Re: Back to Reality?
Working carefully, Luke finds that, as he feared, the bullet had indeed struck and lodged in April's femur, at the head, below the hip joint. Fortunately her transformation back to her mortal seeming had stretched the entry wound, and enlarged it, as Luke had also thought. It takes considerable patience and steady hands, to dislodge the metal pellet from the bone, without doing further damage, but with diligence and skill he finally removes it and sews the wound closed with the thin silver thread he is provided. Although there will undoubtedly be a scar, with careful stitching it would fade somewhat.
April was uncommonly brave, biting down hard on the stick and fighting back the screams of agony until she finally passed out when she saw the bullet come out of her leg. Rowan speaks soothingly to her and holds her head gently, as well as assisting Luke with his efforts in every way she can. She sighs with relief once Luke has finished the procedure and bandaged the wound. The rest of the changeling childer watch sadly, faces clouded with worry. When Rowan turns around to face them she manages a smile and addresses them:
"Its going to be alright, we will tend to April and she will be okay, but she'll need her rest for awhile, so we are going to leave her alone for a little. Go and play, and thank the Goddess it was not you that was hurt. The humans are dangerous and I want you to stay away from them from now on! These are our friends, Luke, Malcolm, Rhic, Moon Child, and Alex. They will help me make the humans understand so we can live in peace here. Go play now, and stay close to the protection of the Dreaming Tree and out of the workers sight; I mean it! Go now, SHOO!"
She watches as the little ones disperse, many still looking sad and confused, then turns around to the group, her shoulders sagging, as if all their sadness was hers alone to bear. "April will be alright in time won't she Luke? I am grateful for your help, I have little skill with those kinds of wounds. I truly wish I did not have to ask more of you, but you know that I do. But first, you must all be hungry and thirsty, and it is improper of me not to offer you something. Even in difficult times, we must not forget what is right."
She asks Dirk and Scruff and a few of the older Kithain still present to find some refreshment for their guests, and they quickly rush off, seeming to be glad to have something to do. Dirk shakes his head before he goes. "You're using that fancy shmancy talk again, Rowan...sheesh." She gives him a stern look and he shrugs and runs off with a final "whatever."
Eventually a large platter is brought filled with melon slices, big juicy grapes, chunks of cheddar, small wheat crackers, a multitude of nuts, strawberries, pears, dark raspberries, and several kinds of cookies, including short bread and peanut butter. They also bring a big tall pitcher filled with a red juice which they proudly announce is pomegranate punch. Dirk and Scruff sit down on the tree stump stools, while benches are brought over for the visitors. Rowan sits on a wooden chair decorated with plastic hearts and stars, and butterfly shaped dried pasta. She looks, for a moment, very tired.
"When you are ready, I will make you a doorway to bring you as close to the Old Man's Cabin, as I can, if that is where you wish to go. Malcolm I pray your call will work, and Moon Child, I ask you once more to find the Spirit Mask of Tecumseh for us, so we can make with the Nunnehi. Your horse somehow followed you here, he is quite a faithful companion to be sure. I have asked Thomas to bring him into the root cellar of the Freehold. Animals are seldom fooled by illusions and he would likely have found it on his own eventually. When you are ready, he may of course accompany you home if you wish..."
They are interrupted by a cat and a blackbird, who swiftly resume the shape of two teen aged looking changelings; a girl and a boy. They blink as they see the strangers, but hesitate only a moment deciding that they seem to be friendly. Facing Rowan directly, the girl speaks up first, her voice trembling:
"The Company has sent some more security guards, a dozen big ugly looking guys. They scared the boss lady there, heck they even scare Starling," she says, to which the dark haired boy shakes his head. "For the tenth time, I didn't say they scared me Kat, I just said they looked dangerous alright? Looks the the big bosses didn't like how things were going, I heard the boss arguing with them on the phone. They fired the old security guy. I don't think these guys are going to be as easy to fool."
