Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Emerald City, Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008  5:00 AM
----

Dreams. Dreams come in many forms. Helpful, confusing, terrifying, surreal, erotic, enlightening. They do not come every night, but tonight three woman of note experience particularly vivid ones.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

The hillside is covered in knee-deep green grass; dotted with chrysanthenums, lilies, orchids. It stretches into the distance, meeting a cloud-streaked sky; brillaint blue of midday. Jiro Koji walks, his geta'd feet rustling through the grass, blue-and-green kimono highlighting his strong form. At his hip rides Naru-Kami, the Koji clan honor-blade, in its black sheath; stormclouds picked out in silver gliding along its length.

The wind begins to blow, rustling the grass and tugging some few petals from the flowers. Before him suddenly looms a building; squat and low; he recognizes it - a hall-cum-bunker, in Singapore. People move within, and suddenly he is beset; shadowy figures looming over him, black glades glittering like obsidian fangs in their hands. Naru-kami flashes in his hands like lightning; flashing through the shadowed forms, which dissolve like clouds at the blade's touch.

Suddenly, he is within the building, and the shadow attackers he strikes down are old men; children; women; and the sword in his hand will not stop, even as he cries out; tries to stop himself. Forced away from innocent flesh, Naru-kami twists in his hand and lashes at floor and wall and ceiling. Flames flash up, devouring the dead, devouring the building, devouring those few he had saved from the sword. One man, younger than the others, with a face both blank and instantly recognizable, staggered towards him as the fire seared him; devouring flesh. "You killed us; self righteous, would-be samurai. You killed us with sword and with carelessness; what do you imagine will happen to those you leave in your wake? Killer. Despoiler. Honorless; killing like a frenzied dog." The last words hung in the air as the flames burned away even the man's bones, leaving them to fall in a cloud of ash. The flames swept up, devouring his kimono, tearing at Jiro's flesh like a thousand knives, digging, melting, shaping.

Then Jiro was on the plain again, but the endless green fields were brown, the flowers wilting. She was on her knees, clad in nothing but ash. From behind came the voice of her father. "You have brought dishonor to our house." To his left; the voice of his mother. "You have squandered your gifts and talents."  To his right, the voice of his uncle. "You have wasted your training."

Before him, Omiko Nakamura stood, clad in a kimono of purest, shimmering white. "You come to me seeking pity, but reject me when I offer it. Begone from my sight." She turned her back, and it hit Jiro like a physical blow.

Now Jiro knelt on asphalt, her body clad once more; but as gaijin. From behind came the voice of Alexandria. "You use me like a tool, to further your ends and slay your foes. And you would cast me aside the moment I become inconvenient to you." From her left, the voice of Chen Ming. "You claim to trust and respect me, yet you lie as a snake whenever it suits you."  From the right, the voice of Wei. "You offer worthless words and worthless actions; it shames me to hear the very offer from you, weakling. You can kill, but you cannot face those whose life you end. Dog and coward." Ahead; Alex stood. "You call me friend and claim you care; yet you drag me into danger. All for what? To have someone watch you and applaud? To use me to gather tidbits?" She began to change, features and figure running like heated wax. "You say that you will watch my back; that I can trust you; but you spout lies and whisper my secrets to other ears." Now, she was beyond any recognition. "And when I cease to be a perdictable, appreciative audience, you shatter my very soul in your hubris."

And then Jiro was again on the plain; the grass now dead, the flowers all withered and gray. The sky above was black; studded by points of light that glared down in baleful judgement. Alex stood before her, Naru-kami in her hand, little lightnings playing along the blade. "Now, Koji, explain yourself. Rationalize yourself. Justify yourself. You have never had problems in the past doing so."

Her voice was ashes and dust. "I never meant harm."

"Good intentions pave your road."

Naru-kami raised in Alex's hand, glittering in the starlight. Then it descended like the very wrath for which it was named. She felt it cleave into her body; bisecting her torso from shoulder to crotch-

With a scream to wake the dead, Jiro Koji awoke, lurching, crashed to the floor. Tears streaming, she curled into a fetal ball.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

He ran playing tag along side other kids, laughing. He jumped on a tricycle and started peddling madly, and Mom was behind her pushing her along and then she let go and she was really riding a bike all by herself! Just like a big girl!

The big girl got tired of riding and sat down at her desk. She opened up his new book and started typing the words in. His face was lit by the blue glow of the Commodore 64's screen. He yelled in triumph as the first few notes of the imperial march started.

Sally-Joe. Love of his life in grade ten, and she never even knew his name. It made him so sad that Gabe never even noticed she was crushing on him. Why wouldn't he notice? He was a football player and she was on the Rugby team! It was like being a cheerleader, only better? Why was he spending so much time with that ugly girl? He was sooo hot it hurt.

Negative exponents made no sense, why couldn't she be out in the field at practice. Who needed math anyway, she was going to be a programmer. He smiled thinking about how cool it would be to work for ID on Doom 3. That would be so much better then making an perfect pass and YES! GOAL! State Champions for 2003!

Which suddenly didn't matter anymore because her friend was dead that that ugly girl killed her but to protect others because she was trying to kill people and monsters were real and they looked like friends and now she had to fight to keep the world from ending and that sucked and hurt and was scary and...

He sat up, and he was looking back at himself in bed and he was falling in the darkness and nothing was the same and she was trapped and couldn't move, couldn't scream and she had to scream because...

HE REMEMBERED!

Alex woke screaming, her voice mingling with Jiro's.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

For a long, timeless moment, Jiro lay on the floor, curled tightly and defensively, wirey frame wracked with sobs. Eventually, she calmed enough to regain some awareness. I have not been chopped in half. I am in Emerald City with Alex - Alex!

She could hear her friend's ragged breath. Somewhat awkwardly, Jiro uncurled herself and rose shakily to her feet. A glance showed that it was still fully dark outside; the clock proudly proclaiming it was barely half past five. Cautiously, worriedly; the words of the specters of her dream echoing in her head, she placed a hand lightly on Alex's shoulder. "Alex-san," she began in a hoarse voice, "Can you hear me?"

Alex bolted upright from her position on the couch. She looks around in confusion, then focuses on Jiro. A moment passes. She lunges forward and wraps her arms around Jiro in a crushing embrace.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

It takes a very long while for Alex to say anything more, as she trembles in the embrace. She holds on like a drowning man to a life preserver.

Finally she speaks "I... I'm still Alex. It... it's not your fault."

"What you said last night. Before I... collapsed. It woke me up, made me realize there was something in my head... like a dam. It was leaking, letting in memories. I was standing in front of a big leak, and it was washing over me... so I tried to stop it or see what was on the other side or something and... it broke. So much came rushing out... I got lost in it. It washed me away."

Alex shudders, and pulls Jiro tight again. "I can feel it... it's still there, the dam. Still blocking... something. Only now I'm standing in most of it... trying to keep my head above the water, trying to walk on the ground and not sink into the mud."

"I can't tell what was there is to dry land or even if there is such a thing any more..." Her voice breaks, sounding like a lost child.

Jiro nods. "I will do what I can, to help keep you above that water; to help you find your way to land"

So. My thought last night about letting a wound drain seems... both less and more accurate than I thought. Merciful kamis, what it must be to have another's memories shoving in around you. Help me consider my words; help me help my friend.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Feeling Alex slip into sleep once more, Jiro lifted her gently and placed her on the bed. Taking a moment to flip over the hotel comforter, so that the non-sweaty side was on the bottom, she tucked her friend in and stepped back. "Sleep well," she whispered quietly.

Jiro tried to follow Alex's example, curling up on the couch, but sleep eluded her. The images and words of her dream haunted her, and she could not slip away. Briefly, she considered a walk; her usual means of clearing her head, but thought better of it. Not with vampires about, and not now. When Alex awakes, she will likely need a friend.

Crossing her legs, Jiro slipped instead into meditation, calming her roiling thoughts and emotions with breathing exercises and the lessons her family had given.

A small surge of adrenaline hits her. She goes through a small mental checklist, and realizes she's still wearing the clothes she'd been wearing all day. Also, Jiro was sitting on the floor.

Okay. I'm good... fracked royally in the head, but good.

She threw back the covers and sat up with a yawn.

Jiro sat in an inner silence; her mind deliberately slowed into a rhythm of meditation. Her eyes are closed, her breathing even.

Mentally, she was almost back to an even keel. She'd had that nightmare before; the details changed, but the theme of personal failure and condemnation, was painfully familiar. Meditating was the least satisfying way of getting herself back on-keel after a round with that dream, but it was the least dangerous and most productive.

