I am here. Good to see everyone once again.

Hello!

The "world info" act is now pulled over. To refresh our memories, I'll be putting up chapter summaries over the next few days.

I've c/p'd the descriptions from StoryCrafter, but feel free to amend/expand them.

Also: I'm going to try, at some point, to standardize and update the character sheets. They are, to be perfectly frank, a mess.

Odds are good that I'll be running most combats "fast-and-loose"--Taija will know what I'm talking about, since it's how I ran her prelude. Effectively, the numbers will matter only when you want them to. If and when we make it to a "boss fight" where there's a legitimate chance of DOOM, I'll tighten things up. But there's no reason to make everybody roll dice all the time for fights that, at this point, they're pretty much destined to win. We can work together to make them interesting, and I'll be stealing your hit points and such as the situation calls for it, but "epic" stories don't go off the rails because somebody rolls poorly against minions or interruptions.

I have let Cade know that I'm trying to rev things up again; dunno whether he has time to come over. I'm also not sure how we'll end up doing with getting the whole cast over. I know some good players here on RpOL--how would people feel about new players taking over some of the old characters?

I'm perfectly ok with the addition of some new blood if it'll keep the party together.  This is a good story and deserves to be plotted to the end.  And then cleaned and published.  Yeah.

New blood is fine with me as well. I know a few long time players who might be willing to take over characters if I asked, but I'm holding off mentioning the idea until I know where we stand as a unit.

If needed, we can even backtrack a bit if you're taking over and Cade's too busy. I have no problem jumping back or even restarting if we needed to. This has always been a fun game and a great group.

I have no problem with new blood. I know that Elrohir won't be joining us, because he's busy with a new job, & just doesn't have the energy for something else right now. He's at a point of feeling he doesn't get enough time with the baby, Sari, & me, so anything else on his plate is a no go.

I definitely won't be going backward. There's too much accumulated history, and I want to push things ahead to get up some momentum.

That said, I'm not going to start feeling out potential replacement players for at least a week. I know I don't check SC that often, and I want to give stragglers a chance to show up.

Any new characters will probably come from the mercenaries and dwarves at the Delve. Maybe somebody could take over Amras, for example, or one of the dwarven paladins. At any rate, I won't be culling any of the original characters, even if I have to NPC them for a while.

Feel free to post in the relevant IC thread if you'd like. I won't move the plot ahead until personnel issues are settled, but there's plenty of room for you guys to <s>panic</i> express your feelings about the sudden atmospheric change.

I'm cool with new blood, though I'm also down with the idea of us getting used to this again.  :)

As for the old game, can we leave it up?  If not, can we gradually move entire threads over here?  I can do that for mine in my spare time - I don't want to lose what has been already written!  :D

I've got no plans to pull down the SC story. There's so much there. I hope that, eventually, I can get it all pulled offline and cleaned up.

I'm going to create a new "highlight reel" topic...feel free to c/p any of your favorite sequences there, with the following caveats:

1. Make sure you pull the SC information out of them (you can't c/p large blocks of text without catching the player info, for example...leave that and any individual post titles out).

2. Try to get complete/scenes images. Short scenes are fine, but they should be complete enough that somebody unacquainted with the story can have a sense of what's going on in them.

Sheets should be user editable now. I've put up a template in the "Logistics" thread. For most of you, it's going to be a good chunk of work getting that information together--feel free to shoot me PMs if you have questions.

I'll get my sheet moved over as quickly as I can. Marc gets his next set of shots today, so it's going to be an interesting week if it's anything like the 2 month shots... This said, it might take me awhile, especially if I have any leveling to do...

It's going to be a bit difficult for the levelling I'm afraid. My large external HD died taking with it all of my D&D books. Just reformatted this computer due to a hard drive/video issue as well. So just reinstalled my stuff here and need to refind my D&D books.

For basics there's always the D&D Hypertext website, but I imagine you're using large amounts of other books.

Goodness, there's no doubt about that!  ^_^  I've read the whole story, so that much is obvious.

