In reply to Admiral Hack (msg # 973):

Well, I would think, where she's actually ESN personnel, the media ships may give her stories they want covered...but Admiral Hack gets the final say on whether or not she gets to leave her military post to go cover them...*grin*

Or am I misunderstanding her position, and she's actually a civilian assigned to a military post?

Re: OOC #24

Oh, I understand that...just wondering if her assignment from a media ship conflicts with her military assignment, who gets top priority (although, I suppose, really that question can only be answered by her...I mean, we HAVE had someone resign his commission before, so it's possible, although he's not a precedent I would recommend to anybody, and being escorted off the ship like him wouldn't exactly do wonders for her career as a military correspondent...)

I mean, if she was actually non-military, a lot of the stuff Roy said to her about not being worried about whether or not she was losing her job because of missing out on one story kinda goes right out the window.  But since she IS military, even if the media ship she's reporting to decides to disavow her, Hack can always say, "That's your decision...but she will be THE only source of inside information on the Hermes, so I guess that means she can really start pursuing the best deal in the marketplace for that information..."  *laugh*  They can stop paying her to deliver news, but she won't be fired unless Hack decides he's got no use for her.  She'll just be involuntarily freelancing...with a military stipend that means she doesn't have to accept just any old offer that comes along.

Re: OOC #24

Although she is military she's not ESN, so her main worry is the media company deciding to reassign her to the pit to spend the rest of her career reporting on the state of the steel industry. Though if she had the backing of the fleet behind her then she would have no problems getting another (or even several) media company to take her on.

I read her a lot like embedded reporters of vietnam, korea, even ww2 where while trained ect reporters existed in a weird state where they were paid by the industry they were assigned by the military to specific units.

Re: OOC #24

They're trying to paint it as being akin to the Army Air Corps, which became the Air Force.  The Air Force already has a branch that's doing the stuff the Space Force is supposed to do.  The majority of personnel which will comprise the initial ranks of it will be reassigned USAF personnel (if I remember correctly, most of the rest will be Navy, with a handful of army and Marine transfers--maybe).

The precedent is there, but the difference is, the Army Air Corps had already fought a war as such and proven that there was, indeed, a pressing need for a military branch that was independent of the Army to carry out aerial operations.  To say that we have a pressing need for an independent Space Force is ludicrous.  Any space operations that we have in place are currently managed by avery small percentage of the USAF, and they pretty much all consist of monitoring satellite operation, most of which is in place to support ground-based operations.

Trump couldn't get his Wall as a monument, so he spun out a premature military command, instead.

Re: OOC #24

Ugh I lugged a pig (m60) around for a month in 2010 when I was at a training. Those guns were stupid heavy and stupidly prone to jamming. By the end of the training it was a glorified belt-fed sniper rifle.... granted the damn thing had been used in Vietnam....

I hate those machine guns... (thank you for coming to my TED talk)

In other news today was a very stressful very very terrible day...

Okay so here's the details:

Today my wifes future employer called and told her they had to rescind her offer due to them losing a huge contract. They've sent her a bunch of places and references to hopefully find a new job. However, with movers currently loading everything we own on a truck it was too late to turn around and stop them bc contracts ect.

She's currently devastated and just trying to figure out life. Right now we plan to keep plans that have been made and try and push forward and finish the move to Virigia.  I'll be starting back at the restaurant in the area full time middle of next week to help reduce the total hit we are taking.

We managed to rescind our offer on the condo we were in the process of buying (turned out lucky because the appraisal came back well under the asking price and nearly $20k under our offer) so we avoided that, and re-secured the apartment we originally leased and have managed to set everything up.

Needless to say today's been a hell of a ride. My availability due to IRL may be severely limited however this is my online home away from home and a big part in keeping me sane. I'll be back in IC tomorrow.

Man...that's a rough deal, no matter which way you look at it (except for getting out of the condo...which, if it appraised that poorly, may make this whole thing a blessing in disguise, because now you aren't stuck with it and starting out being upside down on a mortgage...)

I'll keep my fingers crossed for smooth sailing in the actual move and bigger and better things waiting on the other side.

Re: OOC #24

Hang in there... you know all of us will be pulling for you.

Post when you can/need  stress relief..otherwise , help keep yuour wife together, and shoudler through this.

I agree with  Roy, in that , you got out of that Condo thing  with out too much damage...My lowest point was gettign  laid off  for almost a year, I was working for one of the guys I coached with, but it was limited...4  Kids.. wife worked  part time as   baker  for the highschool… then I got my break into the post office .

which?.. since you are military? you should look into that, and other  Civie service  jobs.. your  get Vet preference points  and  they have to hire you before guys like me!

there was a Guy ( he's still working) got in as a clerk and switched to carrier..he got  10 Vet points..5  for Vet  and 5  for being 'disabled"/.. supposed hearing loss..but  you know how some guys play the system... anyway he ha d  10 points  added onto his score..and  that..JUST.. got him on the Rolls.

You can check Civil Service jobs  on line..Post Offcie  ( USPS.Gov? ) look for  career listings....

no matter which of  hundreds of Civie service  jobs you'd get..they pay well, and  yhou can use that as a base until you find  what you want.

Re: OOC #24

Thanks all.

I got out of the military in 2014 unfortunately get 5 point preference on federal job applications. My hearing loss isn't sufficient enough to net me additional disability.

I've currently got a job lined up.  A one year fellowship with the department of energy (DOE) but it won't kickoff until June because I have to get a DOE security clearance and that takes time.

Another silver lining is my wife may qualify for some unemployment she's looking into what the rules are for Texas, and the company that rescinded the offer reached out to their competitors in the area recommending her and one company is already talking about setting up an interview...

Hopefully this winds up being a very round about blessing in disguise but we're not getting our Hope's up yet

Re: OOC #24

the old  saying. 'prepare for the darkness...welcome the light..The  LAst  time i was laid off from my factory Job ( great place..we had sports teams   and stuf)..I tried out  for the Pittsburgh Maulers  of the USFL... I almost  made it to camp ( missed  by, like 5  minutes )..had I made the team, I could have played  the whole season and not missed one  hour of work.

But..I got the post office  offering, and worked  both jobs until I made my  3 month  probation..then  quit the factory... the factory closed  down about 4 years later...and I had a 30 year Career  in the post office.

Its  rough?.. that Vet  disability perferance is aribtray..I think..My oldest son was on an Aircraft  Carrier  after   ringing out of the  SEALS..he was awaiting another shot at the SEALS, and was on the USS Kitty hawk for  5 years..his  bunk was right under the Flight deck..so  plains  landing   and taking off  as  well as the catapults  , and  equipment he had to work on ( IT)..he has some hearing loss  , but they didn't recognize it.. and  he is a lot like me , he wouldn't press it  if he thought he was taking advantage, ( something I wish  my family would do as I see  others  did).

the guy I worked  with was a weasel and the Airforce guys, let him get  his  own doctor;s   review of  his hearing..and he got 5 points...In the end?  none of us can do much about that...but while you're  waiting for  that DOE..it might not be a bad  think to take  some tests?
