Re: Hermes Chapel

The Chapel was not hard to find, though it was in a sorry state. it was covered in layers of dust and the pews were all in disorder. Ethan sighed as he rolled up his sleeves. His silent prayer was that he would have the strength to carry on. He had just taken on two jobs, medic and chaplin and there was still counseling and everything else that went along with being a Chaplin. It only took a bit of looking to find cleaning supplies. Scrubbing the Chapel took much longer. He did it right, scrubbing ceiling to floor and everything in between. He had to scrub the floors on his hands and knees, which brought back memories of Loyola University. Of course the work also kept his mind off the little girl. He would be saying prayers for her soul until the day he died. He put his MP-3 player on and the earbuds in to make the time go faster. He sang along with AC/DC:

I was caught
In the middle of a railroad track (Thunder)
I looked 'round,
And I knew there was no turning back (Thunder)
My mind raced
And I thought what could I do? (Thunder)
And I knew
There was no help, no help from you (Thunder)
Sound of the drums
Beatin' in my heart
The thunder of guns!
Tore me apart
You've been - thunderstruck!
Rode down the highway
Broke the limit, we hit the ton
Went through to Texas, yeah Texas
And we had some fun
We met some girls,
Some dancers who gave a good time
Broke all the rules, played all the fools
Yeah, yeah, they, they, they blew our minds
And I was shakin' at the knees
Could I come again please.
Yeah the ladies were too kind
You've been - thunderstruck, thunderstruck
Yeah yeah yeah, thunderstruck
Oh, thunderstruck, yeah
Yeah
Now we're shaking at the knees
Could I come again please.
Thunderstruck, thunderstruck
Yeah yeah yeah, thunderstruck
Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah
Said yeah, it's alright
We're! Doing fine
Yeah, it's alright
We're! Doing fine
So fine
Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah,
Thunderstruck, thunderstruck, thunderstruck
Whoa baby, baby, thunderstruck
You've been thunderstruck, thunderstruck
Thunderstruck, thunderstruck, thunderstruck
You've been thunderstruck

Oh now what? I thought he was serious about having a chaplin, but...

...I am sorry God. I should trust you more. I will remember this lesson.
He was shocked and amazed. His eyes went wide and he ran both hands through his hair. He blew out, hard. "Uhhh...well I need this place cleaned, scrubbed top to bottom. The pews need to be in two rows. The confessional should be built in that corner, the dark one. People are more likely to confess in the dark." He was a bit overwhelmed. He opened the crate and found candles, holy water, insense burners, ampules, a large cross, some paraphenalia from other religions, ones he was unfamiliar with. He wouldn't even know how to set them up.

He decided not to set them up for fear of doing it wrong. "Those small shelves over there are for candles. Devout light them when they pray, sort lighting the prayer's way to heaven. All but the skinney ones, those go in the candleobras. The candleobras go up by the alter." There was so much to do he had trouble figuring out what came first. "The cross should go up behind the alter..."

He helped. He didn't just give out orders, that wasn't the Jesuite way. Orders were to be followed and given. He was able to help and so he did. It took far less time with nine able bodied marines helping. When they were done, just as with Nigel he told them about Mass tonight and told them to tell their friends. He thanked them all, shook each of their hands and offered to bless them if they wanted...

the 4 hours  went  fast, the marines worked steady...most of the  work was done, thought there  was still some to do.

Now and again a Civie  would pop thier heads in to see what was going on...then move off to tell other folks in "town"..or  go down to the  housing level to spread the  word.

Re: Hermes Chapel

The Marines had been such a blessing. They left and most of the work had been accomplished. There were still loose ends to handle, polishing the brass and putting the lectern into place among them. He could handle it, though. It was no longer overwhelming. He worked with earbuds in place switching now to something classical and soft to get him into the proper mood for Mass.

