Probably not a great deal, Those in Megalos know they are a religious order who uses magic freely to do their will. That includes interrogations and punishment for heretics ... the state does try to control them, but they believe that they answer to God, not the emperor, although not out loud too often.  They are extremists in every sense and don't get along too well with the Knights Hospitaller, who are very powerful in and around New Jarusalem, The Hospitallers are forbidden to use magic, but are conservative and unwilling to admit non humans to their order. They particularly despise Elves and Dwarves as Satan's Spawn.
The Templars are an eastern Megailian Order, more controlled by the curia, and thus by the throne. They accept any being of any race if fit to be a knight and willing to take the vows. They are forbidden entry into Caithness specifically by the King of Caithness. Their Seat is in Azer and they promote battle magic.

what's the age? some models with this issue I've been able to replace the charging port, they slide right into a slot on the motherboard and it's about a 30 minute to 1 hour procedure. Others are soldered right on and are trickier but still doable. And cheaper than replacing.

I dont like their business model, I don't like their ethos, I think steve jobs was a bit of a twat there are just so many things.

1) average hardware that looks pretty
 - having basically been a scientist/hacker my whole life, I value utility over aesthetic. I know it's not everyone's focus, but definitely is mine.

2) their repairs, etc. policy and monopoly on everything is really awful.

3) They (like a lot of people) make their products to be easily broken, to encourage replacements and additional costs

4) they permutate products in order to maximise profits. like the head phone jack issue, etc.

5) ....

6) ???

7) profit?

8) Spying.

There are more, but well... that gives an idea :)

Well 1) and 3) are not true...  They have bought better quality stuff that's generally tried and safe, vice the latest and greatest new thing that is not reliable... In 30 years of using their products, I have had one (1) failure; that due to a failed power supply. I am currently using one and have three older models plus a MacBook pro and an older iBook... all of which work just fine, although I did have to replace the iBook battery after 8 years of use... not exactly a failure.

Compared to DELL, COMPAQ and other PC builders, they are as reliable as Gibraltar is strong. I have had screens, hard drives and mother boards break on DELL laptops at work within 6 months of purchase.  COMPAQs that wouldn't accept an update from MicroSloth because it wasn't designed with any ability to upgrade... WinTel PCs are a mixed bag. You can make a good reliable one if you want, but the OS is still it's weak point.

2) is not true at all, we have local folks who will fix your mac or PC... The Mac guys seem to be working in really old systems, because the newer ones haven't gotten to the age when things fail. Go figure...

4) is likely more true than not...  and irritating.

7) is why companies are in business. APPLE is no different than any other, but their business model has been reliable and easy to use products ... regrettably they seem to be sliding toward the MicroSloth business model of late, and THAT will kill them.

8) is less true for APPLE than for MicroSloth, GOGGLE and Others. The US Government is still fighting with APPLE over its security, unlike the other big companies, which gave up everyone's info without any qualms.

So, in every experience I've had with them, all my statements are true.

And there's a difference between "wanting to make money and be profitable"
and "being profitable at the expense of everything else".

Hence why we're going to be fucked in 30-40 years when average global temperature increases to something over 2 degrees (C).

Microsoft and Google and a 100 other companies are also like this. Targeted marketing is horrific and ultimately I think there's really going to be an emergent effect of people being rail-roaded into behaviours and particular ways of thinking as a result of exposure to similar things over time.

For example.
You buy 10 books/things related to classic cars, then are targeted with marketing related only to cars... and you never realise that people have achieved flight in the form of aeroplanes. Or something vaguely to this effect, multiplied across all domains, and progressive over along period of time.

Apple isn't causing the Global Temperature rise, Trump has handled that.

Apples Profits can be argued, but look at Ford's... they make a huge profit (20 to 45%) on every Pick Up they sell and people stand in line to buy them. Look at the Pharmaceutical companies who rape the wealthy so they can sell to the poor as well ... some medicines are 3-500% more expensive on my side of the border than on the Mexican side 10 miles away! Same company, same package, same dosage.

Looks Like the Major companies will run the world soon enough.

