Looking For Talent

Becka was getting tired, she had been walking for hours and  wanted to rest, the little villages here were not far apart, but none had an inn so far.  She had come upon a bigger farm house with a barn and barn yard fenced in, obviously better of than many, so she decided to see if they could provide hospitality.
She entered the yard and a Dog came out barking, but she smiled and greeted it, bringing it to a stop with its head cocked, as if something didn't make sense.  She knocked and when a drawn woman answered asked if they could put up a tired traveler.
The Lady shook her head .. I am sorry, my son has been seriously hurt and we have our hands full as we wait for Old Artimus to come and aid us.
Becka smiled, perhaps I am guided here by God, I can hopefully provide aid as might Artimis and I am here.
The old woman's face hardened as she started to refuse, but Becka had already reached in her pouch and pulled out some small leaves... You must be very stressed, let me ease your aches And she touched the woman while crushing the leaves between her fingers... The woman uttered a No, we have known Arti ... sigh ... oh my ... thank You! perhaps you can help whilst we wait.
She opened the door and let Becka in, guiding her to a room in the back, about 5 paces square with a good sized 4 post bed near a window. In the bed was a young man, pale and breathing shallowly. His left arm was crudely splinted and the efforts to stop the blood ozing through the torn skin was obviously not working. A very worried man sat and held the young mans right hand.
Becka touched the young mans neck gently with two fingers, her face serious. Then she put her pouch down and opened it, removing more Willow Leaves, Witch Hazel and a clove of Garlic, these she placed in a small mortar and ground them to a paste with her pestle. She rubbed a small amount on the young mans head and carefully passed the remaining paste in the mortar over the young mans arm as she muttered words and made signs.  The blood stopped leaking and the young mans breathing steadied and became slightly deeper.

He has lost much blood, Hopefully Artimis has talents beyond mine ... It was sometime later when a sharp knocking came loudly from the door. The woman hastened to the door and ushered a very old man who moved with obvious discomfort. He moved up beside Becka and took the mortar and smelled it, then nodded  Good you started, he will need much help, you will aid me?
Becka nodded, he had no clue how powerful this man was, but he obviously knew far more than she.
Over the next hour the man mixed mixed herbs and wine to add to those Becka had provided. Then he removed the splints and carefullt moved the mans arm before resplinting it ... By The Grace of The God and Goddess it was only snapped and nay crushed or we would ta ha removed it ... a most unpleasant task.
He motioned for Becka to put away her herbs and did the same. Lealla, we can nay do more, but wi' Their Grace he'll come aroun' maybe tomorra ... when he is awake , give him warm meat broth, I'll be back ta check on 'im before sun down. Young Lady, aid me ta home an I'll see ta ya dinner and a safe place ta sleep
And thus Becka rested in Artemis' cottage and learned much of the area .

Artimis was very slow but they made the trip back to his cottage at his speed. It turned out to be a rather large and well built building with several rooms. A large central fire place warmed all the rooms.
Artimis waved her to a chair. You can have that room as yours, but first let me ask what you know and what are you doing here? What followed was a back and forth interview where they compared skills, spells and knowledge. Artimis was surprised they had sent a small blonde women to create a new coven in the area, but promised to be supportive, as it would ease his workload immensely.
Becka was delighted that he could assist her in growing her skills and spells. She quickly began to take his calls if they weren't too serious.
Artimis shared that his house was reasonably safe, as anytime the church or mages launched a clean up the dangerous magic users sweep, the local populace all but went into revolt, which quickly brought the Nobility into the mix, they were far more pragmatic, since any sort of stoppage of work quickly meant lost taxes.  Both church and Mage Guild learned not to push in certain places, although they pushed in others and made much of finding a few pitiful practitioners.
Becka was safe under his shadow and worked hard to become known to the locals, so that shadow remained.

Looking For Talent

After about six weeks, Becka started looking for possible talent in the little villages and farms around Artimis's cottage just north of Stubble.
She walked to Snurgle and Woodmuth the first day.

OOC - Stubble to Snurgle is about 5 Kilometers or 3 miles.