We have an awful lot of elves. 'Drin wasn't that tall even back when he was human.

Still haven't heard anything from Cade, so I'm working on a short list of potential new additions. I'd like to get us back to six or seven players, with somebody taking over Eladrin if necessary--he's been such a central plank in the narrative that it'd be a shame to cast him aside.

Anyway. I'm sort of afk for the weekend starting tomorrow afternoon. Nothing important IC will happen before the 21st.

Hopefully that won't be necessary, as I figure it'll really mess up the relationship between him and Bronwyn.  :(  And it would be nice to have everyone back!

As I've said before, the functionality here is great. It's a pretty Spartan look and feel, but in terms of managing different groups and keeping things clear, it's good.

And you've already picked out a portrait...I doubt it will take long for you to come up to speed.

Don't sweat the numbers--as I mentioned, I'll be largely ignoring them except at critical junctures in the story. After so many years, I trust you all. Besides, I tend to play fast-and-loose with the numbers at the best of times.

I encourage folks to post their favorite moments in the "highlight reel" topic. It's a good excuse to get lost in the SC archives (if you have the time to do so), and a good way of reacquainting yourself with our story.

Yeah, after using SC for close to, what, 10 years now, it'll just take some getting used to, is all. ^_^

I don't know if BBR has any pull with Shannara...it'll get through more quickly if you assure them that you're actually using the character and it's a long-term one!  :)  Then they know the portrait isn't just being tossed in for some NPC.

Not to worry - I'm waiting for mine.  In the meantime, it's in my character description.  ^_^

I can understand how bizarre this must look.  I've been bouncing back and forth, so it's hard to remember sometimes that people from each place haven't touched the other one at all.  And I don't know if you ever tried PBweb, but that site was a dinosaur.  :(

BBR is certainly one of the mod-squad hereabouts, but I'm not sure he actually has any pull to say "Shannara, get THAT pic done before the others in the line".  :)  The system for pics here is a lot more complicated than the one on SC (something better about SC).  ^_^

They would like pics to be 100x100 pixels and under 5K in size.  Took a bit of work for mine - reducing image quality bit by bit until it dropped down to the right amount - but it worked out.

This is a website I'm around a LOT more. I was reading the posts and had to agree. Storycrafter is nice... but I'm on Rpol 99% of the time I'm actively on the web. So this is a great change and should aid me in actually being well... active.

We must have an Eladrin. Aside from that, it'd be nice if we had a magic-oriented character, but swords and sorcery is usually far heavier on the swords in terms of heroes anyway.

I spent the day driving home from Nebraska--a day later than planned because of the blizzard we had here in the Cities. I'll start sorting out book-keeping stuff over the next few days. If anybody has urgent questions regarding character abilities, let me know ASAP, because I'd like IC posting to re-start Wednesday.

I love mages. I actually was originally going to be a mage here, but decided when looking at the characters to submit a healer type instead.

We don't have any mage-types?  I guess a bard and a cleric aren't the same thing.  :(

Unlike Sari, I rarely play mages.  Oh, I appreciate them, but I can't seem to play them.  :)

I think I'm okay with bookkeeping...well, I don't have a regional language, but other than that I'm fine.  :)

If we didn't need a cleric I'd switch, or arrange with the GM for Sari to alter into a mage.

You could always be that prestige class that does both... :)

Just to be clear for everybody:

I'm picking this game up because of the work we've put into it--and into the characters--deserves a real conclusion. I can't promise we'll get to that. But it's about the characters we've developed and the story we're telling. I understand the fun in tactical and strategic challenges, but the way Cade handed out bonuses, it was pretty clear that this game has never really been about constant personal danger to the PCs.

It's about saving the world, and it's epic. That means the PCs get to be a little larger than life, that they don't have to worry about mooks, and that not having somebody around to throw high-level dispel magics or delayed blast fireballs or Mordenkainen's Swiss Army Knife isn't that big a deal.

Numbers and skills will pretty much always take a back seat to "cool" or "makes narrative sense."

