D&D: The Road

It has taken some time earning the trust of the people of Sourville, but Meiou just finished routing out a villain that the local law enforcement had been unable to track down thus far. The villain had been robbing townsfolk of vital things just to watch them suffer. Although the law enforcement isn't happy about being upstaged by a rabbit, they aren't about to diss the guy for a job well down.

Still... it wasn't just the fact that he wasn't human that had the townsfolk slow to trust Meiou. It was also the fact he had a frost giant companion following him around. Sure, the giant is just a tot, but at seven-and-a-half feet tall, the girl known as Igatho was rather intimidating even if she's a child.

Igatho is exiting the constabulary with Meiou, sucking on her thumb. She pops her thumb out of her mouth to say, "I'm hungry."

The rabbitfolk stretched out he had tried on several attempts to get the local law enforcement's blessing and help but because he was a rabbitfolk and had the frost giant toddler with him they hadn't really trusted him. Though with abit of work playing up being one of the local tavernkeeps new hires he had gotten them relaxed enough with some drinks to spill what info they had on the case which had allowed him to really start the long and arduous task of getting the villain . Now that it was all over he looked up at his partner who had said she was hungry as his own stomach growled "Yeah it has been awhile of not having real food. Rations can only hold you over so long. Let me see if the tavern might have some meals i can get us. "

Igatho enters the tavern with Meiou, holding onto his hand with her left hand while her right hand is busy being near her mouth. When Meiou finds a table, Igatho sits with him, putting a pair of chairs together to fit her oversized butt. They creak and buck from the baby who weighs more than a piano. (Thankfully, two chairs can handle that much weight)

The waitress is the standard buxom human lady in her mid-30's who comes over and asks, "What can I get for you two?"

"Food!" Igatho answers. Then as if she had a great idea, smiles and asks, "...ice cream?"

The waitress says, "We do have ice cream..." she glances at Meiou. "But I'll let your friend here figure out what you should eat before the ice cream."

He honestly was just glad they were sturdy enough for her. He had been thinking of commissioning someone for a proper chair for her and getting a bag of holding to keep it in.
He looked up at the waitress and smiled then chuckled hearing igatho " Meal first then ice cream. Now how bout a big bowl of stew? "

Igatho quickly says, "Cold stew!"

The waitress nods. "Stew it is." she gets what kind of stew the two would like and heads off to get the order made.

Igatho looks at Meiou, smiles wide, and pat pats the table to begin a beat. "We will.. we will.. eat stew!"

He chuckles as igatho starts up the beat and song. He was fairly sure some bard had taught it to her.

Ben would just be another incredibly generic human in traveler's robes, if not for the fabulous bird snake riding his shoulder like a parrot.

Though he is fairly certain that the oversized baby/undersized bunny combo he sees on entering the tavern is a bit more outlandish... Or would be if his familiar wasn't far more socially forward than Ben himself was.

Preston flappa flaps to the far side of Meiou and Igatho's table and starts flopping his wings onto the table in time with the baby's fists.

Ben manages to avoid rolling his eyes, but it is a close thing. "Behold, the flying snake, majestic for about five whole seconds."  "HissSQUAWK!"

A doppelganger bard, drawn to the music, also approaches.  He smiles and plays along with the beat on his clockwork hurdy gurdy.

"Majestic indeed.  I can imagine primitive cultures building enormous temples to such an exotic creature.

"But lo!  Is this a young frost giant I behold?  And musically talented at that!  And such a generous companion.  Might this humble bard have the honor of joining you for the repast?"

Jack would love to have been Ben's traveling companion from the last town he visited, assuming his player is OK with it.

Igatho giggles happily at the sight of the majestic bird playing along. "Birdy!" she squeals happily. Ben's comment is not lost on Igatho, though, and she says, "Flying Snake Birdy! Hissquawk!" Preston's comment wasn't lost on her either.

And then seeing Jack, she says, "Yeah! I'm a frost giant, just like you said. My name is Igatho."

She then points at Meiou. "He's my bunny. I love him. His name's Meiou."

All very vital data as far as Igatho's concerned.

Igatho points at Preston. "Extotic! Magic stick!"