Lost within, she does not hear Alex wake.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

The sound of her friend's voice broke through the mental fugue Jiro had been in. Blinking, she glanced first to the bed, and then quickly around the room, finally settling on Alex by the fridge. "Ohayou Gozaimasu, Alex-san. I hope you are feeling a bit better."

The martial artist stood, stretched, and joined Alex by the fridge, snagging a slice of pizza herself. One of the joyous foods just as good cold as hot. Pizza was a good idea, even if this one lead to... difficulties.

"I admit, I am not sure what our plan should be for the day. Before... last night, I had thought to repeat the activities of yesterday; practice in the morning and some scouting in the afternoon." A pause. "I asked Chen to meet us next tomorrow so that we could, well, try to adress your... memory problems... today, if that needed more time than expected. We still have a time window because of it, and I am inclined to make use of it."

Jiro finished her slice of pizza, using the moment to formulate her next words. "But considering what that vampire said last night... if they, like you, are from another world, this perhaps puts a new wrinkle in the situation. It may be best to appraise Dragoneye, through Chen, of that immediately. I also admit I would like very much to go over that seal with a true mage; one who knows better than a dabbler like myself."

Another breath. "I will defer to your judgement, however. How do you think we should address this day?"

"Practice for at least a couple hours would be good, I think. Some good hard physical activity to clear the head is something that works. Hoping on the treadmill beside my desk at home to work through a knotty programming problem or beating the hell out of my friends in sparring practice when the vampires weren't biting always worked." Alex said.

Jiro blinked twice, slowly. "You... both of you..." Another slow blink and long moment of silence. "Huh."

Jiro shook herself. "Well. Give me a few minutes to clean up, and I'll be ready to go." A pause as she considered how to parse this next question. "Ah, how would you like me to be for this? I know you, ah, associated this form with another friend last night. Would you be more comfortable dealing with, well, Jiro-chan or Jiro-kun today?" She... He... Alex seems mostly stable now, and yet with both sets of memories around. I wonder if this is a stable equilibrium, or a state of transition, or something else altogether... I do not want to make things worse for Alex. I do not enjoy spending too long in this form, but I can endure it for the sake of my friend. Friends. Pah, and I thought I created pronoun trouble.

"Then I shall. But if the situation changes... let me know." a pause.  I will be as quick as I can." Taking a moment to grab some clean clothes - mental note, laundry soon - Jiro walked into the bathroom and fired up the shower. She peeled out of her clothes - stinking from a day's causal wear and sweat, and the much more intense night-sweats brought on by the dream - and jumped into a shower almost hot enough to scald. Oh, kamis, he thought as the water, and the change, washed over him, that feels good.

True to his word, Jiro hurried, taking the time to get clean without wasting too much. They only had, after all, so much daylight to work with. He quickly dried off and pulled on his outfit for the day. Emerging from the bathroom, he grabbed another slice of pizza and said, "I am ready to go when you are. Same park as yesterday to practice?"

While she occasionally shows some confusion with a conflicting memory, There is a unity that was lacking before.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

"From the standpoint of pure technique, it is going very well. I feel I am learning as much from you as you are from me." I always do seem to get some benefit from teaching the Art. I might have to think about doing so more often.

Of course, I am no longer really able to tell... well, which of you I am speaking to at a given moment. Nor am I sure it, well, matters. Alex seems... stable. That is a very good thing, really. What is the phrase... alloys are stronger. Fundamentally, I still trust Alex at my back in a fight. Perhaps, now, more than I did. He... she... bah... knows me, now, fairly well, and trusts me. And I think I know my friend the programmer/vampire huntress as well as I could, all things considered. At least the hunter seems more stable than, say, Birdy Cephon.

"I think we should move on to some sparring, or perhaps take a look around some of the vampire territory. We got a bit of a look at the group near the hotel; perhaps we could find some clues about the ones we suspect are behind the Ruthless Asian Gang." He shook his head. "I almost wonder what the best way to check that out would be. As best I know, none of them have seen me in this form. I could head down there alone with typical young-male idot swagger and try to infiltrate." He gave a crooked smile. "Or I could swap and the two of us head down together and go trolling for idiots; give some poor gangbanger the worst day of his life. Without a known local figure such as Chen Ming with us, one of them might be foolish enough to... volunteer for us to interrogate him." It could certainly be amusing to stomp on some idiots. Cathartic, too. And hey, we might actually be able to get some information out of them in the process.

A moment of consideration. "Also, given what we learned from the vampires last night... I think it might also be a good idea to bring in a real mage to look at that seal. Chen should be able to put us in touch with one, or perhaps even Dragoneye himself could look. As much as it... touches on your situation, Alex-san, it may also be how those vampires got here from wherever they thought you could not follow." A pause as he turned the thought over in his mind. "Actually, it might be a good idea to take a look around the area to see if there are any other, similar seals... Gomen, I am rambling again."

Jiro took a breath. How should I treat this? Pah, there is no straightforward way. "You are the expert in hunting these things, Alex-san. Which do you think would be our best course to take?"

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Alex considers the matter. "Splitting up is a no go. You're good, I'm good. Neither of us are Centurion or Superman, so we might run into something we can't handle alone. When hunting, we always used the buddy system at minimum. To many painful lessons for us to do otherwise." Alex grimaced at some unpleasant memories.

"Baiting Gangbangers sounds like it would be hella lot of fun, but I don't think they'll know too much. Boss Vampires don't trust anyone, humans least of all. They think of us as cattle. Sometimes dangerous cattle, but cattle none the less. Still, we might be able to learn something."

She chewed on lip a bit. "As for bringing in a wizard... I'm not so sure. I don't like the feel I got off Dragoneye. He's manipulating us and I don't know what towards. I don't want to have to trust him any more then we have to. Chen Ming, I trust. Dragoneye I don't. Back home I knew a wizard, a psychic, and a witch who'd I'd trust with all this. Sadly, I'm pretty sure they are on another world."

"The more I dive into my memories, the more sure I am that I learned programming on one world, hunting vampires on a second, and this is a third. They are just so... different. I have no memories of any of the real caped crusaders that are all over the internet here. Since it's pretty clear that the Vampires are from the same place I was hunting them, it means that there are some who are going to recognize me on sight. I've been hunting them since my Junior year, and became the Slayer not long after. Not many have gotten away, but I don't get all of them. From what Talon said before I staked him, there has to be at least one other Vamp who knew my face."

Alex sighs heavily "The problem is, I don't know who it might be. Talon was a serial minion. He never had the brains to be a real Master Vampire, always moving from master to master. Normally after I staked the last one. With my Slayer side memories still so jumbled up I can't even make a worthwhile guess."

"Which is all very interesting I'm sure, but doesn't give us our next move so... if there has been a split, then the original master is probably in control of the larger group. That means whoever is running the Ruthless bunch is junior, might even be a local. Newly turned vamps normally couldn't hope to pull that off, but if a person had a strong enough will before they died it could happen. Let's look there first. Less chance I'll be recognized and scare them off, and they'll probably be weaker."

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

"I am sorry if I reminded you of unpleasantness. As for Dragoneye; I, too, do not trust him. Most of the trustworthy mages I know are half a word away. Your... Slayer side memories... do they include much in the way of practical magical knowledge? We could, I think, pool our resources on that seal."

Jiro began to pace. "Feh. You say you have removed many of that Talon's masters... He cannot have had a habit of... what is the phrase... backing the winning horse. That suggests to me that whoever is strongest in this power struggle is likely in the group nearest Chinatown. But any mage capable of creating that seal should be able to recognize the presence of one such as Dragoneye. If nothing else, the Ruthless Asian Gang cannot be ignorant of his existence, given their proximity to Chinatown."

A sigh. "But you are the expert in the nature of Vampires. And I suppose a 'junior partner' might use the threat of Dragoneye at his back to ward his master." Jiro grimaced. "I mislike leaving the threat at our back unopposed, but the more I think on it, the more I see where your logic lies. Let us pay the Ruthless Asian Gang a visit."

Hopefully, this is not a massive mistake. Given my track record these last few days, letting Alex decide our course is likely safest, even given his/her... interesting mental state.

"Talon... he wasn't push over and his bosses normally weren't either. I'm surprised that I took him down so easily. He must have been really off his game. Alex and Jiro have a relaxing hour wandering around the area, heading into small shops and generally looking like tourists. They don't have much success getting mugged, until Alex has the bright idea of taking a 'short cut' down a dark alley past an obvious drug den.

