Crew Gunnery range

located at the starboard, stern corner is the  door to the  Range...a crewman is always assigned  and logs folks  in and out.

There  are 16   stalls.. with a ledge.. there are indents  on the ledge  to hold the barrels of longarms.

There are three types of targets... Paper, Soft composite  Dummy flesh... and  Metal.

At the far end ( all the way to the Hull ) is a storage area.. the shoters  will call down to the storage, and crewman ( and some civies who pick up extra creds) with hang the target.... once they have secured the plating..a green  light will go on..allowing the shooter to move the target it closer   to the distance that they wish.. the  range is roughly 1/4 the width of the ship.

There are  different taregts..90%  of those in stock are Empire targets...demond, Largrans, Creshians of various  types, Avains.... they have some Hillites  and roussians , but they are  just making them...there are , of course, Humans, as well as the smaller Qarl. The other 10 % are   beasts from other  worlds like the Centaur like  creature from  the Green Moon, and the Black sludge creatures... as well as the Prylocs , the  'dragons'.

Use of  MGs  and Heavy pulse guns  are restricted to certain days of the week. since there is  greater  danger  of   stray rounds.

Garrat was in the process of examining his practice munitions to make sure they were all safety rounds so his high caliber weapon wouldn't punch a hole in a bulkhead.  He looked up and seemed a little distracted for a moment [the shell he had in his hand and hit the floor]

The tall Angel had a body bordering on perfection by human standards with her chestnut red hair cascading across the Ebony armor.  There was an unconscious grace to her movement that went beyond most of her species.  This being had been raised to be a warrior with a seasoned commander as a father and a black ops assassin as a mother.  She had the swap of a predator that knew what it was capable of, and the form fitting armor only served to accent it.  For the first time in his life Garrat understood why the humans of mid guard called them angels.

"Nice,"  He laughed, half sardonically, half in the true admiration he couldn't keep from his voice. "And how do you expect me to concentrate on my shooting with you looking like that?"

..consider  it a training aid? Our armor does not  leave anything , that could get caught on obstructions , to chance...

Lifting her helmet, she points to  the slot next to Garrat,..I will take this  slot... How do we set out  targets?

"My weapon is more powerful than most so getting fancy might not be a good Idea.  Right now I need to focus more on technic rather than actual targeting.  A man forgets much when he tries to knock Astra out of orbit with his own rusty hide."

He shifts the rifle up to his shoulder.  "I modified this baby to shoot fully automatic but the gas bleed that recocks the gun affects the spin on the bullet giving it a greater drop of when not on single fire so for now I'll practice one shot at a time."

"I'll use a paper target a yard in front of steel plate, at maximum distance.  I'm not here to learn how to draw from the hip.  The paper target will show the accuracy down to the millimeter and the safety rounds will not pierce the steel."

There is  a sniff as she says,..flesh targets ..have the  fluid, it is  thicker then blood.. so?.. you  are able to watch the  'blood' well up from your wound.. if you hit the  target in the kill spots.. the blood  will gush.. .. so if you  are off by a tiny bit.. you just get the wound , rather then the kill.

..one does notm always get to see you or target fall.. so knowing your spots is  key.

"That could be helpful but there is a small problem with it in my case."  Garrat signals for one such flesh target to be set up for him...With the lack of space on board a ship, the range can't be incredibly deep.  In this calm environment he should be able to land a shot fairly center on the chest of a Demon target.

The safety rounds are designed to kill a target without punching through walls beyond them and injuring collateral targets.  This means that when hitting a target they spread out greatly using an interior of soft lead and scored tips causing it to split open in a cross pattern, ripping a wider wound.  A 55cal sniper round is a lot of lead to spread out in an enemy body with an entrance wound the size of a golf ball and an exit wound the size of a basketball.  At mach 1.5 these bullets make the unarmored flesh target literally explode, spraying goo in all directions.  Hopefully the man setting these things up saw this coming and was able to be out of line of site of the targets.

"I just don't get a sense of how accurate I am with these targets."

..yes.. this is  so... but that same  round hitting a demon in battle armor might not get the effect. unless you hit , just so?

