Re: OOC #26
I've kind of gotten to the point where I'm using my golf game to gauge my general stamina...I walk, both because it's cheaper to not rent a golf cart and because all the walking is good exercise...but when I started playing this year, by the time I finished nine holes, I was pretty much DONE.
Now, granted, today was kind of a special case...the temperature was in the 50s (unseasonable cold snap) and I had to take about ten minutes to just stand under a tree and wait for the rain and hail to blow over...but I got to the end of nine, and said to myself, "Hey...I feel like I'm good for nine more..." So I went into the clubhouse, paid for the other nine holes, and kept playing. Had to stop again for another ten minutes for a different rain/hail spat to come through (that's one problem with having your course right at the foot of the mountains...clouds run up against the mountains, pile up, and start storming, and tend to rain--or whatever--harder there than anywhere else in the valley). Got to the end of eighteen, and thought, "Y'know...I feel really good right now. I should be more tired than this, that's a LOT of walking over a lot of uneven terrain." Even my on-again-off-again knee was doing great (granted, I wore a compression brace...but that's well over a mile by the time you start to calculate in all the additional distance walked off the centerline from tee to green and between holes, and this course has a LOT of up-and-down changes to it, which makes it even more taxing to walk...) Not only did I walk away from it feeling pretty good, but it only took me three hours to do eighteen holes, by myself, and I wasn't rushing. Considering the last few times I've gone out, it's taken two and a half hours, playing in a threesome or foursome, to do nine holes, I'm pretty impressed (I typically expect nine holes, at that course, to take just over two hours).
The bad news? I lost two balls...both on the same hole. Had a very anemic tee shot, decided to try hitting another one that went WAY right and actually hit the side of one of the houses built along the edge of the course (glad it didn't hit a window! And glad nobody was out in the yard!) Tried hitting another one, that didn't go as high or as far right, but still went right through the fence and into someone else's yard...so I decided to just play my original ball, in spite of the bad tee shot. That hole was my worst of the day...not counting the two failed provisional tee shots, I still ended up five over par on that hole...) In spite of that, I felt like it was a really good day for me. My game isn't consistent...but it's trending toward that, and improving. If I could get a solid grasp of chipping and putting, I'd be a threat out there...too many holes where I should have had a birdie or par and ended up three-putting the hole...)
But I'd also been mildly concerned because I've had a slightly increased cough over the past couple of days (I've also had increased sinus drainage, due in large part to the shift in weather). I've had chronic sinus issues and post-nasal drip for years, now, so I have a little bit of a chronic cough as a result, which doesn't help your peace of mind with the whole Covid-19 thing going on. But if it's Covid, it's a SUPER mild case, because in spite of the cough and the sinus issues, I was not having any problems with being short of breath out there (I mean, yeah, there were a couple of hills where I was panting a bit by the time I got to the top, but ANYONE would be out of breath pushing a set of clubs up those hills. I still recovered quickly enough to tee off without significant delay...)
