Re: OOC  # 31

I think limbo dancing is more of a Caribbean thing.  In Hawaii, you're more likely to get variations on the hula and fire-dancers (I've got some friends who moved from Hawaii to Utah...both of them and their oldest son are fire performers...absolutely incredible to watch!)

So, northern Utah is so hot today that our amp rack overheated about five minutes into our first show and killed the sound system.  The sound board operator and I managed to track down the problem and reset it (after the rest of the show had already been cancelled...)  And I've got a fan set up right in front of the amp rack to keep air moving through it to try and prevent a repeat.  And a couple of the performers half-jokingly got mad at me for fixing the sound system so they had to do a second and third show tonight... *laugh*

Re: OOC  # 31

Addendum:  it was so hot that half the cast was wobbly-legged from heat exhaustion at the end of the second show, so they cancelled the third show.  This is one of those days when I'm glad I'm on salary...my paycheck isn't affected at all by it.

But the amp racks didn't blow through the second show, so the fan I set up apparently helped.  Crazy summer this year...I hope the standard weather trend doesn't hold with August being 5-10 degrees hotter on average than July...and I really hope the rest of July doesn't end up being like this.  I'm surviving because I wet down a towel and wrap it around my neck, and wet down my hair at the start of each show so it's like having a big evaporative cooler on top of my head...but there have been a couple of days where I've caught myself on the verge of heat exhaustion.  The problem is, this stage was never designed to be enclosed, and wasn't designed by anyone with any awareness of the problems of heat in a stage environment, so once you get upstage of the proscenium arch, the air is basically dead.  Our HVAC department (or the excuse for one that we used to have, because the guy we have now is really good) installed two attic vent fans at the top of the stage...but they move an absolutely pitiful amount of air.  They're rheostat-controlled, so they don't turn on until it's over 100 degrees...but it's so hot in there that they NEVER TURN OFF.  They need some real air circulation, because it's when the performers are off-stage, waiting to go out to perform, that they get overheated the worst.

Re: OOC  # 31

So, the heat KO'd our sound system again today, this time in the second show.  With the director sitting backstage watching the show on the video monitor...killed it at almost exactly the same instant in the show as last night.  Same four amps, tripping the same overload switch on the same power strip.

They've at least simplified the show somewhat to account for the heat.  Three illusions taken out, and the two dancer/assistants don't have any costume changes.  It's still pretty brutal...I was teetering on the brink of a migraine for most of the evening because of the heat.  Even tonight, at the movie theater afterwards, when I was changing the showtime information in our display cases out front, every time I walked out the door, it was like someone smacked me in the face.  Usually, by the time the sun's been down an hour or so, it's relatively comfortable outside, even on a really warm day...right now, it's so hot that even the mosquitos that normally come out at sundown are like, "Nah...we'll starve, thanks..."

The Peak district is nice, I've been walking there a couple of times, though I would probably try and avoid walking through Stanage marsh in the rain next time I go there.

Re: OOC  # 31

Well, it was bound to happen to us at some point, but we had one of the illusions go slightly awry today in the last show.  Something got stuck, or bound up, somehow, and the music ran out with the assistant still stuck in the illusion.  So, we moved it upstage of the curtain and kept going, with someone else taking her job of pushing the next illusion out to the magician while the rest of us frantically worked on getting the assistant out of the box as smoothly as possible.

Messed up our rhythm for the show, a little bit, but aside from the curtain dropping and the magician awkwardly turning to the audience and saying, "She should be fine...I think...", and the singer not realizing she was supposed to exit after pushing out the next illusion and almost getting stuck on stage with him for THAT entire bit, the audience never saw anything that gave away we were all straining to keep our legs under ourselves for the rest of the show.

Live theater...gotta love it!
