OOC #26
1917 is brilliant. It's extremely well-written, the camera work is INCREDIBLE, the cast is a veritable Who's Who of World-Famous British Cinema with regards to male actors in their 50s or younger. It's shot in such a way that it feels like a series of very long takes...if you know what to look for, you can catch where they transitioned from one shot to the next, but most of them are imperceptible (and if you don't know what to look for, you'd never even notice the ones that are the 'easy' editing breaks).
But it is DEFINITELY a war movie. It's heavy. There are a lot of very sobering moments, and a few that might even get your eyes a little teary, depending on how empathetic you are. It's not a movie I would watch for light entertainment. When I first saw it, I walked out of the theater calling it the 'Saving Private Ryan' of World War I...and I still feel it, in a lot of ways. If you're into war movies, especially the ones that don't get carried away with trying to romanticize war, this is definitely one to catch.
But it is very definitely not a feel-good film. When the credits start rolling, I find myself letting out a sigh of relief...not that I've endured the film, but that this story that so gripped me is concluded and I'm back in a world that doesn't involve trench warfare, artillery fire, and enemy sharpshooters. I think you'd really like it, even though it doesn't have much of anything to do with WWI aviators. It's still got a very grim, real feel to it that seems like it'd strike a chord with you (just about anyone in this game, really).
