Re: OOC # 36
So, I'm having a rough week with technology. Sunday, my cell phone decided it didn't like the text messaging app...ANY text messaging app, basically, that worked with the basic SMS system (stuff like FB Messenger and WhatsApp were fine). It would randomly bounce the cursor back to the start of the message while I was typing, and wouldn't send messages (I think I tried to send about twenty all day, and four made it through.) I've had my phone for 8.5 years, so I figured it's time to upgrade...
Next day, text is working JUST FINE.
Also decided it was finally time to upgrade my work laptop (at the movie theater) to Win10, from Win 8.1 (got sick of getting informed that there were system updates that needed to be downloaded, and when I told the computer to download them, it said there was nothing there to download...) I have a neighbor who's a little bit of a tech guru (he's also the guy who helped me fix my snowblower back before winter really kicked us in the teeth, so he's good for a lot more than computer help!) who finagled a flash-drive for me with the Win10 Upgrade software (even though Microsoft has officially discontinued free upgrades)...when I first got it on my computer, the laptop 'forgot' that it has a wi-fi transceiver, so I couldn't connect to anything. It's done that before, I just reboot it and, lo and behold, WI-FI...
Except I rebooted it, and it kept spitting error messages back at me and wouldn't boot back up again. Googled the error message and found out it was a software conflict (Win10 and Avast Anti-Virus do not play well together). Booted it up in safe mode, uninstalled Avast, and we're up and flying on Win10...
And then I tried to print out the schedule for next week. Now, my printer is throwing an error code which, according to the company website, means the printer heads have overheated. Except that, in the help article where they explain that, they say that you can open up the printer like you're going to replace the cartridges, turn it on, and the cartridges will traverse to their normal replacement position. I turn mine on, and the cartridges don't move AT ALL. Worked just fine last week...and 95% of what I use it for is printing out schedules, so it's not like it sees a lot of wear and tear. But it IS a few years old. I have another one at home that's the same make and model, I'll bring it in and try it sometime (not tomorrow night...we're doing lighting focus tomorrow night until all hours...)
And just as I was finishing up looking all that up, the laptop FORGOT its wi-fi connection was there, again...
It's been a long evening, and I've only been here for a couple of hours.