..most troopers    are trained to hit  center mass..... Angel elites  are trained to lit arteries .. neck. Groin..right below below the belly and  the ehart..needless to say, the ehad is  the best target.. but a sniper can't awlays  get a good shot  if they are  moving or  running.

Garrat shrugs. "Fifty, fifty chance on that.  I only use these rounds in here so they don't cut through the bulkhead.  A standard round will punch through the armor and the force of it passing into the abdominal cavity would still liquefy the organs.  I Cut a Black Quarl in two on the Largaran moon."

He signals to go back to the original target, "I'll just have to examine the target to see where I'm hitting.  But the holes should be visable through the scope."

He looks back at her,  "Again, it's my firing technic I need to work on first.  Once I rebuild good habits then I can worry about the rest."

Grrat continues to practice, if available he asks for silhuetes of enemy armor equipment such as mechs, tanks, and transports.  He Targets Pilot compartments, engines, and propulsion servos, even shoots the battery compartments.  He practices nailing the central nervous system on the UEs.

He slowly empties two of the massive B-clips in prone and hunkered positions and straightens up stretching his back. An audible popping can be heard.

With a few exceptions Garrat has always been pretty cool in battle for a human.  However he thinks about the angel's tendency for complacency might hide a strength in planning and executing projects related to patience. "I'm up for a break.  How about you."

As he contemplates the targets, Garrat thinks a bit.  Maybe sniping should be an option on a bigger scale.  He checks the directories and calls a forge ship, "This is Sergeant Garrat on the Hermes.  Were there any Largan Mechs on the captured Largan fleet ships?"

After the party, Diana went  to her quarters and went to sleep.

She awoke the next morning, feeling relaxed.

She dressed, showered, and then went to find the gun range.

She chose her weapons, first the assault rifle she had used on the mission.

She hadn't felt completely comfortable with it.  It had been something she had picked up at the lasts minute, before boarding the shuttle to the ship.  Then the mission had happened, and things had gone from there.

Now she had some down time.

She slide the clip into the weapon, and cocked it.  Then she took careful aim at the targets downrange.

The closest, 100 yards away were easy.  Those she consistently score bullseyes with, and her groupings were on top of each other.

the next targets were the real challenge, of 500, and then 1,000 yards.

She remembered her instructors at SEAL training telling her over and over to make sure she was relaxed.  She closed her eyes, took short, deep breaths, let them out and the pressed the trigger.

When she was done, she scored the target practice session.  the 500 yard was grouped well, but the 1,000 yard was off just a bit.

She loaded the weapon and tried again.

She spend the next six hours at the target range.

Muri has been sharing the Range with an angel in sophisticated form fitting armor and a massive humanoid who might remind one of a firbolg in another life [watch Justin facepalm].  He is also in armor.  Though it is much heavier yhan the angels, there are minor alterations to the ESN design that that lend it some of the grace of the angel gear while maintaining the hard ESN lines.

The angel seems to be working with the big man to improve his sniping skills.  There seems to be something else between them but it is hard to pin down....maybe for them as much as her.  The two of them had called a break when the big guy notices her.  He has shrewd eyes that seem to make an assessment of her as they pass over her. "Hello, new to the Hermes combat unit?  Ma ti and I will be taking a break in the bleachers if you would like to join us."

she picks  a standard   Pulse rifle from the rack..... You may use the  weapon of your Choice?

..I..um... I'll use  my Sanri Blaster....

she looks at the others. Lyri  Just looked at her  boots, Hack grinned,..you do know.. your range is limited?...it will be hard  to  put in the damage you need to do...and the Demon will be the toughest, and.. but the time the first two are  dealt with.... it will only have to go another 1/3 or so?

  Shadow  Nodded,..Understood....

Dusk  said, calmly but sternly,..you will embarrass yourself!

Shade whirled a bit and held  a  a finger  as if to say 'wait'

..Thank You Shade....You say the word, Ma'am...
he  flicked the safety off his sanri Blaster   and turned his    Right shoulder towards the  track down  range... Lights   came on so they could see the  bad guys moving... the Creshian moved   fast.. the largran  a bit  behind.. the demon  a lot more ponderous.