A couple thugs take exception to this and pull switchblades. About 3 seconds later, they are unconscious on the ground in front of the pair. There is a small nook that can be used to hold a conversation out of sight.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Taking a moment to secure both of their 'guests' with a roll of duct tape he'd picked up for the purpose, Jiro tried to get himself into a good 'interrogating' headspace. He knew he could be a frightening fellow, but it did not come naturally to him. He preferred to get along with people.

These men, however, were the sort of idiot thugs who got their joy from inflicting violence and suffering on others. The sort of idiot thugs he did not care for. And at the moment, the sort of idiot thugs who may well have information he needed.

He took a bit of care, in the little nook in the alley's side, to position the two thugs so that the one could not see the other, sitting them on either side of a trash can. In low tones he said to Alex, "I believe a bit of 'good cop, bad cop,' is in order. If you will allow me, I will take the part of the bad cop."

Waiting a moment for her response, he shifted his ki and lay hands on the first of the two thugs. "Merciful Spirit's Grasp." As the thug regained consciousness, he gave the toothiest smile he could. "Hi there, foolish one. You picked the worst possible people in the world to jump, I think. What am I going to do with you?" Squatting down, he looked the youth in the eye. "I don't even particulary want anything from you. Just a little information. Tell me what I want to know, and that's the end of it."

"I want to know where your boss is, little man. I know he's told you he'll do horrible things if you betray him; but consider: he is not here." Shifting his ki again, Jiro shrouded his hand in rippling blue fire. "I am."

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

While they shop, Alex buys a number of articles of clothing. She doesn't take much time picking anything out or even trying things on, just grabbing things that Jiro assumes are random. All of it is on sale or otherwise low priced yet decent quality.
Jiro Koji:
He took a bit of care, in the little nook in the alley's side, to position the two thugs so that the one could not see the other, sitting them on either side of a trash can. In low tones he said to Alex, "I believe a bit of 'good cop, bad cop,' is in order. If you will allow me, I will take the part of the bad cop."

"Ah, my favorite game. Oldest one in the book to. Wake 'em up!"

Alex reflected on how incredibly useful it was to have a healer at times like this. She had vivid memories of waiting for someone to wake up after a brawl. She also remembered that scene in B5 where Marcus took out the whole bar. Much more fun to watch on DVD then wait through... though the beat down before hand was worth it.

As the target woke up, she knelt and put her game face on. A soft smile, a faint bit of sadness in her eyes, and a sympathetic tone. "He's right, you know. You're in a bad spot. Made a few bad choices, and now your in over your head."

Alex reaches out and gently pats the man's hand. "All the rumours going around, you friends disappearing or acting strange. The turf fight brewing that seems bigger then any before it. It's a scary time right now and it's okay to be afraid. It's a lot to take in. I know. I've been there myself. Just wanting everything to go back to normal, the way it was before."

"We can do that, but we need to know where to look. We aren't here to destroy your life or send you to jail. We're here to keep people alive, even with the strange stuff that has been going down. So talk to us. Please. It's for the good of everyone in the city." The girl leans forward and gives the guy a brilliant smile.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Looking between the devil and the angel before him, the man breaks. "You... you can beat them? The Pishacha? Alright. I'll tell you. Johhny took over from Yu a few weeks back. He beat the crap out of him in the fight. We all thought he must have gotten powers somehow. I mean, you hear about it happening on the news and stuff but it doesn't happen around here normally. After he took over, he said that he had a way of giving powers to his most loyal followers. His elite guard he called them."

The man shuddered, then looked at Alex's comforting smile. He took a deep breath and continued. "How he did it was a secret, but everyone he gave powers to got... really really violent. I mean, I'm no nun but these guys... I saw one punch a guy through a wall for touching his jacket. They kept the best groupies for themselves, but the girls always looked so pale and in a daze. Drugs we thought but it wasn't it. I saw one once with his teeth in a girls throat and he was drinking up the blood. I ran before he saw me. Then there's how they never go outside during the day... Well, it doesn't take a genius to figure things out."

"Now there's talk about how a war's coming, and we all need to be ready. I hear he's going to be bringing a bunch more guys into his guard tonight, at his pad."

The man gives you two addresses where the Pishacha, as he calls them, make their lair. It sounds like at least a dozen people have been inducted into the elite guard.

Jiro gives the man an indifferent look as he leaves the alley, then he quickly tears the duct tape restraining 'Lee.' In low tones he says, "That went well, I think. It seemed to me he was speaking the truth as he knew it. And from what he has described, there are definately several vampires about, though many are likely very new to the, ah, life."

A glance around. "Alex-san, given what he said, my instinct is to strike quickly, before this Johhny can add more to his numbers. In fact, I would think striking around noon would be our best bet. Most vampires I have heard of are hard to wake while the sun is in the sky."

"That said, you know more about these vampires than I. Is there anything about these Pishacha that might... change the situation?"

The warehouse has a personal sized door at the back, beside the rear loading bays. It is inset from the back of the building, and the fence around the back lot is solid enough that one could probably get in without being seen.

The problem is getting into the lot. There is a chained with a heavy padlock around the back gate.

That said, there are enough buildings in the area that one could probably roof hop over without a problem. Or just leap the fence.

The hatch opens easily and quietly, the hinges looking quite new. It seems that it leads to some maintenance tunnels, however they have been remodeled quite heavily. It looks like Alex just dropped into the front hall of a house, albeit a messy one, complete with coats on racks and shoes. There is a door to the east and west. The east door looks unused, with assorted junk piled in front of it. There is a mat in front of the west door.

Sadly for Alex's plan, she hits the Vampire too hard. She grabs it by the head and tries to throw it from that grip. Instead of picking it up, she rips the head clean off, reducing the monster to dust.

"Bob, get your ass in gear and get Johhny. We've got mother fucking capes down here!" One of the vampires yells as he takes a swing at Alex.

The other still standing vampire just snarls, and lands a second hit against Jiro.

At the yell, the one man who had been staying back from the battle turns and runs for the far door. He yanks it open, dashes through, and slams it shut behind him.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Alex turned to face the Vampires attacking Jiro while absently stabbing behind her, triggering another explosion of dust.

The vampires that had been knocked to the ground pull themselves up. One of them staggers towards doors, while the other attacks Jiro. It misses, but distracts him enough that the other vampire is able to land a third hit on him. "WHY WON'T YOU DIE!" It growls.

The non-combatants have been edging around the fight, trying to make it to the door to the warehouse.

Jiro finally lands a hit, and it proves to be one worth waiting for. He sends the the vampire flying through the door that Alex didn't break down, and then through a brick wall. From the smell that wafts in, he's been knocked into the sewer.

The girl vampires take one look at this, and decide that perhaps this wasn't a battle they could win. The ran at inhuman speeds towards the broken wall and dove through.

Jiro then hears Alex yell "FRACK THIS" in the distance. She sounds very angry.

Over at her fight, she demonstrates this fact quite clearly. A stake through the heart does not normally mean "I love you" after all, and one of the lesser vampires turns to dust.

The leader looks at this and swears. "Oh shit! She must be the one they told me about. RUN! SHE'S THE FUCKING SLAYER!"

The vampires proceed to do just that.

Where Alex's blows had opened holes, Jiro's Ki enhanced power destroyed the floor. The pair lands in the middle of some very confused people, some obviously vampires, others undetermined. It seems they had been looking at the ceiling, and wondering about the noise.

Two of those present are very clearly vampires, or at least have severe allergies to sunlight. There were more or less in the middle of the pillar of light that the destruction opened up, and are now screaming in pain as their flesh combusts.

It looks like there are five with fangs and four without standing outside of direct sunlight.

Alex darts forward and places a stake right in the vampire's heart. It explodes into a now familiar cloud of dust.

Jiro's power can't match the pure, direct efficiency of Alex's stakes. However, a superpowered uppercut does the job nicely, sending it flying up into a broken beam. Another vampire lost, dust in the sun.

The three remaining vampires look at the people standing in full sunlight, and then at their burning comrades. They do the only sensible thing. Pull out hand guns and fire.

Alright, maybe not so sensible.

Alex dodges one bullet, but the second strikes her, while Jiro is missed cleanly.

Meanwhile, the four people make a break for the next room. It looks like they are heading towards the stairs up.

Just before the pair is about to give up, Jiro catches the sound of something coming from on of the rooms. He and Alex arrive there just in time to see a section of the wall moving, and a very surprised looking Vampire staring at Alex. It's the one that got away from her back at the warehouse.

