In reply to Tunnels (msg # 1):

"Understood"   Garrat lifts the heaviest of the injured angels easily despite his healing leg.  His expression is schooled as he keeps his thoughts about priorities to himself. "I called Spencer about it.  They have identified the sickness and it can only come from injested material.  All who are found with the sickness need to go to the med deck as they don't know how fast it will affect it's victims."  Garrat starts making his way as fast as possible to the med deck.

The LArg  was  very fast..  it   reached the Stern end of the Hermes, before   Shadow  was amidships.. it   ran back towards  Him  , then around him  and took off  fore the stern Once  more.

It reached the end  and  Ran Back towards  him,  and repeating  its circle  ...  By the Time  it  reached the stern this  Time, Shadow, who started  running harder,   Just reached   the LArg.. But   Accelerated  into the   turn  that took   him across the stern.. the   Larg   Gave a short Howl and  ran  after   him... again it  waited on  the pilot   as he neared the   starboard side, then Shadow  Accelerated  up the side   again.. this time, the LArg Went  Full out.. ...  running around  Shadow  4 times ( even though Shadow was  running  fullout now) , before the pilot reach the  starboard  Bow, then they Both Ran to the Port bow, where Shadow's Jacket lay.

He winced   as he  held hands on both his Ribs,..yeah....  good  run... pushed me hard.. but i better   call it for  the day... Lets Got to the rec dec... may as well see what happens when they see you...and don;'t eat anyone!

the   Larg  Burbled  as Shadow  Untucked the leash,  and    slipped on his Jacket.

Reachign the Tunnels he opened a service panel  and  got the PA phone for the   Tunnels,..This is LC  SHadow... Me and a LArg are goign to run the Tunnels... do not shoot the LArg...or..you know?.. me?..

Its  was a silly   habit, but the snipers   woudl use the tunnels for long  range  practice, since the  tunnels   went  from stem to stern.

he  loosened Up a  Bit as Larry  Thumped his tail.....Now?.. You don't have to wait for me... I'm fast, but not Larg fast..  Run  your Brains out...

Larry   stood   and  waited, Tail thumping  More   Until Shadow started to Jog , at first to   loosen.. LArry was   at Amidships  but the time he hit 20 yards..

Shadow   just shook his head as he  watched the LArg scamper off  down the tunnel.. it wouldn't belong before  he rounded the Stern.

Larry was  charging Up behind  shadow  who was runnign hard now, and only  about   10 Yards   from the stern.

As he Talked  , Larry Lapped him   , round the  bend  to the  port side of the ship  , he would  be  rounding the far side, even as    Shadow  pushed harder.

when he  was finished   Talking to Teela   he  pushed   even harder... Boots pounding    arms  pumping  as he   Saw  Larry Stop  and sit  down before he rounded the  corner.. when  Kray was a mere 10 Yards  away, LArry took off  again, and shadow  pressed   even harder  with a bit of  embarrassed anger..   Larry  was  maintainigna  pace now... but he was movign fast... and shadow   couldn't possibly catch him, but at elast.. he wasn't losing  ground as fast.

Larry stoped at the portside Bow  end and waited,,  Shadow   gritted his teeth as he shouted,..I'm Gonna take  another Lap, Once i reach  my Jacket!... You run as much as you want!

The larg Took   Off  and was Gone.. Shadow had to   gear down.. he wouldn't make  a whole 'nother lap at this pace... and he sure as  the 9 hells  wasn't  catching  Larry!

Shade   held up a thumb and bleeped.....that's right... The more you do it, the better you get.. you got a ways to go..who knows   how fast you'll get?... or?..maybe you won't be fast, but you can run forever.. the main thing is..getting better... and if you beat yourself.. you did it!

Shade  Gave  Him a  quick  Hug.. Larry was bouncing up and  down...Ok?.. I'm doing  two  laps  starting from our  JAckets..  You can wait  for me, if you feel like stopping... or?.. if  you want to keep going,  I'll   run with you to finish   what you want to run?.... Lets  Go...

They   started off    on a Jog...  Shades  smaller  ., heavier  steps  loud  behind  Shadow's  light   steps..Larry    Blurbled.. shadow  said,..get going you over  grown Geko..have  fun....

