given that he is using a glider. Following that he does a steep dive with a half roll to invert into a loop which ends him up pointing back towards the gathering. Gaining some altitude he follows that with a corkscrew down towards the grounds which turns into a high speed swoop only yards above the heads of the audience. Using his air speed and a thermal he detects he climbs up again. Taking out the bag of chalk powder he keeps for marking walls and whatnot he opens it slightly and lets the winds spread the powder out behind himself and the glider as he performs a few twists, turns, and reverses. At the end the young princes initials are written in the sky in falling chalk dust as Merlin comes in for a landing.
14:33, Today: Merlin rolled 4+1=5 successes using 7d10 with the White Wolf Exalted system with a target of 7. Aerial Stun Show +1WP Stunt die separate.
14:33, Today: Merlin rolled 10,8,6 using 1d10,1d10,1d10. Individual Stunt die left to right.
If a 1 die stunt is awarded then +2 successes.
If 2 then +3 successes.
If 3 then +3 successes.

He was wearing the familiar style of guard uniform which the PCs had likely seen all over. He had taken the time that morning to brush his hair and tie it back so that it wouldn't blow all over, which had been more of a problem lately. Chatting idly with anyone nearby (since it does not seem that there was a conversation going), he said "So, are you here for that flying demonstration, or the archery going on down there?"
Mason leaned back in his seat, obviously relaxed. "I mean, both are entertaining, so it could go either way."

The young prince seems to agree, rushing out into the field as the show seems to reach its conclusion, whooping and hollering. "Can I try?!" he exclaims up at the flying man.
"Oh! Can I, too?" asks Freverick, tugging at Sevastian's sleeve and looking from his Terrestrial Exalted brother to the owner of the flight board.

Mason idly watches the flying competition for a moment before saying, "Oh, where are my manners. I am Mason Vaugn, just one of the many guards around here. And you fine folks are?"

Merlin tells those around him that unfortunately the folding gliders only seat one person and that allowing any one else, without weeks of training, to attempt any flying would be not only unprofessional, but highly inconsiderate to their families. They will just have to make due with the show he performed for them. However, he does suggest that perhaps they should all move down to the archery range where he might show them another trick of his trade.

Freverick joins in, "Please? I know I could do it!"
"I could, too, if you could!" exclaims the prince. "I'm gonna be a duke!"
"I'm gonna be a Dynast!"
Embarrassed by the younger boys' behavior and trying to hide it, Hun lets Merlin and them get ahead. "Thank you for the demonstration, Mister Merlin," he says. "If you have time to teach us later, I would enjoy the lessons. But for now I should return to my duties with Poe for Lady LeSchaye."

"Personally? The aerial demonstration. And you, good sir?"
In reply to Merlin (msg #3):
Galen's eyes widen in awe at Merlin's brilliant aerial dance. The brigand begins to applaud when Merlin begins to use her chalk to write in the very wind itself. Galen has never seen anything like it.
Alistr Hamrsoung: | As Alistr falls he shifts to a merlin(a small white falcon). Totally awake from his sudden fall he trails after Merlin on his Wingboard. |
Galen's head tilts at the sudden appearance of the white falcon. Is it a familiar, a cleaver slide of hand with a trained pet, or a Lunar?
Segev Stormlord: | "Can we not watch both?" asks the young man sitting attendance on the highly attractive woman with oddly pointed ears. The young woman also sitting attendance adds, "Though the flying is far more impressive." |
Galen tries not to let it slip that the Dukes' archery practice is not as entertaining as Merlin's performance, and eyes the two for a moment, seeing if there is anything suspicious about them. It was reflective for Galen to suspect anyone with odd features to be possibly inhuman.
Galen extends a hand to both for a shake, and also to the guard, Mason Vaugn. "A pleasure to meat you all. I am Captain August Galen, at your service." If they take Galen's hand, The Captain has three cufflinks made of cold iron that Galen will try to 'accidentally' brush against their hands.
Segev Stormlord: | The young prince seems to agree, rushing out into the field as the show seems to reach its conclusion, whooping and hollering. "Can I try?!" he exclaims up at the flying man.
"Oh! Can I, too?" asks Freverick, tugging at Sevastian's sleeve and looking from his Terrestrial Exalted brother to the owner of the flight board. |
Galen suddenly feels a bit guilty about being so excited to watch Merlin's show. The pirate had not thought of children trying to imitate the Exalted.
Galen looks weakly for the Duke and Sevastian for guidance to dissuade the two youths, not sure what to say.
"Um, I'm not sure if that is a good idea, uhhh..."
Galen is relieved when Merlin deflates the situation.

In a somewhat conciliatory tone,
"You are correct, I could show you how, but then that would only make you want to do it even the more. As it is, the evening has come and even a seasoned professional rider such as myself does not hazard flying at night."

He is mildly impressed at the firmness of Galen's handshake. It's hard to find a nice, firm handshake in some places. He doesn't really pay attention to Galen's brushing of the cufflinks as they go to shake hands. He says, off-handedly in answer to Merlin's question, "I came for the archery demonstration, but the flying demonstration is a nice surprise."
Returning his attention to everyone else, he says, "It's nice to meet all of you. Maybe we'll meet on the road at a later point. I shan't be here here for long, so I can't show you around the grounds, although I suspect you've already gotten the tour."