Jiro noted Alex's reaction, and tried to keep a burst of fear from crossing his features. Kamis no, don't let me make this worse on them. This is just plain not going well. Hefting the vampire up, the martial artist heads for the the basement, expression clouded, then going studiously blank as he puts their victim down, close enough to the wafting sunlight to be noticed, but far enough to be relatively safe.

We need to deal with this. We need to deal with these monsters, and fast, and get somewhere without vampires, somewhere Alex and Alexandria can sort themselves out. Without destroying either one. Merciful Kamis...

I want to help you, and I fear that my zeal to help has harmed you, because I am... prone to being too abrupt." A pause for breath. He took a deep breath. This offer hurts to make, but some things are more important than your honor, Koji. "If you want to, if you think it best, I would be okay with just leaving this place behind, and letting Dragoneye and the vampires enjoy each other's company without our interference."

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

The vampire wets himself, collapses to the ground, and starts babbling. It's hard to make sense of things at first, but a few slaps from Alex manage to get him on track.

As best you can tell, this is the story so far - It seems that this is Johnny. He was one of the first natives to this world turned into a vampire, a few months back. He was never trusted by the leader of the newcomers, but he was valued as a source of information on this strange new world. The lack of respect, combined with his ego lead to him breaking off from the main group. He moved here and took over a former rival group of his.

This started a gang war, one that he has been losing. The experienced vampires of the other group are just to powerful for his lot to stand against. He was planning on a mass recruitment tonight.

From what you can gather, you've dusted pretty much all of the vamps loyal to him. There are only a couple still around.

Whenever he talks about the older vampires, he starts to get vague. It doesn't seem intentional, he just spaces out a bit and doesn't seem to be able to give more then the most general of information.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

"Interesting. Very interesting. Mind-rape seems to be a habit for these... creatures." There is venom pulling through Jiro's tones by the end of the sentence. He pauses, collecting himself, before continuing. "Alex-san, I believe he has spoken all he can. I am no mystic, to break such a gaes... but I wonder..." The martial artist's eyes unfocused as he pondered the situation for a long moment, muttering in Japanese as he thought madly, then he dug in his pockets for a moment, coming up with a piece of chalk as he dropped into a crouch, turning towards the pool of sunlight streaming down.

For some minutes, he scribbled on the basement floor, a mix of Japanese Kanji, Mandarin, Spanish, and the occasional scrap of English, arrayed in a web of ideas and concepts that follows only a vague logic. From their earlier conversations and ramblings, Alex can recognize the kanji Jiro uses for Ki appearing several times.

After about three minutes of drawing, Jiro sat back on his haunches and considered the array of ideas before him. After another thirty seconds, he found his voice. "There may be a way. I know a small amount about wounds of the mind; not enough to be confident of healing you, Alex-san, or even if that is what you need; but enough that I might, might, be able to break the spell shackling your mind, Johnny-jukeisha. Then those who violated your mind could be unveiled, as well as their places of hiding." He grins, and there is a manic edge to it, the wild light of inspiration in his eyes. "What do you say, Johnny? Want to let me help you help us fuck over the ones who have disrespected you, crushed your gang and raped your mind?"

Jiro sat on his haunches, eyes closed, hands shrouded in silver-blue ki as they reached for the vampire. His left hand, two fingers together and the others curled into his palm, touched Johnny's forehead lightly. His right hand, open, fingers together as if to cup something, touched beneath his chin.

His eyes opened, for a brief moment seeming aglow with the same ki that shrouded his hands. "Mind before me, throw off the chains upon you. Throw off the traumas and gaes. Be free."

The aura around his hands grew brighter, flaring in intensity and flowing into Johnny.

Jiro grits his teeth as he powers more and more of himself into the fight, but the darkness in an ancient evil and will not bow before a tyro of the arts of mental healing. It takes from it's host with reckless abandon, and Johnny's screams echo through the building.

There is a final surge of darkness that fills the room utterly. When it passes, Jiro is flat on his back feeling like he just went ten rounds with Centurion and Johnny is curled up in a ball on the floor.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

For a long moment, Jiro just lay there, head at the edge of the pool of sunlight, breathing heavily. His hands burned, feeling as if he'd stuck them into a jet of steam. The lingering feel of the mighty darkness he'd warred with left him feeling vile, tainted. His hands especially felt filthy. Brilliant idea, Koji. Let's pit a half-brained understanding of mental magic and our very life force against the sorceries of an immortal monster from another world. Fine plan. Just brilliant. You're lucky you didn't explode his head. Or your own head. Or something.

"That... did not go as I planned." Jiro tried to sit up, failed, slumped back down, feeling drained. "Now you see why I do not think I am able to help your own... issue... directly, Alex?" Another pause. "And hell, I don't think that sort of thing would help you, even if it did work."

The second try, he managed to sit up. "You still with us, Johnny?" Or did I just really screw up? Kamis, given the kind of energies I felt wrapped around him, they might have even put something in their gaes to fry him if someone tried to undo the spell anyway...

Alex looked sick to her stomach. "What... what was that? The darkness, I could feel it." Alex shudders, and rubs her arms like she's trying to scrape something off.

"I can still feel it. That wasn't normal vampire stuff." She says definitively.

She pauses and takes a deep breath. "If I ever host to something like that... don't hold back. Don't worry about breaking my mind or even killing me. I do not want to live with evil like that in me." Her voice was soft, little above a whisper.

And if it feels so familiar, why don't I remember where from?

"I think we would be well served by retreating. With all the commotion, and the gunfire, and the screams, the police will likely be here shortly." A pause as he took another breath, tried to steady himself. Pointless though the gesture was, he wiped his palms on his pantsleg, trying to shake off the feeling of filth.

Another breath and, while still drained and tired, he felt himself steadied. He crouched again next to the curled-up vampire. "Please tell me I didn't kill him by accident.... That'd be far too sloppy, and we still need what he knows..." Pop quiz! How do you check an undead's vitals...

The Vampire jerks away at the touch, and looks up at the humans. When it opens it's eyes, they are treated to a disturbing sight. There is nothing within the sockets, instead what looked like an endless pool of darkness. The same can be seen when it opens it's mouth.

The sunlight has the expected effect on the Vampires body, and it bursts into flame quite nicely. It begins to collapse into ash, but as it falls away it leaves behind a human shaped darkness that seems to absorb the light.

Before anyone can react, the darkness explodes outwards. It coats the walls and floor for a moment then sinks out of sight.

Jiro and Alex are left feeling unclean. Like some of that evil is still clinging to them.

The sound of sirens can be heard in the distance.

Why do I have the feeling that that thing's going to make our lives miserable in the future?  Oh right, I've been paying attention. "There's something you don't see every day..." Jiro muttered tiredly as he pulled himself to his feet, feeling soiled and drained. And that would be the sound of Emerald City's finest coming...

"I think that is our cue to leave... if we are quick, we should be able to get clear before the Law arrives." A pause, as he glances into the sewers. "This does not feel like a good time to stumble through the dark to me. I vote we head for the hotel, and figure out our next step from there."

Walking into the room, Jiro felt weariness overtake him. Pausing to dig a bottle of water out of the fridge, he slumped into a chair. "First shower's yours, Alex-san. I'm just gonna sit for a few."

Merciful kamis I'm feeling drained right now. Cornering vampires in their dens... mind magic... some kind of nasty spirit infesting Johnny... At least we rather thoroughly broke the back of Johnny's bunch, and his gang.

Drinking deeply, he sagged back in the chair and sighed. We're gonna need to talk to a wizard bout that spirit... or maybe Alex can work his magic on the internet and find something... I should know something, but I'm too tired... my mind's turned to clay...  He settled in to rest, and hoped Alex wouldn't be too long in the shower... but he wouldn't begrudge them taking their time; not after what it seemed like had happened to them today.

At Alex's words, Jiro jerks awake, having nodded off. More tired than I thought I was... "Thank you, Alex-san. Ah, could you call for some delivery pizza or something while I clean up? I meant to, but..." He shrugged, gave an apologetic smile.

He stripped out of his clothes, smelling of sewer, sweat, and adrenaline, and fired up the shower, letting the hot water wash over him as he scrubbed, hoping and praying that he'd manage to feel at least a tiny bit cleaner after. Memories of the foul thing he'd wrestled with as he'd tried to purge Johnny's mind haunted him, distracting him and grating on already-frayed nerves.

