OOC: I have a single rank in use rope. Also, do you mean spool of endless rope? I don't know about any staff. I think there was an entangling staff in Complete Adventurer, but that's vines or something.

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle
The party continues onward. The path turns back into an old and broken road. Roland wakes back up during the trip but remains much more quiet.

The wispy bits of silk come and go in the trees to your sides and above you as you walk. They're actually kind of enchanting as they play with the bits of sunlight coming through the blanket of leaves above you.

Up ahead, all of a sudden, a few goblins bust out of the bushes on the left side and come running straight at you down the middle of the road. They seem to have clearly noticed you. Two of them have morningstars but one looks unarmed. The two chocobos stop their progress and eye them very carefully. The person(s) leading them can feel them tense up. Spot checks. Sense Motive checks. Initiative Rolls.

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle
I'm going to assume Sara and VIL are leading the two chocobos (due to their Charisma). DAI is probably nearby, still pleased with himself in his new ability to summon them. Jack is probably behind the bound up soldier, while ZEIG is probably walking near to the two injured guards on the box sides.

If your character would be somewhere else, please let me know in the OOC thread.

All off you can see the goblins running at you quite plainly. Nothing else out of the usual is apparent.
[Private to ZEIG: The goblins are completely unconcerned with you, and indeed, seeing you on the road was a surprise.][Private to VIL: This doesn't appear to be anything like the previous goblin raid on the party. The fact that one is unarmed is a clear indication something isn't quite right.][Private to DAI: They're coming right at us!][Private to JACK: Something's not quite right about this situation.]

Round 1:
22: Chocobos
22: VIL
[Private to GM:19: Big Spider]
18: ZEIG [Private to ZEIG: The +0 White Mage wins initiative again! UPDATE: erp, nevermind. VIL won.]
16: Bound Soldier
10: DAI
 8: JACK
 7: Sara
 5: Goblins
 [Private to GM: 4: Spiders]

People:

S = Sara

c = Chocobo
R = Roland and the other guard's makeshift sled. roughly 6'x8'
1 = Goblin (morningstar)
2 = Goblin (unarmed)
3 = Goblin (morningstar and javelin)

Objects/Terrain:
T = Tree
b = bush
| = Road
. = ground

-The Sled (S) counts as Large size and moving through it costs double movement. It has "soft" corners.
-Bushes (b) are difficult terrain (double movement) and going prone in them grants you total concealment (50% miss chance).
-Trees (T) have soft corners.

Battlemap will go here. Damnit. I forgot my laptop. Our beautiful forest map :(
Sorry this looks like a bad game of Dwarf Fortress, guys.

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle
DAI listens to ZEIG's words, then yells ahead at the goblins in tehir own native tongue, this would be the first time the others his friends would have heard him do this.

After this he draws out the loaded Heavy Crossbow, and moves into the bushes at his Southeast, dropping prone to stay out of sight of whatever was setting the goblins off.

[Private to teslas: "If you are running from something...we can help you fight, but you have to do it with us."]

Re: Chapter 2: The Ancient Cycle
Crossbows are triggered weapons, and therefore can be used without penalty while prone. Conventional firearms fall under the same rules, although I doubt you'll see many of those in this campaign. And yes, you can fire off ranged touch attack spells without penalty.

12:22, Today: teslas rolled 19 using 1d20+4. DC 10 for "c".
12:22, Today: teslas rolled 10 using 1d20+4. DC 10 for "C".

"They're running from something for sure. Keep your eyes open."

Goblin #2 begins to take a step and then drops to the ground, unmoving.

Goblin #1 and #3 continue to run towards the party. Their only response is "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! STRING CRAWLIES!"

Just as soon as the goblins make it near the party, two humongous spiders crawl through the bushes the goblins just hopped through. Another descends down from the trees and drops to the ground. A fourth can be seen to the south running down the road towards the party at an incredible rate (South, in this instance, is "up".). They are about 8' wide and long, but only about 5' tall.

The two spiders coming out of the bushes both bite the goblin that had dropped to the ground. Knowledge (Nature) and/or Heal checks.

I'm going to start adding in all appropriate checks, even the ones nobody in the party has ranks in. I'm going to do this to show you when certain skills would be useful. Always feel free to Private Message or Private Line me if you wish to roll a check on something, even if I haven't suggested it. The worst I can say is "wtf, no". Most of the time the checks I include are free actions to simply know something or not. In other cases they might be Standard actions to actively attempt to recall information. I'll always specify if the checks are more than free actions.

The two chocobos DAI has summoned become obviously terrified but remain in their location for now.