Near Woodmuth she felt a difference, the fields were greener than else where and were were charms about. She asked a few questions before finding finding Letuel's cabin. Here she knew was a Witch's cabin, so she approach down the path and made herself known. Letuel was a very old man, obviously talented but tired. She identified her self and said she was looking for talented people to bring into the fold and planned to create a coven for support. Letuel looked at her for a while before nodding,  Moshennik, come meet this lady. She will help you learn skills like mine and I'll help.

The Old man Nods and comes out to sit by the fire.

A Bit early for dinner, but I can adjust as needed ... nice of you to do this.

Not a Problem, what have you been able to teach Moss so far?

Therein ensues a long conversation as Leteul tells them he needs to retire soon and Moss is in no way ready to take on the needs of the locals.  Becka Nods as says she will stay near and fill the need so Leteul can retire with a clean conscience.

During this the rabbit, some ham, cheese and wine is consumed by all.

Becka locates a deserted cabin near the town of Woodmuth and seems to have it fixed up in no time. Quite soon it is as nice as Leteul's with a big garden and healthy plants all around. She starts teach Moss plants, adding to what he knows and teaching him new uses for them as well as new plants. She teaches a lot and then asks questions days later to check and see if he remembered. After about 5 weeks she has him move to her cabin and leave Leteul in peace.  She provides Moss a place in the loft with a straw mattress and sheets. He also gets to eat more than he did at home... well more often, but also smaller meals. He seldom finds himself hungry though and the teaching continues at a fast pace.
One Evening she calls Moss back down from his Loft and confronts him ... I know you are peeking at me when I change clothes and bathe, why?

You may pick out 4 spells from the Level one and level 0 spells, emphasis on healing and plant spells.

OK, Let's assume that you have spent a LOng time with Becca, say closing in on two years and you know 20 spells from the 0 and 1st level spells. Remember the emphasis is on spells that help others, but some to help you not get caught.
You will also learn Both Level 1 Rituals and have exchanged the BFF Ritual with Becca.
I will assume that she has also taught you a good bit after hours between the sheets, so you are BFFs.

Let me see the list ... Becka may make some minor alterations before you go through the Blessed Wanna Be Ritual and start your own "Stead".  You have met Becka's sponsor once or twice and she along with some Witches you don't know will attend your ritual.

Becka helps you move your things up there with a cart .. sort of over kill given how much you don't own. But you are able to find a run down cabin. It's almost as if Becka knew it was there. You start looking at what it would take to fix it up, when a wood cutter shows up, I'd nay be a movin' in there, belonged ta a witch and she died there ... the she just disappeared.

Becca waves Thanks be to you, but if she has passed on, she'll be no problem to the lad.

She speak more softly to you We did come and bury her, gave her the rights. She helped them a bunch, but they feared her.

The Cabin has sound bones, so to speak, but needs a good bit of repair to be warm and dry. On the other hand you find an old iron cauldron, a kettle and various tools.

We Buried her Athame with her, would do you little good, you'll need to make your own. But many of her other tools we buried in the cabin or around beside the chimney, so you should dig them up and use them. That was her garden, it need a lot of work, but many of the plants you'll need are already growing there. I'll help today, but must return to my cabin tomorrow.  We'll camp out side tonight.

As for your night time issues, we'll visit a couple times a month at first, but I suspect there will be one or two girls around, just be careful as they can cause issues if someone things it's his girl/daughter or whatever.

Town is really just a gathering of homes with a single merchant who provides a store, ale house and common meeting area.
There are 24 houses here, many small, although each has a garden plot of about an acre/0.40 hectares.

The merchant is the accepted village headman.
There are 6 young women between 15 and 20, but only 3 boys in that age group, not counting you.
There is also one widow of 24 with 2 small children who struggles to survive. Actually a fairly comely woman at that, but dirt poor.

All that will take time.
Getting rid of pesky rabbits is popular, particularly with those you leave them with.
Fox pelts can be valuable, and saving chickens is also a good thing.

The merchant is glad for you to bring him herbs and such to sell, as well as pelts That the widow can tan for him for food or whatever.  He pays her fairly, but not at all generously.  The woman's husband had been a forester until a tree they were cutting fell all wrong. It was quick for him, but she and her kids suffer now because money is hard to come by and she has to work very hard to make it. The town pities her, but doesn't do anything to assist her.