The Pilot  took off    in a burst of speed.... Shade     whistled    and  tried  to   explode.. he did go faster.. but..he just wasn't made the same... As Shadow rounded the  Stern  end.. LArry was   rounding  the Bow end, where their JAckets were.....Shade was only 2/3s  done  the     tunnel's side  ..  Shadow  and Shade  were about 3/4 of the  way down the portside  of the  ship, when  Larry came  around the  corner,, still   pushing  hard, though he  didn't  seem as   fast as he  was    the  first 4  times  around

Shade Bleeped  his ehad  was down..

what?.. No?.. not  from here?.. we're almost half way done with the Lap... another   Mile and a half or so?... Get you head up.. breath  through you  nose...out yur moth..i guess?.. if you have lings?.. if you don't have lungs, you should be able to run allday!

Shade whirled  and grinded,..trust me?.. when we  reach teh  JAckets... You'll  feel real good  about yourself..

The    started to Cross the stern  as  LArry  caught Up to them...    He  slowed to a Trot  and  trotted  behind the  two...

Shade  had  a hard  time keeping his head up.... he beeped  again...

..arms  and Legs  in  rythum .. don't   get out of   step.... You can do this?

there was   some more grinding    as they reached  the starbaord  side  and  started    down towards the Bow.....Sure?.. You can quit?.. two laps is damn hard.. You know how many  Miles, two laps  around the Hermes is?... but then you'll have a Limit?.. that's sorta Good... then you know what you have to beat, next time....but... if you make it?.. you  won't know  what your limit is.. and you can press.. as  long  and  as hard  as   you can..

Larry  ran  past the  and Stop  amidships  and Howled

see that?.. Larry's  waiting for you... we're  already   1/4   way down the starboard side...You ..can..do  this...

Larry Hopped  Up and   down  on his   hind legs Shade  pressed a little  harder..

They were   Now  about  10 yards   From Larry..   Shade  was struggling, but   mushing, making grinding  sounds, , Just as they  were  with in  Arm's  length of LArry, Be Bolted  away  again..

When they rounded  the  bend  to  see the other side of the ship.. Larry  was  Just reaching the  Jackets...he Thumped his tail, his head  going up and  down  as  he Howled  again...he  laid  down..Tail thumping  madly..

..there it is , buddy... we're  already  crossing the Bow... Just gotta  get to the otherside!...now i know you're  not  gonna stop now!

Shade  reached  deep.. his  new..longer stride  was  getting  shaky ,, his  arms   pushed   hard, fists clenched.

It took  way longer to cut across the bow, then it did  to cut across  the Stern, a bit  ago.... The last 100  yards  , S Hade  was leaning forwards..  he head well ahead of his hips.. Larry was thumping away.. Shadow    repeating  encouragement.. something stern....sometimes upbeat... 5 yards  away from   Larry..  Shade  launched Himself    Forward.. the Surprised  LArg  was hit   By  Shade , the pair   rolled  over to the JAckets..

Larry laid on his  side   with  Shade leaning against him. see ?..  Bet you feel great  right now!

Shade   lifted  up his right arm, for a thumbs  up.. then dropped  it..

..well?  Let's go..I promised  would  we'd take your sister  to the OB Dec...

Shade   held  Up   one  finger  and  dropped it again.

..sure   we can wait a minute or so?.. but you  know Arnie  has those  Milkshakes...

Shade  sat Up, reached for his JAcket  , then got  up..slolwy...walkign to Amidships where the Elevator  waited...

TUNNELS

Roy explained as they walked.  "Oh, they knew something was wrong...there was just nothing they could do about it while stuck inside the tank.  It's all about hitting the weak points...no way you're busting a tank's armor with small-arms fire...maybe...MAYBE...you could do it with a .50cal and special rounds, but these guys didn't have much in the way of high-tech ammo.  But when the tank's buttoned up, the driver was stuck using either a camera or some kind of viewfinder to see where the tank was going...so you shoot that.  The tank either has to stop, or drive blind...or the driver has to pop his hatch so he can see, which is usually what would happen.  I mean, if the tank stops, it's out of action anyway, so it's effectively disabled."

He paused as they stepped up to the QM cage and he requested the three rifles, and twenty rounds of ammo for each.  "More than we need to test them out, certainly, but if you decide you like one, you should have enough rounds to get a feel for it."

