@ teslas

The ASCII looks like the simplest form. Can you keep a sample grid on hand and just copy paste?

Busy morning but I'm done soon.  Normally I can check sooner than this too, I just had an important run-through with an audience. ^^

ASCII maps look fine to me (and easier to read than Dwarf Fortress).

If the DM wants, I can make the little mini-maps like I do for my game for combat.

Re: OOC: Everything Else

Whew, that was a lot of reading...

I say DM rolls group initiiative, and I'm fine with DM rolling my saves for sake of ease.

ASCII looks good but, I think if VIL is still offering to do his grids that would also be good.

Just throwing this out there, since FF had SOME randomness in stat ups but otherwise classes followed specific growths, my group has adopted a rule for HD, you take the average rounded up so...

each d4 counts as a 3
each d6 counts as a 4
each d8 counts as a 5
each d10 counts as a 6
each d12 counts as a 7

and add con mod, this was to keep everyone around same level of durability, and was kind of an extension of point buy over rolling stats for balance...plu,s since it rounds up it's TECHNICALLY more beneficial then rolling(unless you're particularly lucky, like that White Mage)

Re: OOC: Everything Else

I like the randomness of HP rolls. I think we'll stick with that. However, and I wasn't going to bother wordsing at you guys any MORE than I already did, but I have a special rule:

If you roll a 1, you can choose to reroll and take the next roll's result -1, If this is a 1, you can reroll again taking the next roll's result -2. This cannot be done again.

If you roll a 1 (for the first time when leveling up) twice in a row, you instead gain your maximum HP. (This happens much more for d4 mages). I had a player roll a 1 four times in a row. He got 1 + 4 + 4 + 4 HP because of it.

I have kept track of HP rolls for a very long time on a multitude of characters. In only 4% (number accurate as of 1.5 years ago) of characters I have made or DM'd for were their HP roll averages off by more than .5 hp/level from the character average after level 8.

If all four of you would rather have static HP growth, then we will do that. I'll give you 1/2 rounded down of your Hit Die every level. Every even level I'll let you roll a d2 and add that as well

This should give you roughly .25hp/level higher than average, while preserving a small bit of randomness.

Re: OOC: Everything Else

Wait...so if I roll a 1 is it good or bad? it seems you have two separate thigns happening for rolling 1's

Re: OOC: Everything Else

Rolling a 1 is bad. You can either choose to take the 1hp, or roll again and subtract 1 from the result (minimum 1 hp gained). If you roll another amount that equals 1, you can reroll and subtract 2 from the result (minimum 1 hp gained).

Then, say you roll a 1 for HP at level 2, regardless of whether you reroll it again for a chance at higher HP or not, and then rolling a 1 for HP at level 3 is a GOOD thing. You instead get maximum hit points. This is to reward your good luck with rolling 1's!

Say you have D6 HD.

Rolling a 2 is the worst thing that could happen.
Rolling a 1 is about as good as rolling a 3, on average.
Rolling a 4-5 is good stuff.
Rolling a 6 is lucky. Good job.

Re: OOC: Everything Else

Oooh...so the good part of rolling 1 is if you roll 1 for multiple levels in a row? I think I got it

Re: OOC: Everything Else

Well, that rarely happens, at best 25% of the time. It's the simple fact that if you roll a 1, you have a good chance to either reroll a higher value and have an extra chance for max HP next level.

If JACK rolled a 1, then wanted to reroll and got an 11 (D12 HD on Black Belts), he'd get 10 hit points. Awesome.

No problem. I try to make overly-complicated and messed up rules as often as possible, and then do my best to try and explain them poorly.

:D I haven't actually played the version of Fire Emblem that Sephiran is in but he's definitely the best match for what I was going for.  On a side note, it is HARD to find a good picture of a male white mage-priestish-thing.  Seriously.
