GM, 715 posts Thu 16 Oct 2014 at 03:11 | A Panopoly of PrincesThe Duke of Watch Hill has a rather austere feast-hall, situated in the outer keep. Fresh rushes strewn about the floor crunch and sigh softly beneath servants' feet as they bustle about, while minstrels provide light background music. The tables are large and heavy and likely don't get moved much, but are draped with a long, thin banner in red and white. It's hard to tell due to the food laden on them, but if they match the pattern of the few hanging banners, they depict the Watch Tower in iconic form.
Five familiar-looking tapestries hang along the walls, showing the same scenes of five crowned Dragonblooded fighting off or standing triumphantly over defeated armies. There are some differences; rather than demons, these scenes depict beastmen as the fallen foes. But in all they are very similar to the ones adorning the court-hall of Oredol.
Both Princes Salf and Deen are present, seated on either side of their lord father at the high table, and Beatrix, Merlin, and Azalea have been invited to join the nobility as honored guests there. A few outlying counts litter the remaining tables, shared with captains of guards and landed knights. Freverick and his brother are at one of the lower tables, still in a place of honor, while Hun and Poe flank Beatrix's seat. Ned is sitting wide-eyed at the far end of one of the lower tables, though several of the more matronly serving-women are fussing over the boy to make sure he is taken care of.
The most surprising guests, however, are a bald man in Immaculate robes, who seems to be attending Prince Seln of Oredol. They are seated next to Deen, opposite where Beatrix, Merlin, and Azalea are seated beside Salf.
"Lady LeSchaye, Sir Merlin, Madam Azalea," begain Duke Lothus in formal tones that barely disguised his discomfiture at the unexpected guests, "May I present Brother Bars-the-Way, of the Immaculate Order, who attends my distant cousin from Oredol, Prince Seln, Air Aspect?" He doesn't quite seem to believe his eyes at the young prince being Exalted. The other Princes just seem jealous...though more of the new pet mospid that Seln brought with him.

Merlin performs the necessary greetings in proper fashion, but says nothing otherwise. Merlin keeps his thoughts very much to himself, thinking of the alphabet backwards if needs be. Meanwhile, look him over very carefully as he interacts with the other.

As dinner gets underway, Brother Bars-the-Way clears his throat and says, just a little too loudly, "What has brought us here is a wyld hunt, your Grace. We have been tracking a vile Anathema from Oredol, and fear it may have brought its corruption here.
"Have any of you seen such a thing?" he asks of the assembled guests. Duke Lothus turns his steely glower - really a habitual expression - onto the man, who seems blithely unaware. Seln and his guards are suddenly a bit uncomfortable, while the other two Princes can't help but glance at Azalea, Merlin, and Beatrix.
"I assure you," the Duke pronounces, "that we would be less celebratory were we having such problems at this time."
"Then the danger," replies the Brother smoothly, "is that it may be hiding here."

Ever since the confrontation at the Yanaze, he's been hoping to bring exactly this problem to Lady LeSchaye's attention ... but if the monk confuses him with the horrible owl-thing, all bets are off! Austringer keeps his scarlet eyes wide open and continues to observe in what he hopes is a sufficiently animalistic-looking way.

GM, 718 posts Fri 7 Nov 2014 at 23:59 | Re: A Panopoly of Princes"A godblooded?" Bars-the-Way seemed mildly surprised. "Could be the Anathema in disguise, I suppose, or one of their servants. The children of mortals who tempt gods from their divine nature are often trouble.
"What were they up to? Were they not related to the beastmen doubtless blasphemously serving the deceiver?"

Turning to Bars-The-Way, she studies the man a bit before saying, "Please, Brother, do you perhaps have any details you could share? For you see, I doubt that a Hunt would have been convened on mere rumor, and must confess that my curiosity has bested me. If there is anything you could tell of a villain who may be lurking in our midst, I simply must know."