Tired mind racing as he scrubbed, he lost track of time. A jolt of cold water announced the hot water tank growing tired of her antics, and coincidentally woke her right up. Swearing under her breath, Jiro finished, then started to dry off. Her clothes from earlier held no appeal. There's no way I'm putting those back on. I feel filthy enough without adding that to the mix.

Wrapping a towel around herself, she poked her head out the door. "Can you toss me my backpack, Alex-san? The stuff I was wearing stinks too much of sewer for right now. You're right... scrubbing didn't help nearly enough."

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Jiro caught the backpack easily off the toss. She can use a sandal as a thrown weapon. Of course she's got perfect aim with a pack. "Thanks!"

She ducked back into the washroom and quickly pulled on something clean. And resolved to do laundry at some point tonight, because she was down to her last two changes of clean underwear. If I recall correctly, there's a coin-op washer and dryer by the office... should be safe enough. Gathering up the various bits of dirty clothes, she repacked the bag for the evening and headed back out.

"Sorry about that. I lost track of time. Anyway, once I'm feeling a little more awake I'll see if I can figure out what that... black spirit thing was." A pause as she sagged into a chair again. The jolt of cold water was fading fast. "I have some notes kicking around, I might get lucky. And who knows, you might find something online. Ah; I can't really think of a better plan than that right now... Too much stuff to process before I'll be comfortable in making a plan, Alex-san. Any ideas yourself?" If they suggest going out after those things today I'll say no, but other than that, I think I'll defer to the huntress. And rested, I think I'll be up for a little more poking around; see if we can't find the boss vamps... if we want to.

That spirit, and the magics laid into Johnny... That was terrifying. I really, really don't want to try and fight those guys in their lair right now... but I somehow doubt Alexandria will be satisfied with just giving the information to Dragoneye. She felt one corner of her mouth twist up into a smirk. Be jonest, Koji, you wouldn't be happy with doing that either.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Oh. Sure. Ask me a hard one... For a moment, Jiro sat quietly, munching pizza. Well, it's a fair enough question. I can think of no reason not to answer...

She shrugged. "There is not, perhaps, much to tell. I was raised in the family tradition, with the expectation that someday I would take over the family school of martial arts and teach the next generation. For fun... well, I enjoy nature; exploring and communing with the wilderness. Cities... have their good points, but for the most part I like fresh air and open space and green. That, I think, is the best part of my... exile... this last year and change. Too much of Japan is built up." Not exactly answering the question, Koji... Alex-san wants to know what you do for fun. Her little mental voice seemed to leer. Can I suggest a few things to say to them?

No! Merciful Kamis, where do you come from? I refuse to believe this much... undignified behavior... can truly come from me. "Ah, I do enjoy reading. Mostly fantasy or science fiction," she felt the corner of her mouth twitch upwards into a self-depreciating smirk. "Things as unlike my real life as I can find." A pause. "As for a favorite television show... A hard question to answer. I honestly could not pick one offhand. Well... probably one of the Macross series." Another smirk. "I'll admit, I used to sort of like Ranma 1/2 before, well..." she gave a vague gesture, as if to highlight her body. "Not quite as funny, any more. Most martial arts shows just annoy me... even with, as you say, real super powers, it doesn't work that way. Brings out the pedant in me."

Jiro had relaxed with her friend(s?). She was already tired, and had a tendency to ramble at the best of times. Ramble she did. "I used to dabble in origami, once upon a time, but I am terribly out of practice. I wanted to play baseball when I was younger, but with my abilities it was... unfair to the other players, and not terribly fun. Some challenge is needed for a contest." Another smirk as a memory replayed. "I still remember my school's coach's reaction when I quit the team. Visions of championships evaporating in his head." A giggle.

As the giggle faded, Jiro's expression and tone turning maudlin. "I lost a lot of friends that day. We were just elementary kids, school league... and most everyone else on the team had been my friend. After that day, none of them would speak to me." A sigh. "Had trouble making friends. Thought those guys were good friends... couldn't make more after that; not for years. Not 'till I met Omiko..." She felt her eyes well up. "Omi didn't care that I was awkward and weird and stand-offy. She just liked me. We'd hang out, and help each other with homework, or just talk about stuff... Then this happened, an' she didn't care, an' her father tried to have me killed... Hated to leave, hated to run away from another fight... one of her friends would pass my letters on, until Takashi found out..."

Abruptly, Jiro stiffened, shook her head as if to clear it as her cheeks heated in embarrassment. "Gomen - I am rambling. Too tired. I hope I have not given offense, Alex-san."

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Alex leaned back and listened, a small smile on her face. It was nice to talk about something normal.

Jiro Koji:
"I'll admit, I used to sort of like Ranma 1/2 before, well..." she gave a vague gesture, as if to highlight her body. "Not quite as funny, any more. Most martial arts shows just annoy me... even with, as you say, real super powers, it doesn't work that way. Brings out the pedant in me."

She giggled. "Wonder why?"

Jiro Koji:
Abruptly, Jiro stiffened, shook her head as if to clear it as her cheeks heated in embarrassment. "Gomen - I am rambling. Too tired. I hope I have not given offense, Alex-san."

Alex waves her hand in negation. "In my programming life I never was one for any sports but Slayer side I was on the Rugby teams in high school. It wasn't easy when I decided to quit either. I was already pretty alienated from my old friends on the team by then, with all the time I spent secretly hunting vampires but it still hurt. I had dreams of sports, ever since I was a little girl. To get a scholarship and be a full time Rugby hero. I kept playing for a while after I got my powers but it just wasn't fun or fair and I didn't have time for it, school, vampire hunting, and sleep. Something had to give and I just didn't feel honest."

"At least I had a few friends. There was a small group of us who worked together to protect the people of the town. We called ourselves 'The Band' and our meetings 'Band Practice'. Gabe, Glenn, Josh, Sarah, and Laura were the first ones in the group. There was another girl to, Emily, but she died before I met them. I joined up with them a while later. They'd been fighting vampires and demons for months before I got involved. They'd all run into monsters at some point and decided to do something about them. If it wasn't for that common bond, there was no way we'd ever have been close. Well... I had a crush on Gabe the football star, but the others were the less popular kinds of kids. Not the sort of people a popular Jock would hang out with."

"We drifted apart after high school, but we always had each other to call on. That's what was going on when I lost it a bit at Starbase yesterday. I was thinking about friends who could help and didn't realize they weren't here. Wish they were. After almost ten years of fighting evil we were pretty damn good at it."

Alex sighed. "Oh well. They aren't even in this universe so we'll just have to do the best we can."

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

"It's exactly what I was wanting to avoid, but talking about TV I like is going to be just as bad now that I think about it. Trying to figure out how to talk about how much I loved Dawson's Creek and how much I disliked the one episode I saw... just..." Alex shudders a bit, then shrugs.

"So, yeah. We can talk about my friends. I'll start with Sarah. I met her first, back when I was still in high school. She was a geek, a real geek right out of the stereotypes. D&D, Anime, and all of that. She had a lot in common with my programmer side actually. She wasn't from Aberdeen, but moved from Canada when her mom got a job in town. Her parents figured the move would do the girl good, get her away from some bad memories. Really bad."

"From what I picked up talking to a couple of her friends from back home and her mom, Sarah had been a real geek, awkward around everybody. Shy and quiet. Your typical high school outcast, with just a few friends. That was until she met a nice boy named Tom when she was fifteen. Not the Tommy I was talking about, he was no geek and uhh... not dead. Anyway from what I managed to piece together he was geek to, just better socialized. Best I can tell they dated for almost a year. She really came out of her shell learning about makeup, dresses and all the girlie stuff that she'd ignored. I saw a picture of them once, and they were so cute together."

"That changed after they got attacked by a monster. She was cut up bad, and he died when he tackled the thing off the edge of a cliff to save her. Obviously that undid all the good that had come from her dating him. Took her a while to start talking to people again. The scars the monster's claws left on her didn't help either. She wasn't the prettiest girl to begin with, but afterwards? People avoided her from first glance. I know I didn't want to have anything to do with an ugly wierdo like that." Alex puts scorn into her voice as she says the last, but it's clear she doesn't mean it. At least not anymore.

"When I met her, she was... not quite normal. Quiet enough for the most part and still obviously a geek but there was this edge to her. She had absolutely no back down in her. Even before I found out about vampires I'd watched her stand up to three older bullies and go down fighting. No matter what, she fought until she or her opponent wasn't getting back up again. Said she subscribed to the 'Ender Doctrine'. Of course I had no idea what she was talking about then, but since Ender's Game is one of my programmer side's favorite books I understand her a lot better."