Maybe so... but we are down to two players... and you have many distractions in your life. I am playing several characters now, so we are pushing a piece of string at this point.
Maybe I can think up something  and will certainly let you know if I do... but the adventure we are embarked on is no longer reasonably performable.

Ok, all 8 points used. Administration, Leadership, Intelligence Analysis, Strategy, Tactics, Meteorology (Weather Sense) and Tracking, as well as a new Area Knowledge of her home county. This should cover her learning how to run a small county as a druid, and with spells such as Bless plant, I expect it would be a very fertile area so her well fed people should like her a lot. I was thinking we could use some Mass Combat rules, so she is set up for that a bit more, as she is a Countess or something now, right?

Actually Mana varies, being lower as you go west generally, but there are still locations of more or less all over Caithness.
Low Mana is a serious detriment to magic's use. Note that Carricke, Oakwood and likely some other locations are centered in locally normal or higher mana areas.  Dithanar's castle is another such example.

Pretty much sums it up for the moment anyway, actually for the next two months more likely... The player for Dame Toulmin will be away that long.

You could put together a character if you want to chance it...  this would be 20 or so years prior to the last game.

Re: OOC- 5

I think someitmes people just get a bit weary of the character if it's anything like me. I do go on and off with Wulfe a little bit from time to time, or rather than say that I just kind of want to play a different kind of guy every now and then.

Im not sure precisely why this one tailed off, I think there was just a false start for the new adventure then you made the other game, and people started playing there instead.

I prefer fantasty settings with magic if i'm honest. And I like the 'definitive' content of Yrth.

Having said that, the other game isn't bad at all. I jus thtink i' have a lesser understanding of what it's like than i do with caithness and yrth - sometimes makes it harder.

For example, i took guns, thinking i'd be some pistol weilding pirate monkey, but turns out it's so rare that he's barely had chance. And that i'm not near the coast at all!

I'd put my vote to say "dont delete this game"

it's been going way too long to be deleted because of a lull in activity. If you want it to continue, i'll play solo.

Re: OOC- 5

Well "witches" was supposed to give everyone some magical ability to start, which they could build on, but no one was to be a powerful mage to start ...  actually ever, but a powerful witch is not to be trifled with either. The reason the Mages/Church/Nobles suppress them is that they aren't willing to be controlled by those groups.

Yrth is easy to build in, and were I to do so, I'd use much of the same back ground ... but I think Travesty and Response has run it's road to the end.

OK I posted two maps; Group 3 has the Nomad Lands and group 4 has a outline of where the various Kingdoms are... both are very small, as blowing them up makes them pixilate badly.

I'll try and find better maps to replace them with, but thisis a bandaid fix for the moment.

Re: OOC- 5

ALL - we have a disconnect pointed out by the ever alert Roahfustion.

MEASUREMENTS has a coin list that differs from the one in THINGS EVERYONE KNOWS,

The reason is that one was for one place and one for the other.
So, Measurements is valid for Megalos and the Nomad Lands (mostly, athough money will be changed as needed at a cost).
The Coins in Things Everyone Knows were written for Caithnes and the Arab lands to the south, so Al Haz, Al Wazif and Cardiel which trades in both. Sahud also has both plus it's own coins.

The Dwarves do things strictly by weight and prefer the more valuable metals. After all, who wants a pocket full of copper or bronze when it could be gold. ;-)

Elves don't use money if they can avoid it, and if they can't they use whatever they have or can get. Goblins used to have their own currency, but it has been largely supplanted by Megalian money.

Barter is still widely accepted among the less wealthy thoughout Yrth. In many places, coin is not readily accepted as it is perceived to be useless unless another trader is around.

Hope all this makes some sense.

Roahfustion get 2 cp for pointing out the disconnect.

Yes, it's a colloquialism, sorry, I used it without thinking too hard.

Smalls in its older usage would refer to small-clothes, i.e. undies, but more modern (english) usage refers to small people, as in "not in front of the children".
IC it referred to the orphans, but I was also being careful in case any minors were reading.

At the top of your window should be a list of things, one being die roller.
3D6 is the Normal for most actions, but weapon damage can be something else. The roller is editable so you can roll 1, 2 or 3 D6.
You can change a lot more, but not for this game system.. It also allows you to inut what you ar rolling for as well.