(As for me, I pretty much always play rogues, fighters, or bards that take a bit from both concepts.)

As a Bard/Loredelver, Reanna's got some pretty decent magic, even if she doesn't quite qualify as a mage. Even if she can't cast a detect magic spell. lol

Ok first - Are we using the same system as the Storycrafter game, or are we updating to something else? Second - if we need a magician, and we're updating I have some ideas. I can modify Jancus to provide magical support. If everything is staying the say then... well maybe not. But I have some neat ideas that wouldn't have to change his background much at all.

I think the group is pretty stellar as is.  We have a diverse combat set with some minor magical support already.  We're good at beating up badguys.  I like that.

I must also say that I like our characters as they've developed.  I couldn't see Suku as anything but a wee samurai with a crackling katana and an honor streak five miles deep.  How our characters operate have helped define who they are.  I, for one, think we should maintain our focus, get a 'drin, and kick some Tenma butt.

Also, I'm thrilled you got home safely, bro.  I was watching the road reports all day.

Jancus really hasn't developed much, but not much happened since I joined. I was thinking of the possibility to create a steampunk sorceror for a game I play here. it just happened that Jancus is already a steampunk-style character, so it would fit as well.

Maybe Jancus could switch classes?  Or 'have done so' a level ago, and be on the way?

Just a thought.

I have an 'Altherian Artificer' class from the Arcanis supplement - they're basically fairly good mages (end up getting spells all the way up to 7th level) who can also create 'Clockwork Golems', use flintlock pistols and rifles, and things like that.  Very much steampunk.

Another thought.  :)  Would be happy to write it up for anyone's perusal...

Back from being away all weekend.  Thought I would have had time to work on switching Bron over, but that never happened. :P  I'll see about updating to level 11 today, and at least get the character sheet copied over.  Might even get time to rewrite the character description, since it is SOOOO out of date, considering how she began compatred to how the character evolved to where she is today.

Getting the original 'Drin back would be divine, but isn't it also possible to have the character 'delayed' in someway, so as to have that character off-scene so to speak, and working in the backgrounds.  A mysterious absence is not entirely unheard of, after all.  Not sure how well that gels with what you have in mind, though...

Nice to be able to read Taija's stuff.  Looks great, Hawk and Taija!  Any chance we can 'un-hide' the chapter on SC?

Posting conventions are up.

Hit points are level average+1.5, in keeping with the "larger than life" numbers we've accumulated. So, 8 on a d12, 7 on a d10, 6 on a d8, 5 on a d6, and...4 on a d4. Hrm. Go ahead and make that 9 on a d12 if any of you happen to have that.

In terms of Taija's SC chapter--it needs to remain closed for now, because there are some things in there that will be major plot points for the others.

Okay!  I'll adjust my HP for that.

I still don't know what system we're supposed to be using to update/remake characters!

D&D 3.5. If there's something you want from Pathfinder, let me know--I've only got the core book, but much of it's backward-compatible.

If you're interested in checking out that custom class Taija mentioned, feel free. I've never been rich in d20 splatbooks, and review any "custom" stuff case-by-case. Jancus seems to be set up as ranged/support, which is sort of Elec's role. If there are changes to make to Jancus that further differentiate him in ways you like, we can run with it. Reanna should have us sufficiently covered for arcane magic, so don't feel compelled to push that direction.

Maybe I'll look through my Iron Kingdoms stuff and see if there's anything we can pull from there. I don't really want to put proper guns in PC hands (even if Cade's established that such things exist in limited number in Al-Mecha), but Jancus has already done stuff with grenades/explosives/mechanical things, so there's precedent to expand on that...

Yeah, well I was noticing that myself. Seems you guys already had the crazy-awesome archer. So I wouldn't mind taking him a slightly different path. If I could get some of that class Taija I'd like to look through it.

Jancus, I'll give you the writeup on the class tomorrow.  :)  The whole thing.  And I'll see about the spell lists.

Pity about the lack of guns - the flintlock rules for Arcanis are extremely detailed, have at least three Prestige Classes (the Pistoleer, the Sharpshooter, and the Triggermage), and I have them all worked out in Word files already.