"While she was ready enough to talk about most things to her friends, even the attack itself, she never mentioned Tom when she talked about her past. Even after all this time, after killing the monster that hurt her, putting Tom's ghost to rest, and moving in with Josh you could still sometimes see hints of that old pain. I think it was only her faith in God and falling in love with Josh that kept her from going off the deep end. You and I seem to both have had a fair bit of crap dumped on us, but she had it worse." A sigh.

"Sarah was the real brains of the group. Whenever we were digging into old tomes or books of eldritch lore she lead the charge. Josh tended to be right behind her, while Gabe and I flipped through and made jokes about the freaky pictures. Of course when it came time to stomp on the vampires, she didn't do as well. Still tenacity, a total lack of fear, and a willingness to cheat helped."

"All that studying of magic lore did have an effect on her and by the time we were out of high school she was casting spells pretty regularly. Not just the one off rituals that we pieced together to banish a specific demon or monster, but real spells. Stuff like you... well you would believe considering what I read on Wikipedia. She wasn't as powerful as most of the superheroes I read about, but she could toss vamps around with her mind and throw a fireball if things were really desperate. I nearly peed myself the first time I saw her do it."

"After high school, things are starting to get a bit fuzzier. I know she went off to college, and studied something. The Band still existed for a while, but with us starting to go off on our own, like I said we drifted apart. I got better with the whole research thing, but I know that whenever I ran into something I didn't get I would call her up."

Alex falls silent for a little bit. "That's pretty much the last I remember. I guess my post high school memories haven't managed to settle in very well yet. The gaps there would be really freaking me out if it wasn't for everything ELSE that's happened inside my head so far."

Suddenly she barks a little laugh. "And you were apologizing about rambling. See, I'm worse then you are. Nothing to apologize for... assuming you'll forgive my own ramble."

"Arigato Goziamasu, Alex-san." Jiro tiredly fished out the plastic bag full of dirty laundry from her pack. Hrm... that shirt got torn when Alex was wearing it, and that set's all... sewery... A lopsided grin. "It is time and past for this... and I may need to replace a few of these... the coin laundry here may not be up to defeating the sewer. Still, I greatly appreciate the help, Alex-san."

As her friend left to do laundry, Jiro shucked off shirt and pants, climbing under the blankets on the bed. Though her head was filled with maudlin memories and a vague disquiet from the thing that had infested Johnny, she was tired enough to drift off quickly on her own.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Jiro Koji walks through the darkness, a deeper shadow stalking him. The martial artist ghosts through it, her lithe form gliding from one safe nook to the next sheltering cranny. Jiro feels some vague, threatening thing growing closer, and redoubles his efforts, her deft fingers scrambling for handholds as he scrambles up a wall; trying to distance herself from whatever is following. Finally, he rolls over the top of the wall onto a roof. Before her, she sees the hunched form of Johnny. The silent vampire turns his head, and two pits of soul-drinking darkness glare at him hungrily. Jiro turns, intent to flee, but behind her is a great, looming blackness made of fear and death and endless, ravening hunger.

The blackness speaks; You were delicious, little warrior, the taste you gave me. I will sup deep upon your soul soon... Talons of pitted obsidian reached for his throat-

In the hotel bed, Jiro sat up abruptly, waking with a wordless cry. For a long moment she sits there shaking, hugging herself as the last moments of the dream fade. Finally, she slides out of bed, one hand rubbing at her forehead as the other fishes for clean clothes, pulling on a grey T-shirt and sweats.

Afternoon light streams in from outside, and she exits the hotel room, still barefoot, snagging some cold pizza as she goes. Outside, she sees Alex, and sits beside her in the sunlight. "Thank you for letting me sleep, Alex-san. It... helped. And thank you for doing laundry. What is our next step?"

"Da nada." Alex replied, carefully not commenting on what she heard when Jiro awoke.

"Our next step should be to keep the pressure on, I think. We've taken out pretty much the whole offshoot group and that means there isn't going to be anything keeping the other group in check. If we move tonight, we should be able to watch them as they find out about what happened. How they react should be revealing."

Jiro nodded slowly. A logical plan. I would prefer not to act at night, but he- no, this is probably almost all Alexandria, so she - is right about keeping the pressure on. "So, in essence, look for a point of weakness and hammer on it? That sounds reasonable."

A pause. "That said, diving in headlong could be quite dangerous while the things are awake and alert. We shall have to pick our moment."

She took bite of pizza, then, "Have you learned anything that gives you a more specific idea of where to find them, or will we be scouting this the hard way?"

As they settled in to watch, Jiro turned their last several fights over in his mind. I have been consistantly struggling to bring decisive harm to these creatures... But Alex has not. The family school is... perhaps ill suited to battling the living dead. I need to do something that will hurt.

Still watching the street, he ghosted to Alex's position, and said, in a voice pitched to carry no further than their ear, "Alex-san; can I borrow a few of your stakes? I... believe I will have need of them, should the fighting become intense." A small pain in the pride. Oh, how I dislike such. But it will likely aid my odds this night.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Night soon falls. It does not take long for the vampires to come out.

There are a full dozen in the group. The pack walks through the Ruthless Asian Gang territory with confidence. The stop at a number of buildings, apparently ones frequented by the other gang. All are empty.

One of them, who looks to be the leader, does take a long look at the rooftop where Jiro and Alex are hidden but doesn't seem to see anything.

Jiro can make them out saying something about how the rumours were true, something had taken their opponents out. There is some disappointment expressed in that they were not going to be able to teach them a lesson themselves but for the most part the vampires are gloating.

When they get to the house that was attacked today, the leader and two others go inside. They ignore the police tape, and have no trouble with the locked front door. After about fifteen minutes the reemerge.

A couple hours later the vampires have returned to what is believed to be their territory. They enter an abandoned townhouse. One stays outside, smoking a cigarette.

After a moment he returned his attentions to the surroundings, keeping watch while mulling things over. I have a bad feeling about waiting, and yet... at least a dozen vampires or more in that building. As well as that... thing... that infested Johnny. A pause. No. I will be patient. We are not superheroes, to charge foolishly into certain doom. I must be vigalent and patient. We are hunting these creatures, not facing honorable opponents, or even dishonorable ones.

Moving to her, his ki shifts into a pale blue luminescence. "Please excuse my hands, Alex-san. I fear we cannot linger long. I got rid of the one on the roof, but only temporarily. As you suggested, this is probably a good time for us to fade. Merciful Spirit's Grasp." Ki energy flows from Jiro into Alex's bruised body, guiding its own energies to health.

Alex just lay back as the vampires fled, breathing shallowly thanks to the ribs she was certain were broken. That had been profoundly painful. Thank God for Jiro.

Jiro Koji:
"Please excuse my hands, Alex-san. I fear we cannot linger long. I got rid of the one on the roof, but only temporarily. As you suggested, this is probably a good time for us to fade. Merciful Spirit's Grasp."

The girl relaxed for the coming healing, which by now as becoming familiar and welcome. Jiro's hands came to rest on her body and the warmth started to flow into her.

That flow became a flood as it found her rib. She sat bolt upright, her eyes wide.

"Wow." She exclaimed, as she probed at her formerly broken ribs.

"That was..." Alex looked at Jiro with wonder on her face.

As the pair gets closer they can make out what sounds like chanting. There is only one voice, a woman's. The words are not in any language that the either of our heroes can understand.

By the time they get to the edge of the grove, it is evident that there are a few well shielded candles burning in the middle. The woman is short, perhaps 5'4", wearing a long white dress. She has her back to them.

Alex draws closer and rustles some branches in the process. The woman whirls around to face the sound, settling into a defensive stance that speaks of much experience.

"Who's there?" she says in a low voice, one hand down by her side near a hidden knife that Jiro spots.

The most striking thing about the woman are the three jagged scars that cover most of her face. It is clear that at some point she had a close encounter with something with large claws.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

The infamous Sarah. Kamis, Alexandria has some incredible friends. She has been gone from her home perhaps a week and already they search. As Jiro's mind began to furiously grind on ideas and notions, he took in the sight. The scars were no less horrible than Alex had mentioned, though looking now he could see they hadn't been a discouragement to some gentleman, oh, six or seven months ago. She seemed relieved, surprised, a bit confused and happy.

Mind, given what Alexandria-chan told me of her friends, I do not know why I am surprised by her appearance. They have already walked through fire and strife for one another, what is world-walking in light of such? His smile then turned into a frown. Of course... I have no idea what this is doing to Alexander. He is already buffeted by Alexandria's memories... this cannot be helping...