Your action and next action may work together, if you throw the hachet and then close, he has to (hopefully) avoid the hachet and then deal with whatever you are swinging. That puts him at a disadvanatge, not huge, but something.

Still, my skill at throwing a hatchet exceed my skill at hitting with one in melee, so my follow up to throwing one hatchet is throwing the other [Ambidexterity]. By the time he deals with that, I'd hope to be in reach of a Karate roll.

You have all the skills for omething called Parkour .. Eoropean, but no reason there isn't an oriental version.
Parkour 6 ACT4:19

Acrobatics DX+0 4 B174
Climbing DX+0 2 B183
Escape DX-1 2 B192
Jumping DX+0 1 B203

I believ ethe points are cumulative, so the 6 points for Parkour  include the skills you already have, anyway look up Parkour and see how it might fit with your Character. It does allow or some pretty nifty tricks, but won't allow you to jump 30' in the air and land softly 22 yards away , sorry.

Re: OOC- 5

To start, parkour isn't mentioned in GURPS Basic and I don't yet have the Martial Arts book. I heard a discussion, some years back of including it but I know nothing substantive on the subject other than the history of parkour...  Which predates parkour by about 30 years.

While the US and Europe were making and watching American period pieces, heavy on gunfighting, called "Westerns," Chinese, Korean, and Japanese were making Asian period pieces, heavy on martial arts, called "chambara" (also spelled "chanbara").  ("Chambara" is an onomatopoeic word, derived from the the sounds of martial arts weapons banging against each other.)

Chambara started in the early 1950s, to involving masters of kung fu and karate performing superhuman stunts (the kinds of things you see in D&D with high-level monks). It led to the fantastic fight choreography seen in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.. The same kind of fight choreography used by Jackie Chan, to get around, which David Bell acknowledges was a principle inspiration for parkour-- chambara came first then parkour.

If you look at my character sheet (which you approved) I don't have parkour.  I do have Superjump (2), which multiplies my jumping height and distances by 4. That's why I showed my math on what's possible for my guy. He also has Superclimb, so he climbs at the same Move he runs, and can swim 3x the Move of most people.

This is all common chambara stuff. Cinematic? Sure. But you can't seriously talk about realism in a campaign that has functional magic! Especially if everything my character is doing was already approved by you weeks ago! That's just bait and switch!

Re: OOC- 5

Bait and switch? Nah, that's just an old guy realizing how this stuff works in the Players mind, vice his...

I have granted that you can jump 22 yards... 66 feet ...easily twice what an olympic record holder can do... But it is a long low jump.
I will grant you can jump up much higher than the 68 feet a normal High jumper can do... I just said they were differnt efforts and could not be combined.

For Grins and Giggles, let's say Sum tries to jump more than 6' high and travel a longer distance ... That's at least half again as high as a long jumper and about ¾ of what a High Jumper can do. I'll bend and say he can jump about 30' while going 6' above the ground in the middle of that jump. Moving the high point closer makes the Jump shorter and trying to move it out further makes the max height lower.  Can you live with that?

As for Parkour, it predates Motion Pictures, let alone the Martial Arts Movies. David Belle seems to have caused it to prosper in more modern times, But Georges He'bert  and othrs were doing in and teaching it  before and durng WW1. There were peope teach many aspects of this even before this, nothing is new, just re-realized.  Bartitisu is another fun thing to look up, although looking up E. W. Barton-Wright is probably more informative and less enciumbered with others opinions.

I commended Parkour to GURPS Characrer Sheet some years ago ad it is listed as a skill in the Character Sheet  building system.

They attacked us! Is anyone suggesting we use our meager resources to help our tormentors? Goy would be opposed to that. Leave them as they are, suffering from their wounds? Sounds cruel. Let them live so they can attack us again? Sounds suicidal.  Grant them quick, merciful deaths? Better than they deserve but also better than the alternatives. Dismember the corpses to prevent reanimation as zombies or skeletons? Sounds prudent. Leave food for the wildlife of the area? Sounds like an act of kindness. If anything, the party members should be helping Goy!