I have to find my books again to update Sari. We lost all the books in the hard drive crash/computer wipe which I've mentioned.

If you're also using the Pathfinder stuff I may look at the cleric/monk classes there in fixing her to the correct level.

I played briefly in a Pathfinder game here which I gave up due to a few things. It's still going but I haven't rejoined yet. But I really liked the way they altered the classes for the most part, especially the magic using classes. The unlimited cantrip idea for mages and the sorcerer power themes really made it quite interesting. I don't remember the monk or cleric changes much, but I have a download of the book somewhere.

I'm hoping to possibly get into another Pathfinder game eventually.

The original Effigy was a mess of 3.0, 3.5, and custom content, along with third-party sources that were often woefully unbalanced. (You should have seen Cade's original version of 'Drin's prestige class...) The GM in me would really like to clean that up and make sure stuff's mechanically more even.

The Storyteller in me (and it's the storyteller that's keenly interested in resuscitating the game) doesn't really care about the numbers in most situations. I'd like to get the numbers and abilities pretty consistent for those times when the numbers do matter, but that's about it.

Pathfinder content, if folks are interested in it, will have to be adapted "backwards" a bit--Pathfinder really thoroughly rewards sticking to your initial class, and provides a lot more feats. Even with the same mechanical framework, the power differential between a 3.5 character and a Pathfinder character can swing pretty wildly in either direction. Mostly, what I'm "opening" are specific feat tracks rather than wholesale class changes. I'll also consider specific class powers on a case-by-case basis.

And yes, Pathfinder sorcerors are sweet.

I agree that Pathfinder stuff would have to be 'downgraded' a little to better mix with any 3.5 stuff people continue to use - Pathfinder classes tend to be...considerably more competent than non-Pathfinder classes.

There's a Pathfinder Hypertext online for those who don't have the rules.

I'll have a look, though honestly...I'm not sure any kind of Pathfinder benefits would help Taija a lot.  :)

Although...the 'rage powers' for the Barbarian work QUITE well with Taija's Prestige Class.

As a point of clarification for those of you less familiar with RPOL's system of private lines/private messages--private lines are generally used in only a handful of different ways:

1. Conveying whispers or telepathic communication--things that wouldn't be audible to the group.

2. Providing information that's not available to the group (e.g., information that only your character rolled high enough on the perception check to get, etc)

3. To ask for information/responses in a way that doesn't clutter up the thread or encourage over-use of the OOC thread. That's what the private line in the "At Sea" thread is doing.

Also: there's no mechanical stuff required yet, so don't feel compelled to wait on a "complete" character sheet to respond.

I've been in Amber: Shadow Wars for nine years this October.  We have a total of 24 195 In-Character posts (some are archived, but the GM keeps track).  I don't even want to know how many OOC posts have been in that game - the GM keeps deleting the OOC threads when they reach a certain number, so by this point nobody is really sure.

Insanity.  *shakes head*

Other games...I've been in some (now ended) that were quite long.  I'm in a Traveller game (same GM) with 4578 posts.  Storycrafter doesn't keep track (which is a pity), but Bronwyn has been in my Jovian Chronicles game since 2003.

And you guys have been playing Effigy Of Fate since 2004!  That's pretty darned amazing!  So everyone here is has at least one ridiculously long-term game under their belt!

I've never gotten into an Amber game that's stuck. I know the books pretty well, btu never really got (or got into) the system. Definitely a good "world" to sustain a long game, though.

Funny thing - it took us about seven years of game play just to reach Amber.  We kept getting sidetracked.

Once we got there?  Well, most of the group has left it again.

Amber itself (and the Amberites) aren't really the focus of this particular game, though they're essential in some ways to the story.  :)  Weird.

Hm.  There's a Pathfinder Fighter ability that would allow Taija to trundle around in Mithril Plate as easily as she currently does in her breastplate.