Lilit   began to fire.. each shot  caused the Creshain to jerk.. the  third shot  hit its head and  the chief dropped the  target, the Largran was  right behind..

Shadow took a  Shot  the   Creshian  wiggled  a bit.. but not much Damage as his shot was a bit wide..but the  sawed-off shot gun-effect managed to hit the shoulder a  bit..

Shadow  Frowned  and  shifted his   feet a bit, bringing   the weapon over  and down a bit...

Lilit  Looked at the chief  who was  surprised  as well..  and Lilit's Demon hit her Light  and it went off..

The Warlord   stood Up.. Shadow  smiled, rather  smugly....NO!... NO... You didn't Put the required Hits in!.. You could not have!

Shadow   went  to spin His   sanri in his hand, and almost dropped it ,causing Beth and Lyri  to duck in case it went off....when he  holstered his weapon he said,.. I believe.. i was to stop them from hitting  the Light tripper?... he  points to her  flashing lights....

..but.. YOu hardly hit it? she  looked at the chief who was trying to figure out a ruling.

..let me say this..... If that had been a real demon..  i would have shot at its head......i sorta.. shot at its  head...  I brought it  down... my light wasn't tripped.. yours  was?

He  Looked at HAck who raised his hand is self defense, then Pointed at the chief...

The Chief  wasn't  real thrilled at the lack of support from his Admiral.. but threw up his hands,..Warlord?    LC?... we don't have anything in the rules for this..and?  this  particular contest wasn't  ever  run before.... since the LC's   targets  didn't reach his tripper.. and Your's  did... I have to rule In his favor...

Shadow   added,..had you continued to fire, rather then wait to see me ...lose? You would have   won..since you would have  been close to killing yours first..

Lilit has  a Twisted  smile.....that is  an odd  way to win a contest... Mr  Shadow,

Zob casually shrugged, "It's a anti life weapon and that's only the standard rounds, i can't use the specialty rounds here or i risk destroying the range..." Zob then reset the target and sent it all the way down to the furthest end of the range, "It's called the Ender a fitting name, its got heavy armor piercing, anti infantry, thermite explosive rounds" he then handed the weapon off to Froth to try, "Go on shoot it"

Melia wandered in from the field gym, she'd opted to do a combination of football practice running agility drills in her kit, then using the weights to get a strength workout in. Workout done drenched in sweat and hearing sounds on the gunnery range she decides to wander over and see what's going on.

The  Black man looked  at  Zob, then  LT Cross...Cross  shrugged  and  Nodded.

Froth hefted the weapon, it was solid, for certain, but it did not  seem overly heavy.. for a human, the weight  seemed to be more to the  back. He racked up the round,  steadied the rifle on a bean bag, and sighted  on the  target...Damn good  optics....

he  said with one   eye closed  and  his  teeth showed in a bit of a concentrating smile. The  the Rifle  barked, the   round went down range  and  hit the  target to  the right, just above the waits, most of that section was tore  away.

wow..shot  just a wee bit low, but i'm not used to it..i bet a few rounds  would be hitting right in centre Mass... don't even have to try a head shot?... You nick somethign with this, its goign down.

LT Cross truned to look at  Melia,  we  all have   sniper spins...part of being the iron Guard..we're still waitnign for our  weapons to catch up. Fuji R&D have these  rifles....., got this   curved   scopes on that hug the  rifle?...effectible range  for the round is  about 900?  it has a   screw on front  barrel that you can replace every  50 rounds or so, to keep the rifling  up to snuff, then we deliver the  used  barrels to the tech  folks and they clean  them  are as good as new. The rounds they use  are  called  'Fuji Fire'... a tad bit bigger then  a 308...comes in hollow point  and   AP. They are made that way so the rifle is useless  to anyone who doesn't have the Ammo. Tell you what thouhg?.. You find one in the field?  bring it home, we can add it to the QM stores, or you could sell it for a  cool 2000 creds..used..

he chuckles, nick name for them  are  'Fuji Sticks'. I'm hoping they catch up to us soon./

When I need it out of the way it's no bigger than a grease gun and still drops baddies with hard ammo at 600m. When you get yours in let me know I'd love to give it a spin, but when you wear multiple hats sacrifices have to be made." She says with a slight shrug.