Once the ammo and rifles arrived, he resumed the explanation as they walked.  "So, tank's either out of action with a full crew, or they just lost their driver...usually, the commander will check to see what happened to the driver, so you cap him when he pokes up...that leaves the loader alone inside, he's generally not trained to drive the tank and is often the most junior member of the crew...if he tries to take a look to see what happened, he joins the other two.  Odds are good he grabs the radio and reports as out of action."  Roy shrugged, and added, "More resourceful commanders could try calling out directions to the driver while using the gun sights...which are about as armored as the drivers' optics, and also limited to whichever direction the turret is pointed.  Another shot and they've got no way to see anything...can't drive, can't shoot.  All they can do is either stay buttoned up and wait for help, or surrender.  In the engagements I heard about, those who hunkered down ended up being captured.  And the only damage to the tank was the optics.  Now, you had to have a REALLY good sniper to do it, and he had to be in the right position relative to the tank, so it didn't happen often.  But it was possible."

They'd arrived at the forward end of the tunnels by that point, and Roy settled the .50 and .308 Lapua to the ground, raising the Beretta to look down the length of the ship.  "Ah, good work, boys," he muttered, spotting three different silhouette targets, at varying yardages...one at 500, one at 800, and one at 1000 yards.

He lowered the rifle.  "Well...pick your poison," he said with a grin, indicating the rifles.

Teela grinned in anticipation as she studied the three rifles. She was eager to test all three but it was the Barret that had captured her attention so that was the one she went to and picked up, looking it over. It was massive and radiated a sense of sheer power. "Oh yes, definitely the Barret first."

TUNNELS

Roy grinned.  "Aim at the far target...they're bullet-traps made out of deck-plating material, but if you shoot the near one, you just might punch a hole through it...a few hundred yards makes a big difference in velocity on a round like this."  He handed her a cartridge that tapered to a smaller diameter for the bullet, itself...but the projectile, while smaller than the main body of the cartridge, was still as large around as Roy's index finger.

"These are just standard ammo rounds...back when they first came out with this design, they occasionally used 'density-enhanced' rounds...depleted uranium in a steel jacket.  Because of how dense the uranium was, the rounds could punch through lighter-weight armor...you could bring down aircraft pretty easily, if you could shoot straight enough to hit them, and while main battle tanks were armored enough to take those kinds of rounds...at least, from a .50...APCs and light tanks were valid targets for them.  There are some other specialty rounds out there, as well...I've actually used one variety to take a target inside a shuttle...went right through the cockpit metaglass.  There wasn't much of him left after the hit...they'd use rounds like that in some of the urban combat settings, you could shoot a target through heavy brick walls, or multiple layers of cinder-block.  I've read accounts of snipers who only knew they hit their target because of the blood spray from the impact...they never saw the guy, someone spotted him and called out which wall to shoot."

He grinned fondly down at the weapon.  "This is my 'when it absolutely, positively, must be hit at any cost' weapon...I've actually got a tally mark on the ship's kill board because of this thing.  Not something I'd encourage everyone to try and do...but it's nice to know it can be done."  He dug out a couple of pairs of earplugs, handing one set to Teela.

"You're gonna want those.  This thing has a helluva roar when it's out in open air...in these tunnels, it's almost enough to make your ears bleed."

TUNNELS

The expression on her face was all business but her eyes danced as she lightly dropped to the floor of the tunnel and put the plugs in. She picked up the Barret and a magazine and checked the load before sliding the mag in and pulling back the bolt. She pulled the rifle in snug to her cheek, one hand on the grip and other on the stock and looked through the scope which, combined with her augmented vision, allowed her to see small imperfections in the target. She adjusted the scope so it wasn't sighted in so closely (for her) and sighted in the ten ring.

She slowed her breathing before deciding she was ready and took a deep breath which she released half of through an open mouth, holding the other half in and gently squeezed the trigger. There was a roar, a palpable pressure wave and the round slammed into the 10 ring on the target.

Another deep breath, another hold, another roar. She fired methodically until the clip was empty and looked up at Roy, a big smile on her face. "Oh yes, I like this a very great deal."

Roy grinned.  "We've got a couple of them on board, compliments of the LC...no idea where he got them from, and I'm not gonna start asking."  He gestured at one of the other rifles, similar in design.  "That's based on the same design...smaller round, but it's still high-velocity and a good sniper can score clean kills at 800 yards.  A REALLY good sniper can get kills at  kilometer, but it's easier here on the ship...no crosswinds, no planetary curvature to account for, so range and windage aren't the same challenge that they would be on a planetary surface."