For a long moment, Jiro stood in indecision, then he schooled his features to a gentle smile and stepped into the light. Hands at his sides in a deceptively relaxed stance, he stands there, giving the two vampire hunters their moment.

Once I see how she reacts to me, I will determine how I shall react to her.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Oh. That's... not great but I think it explains a lot. I've heard of stranger things happening with dimensional magic... and I think Taruko-Sensei even said time dilation could be an effect. Mindful of the wary look Sarah was giving him, Jiro gave a slight bow, hands open and in plain sight. "I would be honored, if you would permit me, Sarah-san. My name is Jiro Koji, and Alexandria has told me much about you, calling you a true and valued friend."

He took a moment to gather his thoughts. "Three nights ago, I was taking an evening walk; unable to sleep, when I heard an altercation. Several armed thugs were attacking Alex-san. I helped her fend them off, and loaned her some clothes as, ah, she had arrived naked. After that, we, well, we went for coffee, as Alex-san was disoriented and did not recognize this place." He gave a faint smile. "For reasons you can likely guess. We were attacked by a trio of vampires and dispatched them. From then, we went to a place of safety to wait for morning."

"From what I have seen and heard from Alexandria, I know that must sound strange, but there is a reason for such... Whatever magic brought Alexandria to this world picked up... for lack of a better term, a passenger. A Computer Programer named Alexander. Alexandria's consciousness was... dormant, that first night, for the most part. This world is alien to Alexander as well, and it seems he was first from another world than Alexandria."

"I, as a mage of your ability has no doubt already realized, suffer from a curse. I am in this city searching after a rumor of a cure. Alex-san and I decided to work together in following that rumor up. We did not yet know of Alexandria, though I began to suspect there was another consciousness within Alex's mind over the day's course. After some small tasks, we were granted an audience with the sorcerer Dragoneye, of whom I assume you have heard. I realize, now, that he is likely connected with... unsavory elements, and that his promise to aid us in exchange for a boon is likely false."

"The boon he asked was to locate and if possible slay the forces of Vampires that have lately taken root in this city, and we felt it worth pursuing whatever Dragoneye's sincerity. The pursuit of vampires began to wake Alexandria's memories, and, to my shame, I did not react well. I boast only a little skill in the mystic arts. Still, it was enough to begin to puzzle out what had brought Alex-san here. There are still remnants of the summoning sigl that called them here, by the way, and while I understood them in part I would welcome a chance to look at them with the aid of a dedicated mage such as yourself."

"We have exterminated the vampires who had placed themselves within the Ruthless Asian Gang, and have dealt some small blows to the others, as well as located one of their safe houses. Which brings us to this place. I would be grateful, to add the skills of one such as yourself to ours, to destroy these vampires and thence to find a way to return you to your proper homes."

"You know Alexandria already. Alexander adds to her skills considerable prowess with electronics. I am a martial artist and ki user, and a healer of some ability. I also possess some mystic knowledge, which, given what you have said, leads me to suspect that Alexandria was also swept into this 'escape portal' that gathered you, but some aspect of her abilities caused it to affect you differently, hence your arrival some months ago and Alex arriving only recently."

And... that's all I can think of at the moment. "Gomen, I have a tendency to ramble. That is our tale thus far." He takes a relaxed, open stance, and waits.

For a long, long moment, Jiro stared down at Alex, pity, confusion, and determination warring behind brown eyes as he turns all he has heard over and over in his mind. A claim of lack of memory, yet we know there is a hole in Alexandria's memories... her life past high school... I know of spells and creatures who can do what Sarah says is happening... what my observations and all I know of mental health SAY is happening...

And yet, I would swear on my honor that no-one here is deliberately lying to me. Either 'Alexander' truly is a victim here, and this was not deliberate, however unlikely a person being mindjacked into the same skull twice, or he is some malignant thing, very skilled in the arts of deception. Sarah watches and listens carefully, her face still locked in an expression of anger. "Tell you? Fine. I don't think you're actually involved in what ever that thing in my friends head is."

Sarah seems to calm slightly, and describes what happend.

"It was a couple years back. One morning Alex starting acting strange. We were getting ready to confront her when she pulled me aside and confessed that she was actually someone else who woke up in Alex's body. He claimed the last thing he remembered before he woke up here was waking up in his bed and then looking back at himself. Long story short, we found a ritual that could be used to send a spirit back to it's home and free the trapped mind within. Along the way we stopped a would be apocalypse and some assorted demons."

"The spell was dangerous to cast and we had a much easier option that would just kick him out of Alex's body. We did it because we were convinced that he wasn't at fault for what had happened. The spell worked, and eventually Alex got over being trapped in her own body, able to look but not touch."

"If I thought for even a moment that he would ever come back..." The woman fixes a deadly glare on the still sobbing Alex.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Jiro's expression, a careful neutral, hardened at Sarah's words. Mind rape, or as near as to make no difference. His mind ran once more over the events of the last few days, catching on various incidents, various statements.

"I never should have trusted you, Alexander. But it is well I did not simply let you vanish into the night. You claim to be a victim, but all you can speak in your defense is that this is all some tragic misunderstanding. That you have done nothing wrong. I do not believe it. This is not some bad movie, you are no John McClain to be swept into the same tragedy twice..."

He paused for a moment, forcing himself to calm down. "I do not know what you are, but you are no innocent programmer. Picking locks, lying like an expert... no, you are no innocent. No kindly, doddering man caught in some spider's web." Another pause for a calming breath. I have failed utterly here, and an innocent might die because of it. I cannot allow that to happen. Not again. Never again.

Bright blue energy begins to gather around his fists, almost in a solid form. "You know what I am capable of. What knowledge I possess, what skills. Get out of her head, now, or I will bend all my will to aiding Sarah-san in tearing you out of there and extinguishing your essence. I have made my decision on rapists, Alexander, and they DO represent a time I am willing to destroy."

Alex flinches from each hate filled word. They seem to crush her farther and father into the ground. "I can't." she sobs "I can't get out of my own head! If I'm some kind of demon who is making my life hell *sob* then I DON'T KNOW IT! So just do it already. Do whatever you have to do. End this. End me and let me heal."

"I can't take this any *sob* more. Why is this happening to me?"

Quietly, he glances to Sarah and says, "What aid can I give you to help her? I am no mage, but I am a healer of some skill, and I have a fair knowledge of the mystic arts." I might even be able to heal your scars, but now is not the time to offer...

She turns to Jiro. "The circle I made to send my call for help will work. Put her in the middle and then stand over there. I'll cast the spell from over here."

Sarah points to a point on the opposite side of the circle from where she plans to be standing.

"I understand." Jiro forced himself to be calm, forced himself to hold it together, even as his emotions whirled. Face a wooden mask, he knelt, and lifted Alex gently, taking care to not let skin touch skin as he remembered her reactions earlier that day.

He walked into the circle and gently laid Alex down, then moved to the spot Sarah had indicated, standing ready to offer aid or protection. And his mind lashed him with chains of ice for his part in the pain and violation that had gone unnoticed. At the bellow of anger and rage he had loosed on the victim in the erstwhile protection of the attacker.

Sarah starts to chant in Latin. Jiro notices that the candles start to flicker in perfect synchronization, ignoring the breeze that made its way through the grove.

The chanting reaches a crescendo as Sarah points her hand at Alex. Alex twitches, the first movement she's made since being set down.

Sarah repeats the last sequence and makes the gesture again. This time Alex convulses for a moment and lets out a low moan.

Sarah does it again. Alex's convulsions are stronger this time, and she cries out in pain.

Sarah's face is hard as she starts the sequence again.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Oh, that cannot be a good sign. Even as he thought this, even as his thoughts filled with recrimination and self condemnation, some small, professional aspect of his mind watched Sarah work, and recognized it as an exorcism ritual, and likely a powerful one. I can think of few things indeed that could resist such a banishment. It should be up to removing any evil spirit or demon I can think of... But it's not working. What is Alexander, if this is not working? What COULD he be?

The ball of fear and raw horror began to coil in his stomach more tightly as he considered the implications. For a brief instant, he considered interrupting Sarah, but stopped himself. I do not recognize this ritual... breaking it now could do even greater harm to Alexandria. And I wish I knew what was going on. Merciful Kamis, please, help us...

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

quote:
She stares at her feet, talking in bursts. "Vampires. It all comes back to the Vampires. We fight them, and it makes me remember... remember what? I... who am I? I... I am Alex. Alexander? No... Alexandria. No, Wait. Both. Neither. I... I... am... Alex. That's who I am. Alex. Just... just Alex."

