Appigan’s Quarters

Located in the marine areas is a 4-person room billeted for enlisted ranks. The massive ship Hermes is full of partially used rooms and this is one of them. The occupants have done a few things to make it a home. Given the half occupancy they have chosen to make good use of the unofficial doubling of their space.

Each occupant is a combat medic. As the same trade but perhaps the only of their trade on the ship they are kept in on/off rotation. When one is one duty the other is off. Thus they rarely see each other. Effectively they have the room to themselves.

On opening the door reveals it is longer room likely to fit in with the Hermes structure. On either side of the door are boot racks with a floor and one shelf. Each occupant has afforded an extra pair of combat boots, running shoes and a pair of slippers. A horsehair welcome mat has been placed where you will natural step.

Above the boot racks is the boxes holding the emergency gear. Respirators and one-size-fits-all emergency suits. The first aid kit for this room looks well used.

On the each side walls then comes two wide lockers. Each current occupant having doubled up on their lockers. Shame for them to go to waste. As marines their uniforms, rifles and light armour sets would be kept inside. Heavy space combat armour is kept at the armoury for refit between missions.

When Appigan’s main locker is open it has pictures, printed out from the printer, tapped to the inside. They show family, hunts and forested hills. There is his medical satchel, medical fanny and a sack of apples.

Next is the bunk beds. The top bunk mattress on both is used for storage. The lower bunks see use. When inspection is coming they are tightly made up. On other days they are made well but not perfect. Each bunk’s frame is actually drawers that slide out. The mattress itself is on a board that hinges up for a man sized space used to keep the dress uniform in excellent pressed condition.

In one back corner is a work desk with a ship’s terminal, printer and drawers. A figurine of a white tailed buck with wide antlers sits on top. Magnets in its feet keep it sticking to a metal plate screwed into the shelf.

In the other back corner a card table is pushed into it. In other rooms it would sit out for socializing. These two roommates that never seen each other decided instead to have more space. Four black folding chairs lean against the wall. With them is a short ironing board. Under the table is a bar fridge, chosen for its low height fitting under the table.

Utility shelving on the back wall contain a few items. There is an electric kettle, a hot plate, clothes iron, plastic pitcher, plastic bowls and a box of metal cutlery.  There is two electronic picture frames each cycling through pictures of each occupant. Appigan’s  shows forests, hunted kills and various people.

This “stateroom” is without a window. There is a faint hum from nearby Hermes machinery.

Appigan sets up the two chairs so that Oria and he can sit on equal footing. There is enough space to set up the card table, if wanted, in the middle so there is a bit of space for them to move around.

He had just read/recited one of his Angel poems to Oria. An apple has been given to her and he has started on one too.

Oria Looked to the apple and stood as he readied the chairs. "Some angels have found these fruits of yours to be highly toxic to us." She tells him, making her way to the chair and sitting down, all without taking her eyes off the apple. She then brought it up to her lips but only to give it a sniff. "This would be my first time encountering this type of plant."

Re: Apple'a quarter
"Wha? Really? Damn."

Appigan rubs the back of his head.

"Well the strictly safest thing to do is to do medical work up but that takes a few days. Survival training recommends some quick versions that give fair but no absolute garauntee.

We can rub a cutting on a neutral area like your forearm and wait to see if there is a reaction. Allergies should be triggered by the smell making twinges. An unopened apple is sealed by its skin. Here, I'll cut a wedge off mine.

Technically apple seeds carry a trace amount of poison in them. Its called cyanide. Its a very very small amount.

Uhh, yeah, don't eat the seeds. One or two by accident doesn't hurt a human. A whole bunch would affect a human. I wonder if those Angels you mentioned ate the seeds."

By now Geoffry has taken his bowie knife in its sheath out from a bunk drawer. He carefully splits his apple in half. From the unchewed half he cuts open a wedge. This shows the core inside where the seeds are. Turning the curved point of the knife he scoops out the seed area from the wedge. He offers the fresh wedge to Oria.

"Try the skin rubbing, if you are okay with that.

It would be brave fo you to try so. I should point out that you are with a medic and my medical satchel is in my locker. Short of going doing the lab work this is the best test coniditions we are going to find."

Appigan had continued to be a pleasant host to his visitor Oria.

His comm activates. Being a medic he got emergency calls and treated every call like it could be one. He quickly answered.

Jesse Dalton:
Appigan, are you up yet?

"Yeah, I'm up. Please state the nature of the medical emergency?"

A bit surprised at hearing the prompt reply.

This is Jesse Dalton, I was just wondering when it would be a good time that I could ask you for a personal meeting.

Knowing that others around her as she walked could also hear, she kept the topic...void of her actual business.

Appigan ponders for a moment.

Guess she has a health concern. Hope she's not being discrete because she's pregnant.

"Well I have a pr... patient with me right now. I'll have to uhm get back to you."

Gosh this is awkward a lonely princess in my bedroom and a pregnant black ops on the phone.

"Should be on duty in an hour. If its really urgent the Med Lab is open and there is a clinic in the civilian sector."

Ok, she stated bluntly.  I have a few business ends that I need to tie up.  When it is available for you, you can just com me back.

She ends it and heads back to the Rec Dec to see if she can find this "flight to Elbow" and perfect her piloting skills.  Or to see who else may be around.

Re: Apple's quarters
Appigan and Oria talked for half an hour. Half english and half Angel as a way of practicing language. Appigan showed Oria a few more of his amatuer ancient Angel poems. He was pleased of her courteous comments. A few revisions where made. They agreed to meet again, exchanging emails and comms.