Once the weapon is proffered to her she takes a few moments to look it over and examine it, seeing how it feels, and how the mechanisms operate. All things that will help her shoot it better.

In reply to Melia Kristensen (msg # 48):

quote:
This is a Roussian  'Ender' It is  called that because it  was supposed to end the life of the target it  hit... it has a magazine of   4  rounds.., the stock has  pistons to take  the shock of the recoil.. the optics are almost as good  as Largrans...it has  an effective range for  a Roussian shooter of almost a mile.

quote:
opening a  drawer with the keycard, he took out  three boxes.. he set one round from each boxs.. they  looked a  bit bigger then a 50 Cal earth round.  ..the  pointed one is   for heavy armor.. the point  with break through and  flatten, before   the  powder inside  explodes.., one can image  the  effect on light armor or no armor.... the   rounded   point  on the next on is  for  infantry and the like.. it   'bashes  its  way through, betting bigger  on the  way out as it flattens out..even a leg would  of  hip would  could be fatal.. the  next one  with the  Blue  top? It is  incendiary.. the round   drives into the armor or the body, and the combustible inside  explodes.. ..

Zob walked with her to station 1 and reset the target for her before sending it all the way down the range, "Targets all set fire when ready" he then made sure he was out of the way he didn't wanna be on the wrong side of that weapon!

Melia nods, and adjusts herself accordingly. The gun is more like a heavy sniper than her light carbine. The trade off was this could reach out and put someone's soul into a state of permanent unemployment much further out, as well apparently coming with a greeting line addressed to whom it may concern for more heavily armored targets.

Settling in she moves around a bit getting a feel for the gun it's balance how the barrel and the sight track. Then steadying her breathing she give a firm smooth squeeze to the trigger sending a round down range aim high center of mass between the shoulders of the silhouette.

Melia shrugged, a little more to the right than I wanted, but you're right that's a bad day even if it gets close, I'd hate to treat someone hit by those. Most I'd be able to do is pump them full of morphine and send them off to sweet dream land." She says loading the second round and selecting a different target this one at the far end of the range. She breathes slowly and calmly remembering the feel of the first shot, and makes a few micro adjustments to her aim and body position. Then when she's center and hits the middle point of her breath she cleanly squeezes sending a round down range that impacts dead center of the torso.

A Target Popped Up, the   Muzzle  rose, and the young trooper  fired.. three   bursts , one   hit the left shoulder,   once missed ,  above  the left shoulder, Jax finally got the nose  down  and hit  the chest.

The Next  target popped  up he  was a bit  more control hitting the  left shoulder once more, and  the center of the chest  right below  the neck, before getting the Muzzle down, however he over  compensated  hitting the right  hip.

The last target, het got into the   left chest...center chest, and Belly.

..I keep pulling to the left!

 Jumping Lion watched  with interest.

Nifty was a few booths  down  he  was shooting at a 'water wheel' of sorts, that rose as it  picked up random metal cubes on the risng  shelves..for those watching, he had fired  5 rounds, and never  missed a  cube.

Zob watched Jax's technique and internally frowned a bit but he was here to help him improve not ridicule him, "Here let me help you" Zob went about adjusting Jax's posture and how he was holding the carbine making sure he had a solid grip on the stock, "You need to control your breathing as well when your ready to shoot take a deep breath and exhale about half of it and hold your breath as you pull the trigger but not to long or it will throw off your aim even more"

Zob then took his rifle and demonstrated the technique by putting a full 30 round magazine down range and every round hitting in a rather nice grouping, "So remember to Breathe,Relax,Aim,Squeeze the trigger,Squeeze more for the follow through"

he then reset the targets and when Jax was ready he would hit the switch.

Zob then adjusted the test to cause the targets to rapidly approach to simulate a charging enemy, "This time the targets will rapidly approach you if they make it all the way you die, if you run out of ammo for the carbine quickly switch to your DT5 and finish the job now lets begin" This time he wasn't gonna give him a warning of him starting the exercise he wanted to test the troopers ability to react to danger.