She looks up and almost shouts her next words. "I Remember! I was at home, and then... I saw... something. Then darkness and I was at home, but not my home. It was... yes. The Vampires, no, later. They were later. We fought, had to fight! The Vampires, and the... the demon... no, Demons. They wanted to kill everything. I couldn't fight so I had to fight... They fought with me, helped me. I helped them. We won."

"I REMEMBER! They helped me. I was hurting me, and they helped me stop... how? I don't know. I DON'T KNOW!" Alex falls to her knees.

"i remember... The Darkness... I was in the darkness. It... I wouldn't end. I was there and there and there and... then I was home... but it was home, I was already there... I... I got scared and yelled, and then I was in the darkness. It was longer... forever... I was in the darkness and it hurt... it hurt so bad... why wouldn't it stop? Oh... it hurt so bad... mama... it hurt..." Alex breaks into tears, yet keeps talking through the sobs.

"I remember... They found me, and they talked and talked and talked and none of it meant anything... I could hear them... see them... but they made no sense... too big... it was just too big... they wouldn't fit! They talked and the words made me break... they were too big... not right... they... did... something..."

"I remember... they were sad? But not sad... it was too big to be sad and it hurt so bad and they did something... and it hurt... I saw me... and the pain... oh why won't it stop... please let me die... anything... just stop the pain... and no. They said no... and then they stopped... and the Darkness came back... but short... and the pain stopped... and I forgot! I was here! but I REMEMBER!"

"I remember..." Alex collapses, still muttering "I remember"

Of a sudden, Alex's rant the night before returned to him, and he swore, soft but heartfelt. After a moment, he found his voice again. "Sarah, stop. Please. I think I know what is wrong." Briefly, he summarized Alex's ranting and raving of the night before. Then, "I think... I think either whatever is in Alexandria's head has linked itself so tightly to Alexandria's soul that it cannot be removed without causing her grave harm, or... they are two separate people whose souls have already begun to merge, with no malice involved, with the same net end."

A pause. "We may be able to bring in other, more powerful help. A powerful mage owes us a boon for our actions against the vampires in this city." We know enough of where the rest of them lair to fulfill our end of the bargain. I trust Dragoneye but a little, but he has no reason to bear Alexandria any malice, and I can always offer him some additional service on my part for this.

He dropped to his knees, bowed to her. "Please, this is accomplishing nothing... I ask that you let me help your friend."

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

Sarah seemed to pay Jiro little attention at first, intent on completing her incantation.

A ghostly version of Alex emerged connected to the physical body by strands of white light. The 'ghost' looked liked it was being pulled out of her, and the strands seemed to strain under the pressure. The ghost Alex writhed in pain while the physical one's muscle locked in agony.

Some of the strands break, and the ghost seems to fade a little. Before any more can, the incantation comes to an end and the ghost was pulled back into Alex.

Sarah wavers on her feet, struggling to control her breathing. She looks at Jiro, acknowledging him for the first time since this started.

"You," she gasped "You might be right. This isn't working."

Sarah looked like she was about to say something more, but collapses instead.

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

As Sarah collapses Jiro quickly moves to her side. That's not a good sign. That's probably about as bad a sign as what almost happened with Alex...

He quickly checked Sarah's vitals, but in his distraction he could tell little. She's very pregnant, and she just collapsed exhausted... Should I heal her? A pause, and he glanced to Alex for a moment as his mind raced again. Soaked in sweat, breathing shallowly, she looked like the bad end of an adrenaline crash.

Back to Sarah. This doesn't look good... But I have never healed a pregnant woman. I do not know what it might do to the child... I don't think it would induce labor, and Sarah seems to be in rough shape... A fall like that can be bad for a pregnant woman, I know that much... Pale blue ki shrouded his hands. "Great and powerful Kamis, if you have any good will left to lend me, I ask that you prevent this from doing further harm. Please excuse my hands, Sarah-san."

Then he placed one hand on the center of her chest, the other on her forehead, and let the healing energies flow; soothing hurts and bringing what healing he could. "Merciful Spirit's Grasp."

Sirens. Kuso. Time to leave. He looked Sarah over. She's looking better... And she and the child both feel... stronger... now. Probably safe to move her. Quickly, he checked Alex over as well. Nothing seemed physically wrong with her, but she looked like she was exhausted. She won't be moving under her own power, not any time soon...

He licked dry lips. "Sarah-san, can you hear me?" There was no response, and for a moment he wrestled with indecision. I cannot carry them both... Gently, he put a hand on Sarah's shoulder, shook her gently. "Sarah-san, please wake... We need to get out of here..."

"So far as I can tell, there is nothing physically wrong with her, she is simply... spent." After a moment of making sure Sarah was not in danger of falling again, he quickly moved to Alex's side and lifted her, one arm beneath her legs and the other beneath her back.

He looked back to Sarah. "I think, at this point, our best bet is to make our way out of here and pretend to be innocents. If we try to flee through the bushes and are spotted, it will not go well for us. If we are on the paths, and present ourselves as victims fleeing some kind of attack, our odds would perhaps be better."

I am not hopeful of my odds of actually escaping, not carrying Alex... and I do not know how good Sarah is at moving through the woods or with stealth.

"Even here, healing is a rare skill. I have dedicated great effort in learning it, as a part of my art and skill in manipulating Ki. The full explanation is too long and technical for a location such as this, I would prefer to wait until we are off the streets." Mind, if you're half so knowledgeable with lore as Alex implied you'll probably get a good handle on it before I'm half done explaining.

"As for the child, as best I could tell he is fine. My apologies, Sarah-san, but I have little experience with pregnancy. I... do not have the knowledge to say more with any certainty. My medical knowledge is focused primarily on the kinds of wounds and sprains one suffers while training or fighting. I knew the collapse and fall could be a danger, to you and the child both. I thought healing you carefully was a lesser risk than simply leaving you there." He gave another small bow.

"Are you ready to continue? We should be able to get a cab around here, and make our way to a safe place."

"Be it ever so humble, I believe is the usual phrase. Feel free to make yourself comfortable, Sarah-san. There is bottled water in the fridge, and there should still be a slice or two of pizza..." Lines of worry writ large across his features, his concern for Alex overriding his usual collected and calm nature, Jiro took the time to give the Slayer a proper check-over.

Pulse is good. Breathing is steady. No obvious wounds that I can see... Jiro pulled back one eyelid, shrouded a finger in glowing blue, began to move it. No pupil dilation, and she does not track it... For a thoughtful moment, he rubbed his chin in thought, then shifted his ki and shrouded both hands in soft, diffuse blue light. "Merciful Spirit's Grasp," he said as he laid healing hands on forehead and base of throat. Nothing seemed to happen, which he'd half expected.

For a moment he sat their in worried thought, then he glanced to Sarah. "There is nothing physically wrong with her, as best I can tell. She is simply... overcome by the night's ordeal." And you nearly tearing her soul out. And me not stopping you from tearing her soul out until it was almost too late. Merciful Kamis...

Re: Chapter 3 - Dawn of Dreams

For a few hours Jiro hunted online, illuminated only by the light of the LCD screen. He read medical sites and delved into some of the mystic forums he was at least nominally a member of (though Kamis knew he spent little enough time on them), looking for information to fill some of the gaps in his knowledge that had, rather forcibly, been shoved in his face this night. His mid-afternoon nap held him in good stead here, and he was able to stay awake and attentive long enough that he was reasonably sure he had learned a few things.

He also took the opportunity to email a few of his more mystically minded contacts (a much better source of information than sorting through the dross on even the better moderated message boards) giving no specifics but enough generalities to, he hoped, generate some useful responses. While he got a few quick greetings and one "Thought you were dead, boygirl," nobody had anything useful for him in those few hours.

Every few minutes, he glanced to the motel room's door and window, looking for any sign of unwanted attention or visitors. Thank the Kamis, nothing appeared.

Just as he prepared to shut down and sleep, he debated for a long moment, then sent a final email to an address he knew was monitored.

Omiko-sama

I know it has been some time since I have written you. Life has been... complicated for this one of late. I hope this message finds you well. I hope it finds you at all. I still care for you and I hope to see you again someday.

Ever your friend,

-Jiro Koji

He waited a few moments, hoping. He knew that Takashi had one of his pawns watch his daughter's mail. There was only a small chance the email would even stay there long enough for her to find it... but it was a chance, and he was glad to take it.

Shutting down the laptop, he placed it on an end table and stretched out, finding fitful sleep.