When he was done, or at least as done as possible, he knelt in the center of room and crossed himself. He asked God to consecrate this place and make it a safe haven for those who sought its refuge. He asked for a good turn out. Most of all though he asked for guidance. Since arriving here he had felt the hand of providence was in this. The fact that his skills could be of use, the fact that the Chapel had gone unused, and the curiousity of the civilians had led him to believe there could be room for God on this vessel.

He sprinkled a bit of holywater onto the floor and toosed it to the four corners of the room. He nodded and went over to light a candle. His candle was for the poor girl he had tried to help. Then he went to the doorway and prepared to welcome any who wished to come, even if it was just the curious.

Re: Hermes Chapel

Angela had went to the Rec deck for some off time to herself, and a bottle of rum...until she overheard a group talking about the Chapel being opened for the first time.

She made her way to the chapel to go check it out leaving her unopened bottle on the table. She walked up to the doors where Ethan was standing and bowed her head to him. "Good afternoon Father." She didn't waist anymore time except for his greeting, making her way straight to the candles. She picked up the one burning candle and used it to light fifteen others slowly, saying a small, silent prayer to those who had fallen as she lit them.

Re: Hermes Chapel

A hint of a smile crept across his face. Then she greeted him as "father." he was quick to correct, "I cannot claim that title any longer. I will answer to Preacher, but I perfer Ethan." he stood aside and let her pass, following at a distance. He watched her lighting candles with purpose. rare these days for someone to have so many prayers, but she obviously knew what...or whom she prayed for. He stood silently, simply watching.

She was pretty...but there was something about her that was not quit right. He shook his head. Left the clergy to find the perfect woman and you'll have left for nothing. When finally she turned back around he motioned to the big closet like thing in the back corner. "I have the confessional opened. The Church won't recognize any absolution I give, but God will. Besides its more about the act of confessing than whom you confess too. I will be holding a Mass this evening, if you wish to participate you are welcome. Please tell others as well. Even those who are simply curious are welcome."

He waited for her to decide about confession...

Re: Hermes Chapel

As she turned around she lowered her head to Ethan. "I'm sorry Ethan, but I don't need confession...Confession is of the old way, when people didn't have self control like we do now." She looked up to him with a strong look. "I only came to set things right with my old wing mate who had fallen on mars during a harsh attack that nearly took my life. I promised them I would not forget them and I have fulfilled that promise to them." She looked to the confession booths then back to him. "I was stuck in a closet to recover for five years. I barely stay in my quarters which is much bigger."

She moves passed him but stops before  passing the door frame. "I'm sorry, but I will let others know that you are open." She looked back, looking like she was near to tears, before heading out the door, back to the rec dec.

Well if all the crew were as troubled as this girl, her had a lot of work ahead of him. Perahps he should trouble the captain? He went off himself to locate Hack.

Re: Hermes Chapel

He smiles at the man's sentiments about being clean. Cleanlyness was next to Godlyness. It was necessary, though. "In ancient times, Church was held in the homes of believers. God only asks that we give him our best, not that we are perfect."

The next bit was harder. "Dealing with the loss of friends and loved ones is the most difficult of tasks we are given in this life. Occupying our minds with other things is a very good option, 'Idle hands are the Devil's workshop,' after all. Let me ask you something, my friend. Is it simply that they are gone that troubles you? Or is it the method of their departure? This is a militaey vehicle, death lives with us daily. I believe you were prepared to loose commrades, just not over something so...unsportsmanlike...as this."

Ethan points to the candles. "THose are prayer candles. My guess is that if you light one and pray for the souls of the departed then you may feel a little better. Come back tomorrow and the day after and so on. Tell God how you feel. Tell Him your troubles and sorrows, your hurts and your happyness. Let him listen to you and comfort you. I will pray with you, if you feel better that way."

He noddes, "Right now the hurt is fresh. Give it a little time. You may find tht it fades. It may fade faster is you choose to think of the fun and good times you had with your friends. If you need, I can prescribe something to help you sleep. I find that above all sleep helps heal wounds, both physical and mental."

