Re: OOC: # 27
In reply to Mila (msg # 971):
There are also, if the more suspicious reports are to be believed (and I see little reason they shouldn't be, in this case) a certain amount of agents provocateurs, who capitalize on the kind of mob mentality that tends to proliferate in mass protests. They commit violent acts in hopes of inciting riots to discredit the protestors and their cause. I'm sure there are also just plenty of people who see it as an opportunity to indulge in some criminal behavior under the anonymity of being just another face in a huge crowd.
I don't think either of those are the primary reason riots start, as explained before...but I do believe that both exploit protests and riots for their own ends.
The guy I order the majority of my makeup supplies through used to work in Hollywood. He left LA, and the film industry in general, after the Rodney King riots, because he wanted a safer place to raise his family...not just because of the riots, he also didn't care for the environment that inspired them. I get the business owners' choice to relocate...the long-term impacts of riots aren't something the rioters ever think about...I hope things don't get too bad as a result of it all. Just because I understand why people riot doesn't mean I think they're right to do it (just want to make that clear)--but I've also got friends who have some disturbing stories about how they're treated by police.
And, Lizzy, keeping my fingers crossed for you! The past few days have been a little concerning, because we're rehanging lights for our Halloween shows...that involves knocking a lot of dust loose from the tops of the pipes and the rafters, and in any other year I'd just dismiss the resulting coughs as allergies...but this year, every cough is a reminder to think about where I've been, who I've been around...and wonder the same thing about the guy I'm working with when he's the one coughing...