The girls all talk with you, and so do their Fathers, who order you away, as you have not shown a trade.

The priest is not overly friendly, although he welcomes you and asks what you do... He also watches who puts how much in the alms plate very carefully and treats the generous with a more effusive manner. He has no time for the Widow who can't afford to provide alms.
How much, if anything do you contribute?

The Hunter story seems to be accepted ... two fox pelts net you 16 copper ($16) ...so 4 in the offering plate is well received, few other's put more because few can afford to. Your best guess is the Priest leaves with about $31.

The Widow is quite thankful for your help, but also very careful and reserved; you have been here long enough to know the married Merchant has been hitting on her pretty hard and the Priest wanted to stay in her cabin while he was here, but she refused. The Town has noticed but is a little divided, the women very irritated and many of the older men shrugging and saying it's how it is, some woman will die in childbirth and her husband will marry her most likely, so he has someone to cook, clean raise the kids and keep his bed warm.

Hunting is OK and you bring in quite a few rabbits, some grouse and portions of a recently dead deer "You found".

Becka swings through to check on you, she is not pleased about how the widow is being treated and suggests maybe you can influence things.  She also ruins your sleep for much of the night she spends with you ... seems like you were her only release for sometime.

It's a 'Roman Catholic' world around here. Two wives would be  a heresy / a major sin etc.

Becka agrees that you probably shouldn't get too involved with this woman, but that you use your talents to get the woman to come to her aid. But if she needs close friend and finds you acceptable, go for it, so long as she knows you will not be a marriageable lay.

You quickly get a reputation as socially clumsy but well intentioned. The older women put up with you and make some small efforts to help the woman. The older women laugh at your awkwardness, the younger girls go hot and cold, depending on whose around and who is trying to influence who.
The older women are more interesting in many ways, but all are spoken for.

One of the wood cutters manages to run a knife through his right hand between the Metacarpals for the middle and ring fingers. It's actually a fairly clean cut, although bloody and with several of his buddies offering all sorts of advice, some good, some bad as he staggers into the village. You are there and close by.

OK, Need a roll for the 1st aid and for the spell ...

Kadulf does not seem to have any children, his wife is in her late twenties you'd guess and is certainly attractive; Kadulf is a few years older.
His wife knows he is pestering this woman and is trying to interrupt as often as she can, which is causing Kadulf to order her to stay away.  Male dominated society here, so his wife is out on the thin ice.

A few women try to help, but no men get involved.

This sounds like a job for the priest to deal with, not for the new Hunter kid. Does Mossy get a chance to privately voice his concern? Perhaps under the guise of confession?

No, The 13 succeeds, JUST! .. so which spell was it? Clean or Heal?

The priest hears your concern and suggests it is not your place to confess Kadulf's flaws.
You later learn that one of the other women had to "rescue" the widow from the priests clutches, as he had his hand in the front of her bodice and was holding her hands as he did it. The Priest was furious at the women butting into her confession. The woman had heard the widow's cries and appeals for him to stop.

With regard to the woman, Mossy would respond to feeling helpless but wanting to protect the widows, like scripture said they should.

Who are the men of the community that actually have a sense of Justice?  If the preist is not willing to help, perhaps let that be well known. If, on the other hand, he can be convinced to be a good guy, all the better.

The priest is a self serving jerk
Kadulf is just a fairly decent guy with a failing, in that he thinks he has this widow in a spot where she can't say no.

There is a very strong inclination to not get involved, especially as it may look like they too are trying to take advantage of her.
Thus the women are a bit more able to work on her behalf.

The Merchant wants in her panties (or whatever she is wearing) ... You are not going to talk to him, as he is your elder and a successful member of the community.

You spell works very well and is unnoticed, as the fellow isn't the brightest light and is in a LOT of discomfort. The various leaves and the salve you use are assumed to be the reason for the improvement.  Becka will counsel you on her next visit to clean the wound before healing it. She has a male visitor it seems and you go without, as she doesn't spend the night.

Well te Priest only comes every other week. CHARM PERSON  would make Kadulf do as you say until sunrise the next day ... 3 FP  shouldn't be too tough to matter.