He grinned, and added, "That one was a gift from a friend...I'm not going to ask him where he got it, either.  Same guy who scared up the Kalashnikov I carry on regular duty."  'Regular' was, of course, a matter of perspective, as the rifle was nothingat all like any of the standard-issue long arms the ESN provided.

"Give it a try...I don't use it often, mostly just in training to keep me from getting too settled on a single weapon, because I've got other options that are more familiar."  He shrugged, and added, "If it suits you, you're welcome to it, for sniping missions.  Be a lot easier to fly with that one than the .50."

Teela checked the rifle Roy indicated and made herself familiar with the working before loading the magazine and working the bolt. Once again she set the rifle snug to her cheek and adjusted the scope, sighting the target at 1000 yards.

Breathe in, out, in, out halfway. Hold. Squeeze the trigger. Up and to the left slightly. Adjust the scope. Sight again, breathe, squeeze. Shot in the ten ring. Every hit in the ring, good grouping.

"I like this one but there is just something about the Barret that draws me in. I'll give the last one a go and see what I think."

Roy chuckled when she expressed her preference for the larger rifle.  "Well, that makes sense.  It really is kind of the ultimate 'Reach out and touch someone' weapon, in hard ammo.  From concealment, with a flash suppressor, it's the closest thing to a beam-weapon you can get, without the drawbacks of a visible beam to give away your location."

He lowered the Beretta from his arm, where he'd been holding it to spot the targets, and held it out for her.  "This one was a trophy, of sorts...I forgot that Largran rifle, speaking of trophies, so I'll have to let you check it out some other time.  But the previous owner of this one didn't need it anymore..."  The dark twist in his voice left little question about why the rifle had become available.

"I don't generally make a practice of taking trophy pieces...but every so often, something is just too good to leave behind."

"And without the kick I was expecting. It's very well made to keep the recoil down so effectively. This look like a work of art," she said, indicating the Beretta which she accepted from Roy.

Once again she looked it over to get to know it before slipping the magazine in and adjusting the sights for her use, using the 1000 yard target. Breathe. Hold. Fire. Shot in the 10 ring. Repeated until the magazine was empty.

"This shoots beautifully. The wood stock is classic and really great grouping. I am most impressed"

She stood and handed the rifle back over. "Shall we have some snacks before I put some more rounds through the Barret?" She asked, siling at him as she did.

TUNNELS

Roy grinned and shrugged.  "Those appetizers aren't getting any warmer..."  He opened the box, taking a seat on the tunnel floor.

"I was actually surprised by just how well that Beretta shoots.  I'd be curious to know just how old it actually is...and how many pieces of wood were rejected before that one was chosen.  Sniper rifles...well, duty-issue sniper rifles, at least...have been made with composite stocks for...ages, now, on Earth.  It's hard to find a piece of wood that's large enough for a stock, and doesn't have some kind of flaw in it that will eventually impact the performance of the rifle.  I mean...you have a soft spot in the wood along the barrel, that eventually becomes a vibration point, and can wind up with the barrel actually shifting a significant fraction of a degree when you fire.  If you're shooting at something a hundred meters away, it's annoying...but you multiply that fraction of a degree by a kilometer, and you're inches off target."  He grabbed one of the fried squash slices and bit into it, chewing for a moment before he swallowed, and resumed.

"There are chemical treatments, of course, that can counteract a lot of those flaws...but most firearms producers decided a long time ago to skip treating wood and just come up with their own substitute that didn't have the random chance of a fatal flaw.  So, that's either a REALLY old weapon that's been incredibly well cared for...or it was an artisan piece, that someone requested with a wood stock."  He finished off the chip, before adding, "But it sure does shoot nice.  I wouldn't use it as a substitute for my regular rifle...mine's a little longer, and a little heavier, handles the recoil better and is just a hair more stable in imperfect conditions...but this one does great on ships and stations..."  He gave a cryptic smile as he said it, then reached out and grabbed one of the boneless wings, popping it in his mouth and chewing, with a satisfied look on his face.  He didn't bother mentioning the EDT operatives and Vampic troopers that the Beretta had taken down just yesterday on Anzio.