As a player I'm fine with whatever Sum does. The bard of course will react according to her values.

Sum's methods are typical Sahudese, as they have few wild animals like Bears or wolves. They were eradicated generations ago.
Here is Megalos, Bears, Wolves and Mountain Lions are reasonably common.

Life in Sahud is not as precious as it is in "More Western lands"; So chopping up thieves is not abhorrent at all.  There is also a higher chance of finding a working necromncer in Sahud, although they are unpopular and have governmental disfavor. Still they do exist.

After careful consideration, Goy will not be cleaning or honing anyone else's weapons during his watches unless that person has spares. It occurred to him: what happens if there's an attack and/or he's disabled? That would be a terrible time to wake up without your weapon by your side.

OOC
=============
Goy can't ask this question but the player wants to know: how are the horse and the new guy doing (both with injured legs)?

Terrall is doing very much better this morning, surprisingly so.

The Horse seems to favor the leg some, but isn't slowing you down. and as long as that ointment is rubbed on it's leg, it will heal.
Blythe has taken over the care, as it is her horse. She is leading it and keeping an eye on the leg.

I missed the storm one,  likely thinking he was talking about Blythe's horse.

You also do not have a horse on your character sheet. Nor do you have the sklls to take care of one (Teamster- Packing).

Let's say it ran off during the storm and you now are using Blythe's horse to carry everything, although everyone will need to carry more to lighten the horses load.

But I am merely the story teller, and stories don't always go smoothly or as we'd see them going. Bluedwarf has done me similarly on occasion. But that's no reason, it's just the way I saw things...

I am sorry it makes your chewing gum so sour.  I guess it is my fault for sharing the back ground as to how it happened. I should have just told you "this Happened" and not shared.

Yes, I have been referring to CR as combat reflexes.

I did roll my actions, and was using retreating dodge (message 135) on the one that injured me, circling around the guy I was hitting. This would have turned the dodge you rolled on my behalf into a miss, but I did not specify retreating dodge again in message 137, so I will wear that.

But after the hit, I did post his next actions in message 141, which I am guessing you missed. That is where he critically failed his dodge from goon 1.

Also a seond healing within 24 hours is at -2, and and additional -2 for each attempt there after...
Why is it necessary to specify up front how many FP/HP? A failure just costs 1 FP regardless, doesn't it? I'm guessing there's something I'm missing here but happy to be told.  :)

Roahfustion has suggested a period of a Month to learn skills while listening around for the Count and entertaining.
Roahfustion wants to learn First Aid
If we did this, what would others hope to learn?

Blythe thinks First Aid would be good and wants to improve some combat skills as well. Those would likely not be taught by anyone the Count has working for him.

First aid was a pitch TBH, assuming that Lord Hadrian would have access to the best in the land and all three of us could benefit from having skills in First Aid.
Combat training's good too!

Edit: just checked - I think the bard need to get HT from 11 to 12 to be able to take intensive training. (Might need some CPs for that doh)

OK, Since Blythe wants thesame traning for her shortsword, you both will be looking for an instructor.

Blythe has Veterinary, so First Aid should come a bit easier, and she wants tolearn the basics of the Broadsword, but her shortsword & knife skills should help there too.

Each Character needs to make a learning roll for each skill they ae trying to learn/improve.
Level of success will determine how long it takes. [Not ussing GURPS 200 hours here].

So Name, Skill and what You rolled .

In reply to Roahfustion (msg # 497):

Actually You got about half way to learning First Aid. I'm not going to explain the whole concept as I don't want to type all night, but basically, I used 10 as the average difficulty ... you rolled a 10, which meant one point of advancement, excpt for your Eidetic memory. So that gave you 5 ... 5 more and you earn a level. Harder skills are harder to learn. First Aid is an Easy Skill.

Figure Easy starts at 11, Average at 10, Hard at 9 etc.
You roll and how many points beow the that level is how much you have learned. 10 points gets you the level.

Easy requires an 11 (or lower).
If I understand correctly, GURPS focused on unmodified 3d6 skill checks. All modifiers are to the skill level.