Ethan had to pause a long while. He went over to the woman and placed his hand on her child's head, a silent prayer for the babe, and then he crossed them both. He spoke so that all could hear. "I can offer knowledge of what is called the old way. I can teach you about the one true God and how He has shown himself to his different creations differently. The precepts of this faith are simple: Put others first, serve others, forgive others, and pray for even your enemy that they might find their way to the gates of Heaven. How is this done? It is against our nature as Humans to love others, and put others first. It is done with fiath. I have faith. All of you have it too, even if you do not acknowledge it.

Tonight we celebrate the sacrament of the Lords Supper. I ask you to join me."

He stopped the boy, because this was important. "Loving your enemys and even praying for them does not require passivity. If someone pushes you, you should put your guard up and stand your ground. If they push you again, push back hard. Understand that God expects you to protect yourself, not allowing others to hurt or kill you."

When everyone took seats he went back up front and took a basket of wafers. He took one and passed it around, expecting the others to understand they should take one as well. When it had made its way through the small group he took it back and sat in front of the pews. This was a solomn occassion but not one that required ceremony. He broke the wafer "Christ came to Earth to bring mankind closer to God. On the eve of his arrest and crusifixion he ate the Feast of the Passover with his closest friends. He said 'Do this in rememberance of me.' We break the bread to represent the body of Christ, broken for our transgretions." He ate the bread and then went to a trey of tiny cups of wine. He took one and passed the rest around as before. "We drink the wine to represent the blood of Christ, spilled for our sins." He drank and then let the solomness of the event settle in.

"Thank you all for coming. Though Christ was killed, he rose again after 3 days. That is the hope we carry. He rose and returned to Heaven where we will one day meet Him." He points to the confessional, "I will hear confession now."

He went and took the place of the priest in the confessional.

Both boys looked up to ethan as he smoke, the  younger one nodded with a slight bit of staisfaction. The  younger one  says,..That's more like  it...I hear some people think we should just give in to the demons...some others  think we should join them..not me... Mr. Kane  was a nice man...he was one of   the Hermes Marines....when i get old enough....i'm gonna be a pilot...and i'm going to take out  whole ship loads of demons, for what they did to him!
The Older boy simply put  a hand on the yonger one's shoulder...the older lad  was closer to signing up. He had a grim look about him.

The widow  of the MArine, still holding her child said, someone  back on earth, had  an old bible....they said somethign  about hating  other people....when that book was written...they did not know about Demons....

The Older  fellow held  up a hand to quiet everyone,..some say the Angels who were the Keepers of earth, wrote that book...to try and keep law  and oeder on the planet...others think its   just a collection of stoires, for the same reason...the older half of the book, speaks of many wars..with god helping those one his side...they say that was the last of the Angels in power, who aided those who did not  take up  the Demon's  ways....I don't know  about any of that...can't remember more then a few stories passed down by my great great grand mother. But  if there is  a God? The there is a devil..then he grins  at ethan, we already know there are angels and Demons!

After the  small service,  the poeple ask when the next time he will do somethign like this...Only the  widow  and the older man try the coffessional...the woman feels guilty for feeling attracted to one of the young pilots she meets as she works as a waitress...she feels she is dishonoring his husband's memories...The Older man...only confesses a deep hate towards the Demons and  any who side with them...he is eaten away at being too old to fly, and  would not  be accepted for Combat service...even in the ship's gunnery section..at best..he could  only join as a support member...with no fighting , unless the ship was boarded...

Re: Hermes Chapel

Ethan had a lot of work to do. He had his own philosophy about this, but it would take time to compile and write down. "Lets save the theology for later. I have much to teach you if you want. Sunday mornings I will hold what amounts to a service where I teach theology. I will hold this service three times a week and I will be available for confession whenever I am not on other duties."