You on the other hand, are getting very desirous of some action ... young men are generally always interested.  Options are: Take a chance on some girl, see if the widow is any more receptive of your advances or see if Kadulf's wife, Lucile, is interested in getting even with him for his behavior. Or you could take the day to see if Becka is free and so inclined ... the last option is just to carry on with out relief.
Each has potential undesirable effects. You do have spells that would help, but in several cases would also violate the Witches oath to help people and try to do no harm to the honest and upright.

Taking a chance on some girl is probably the best option, as the widow will start to feel used by everyone and taking the Merchants wife, if she is willing, would morally make me no better than him, but also a hypocrite into the bargain. Becka is moving on, so it is time to do likewise.

Depends on what he does while charmed...  the girls who think they are cute are mostly a bit silly and want to play mind games.. There are two others, one is obviously slow, but a hard worker, the other is a bit skinny and  struggling with acne. It’s not really bad, but what girl want a big red plook on her cheek or nose? You also note that she helps her mother with common kitchen herbs and one or two teas that are supposed to ease pain or relax tired muscles.

The daughter tries to leave if you show up ... Mom however is very happy withn your efforts. There is no Father, but her brother acts as head of things and her house adjoins his families.

With in two weeks Moshie is aware that Mom is getting very relaxed around him, bending forward with just a shift, that is loose and open so he can see past her navel. She all but openly invites him to touch and play. She does wait until her daughter leaves, but that's easy as Roenna is unwilling to be near Moshie.

Sometime later you come upon Roenna by the stream and alone, she stands and keeps her distance but does not leave. "What is it you want of us?

Roenna shrugs, I was kinda looking forward to us getting to know each other when Mom got in the middle. Now I think she is ready to marry me off to you so she can come live with us ... I am not at all sure about any of that. I imagine you are aware that she wants you between the sheets. She misses my Dad a lot and the attentions he paid her there.  I don't guess you know that you live in my Dad's house now? He was a ...um don't know the word, but he could heal, make all sorts of teas, herb poultices, things that smoked or steamed and made you better and could do some spells too. I don't know how much I can add. He did potions, balms and grew many of his herbs, as do you it seems. But he could do some magic, which he kept a secret. He loved my Mother but her brother refused to allow her to marry him. Still they had me and I know they spent a lot of time in bed together, Dad said it was a gift of God that I would get to know as I grew older, he said sharing the gift was not a sin. He shared it with other women who came, I think they were like him and could do magic and stuff. Mom wasn't very happy about his sharing and refused to share herself with anyone. I wonder why she suddenly is so ready to share herself with you. I think I too would have some issues with the idea of sharing myself with more than one man, but I have been told over and over that men will share themselves with several women.

She shakes her head I cannot say I understand, but I am pretty sure that if you and I were to get together, you'd best plan on being with my Mother too.

She pauses for a moment then asks Do You think I could learn to do magic?  Do you even know what it takes?

She nods I do understand and agree with your thinking. But I do think I know my mother, if you teach me magic, she will want you to teach her as well.  Dad said she did not have the gift, but she has never accepted that. She is very good with herbs and various mixes and methods of using them. She would be an asset to a mutual business, but she will want your attentions, there is no question in my mind. She also would be happy to get out from under her brother's thumb. Moving in with me and my man would be something he could not prevent without drawing a lot of questions from the village. Of course, if Mother became pregnant, that might sway things the other way. And first, you and I need to see if we would be happy working together, long before we cement a relationship with our bodies.

Working with Roenna is rather more fun although it does affect your hunting... Traps however are effective.
You also do better at finding various plants and things working together than either of you had alone.
Tabitha is a little miffed and apparently has a talk with her daughter one evening ... you hear about it the following day.
Tabitha wants some attention too and if she doesn't suit you, neither will her daughter.
You are discussing this when Becka shows up... smiling, she apologizes for butting in, but couldn't help but over hearing the issue.

Roenna is obviously bothered by your familiarity with Becka; expect to explain later.
Becka however is quite intrigued by Roenna and asks who her family is.
Once that is established, she seems even more interested and ask Roenna if she will do some things for her.
You Immediately know that Becka is checking her for the gift and you know when she shows it.
Roenna is not at all pleased that Becka plans to stay the night, until Becka suggests she stay the night too, and she can sleep with you so she knows there is no hanky-panky going on. Roenna, handed the hot potato, mutters something about her Mother killing her if she did.
Becka smiles and replies that she won't at all, but that Roenna is going to have to understand the teachings of the Goddess, she suggest that all of you have supper here this night, Tabitha included.  Becka is willing to cook whatever you have.