GM, 719 posts Sat 15 Nov 2014 at 17:09 | Re: A Panopoly of Princes"The Anathema are tricky beings," he replies, "capable of being just about anybody. They steal the souls and lives of those they imitate.
"What we know is that one was sighted in Oredol, where this noble youth Exalted to fight it off. I've followed trails of rumor north to here, of suspicious bandit raids led by such creatures. The danger, with you so recently returned from a battle with the Beastmen, is that the confusion was used to plant the Anathema or one of its spies in this very castle.
Fortunately, we have the young Prince, here. He may be untrained, but the blessing of the Dragons combined with proper Immaculate fighting techniques should help us root it out. They always betray themselves eventually. Their vile nature will not permit peace for long.
But with the Wyld Hunt here, your families and people will be safer; the damage it does will be...contained. Alert me or the Prince of Oredol to anything suspicious!" he declares, speaking up for the whole of the hall's benefit, "and we will be best able to protect you before it begins slaughtering!"

The assembled guests share the toast, though there is a quiet rumble of discontent. People eye each other suspiciously as servants sweep through with the next course - a small flock of roast geese dressed up to look like swans.

"The cheek of that man." "As if our Duke would allow a monster like that here!"
Seln is showing off his pet to Deen, Salf, and Freverick. The Immaculate monk keeps being pestered by Freverick, who seems to think Brother Bars-The-Way should be a Dragonblooded Exalt. He tries to politely but firmly tell the young brother of a Dynast that he is not.
Hun and Po seem a little out of sorts, trying to help serve Beatrix without being in the way of the smooth running of the Duke's serving staff.

Noting this Merlin carefully puts his spoon down, next to his plate at an odd angle. Then he puts his own goblet down a bit forcefully, hitting the spoon at just the right spot to send it sailing up into the air to land in Beatrix's goblet. When it lands it does not splash up much.
"My abject apologies M'Lady."
He looks at the servant that just refilled it.
"You there, bring me the Lady's goblet."
Motioning at Hun, "Get the Lady a new goblet."
Motioning at Po, "Get the Lady some wine."
When the soldier who would be servant does as he bids he motions the servant near and says to it in a whisper, "Meet me at the tree in the courtyard after this to discuss our mutually beneficial future."

GM, 722 posts Mon 19 Jan 2015 at 02:47 | Re: A Panopoly of Princes | | A little discomfitted by being called to task directly by one of the high table's occupants, the serving-woman sidles quickly away from Merlin and the rest of the table, leaving others to finish ladening it with victuals at the end with the four boys and the Immaculate guest.
Irrepressible Freverick leans in as Brother Bars-the-Way tries to inquire after the other three boys about the training in hunting the local princes undergo. The brother barely conceals irritation at the patrician boy laying a hand on his wrist, and the escaping serving woman adroitly avoids treading on the elaborate loop of the gown worn by the guest accompanying Prince Seln and the others.
Poe once again elbows Hun as his attention strays to the obviously-expensive and impossibly-cut gown and what it showcases more than conceals. The young man returns to attempting to be attentive to Beatrix's needs. The three boys at the end of the table seem more fascinated by her air of sophistication. The Duke politely ignores how she condescends to his court, as if it were too provincial for her.
"...and you're all learning the art of politics, of course, my young princes?" she inquires.
Salf nods. "We don't have a LOT of time for it, what with the business of defending the borders, but it's important to be well-rounded," he offers, trying to impress her and, by the way he and his brother glance at the Lady LeSchaye, to see if she's similarly so.
"Of course, it must be natural as breathing in a city as grand as the one you're from," Deen offers, attempting a little flattery. The woman rejoins, "It's a matter of perspective. There, politics are war," she faux-laughs, raising her wrist to hide her mouth as his hand jerks away from Freverick's. The four boys look a bit put out at the suddenness of the motion, but the monk simply offers a gentle chide, "Be careful of such mighty grapples, young Patrician, when dealing with monks. Our reflexes are ingrained to be faster than our minds. Unlike the noble Dragonblooded, who can think and move faster still. Now," he turns back to the princes, "As I was saying hunting can be an important part of warfare. The enemy can be thought of as prey, especially when it is Anathema with which we must battle."