A full suit of mithril plate just doesn't fit how I envision the character, though.  Guess I won't be bugging Hawk for that one.  ^_^

Another try for story-advancing updates this weekend.

I think that, for the moment, we're going to run without Elec and 'Drin. They'll be back at some point (Elec probably sooner rather than later), but I'm not entirely sure how just yet, and a shipwreck's a good time to get them off camera.

This is exactly why you don't see Drow warships. Dark Elves don't have huge bodies of water underground to need things like large ships, huge docks, or for much swimming...

Because there's going to be some stuff that not everybody should instantly know going on, I've split the main group off from Taija's stuff. Taija--your chapter's going to be done soon, and your new one will likewise be private.

I know everybody loves to see what's going on for the others, but a GM's got to keep his secrets too, you know?

For the main group, feel free to explore what's left of the Wraith. You can assume that all your gear has survived the "event," and that you've also got a few weeks of unspoiled rations to go along with the magic spoon Elec picked up for you way back in Gildenport. Once you've gotten yourselves organized, the first real challenge is going to be getting to shore. Both of the ship's boats are missing.

Elec didn't get one of those Oatmeal Spoons, did he?  :P  Hee hee hee.  Everyone's going to be vegan for a while!

What were they called in 2e?  Myrland's Spoon, or something like that, after the gunslinger-ish character?

Rpol is really different from SC this way - they get a LOT of portrait submissions, many of which they have to do work on (again, unlike SC, people can submit portraits that don't 'fit' the requirements, and the staff here deals with them).

Suku--I'm going to give you a chance to retract/modify that.

Here's the situation, since it still seems to be a little murky:

The companions are on board the mostly-intact hull of the Wraith. A large section of the aft has been ripped away, and the rudder's half-free of its hinges. The mast is gone. The rigging is gone. There's a lot of cosmetic damage to railings and decking and such. Other than that, the ship is intact. (There's a reason Lans valued it so highly.) In theory, if you could magic it to a drydock, it could be repaired.

As it is, you are in what's left of the galley, which is right at the edge of the section that's been ripped away. Everything's a mess, and you can assume a few hit points of cosmetic damage. You don't know what kind of shape the hold is in, or the ship below the waterline. For now, the ship seems stable and not to be sinking.

Though it's tough to see in the gloom, there's a lot less debris on the water than you'd expect. Very little debris at all...no sign of the "missing" pieces of ship.

Good to know.  I'll adjust, likely tomorrow.  Thanks for the opportunity to retract!

Sorry it's a short post, but figured I'd better get something up. Still haven't had a chance to work on my character sheet, hope to get to that soon.

So, I'm auditioning for new players. If I get any good ones, they'll be joining Taija's group (in large part because I want to give her some people who aren't me to go back and forth with). If I find somebody who seems like a quality fit for Eladrin, he or she will be getting a longer spell in a third group (along with Elec) to settle in to the character.

I hope everybody's having a good spring--I'm in the midst of a challenging space of presentations and dissertation stuff, but I'm trying to keep this thing going. It's worth it.

I won't be adding more than three players, tops (one for Eladrin, one for Amras, and one for another mercenary from Dhazjun's expedition), but it seems increasingly likely that I'll be adding the full set.

Elrohir is Sarilinesstra's & my roommate - a member of the family, really. He played for a bit with us when the game was on Storycrafter.

So the primary round of applicants has now been sorted through. We've got a new writer for 'Drin, and one for Amras, and that'll be it for now.

I'm working on wrapping up my semester this week; hopefully I'll be able to get some more work on summaries done Thursday or Friday. In the meantime, the core group can expect an update tonight or tomorrow morning.

The old-timers need to figure out what they're bringing along and any precautions they want to take before they try to get the raft to shore. I'll need to know who's paddling, too, and if you appoint anybody as "lead steerer." You'll need at least two people paddling or at oars (if Jancus installed oars--we can assume that there were a few left from the smashed ship's boat).

So, an update: home from my tournament early (yay?)...less good: home early because I badly broke my nose on the fourth point of the morning, My nose is too swollen for my glasses to sit propoerly on my face right now, so I'm unable to do any sustained computer time.