Roenna is expected to come to the Coven meet.

She appreciates your patience and your teachings , you may pick 2 level 0 spells and teach them. I'll roll for her success at them.

The witch will also have a book to begin her own Book of Shadows, and a non-magical, non-consecrated athame, a blunt, ceremonial dagger which serves as a focus  for witches, (much like a wand or staff, but never wver used as a weapon or reach extender). These may be adjusted according to the witch’s tradition or coven.

More detailed explanation: Athamé
The Athamé (pronounced ah-thah-may) is a magical knife that is commonly used in witchcraft. It is never used for cutting or combat purposes, or for any purposes outside the coven or spell- work. The Athamé is used in ritual to direct energy and is an instrument of power and manipulation. The blade is often dull and double-edged and the handle is black or some other dark color to absorb power. They are very fine quality and normally have to be specially made. Normal or magical knives, daggers or swords created for combat cannot be used.
Each witch will have her own Athamé for ceremonial purposes. The knife will have the witch’s personal symbol of power and that of the coven somewhere on the handle.
A witch becomes very connected to her Athamé. Since Athamés are used in all of the witch’s mundane and magical rituals, it begins to absorb a bit of magical energy. The witch can always locate her Athamé as if it had a permanent Locate Object spell cast on it. A witch without her Athamé may not be able to cast some spells. Of course, the witch may not want to cast any spells without her Athamé. Also due to its magical focusing power, the Athamé cannot rust and makes saves as if it were a +1 dagger of fine quality.
The Athamé is the tool of the East and is associated with the element of Air. In some traditions it is the tool of Fire. The Athamé is also phallic in nature and is therefore a masculine tool and linked to the God.
Some witches have taken to using a Boline, or a white knife for practical purposes. It is sharp and is used as a normal knife or dagger. It is also used in rituals, but it is keep separate from the Athamé. Losing one’s Boline is an inconvenience, but not worrisome to the witch.

That and a spell book are normal, IIRC Becka gave you a book to record your spells and taught you a form of glyphs to use to record them.

The Athame always has a dark wood or bone handle, The Boline or "white knife" has a light or white wood/bone handle.
Becka would have an Athame, but you need to have one made or get the parts and make it yourself.  The more you do, the more it is "Yours".
A bought blade will become yours over time as you use it, but if you build it, make the handle, polish the blade, it becomes yours faster.
In time, it adds to your magical abilities.  Roenna will need one too and a book. These are things you don't share.

Carpentry for the Handle (or sculpting?)
Smith for the blade? But without the tools?? Or can we make a stone blade? (Sculpting again!)

You could make a stone blade, but it would be fragile. The local smith can provide two blade blanks  for $35 each or say 6 or 7 rabbits over the next few months (say one a week).

Wood is readily available, but a correct wood not so much, still the amount needed for knife handles is what is often seen as discard, so  you should be able to acquire that.  Give me a roll for each of you to see what you can find. You both will also need to work on the blades to shape them and mark them.  Mend would allow you to put wood chips back together for the handle and leather could be bound around the wood as a grip.

I seem to have missed this one!

Will go for the steel ones, Do we roll naturalist to find the wood, or scrounging?

Not to be mean, but this has become a piece of string for me to push ...  wulfe won't do a witch and has asked me to keep theTravesty & Response game background alive. ... so I did that ... now he wants to keep wulfe and I said no... so it too may not come to pass, but you are welcome to join if you'd like... i kept a spot for you, if you want.

We can retry witches in a bit if you are still interested and start with Moshennik as a developed Character.

Happy to fit in in any way, but not sure where you are taking this. Back to the old thread?

In reply to Master of Fates (msg # 108):

That is confusing, as Moshe is a magic user already. No mages...what type of person? Leader? Thief? Cleric?

Check that, I just read the thread. Clearly not someone who can create food...nor someone so charismatic.

I apologize, Yesterday was a long difficult day involving putting my brother into hospice care.

Basically just some sort of adventurer who is down on his luck.