Ypu asked for IQ so presumably it's relvant, so what effect does IQ have on this learning mechanic?
e.g. Does it assume IQ 10, and deviation from this modifies the target number?  IQ 5 means: Easy 11 => 6, and IQ 15 means: Easy 11 => 20 ?

I just couldn't figure it out nor where IQ came in. (And if Identic memory altered the target to roll under or was merely a bonus if passed..
A VH spell, at 8, (if unmodified by IQ or Identic memory), has a 25% chance of success giving one point of success... and, honestly, I can't figure it out.

I can tell you what the bard wants to learn and you just tell me what to roll and the outcome.

But we got rain!  about 2 mm worth ;-)  However that that is the first rain  since late Feb or early March and even then it was a skimpy amount too.  Our Rainy season is setting up and we have hopes of 30 cm or more of rain in the next 2 ½ months.

As for the computer, I am on the old one right now... but I discoverd this one cannot have the OS updated any longer, and web sites are starting to not work. It's a matter of time before this gets cut off from banks and other critical sites, so New computer. Probably cheap by European Standards with VAT, but enough to alter my financial plans for the next few months.  Not like it will affect eating or having a Home or anything, but my savings account may feel forgotten for a bit.   Anyway, likely more than you care to hear, but it will expalin any issues I have over the next day or so.

At the risk of boring you, we are "High Plains", not desert, but rain can be scarece or nonexistant for months at a time depending on El Nino / La Nina ocean upwellings.
So we have five seasons: Winter, Spring, Dry Summer, Wet Summer, and Fall.   We can have 50-75mm of rain during the Fall, Winter & Spring seasons although we can also get much less ... this year we had about 13 mmup until last evening; likely about 15 mm now.
However when we get a strong thunder storm we can have winds well over 100 kph and rain amounts of 50 mm or more in a matter of 15-20 minutes.  We call those storms frog chokers.

Tucson had an underpass that flooded out every monsoon ... you know it's bad when the painted the depth markers on the sides and supports for the overpass. And every year  with out fail ther would be several peope who tried to drive through it ... You'd think the depth marker show 8 feet deep would stop them, but stupid is just unbelievable. We actually have Stupid Motorist Laws for people who drive through flooded washes  ( intermittent streams/rivers than only run in the rainy season), it requires them to pay for the costs of recovering them and their vehicles from said washes.  Still get 6 or 8 a year, unbelievable.

Originally armor, it's now a metal accoutrement to show rank. In this case, it is a 4 or 5 mm thick piece of brass with a seal and words a part of the casting. The chain is also brass with a moderately thick  [1-2 mm] metal formed into a chain. It might well stop a cut or thrust, but wouldn't hold up to a steady beating.

Re: OOC- 5

No, actually just driving my wife to different medical appointments in Tucon. Roughly 80 miles± [130 kilometers] each way through cities, Interstate hiways [Motorways in Britain? Limited access, divided highways with high speed traffic] ] and the big city., plus sitting around waiting on the doctors (a half hour or more for each of them yesterday). The a couple of Tropical downpours on the way home.  I am pretty sure Bluedwarf has them, but serious doubt you have ever had anything like it in Britain. While driving 75 MPH [130-140 kph] the sudden downpour will build up a centimeter or so of water on your windshield and the wipers can't work fast enough to keep the windshield clear. You slow down carefully  and try to keep the car under control, because you are really floating on water too. The best tires can only disperse so much water at one time. Icould tell we no longer had contact with the road several times for a second or two, very unsettling.

Anyway, Not the holidays quite yet, but things are building regardless. Wife will likely have outpatient surgery on her left shoulder around the end of the month, which means I will be using all my domestic talents, as she will not be able to lift hat arm or carry any weight for 6 weeks.

Absolutely so... The US would quit moving at the prices for fuel in Britain.
Distances here (and in Oz) are so much greater.
I remember a German couple about twenty years ago who were agast at the distances they had to travel and the vast empty spaces between some of them. They had rented a car to tour the West with limited comprehenstion of the distances involved. It's the old "but it was only a centimeter or two on the map"  syndrome.

FWIW to you - I got an add from Gaming Ballistic [ bought something once, so every new thing gets a message].