In the confessional he listens to the woman first. "I understand you feelings of guilt, but God made us all as sexual creaures. You should not feel ashamed for wanting another man. I would caution your rushing that aspect of a relationship, though. It is meant for marriage, so at the very least be sure this is a man you will marry first. Go with God, your sins are absolved."

The man is more difficult. "Listen, hatred is a difficult thing. God made us with the full capability of emotion, but the only manual on its use is the Bible. We are to hate sin but not the sinner. It is a difficult distinction. I would ask you to pray earnestly for God to remove the hate from your heart. Think of it this way, should we be boarded you may be called on to fight. Who fightes better, the man who hates or the one who has a clear mind to think and plan. In any case, I absolve you of your sins. Go with god."

His quarters are spartan, but he needed little. A bed, a closet, a sink and toilet, bare walls except for a mirror, and a footlocker. He went to the box of supplies and found a wooden wall cross and an "open heart" statue of Jesus. he hung the cross and put the statue beside the sink.

He unpacked his own belongings. He stowed his pistol, deciding it was probably bad form to carry two. He hung his clothing, stored his personal items in the footlocker, and washed up. He looked at the bed. He wasn't really tired. he decided to go and find a drink.

Re: Hermes Chapel

After an extensive training session Justin showered changed and strolled through the ship, headed nowhere in particular. Focused on the messes he needed to find solutions for, both for his peace of mind and to help his friends. So it was that he found himself in the quiet chapel, seated on one of the ire pews. Curiously he glanced about, wondering how he ended up there, first things first which meant heading to the Bridge to meeting with Libby.

Hunter walks to the entrance and takes of his boots before entry, placing them to one side.
In with a small carry bag, then uses the changing area to change in to
a Light Gi, with black belt and two white strikes, at the other end is a single gold band.
He uses the wash areas to clean symbolically.
Then finds a quiet corner to kneel and meditate.
Eyes closed he contemplates his inner self.

I am one.
I am balance.
The waves flows the sand stirs and remains.
So shall I

Hunter consider the last 24 hours, the first was due to the fact of ignorance and assumption of danger facing both him and Xyran.
The second was his fault he should have checked the situation further before disturbing the situation.
"So learn Hunter or die", he snarls to him self.
Hunter rises fluid and deadly, his blade whips in a fast Iaido draw followed by a series of Kata's, as he works up a sweat.
Then sheathing the sword he moves into his martial arts kata, driving him self hard into each set seeking perfection and peace though his art.
Hunter continues for some time or until he is disturbed

Then allows him self to come down of his high and reaches into his pack and removes a small stand and a polished piece of granite, and places it in front of him

As he studies the stone he considers Sensei's teaching
"Hunter San consider the stone, of your land it is hard unyielding yet water can break it time can shatter it".
"The way bends as it passes along the path what is true today is true tomorrow."

Non-Coms Quarters

Having come across the former chapel during her walk last night, Tarja had felt that the space would be perfect for her small to train in without the whole world watching them or as a space for her to train and unwind in.

Dressed in a pair of lycra shorts and a vest top that nicely showed off her muscular arms and legs, Tarja would enter the gym  a little ahead of the others and begin arranging the mats out on the floor in preparation for the morning’s session.

Meari walked in carrying a large duffle bag, and wearing skin tight spandex looking pants, and a spandex type top that worked as a bra as well, looks like maybe the Udenese equivalent of a sports bra, but covers a little less than the average sports bra.

Meari put her bag down, she did have her combat boots on and her dual Udenese pair knives as well. This session was for Udenese Martial Arts so most likely no weapons training but she brought a few just in case someone wanted to try some of the other weapons she brought.

Meari then began to stretch out, her powerful muscles on display with her tight outfit, Meari was extremely muscular but she was also very sexy and feminine it was a fine line Meari was walking though on being too muscular to be feminine and sexy.

