Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle

Zeig backs away as the situation slowly dawns on him.  He closes his eyes and begins to dig in the soft mud nearby.

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle

ZEIG can easily dig a hole in this type of soil, and soon does. I'd also assume some of you help him. It can only be but a few feet deep as the ground beneath that on the mound begins to turn to soupy mud and fill in as quickly as you can dig. All of the person is placed in the hole, and the soil is pushed back on top of him.

There was were no clothes or possessions on the man.

ZEIG is absolutely filthy afterwards. There is mud in his shoes and on the inside of his robes. The rain, which made the process all the more dirty, subsides just as the burial is complete.

Feel free to take any actions here and describe them.

The path through the swamp remains a scant couple of inches above water level apart from the occasional dips. By mid afternoon the party is in another forest much like the one on the other side of the swamp. The transition was slow and gradual. It is definitely nice to travel on dry(er) ground.

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle

[OOC] Zeig does the following quickly before departure. [/OOC]

"...Well, it won't do to travel like this.  If you'll wipe yourselves down with your clothes I'll have them cleaned in short order.  Of course they'll just get dirty again, but the mud is actually weighing me down at the moment."

Zeig wipes himself off, stepping out of his shoes and placing his feet on top of them before cleaning his feet I do it irl all the time.  He then proceeds to cast prestidigitation to clean his clothes thoroughly before stepping back into his shoes.

[OOC] If the others are willing he cleans their clothes as well with the same spell. [/OOC]

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle

DAI withholds his robes, preferring instead to clean them himself and remain fully robed. His hand glows with a light blueish energy as he runs it over his robes one section at a time, finishing the process easily within the hour this basic spell lasts.

"I'm fine...thanks."

He didn't really seem to react to the incident with the man, but he had helped bury him.

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle

Just after entering the forest the path basically disappears. JACK leads the party onwards in the same direction, finding bits and pieces of what is left as he goes. DC 5 Survival. You auto-succeed.

As the lot of you begin to worry about having to stop to camp for the night, a huge stone wall can be seen not 50' in front of you. The only structure that you've heard about on this part of the continent is the Temple of Fiends. This must be the place.

With careful, further investigation, a large set of wooden double doors can be seen a small distance down the wall. Together they are roughly 20' tall and 20' feet wide.

It is now roughly 7:15pm. The decision of how to proceed is upon you.

DAI approaches the gigantic doors, before turning on JACK.

"Are you? You're visibly shaking...what happened back in the forest...are you going to be okay for this? We'll probably have to fight...and kill whoever it is who took Sara, and this will be someone smart, thinking...like us...probably someone we've known...given the circumstances...can you do that...for Sara?"

After seeing what had happened DAI had to make sure JACK was still himself.

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle

Noticeably embarrassed for being distracted from his friend's demeanor by the historical site in front of him, Zeig turns back to take Jack's measure.

"Fate can be cruel sometimes, the best we can do is press onwards and try to protect what we can.  I want to protect Sara."

[OOC] Edit: too slow [/OOC]

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle

The walls on either side of the doors stretch beyond your field of vision. Now that you're closer to the structure, looking up, it's as tall as most of the trees.

The doors are probably somewhat newer than the rest of the structure, being made of wood, but they still look rather ancient as far as wood goes.

One of you gives the door a small push. It is extremely heavy, but moves ever so slightly. It looks as if you might be able to simply walk inside.

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle

Door pushes the door, walking with it as it opens. The massive door makes barely any noise as it opens. A few bats fly out into the night twenty feet above your heads.

It comes to rest opened at about a 15 degree angle. There is more than enough distance between the doors for a person to very comfortably walk by. It is pitch-black inside.

DAI is holding the crossbow he had pilfered from the goblin leader.

He casts Illuminate on his robes.

And walks in slowly.

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle

No need to play this out in-character. ZEIG, VIL lets you borrow his flint and steel. You hand it back to him after you're done striking up your lamp.

Also, just to save you some time:

Lamp, Common
A lamp clearly illuminates a 15-foot radius, provides shadowy illumination out to a 30-foot radius, and burns for 6 hours on a pint of oil. You can carry a lamp in one hand.

Finally, it being a common lamp, if you fall over or something of the like while holding it the oil will most likely spill out.

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle

VIL steps inside, holding his rapier aloft to maximize vision.

The double doors appear to open into a wide hallway, about 30' wide. On the other side of the hallway exactly opposite of the double doors through which you're entering, is another set of double doors. These are about half the size. To either side of you the hallway stretches beyond your vision.

There appears to be carvings on the outer wall of the hallway in range of the rapier's shadowy illumination. The inner wall of the hallway has hooks for placing torches about every 5' feet. Some of the hooks are missing, bent, or broken, and none of them currently contain torches.

The rest of the party peeks through the door. The howling of wolves can be heard in the distance outside.