Anyway, the Shields thing looks pretty good to me, the grappling booklet is more ho-hum, but grappling isn't my bag anyway.

"Gaming Ballistic is pleased to announce a new release for the Dungeon Fantasy RPG.

Shields Up! https://gaming-ballistic.mysho...riant=43465548529919

Shields Up! expands on defensive shield use and also details the often-neglected roles of shields as offensive weapons and active tools of engagement."

cost is $10.95  for the Shields book via PDF and the  Grappling booklet is $3.99 ... came out to $14.98 for me.

Torso (50%), Arms (15%) is fine.
I'm assiming that Thighs & Knees are half of legs (30% x 0.5 = 15%) and and that Torso includes Vitals  + Groin.
Total 80%

So you get to choose between:

a) Fortify +2DR, Cost 200 x0.8 =160, (Magic p66) which would leave you with $110 = 7 silver schillings & 5 coppers

OR

b) Penetrating Weapon (2), cost 250, (Magic p63) which would leave you with $20 = 1 silver schilling & 5 coppers.

So, which does Troesl want?

Troel's Armor would cost 200 per item. I will wave that and say all his armor is one item, but not the buckler.

Roahfustion's armor would not get the x.50 unless I misunderstand the rules.
It seems to be written per item, not per body coverage.

It was, I believe, originally a unit of length, when wood was cut to one foot lengths, or thereabouts, and piled up to a certain height (4 ft, I believe). One cord was 8 ft of this stack, as 1 cord was used to tie it together.

Re: OOC- 5

A cord of wood
The cord is a unit of measure of dry volume used to measure firewood and pulpwood in the United States and Canada.
A cord is the amount of wood that, when "racked and well stowed" (arranged so pieces are aligned, parallel, touching and compact), occupies a volume of 128 cubic feet (3.62 m3).[1] This corresponds to a well-stacked woodpile 4 feet (122 cm) high, 8 feet (244 cm) wide, and 4 feet (122 cm) deep; or any other arrangement of linear measurements that yields the same volume.
The name cord probably comes from the use of a cord or string to measure it.[2]
The cord-foot was a US unit of volume for stacked firewood, four feet long, four feet wide and one foot high—equal to one eighth of a cord.[3] Symbol for the unit was cd-ft.[4]

In Canada, the cord is legally defined by Measurement Canada. The cord is one of three legal standards for the sale of firewood in Canada: stacked cubic metre (or stere), cubic foot, and cord. The preferred unit of measurement for firewood is the stacked cubic metre.[5]

In the United States, the cord is defined by statute in most states. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology Handbook 130, section 2.4.1.2,[6] defines a cord and provides uniform regulations for the sale of fireplace and stove wood. In the metric system, wood is usually measured in steres and cubic metres: 1 stere = 1 m3 ≈ 0.276 cords.

So +2 DR, and I have no cash?

Roahfustion From OOC #613:
Torso (50%), Arms (15%) is fine.
I'm assuming that Thighs & Knees are half of legs (30% x 0.5 = 15%) and and that Torso includes Vitals  + Groin.
Total 80%

So you get to choose between:

a) Fortify +2DR, Cost 200 x0.8 =160, (Magic p66) which would leave you with $110 = 7 silver schillings & 5 coppers...

If you want the weght reduced by 25% would could also afford Lighten 1, costing a further $100 x0.8 /15 = 5 schillings & 5 coppers, so you'd still have 2 schillings in your pocket.

You do, and also get a bunch of assistance when you are seen fromthe door, both human and dwarf come and help. Gorin is placed on a table where he can be worked on and Physicians have been summoned to assist the wounded. A couple of the attackers are on tables too.

Gorin's bags wee recovered and are placed by his table ... you suspect that they have been gone through.

You are all given small beer and food to aid your recovery.. A small group of city guard are there talking with the Dwarves and others. You'll likely be next ...

b) So what country are we in? What is the name of the King?

No, The Baron of Marshall is fighting against the King here in Caithness. The King is Conall VI.
Megalos is the much larger country to the East, which Caithness revolted in and separated itself from a few hundred years ago.
Tacitus is the Barony to the west of Mershall, which is stoutly supporting the king.
