OOC #24
So, had another 'I've never done that before' moment today...a couple of them on the same project, in fact...
A friend of mine is running an Andy Warhol-themed Halloween event this weekend...and she asked me to paint a giant-sized version of one of Warhol's Campbell's Soup cans to use as a photo prop (people stand behind it, so it looks like they're in the can...) Never painted one of Warhol's works before...it's not completely done, but it's at a point where I think I can finish it in another hour or so tomorrow (she's only paying me $100 for it, and the corrugated plastic sheet I used for it cost a little over $20, so I'm not too eager to spend a huge amount of time on it. She's still getting a screaming deal, but I like her shows, so I said yes to the price. If she doesn't like it, I'll fall back on the old, "Well, you should have said yes to the $200 price, because then I would have taken a lot more time and care with it."
But, while I was in the middle of painting it (on my front lawn, since there's no room for a 4' wide, 5.5' tall plastic sheet to lay down to paint in my apartment), I got what I thought was a runny nose...until a drop of blood fell onto the can (and not in one of the areas I was painting red). I've bled on a lot of my projects before...but this is the first time I've bled on one of my painting projects.
So I spent another hour and a half painting out there with a kleenex rolled up and stuffed in one nostril. I can only imagine what the neighbors think (aside from the one who walked by a couple of times...the first time he asked if I was 'getting artsy'...the second time he kept going on about how good it looked, so I did something right).
I still need to do one more coat of red (that's always the worst color...nobody makes a good, opaque red, it's always the most translucent color) and touch up a couple of things, then paint the rims at the top and bottom of the can. I'm skipping a few details, but...she wanted the $100 version...
Oh, and tonight was also the first rehearsal for my next show...The Drowsy Chaperone. It doesn't perform until late January, but because of the upcoming holidays, they started early to give us enough time to get around it. Like most of the shows I was in last year, I'm playing a character that shows up right at the end of the show, so they're using me to help fill in spots in the ensemble (I think they also just need another bass voice in the ensemble...most of the guys in there sound like tenors.) It's a fun show...I've worked on a production of it before, doing makeup, so it's familiar territory, and I actually know a few people in the cast (and the director, and producer, and music director), so I'm hoping it ends up being as much fun or more fun than the production I did before.