Then Oria was politely excused so Appigan could get ready.

He used the shared washing area down the hall for a quick shower. Dressed into uniform. As per SOP for a ship in a warzone he put on his pistol and knives. He picked up his medical satchel. From one of cabinets he took out some pregnancy test kits.

He sends out a comm, "Appigan to Jesse. Your now the top of the list. Where did you want to meet?"

Appigan listens to Jesse's call from the Rec Dec.

"Well, as medic I do recieve patients here at my quarters. If it is a serious medical issue of course go to medbay but if you want some private advice come on down. You'd be surprised how often it happens."

Patient?  Medical?  she stammered out trying not to laugh.  No silly.  Nothing of that accord.  But sure, I'll be there in a few.

She grabbed her drink and went about wandering until she came to Apples quarters.  Doing a customary knock, she awaited for a response to enter or be let in.

Apple opens the door.

"Come in"

Now expecting company he left to the two fold out chairs in the center. Since it wasn't medical he had put the satchel away.

"So what's up?"

Appigan's pad buzzes and beeps. He picks it up to look at a message from Calhoun.

"Son of a.."

He stops himself. He clears his throat to compose himself in front of the not-patient Jesse.

Re: Apple's quarters
Before the com went off on Apple, she jostled her posture and balance a bit trying to compose a normal type of question.

That girl, that you and...she said waving her hands about.  That other pilot, was up on the sims with earlier.  I, uhm, went and talked to her.  Ingrid...well...I just have a question for you...something possibly related to her and I just need a bit of clarification.

"Ingrid, yeah. The marines have kinda of adopted her. She's one of the clearly good things we've done out here. Makes up for some of the harsher things we've been called on to do.

Given you were the Intel sniffer on the Olympus mission I'm guessing you are here about the investigation into her father."

He opens the locker and holds out an apple toward Jesse.

She nods her head about her father but motions with her hand that she wasn't interested in the apple at this moment.

Well, actually, yes, she said.  What do you know about her father?  She's quite the interesting kid.

Re: Apple's quarters
Appigan puts the apple away.

"Well we, meaning Calhoun, the other pilot was Kase, the sim chief and myself, saw her father in the sims. I took there as a way to get Ingrid out of her terror-shock. Worked.

Her family was captued by the avians. Separated off with her mother. Dad was apparently taken off to Alba, where we are heading, by a mix of aliens Lagran, wisp, avians. The sim chief made the recordings and those pilots tried alot to get closer.

I'd assume you are already tracking down where the sim footage came from in the first place.

Being there for the mental health of the patient it was best to return Ingrid to the medlab. The pilots had made several attempts but didn't succeed. The repeating the drama wouldn't be good for her."

Jesse tilted her head as Apple spoke about Ingrid. Yes, I gathered the gist after she spoke with me.  She's wanting to go in search of her father.

She took stock of everything he had said.

Do you know who her father is? she said softly.

Re: Apple's quarters
"I'm sure she would want to go but I can't allow it.

She's obsessed to the point suicidal and only a very short time out of the mental clam up. Mentally unfit to go. She could easily do something like rush ahead and get any ground team spotted and killed.

Her father, lets see. Well she was on ESN 700 Canary Hospital so he would have been part of the crew. You've got her last name and chip so you can back track his own records.

Look, something we didn't put down at first was that it was probably EDT who took them.

Uh hmm... Oria was saying she had some mental power she might be able to use on Ingrid. At first I was kinda iffy about it but since she came by for a visit I think it might be okay.

Hmm, why the curiousity on the father but not the mother?"

Ingrid's father is the answer to our war against the Angels, demons, whatever they want to call themselves, she said.  She took a sip of her drink.  Have you ever seen anything...happen...to one of them other than the obvious standard piloting and fighting?  I'm talking more like, behind closed doors.

Appigan tilts his head.

"Other than piloting and fighting... like what? Hanging out in a bar? hit by a car?"

He ponders for a moment.

"Whats your security clearance again? I'll need to see it.

Never mind... forget I asked. Hack had you kniving and raiding an ambassador. I don't want to know.

You not hear of the Chloring compound that melted them? I saw it used on the rescue mission. It was made up by the pool side bartender at less than five feet from me in the fight. Real pisser is that post battle the bartender went missing. We didn't find him when folks off loaded to the rescue ships.

We were still fighting and it was pretty ugly at the poolside. Grenade tossing, the vapour cloud, laser rounds. The girl that helped the bartender mix it was found dead in the pool. The pool was all drained of water before the fight so we were using it as a trench. That one pissed me off too.

But yeah, it was the bartender that was mixing it. I gave a description of him in my report from that battle.

Doctor Christie was given the task of figuring out what the compound was and how it worked. My guess on the Chlorine turned out to be right. I figured it would be a base agent as it would be available for pool maintenance.

When used on the demons it had an internal chemical reaction. Melted out the guts inside the body. Christie can tell you more from his work ups.

You think the bartender was EDT or a friend of the father?"

Re: Apple's quarters
Giving a nervous evil laugh.

My dear Appigan, her father is the scientist who helped make or create that "melting" thing.   We need to get him...and Ingrid may be our only way.  If you are fearful of what she's capable of...let her fly with me.  I'm not scared.

Her eyes were void of emotion other than wanting to rescue Ingrid's father.