Still count me as more or less absent for the rest of the weekend.

Ugh!  So sorry to hear, Hawk...it sounds horribly painful.  I've somehow managed to avoid a broken nose, despite years of trying.

Those of you who know me on Facebook already know, but we had a tornado go through our part of Minneapolis yesterday. Our place is fine; we think the kids' daycare is *not*, our home internet went out last night just before 10. We've got police curfews and checkpoints and the whole shebang.

Again, my family and I are fine (not even branches down at our place), but my access is going to be intermittent for the next few days.

The surgery laid me up pretty well... I'm slowly getting back up to speed but have a suspicion that things won't approach normal until Tuesday when I get the splints out of my nose (yes, they put splints inside as well as outside). I've been out of bed more than in bed today, which is a step in the right direction.

Cade has indeed arrived, though we haven't had much chance to confer on expectations and availability and such. My guess is that he'll be primarily a consultant unless his schedule has relaxed a lot more than I suspect. In the short term, the only thing I'm really hoping to turn over to him is the Elec/Eladrin thread, since I always feel a little squeamish when I've got interests on both sides of the table.

For now, though, both the "duets" should carry on. I'll nudge things forward for them this weekend.

Internet's out at home again...we think they inadvertently disconnected us when they connected our new neighbors. That, or it's the heat. Anyway. Updates likely to come pretty close on the heels of getting proper internet back.

Two Sundays in a row! Next week, we'll try for three!

Boat-folks, you're as close to shore as your raft will get you (it's got a deep draft for a raft, you can't muscle it all the way onto the beach). It's an easy jump to dry (thin) land, though. Good work with the obfuscation. We're still in non-trivial combat. Post two rounds' worth of actions (more or less), and I'll get your results up. The Thin Land makes it hard to count targets, but there are at least half a dozen of the shadow things waiting to welcome you to the beach.

In other news, the player who signed on to take over 'Drin hasn't even logged in since the first of June, so I've cut her loose and reassigned the character to Cade. I also dropped him a line to see if I can con him back onto the scene just to play.

Finally added a few NPCs, too.

At the moment, I'm about to wake up the kids and try and get everybody out the door, onto a plane, and thus to Texas. Updates will come Saturday or Sunday, whichever day looks more open.

Good luck with that.  I know how hard it can be to get kids anywhere, much less on a plane. ;)

Totally cheated and did a few pre-Sunday updates in the smaller acts. No pressure, though. The big fight will update Sunday.

Sunday updates might be a little late today (as in, they may not come until tomorrow) because Suku's in town and we're going to watch the Twins lose play this afternoon.

It's kinda like the Knicks man. Yeah, you're rooting for them but you know what's going to happen.

Despite fielding a lineup of also-rans and fill-ins (the vast majority of the season starters are on the DL or have beentraded), the Twins won 11-4. Wild. Updates coming soonish, probably.

Unfortunately, my team, The Mets, lost last weekend when we went to a game.  Ah well. :P

Rode out the hurricane yesterday with no issues.  Hope everything was ok for you Cade, and anyone else that was impacted by it.

Hey Hawk, Hope grants me spell resistance.  Any chance I avoided any of that damage? SR is 12 (5+paladin level).

Pssht, nothing more than a very mild summer rain, cool breeze. It was actually very pleasant. All in all, I was very unimpressed with Irene's impact on my area.

I do know that a few friends of mine down south had their fair share though, still waiting on some call backs on them.

We had some downed trees in NYC, and electrical wires, and the lower lying areas were flooded, but my neighborhood weathered (ha ha) things extremely well, all things considered.

Hey Hawk, so 2 quick questions...1) from what it seems, the only path for us is to enter the cavern? (or go back on the raft/water?).  And 2), did my spell resistance negate any of that ice storm damage. :)

1. Yes, there's only one way out. Tunnels make great railroads. Erm, yes, it's the only way out.

2. No, your SR was not high enough to stave off any of the ice storm damage.