Meari then nodded at Tarja," Good morning Tarja, this was a very good idea, then we have the tunnel run tonight. Who has reported in that they are coming?"

Hearing Meari enter, Tarja would look up from where she was arranging the mats to see the tall Udenese woman enter wearing an outfit that showed off her muscular physique and carrying a duffel bag which Tarja would give a curious look ”I haven’t received any messages, but I did strongly infer to team that they should attend…mech riders can join if they like” she replied suspecting the training would hold more value to the AI than the riders.

A few minutes later Belle, Andruss and Balker would arrive in PT gear, with Tarja waving them over to join them ”we give others a few minutes to join us then Meari can get us started” Tarja said to the group as she started doing some stretches in preparation.

There were a few moments of silence with everyone seemingly waiting for someone else to volunteer first until Tarja decided that she ought to step up to get her ass handed to her first ”I will do it” Tarja said as she stepped forward onto the mat facing Meari.

After flexing her fingers and rolling her shoulders Tarja would raise her hands into the first Xatava. She was under no illusion that she didn’t really stand a chance but she would at least try and give a good showing of herself.

Once she was ready she would nod her head to signal that she was ready to go.

Also despite her executing the Xatava correctly Tarja's inexperience with the technique meant that she was only able to deliver a glancing blow before Meari swept her legs out from under her.

Using the momentum of her fall Tarja would quickly roll across the mat and back onto her feet ready to begin again "Give her hell corps!" someone called good naturedly from behind her as Tarja went to make her next move.

Tarja was doing well it was just Meari's physical attributes and experience was too much for her, and Meari was able to get Tarla in a hold and then did a martial throw of Tarja, but Tarja did land mostly on her feet but did land on a knee.

With Meari not only more experienced in Udenese martial arts but also far larger and heavier than her, it was no surprise to Tarja find herself slowly losing the bout. Her attacks easily repulsed by Meari and with it taking all of her concentration to block those that came back her way. Yet despite this she would continue to push the attack hoping to find an opening right up until Meari threw her bodily over her shoulder.

It would take Tarja a few moments to recover from that particular move, though to her credit she would get back to her feet and get ready to go again as the rest of the unit continued to shout encouragement to the both of them ”ok, third time is charm I think, yes?”

The third, and what would prove to be the final bout would start like the others with Tarja moving in close, to deny Meari her superior reach, and launch a series of attacks in the hope of driving her back and pinning her against a wall so she couldn’t escape. Unfortunately on this occasion Tarja would get a little too close and find herself being grappled by the far larger and stronger Meari who despite Tarja’s best efforts would bring her down to the ground and put her into a decidedly painful lock ”Ah Ah setä! setä!…I yield!” Tarja called in a pained voice until Meari released her hold and helped her back to her feet whilst the rest of the team paired off to begin sparring with one another ”I am quick study…though not quick enough apparently” Tarja replied as she tried to flex some life back into her arm, with the experience being a little too reminiscent of being tormented by her older brothers ”you will have to teach me more I think” she said, interested in learning more regardless of whether or not the unit adopted it into their training regime.

She wasn’t the strongest person around by a long shot but it was clear that she could more than hold her own and anyone picking a fight with her would certainly regret it.

Meari and Tarja spent most of the day practicing, Meari showing Tarjs vey advanced moves and how Tarja could take down a bigger stronger opponent. Tarja did extremely well and Mearu was very pleased. " Excellent work I need to eat and relax see you at the shed in the morning.

Meari headed back to her quarters for the night, then first thing in the morning headed to the Hanger Dec and the AI compound.

Re: Hermes Chapel

Tarja would spar and train together for a large chunk of the day, chatting as they did so, with Tarja going on to to introduce Meari to the world of weightlifting with Tarja spotting her on the bench press.

After Meari had called it a day, Tarja would stop awhile longer before leaving the gym for a much needed shower and what little rest she could get.