Meiou watches as these folk gather around their table.
Well least its a better gathering than when they first did this upon coming to the village.
They'd been so uneasy a few had tried to get them to leave. Needless to say Meiou broke some furniture and the spirits of those that tried to hurt his frost giant companion.
Not that she really needed his protection she could take care of herself but he didn't like the idea of someone trying to hurt a child even if they were a frost giant.

"Seems we made some new friends here. Now I wouldnt really say im your bunny but i am your bunny friend. As she said I'm Meiou or least thats what every keeps telling me."

Until proven otherwise, Ben's player is going to imagine it was more along the lines of 'piano pain' rather than 'bar stool bash' for Meiou's furniture based intimidation.

"Well I am Ben, and this is Jack the bard who thinks hanging out with me is a good career move for reasons I have yet to determine.  Be sure to let us know if you prefer being called something other than Meiou."

He looks back over to the Big Baby, commenting "I've heard of snake related stick spells before, but Preston has nothing to do with them." you don't even need an implement to cast find familiar either, so there are multiple nerd layers of a lack of sticks to snakes.

Jack sits next to Igatho, and extends a pair of bunny ears up from his head.  "Can I be your bunny friend, too?"

He considers Meiou and answers, "Thank you for the warm welcome.  A most interesting introduction.  Is there some intriguing reason for saying..."

He holds up air-quotes, and almost perfectly imitates Meiou's voice saying, "...That's what everyone keeps telling me?"

"...such as a case of mistaken identity?  'Everyone has a look-alike,' as the saying goes."

To Meiou's attempt to correct Igatho, she says, "MY bunny!" and goes to hug him as if he was a doll someone was trying to take from her.

When Jack grows bunny ears, Igatho widens her eyes in surprise. Never in her life has she seen someone just grow a pair of bunny ears. Nevermind her life has thus far been a short one. With one hand, she grabs the ears and tugs (gently) on them to make sure they are attached. In an almost-whispering tone, Igatho says, "Woooow..."

Her other hand is still holding Meiou close to her. She retracts the hand from Jack and gets to petting Meiou and scritching his ears.

To Ben she says, "But you said he was a magic stick snake!"

Jack is very glad he didn't have to lose an ear to a curious child.  But since his bunny ear trick is more distracting for Igatho than endearing him to her, he returns to his usual look.

"I've heard that powerful clerics can regrow a missing limb.  Perhaps that same holy magic can restore missing memories.  If not that, there's always gambling with the Wish spell.  If you can find a mage willing to cast it for you."

Jack half suspects that Igatho is feigning confusion to toy with Ben, so he deliberately doesn't clarify any more than what Ben already has lest he interfere with her game.  "Bored?  Doesn't happen to me often.  This world is so full of interesting things to discover, I doubt I'd have even scratched the surface if I'd lived a thousand years."

He plays "The Road Goes Ever On," with his hurdy gurdy.

Igatho responds to Meiou's request, "Tay." and puts him down. It wasn't lost on her that Meiou stood up for her that one time. If anything, it's all the more impressive that a little bunny would stand up for her.

But it's Igatho. She loved the breaking of things just as much.

Igatho says, "I like Meiou's name." and lets out little cat mews.

She looks at Jack, "You sounded like Meiou! Can you do my voice too?"

Igatho goes to pet Preston. "Hissquawk!"

The rabbitfolk settles back into his seat as Igatho talks to one of the others and their pet/familiar. He idly played with a ring he wore around his neck. He didn't quite understand why he was so fascinated with it . it was just a simple ring but it looked and felt familiar enough he had robbed the sleazy merchant who had it. It just relaxed him for some reason as if it told him everything was ok. To anyone watching him he was just staring off into space playing with the ring not really paying attention to anything else.

"Against my greatest hopes and expectations, Jack. Though this is  much prefferable sort of avoiding boredom to the usual.  Highly aggressive Elk, not so much."

Preston flappa flaps happily at the ice giant baby bird(?) petting him.

"Preston is perfectly safe to pet, for as a familiar he can't even bite people.  Not that Preston would bite you anyways. But I have found even the sort of person who thinks deadly birds of prey are safe pets for children, are suddenly worried if it is a snake with wings."

Is it any wonder Ben is self taught instead of having gone to some form of magical school?  He does notice the Rabbit fidgeting, but decides to bet on Jack being the one to ask someone they just met very loudly about their valuables.

Apparently Ben's explanation was sufficient for clever Igatho.  And she's very obedient.  And makes a very good point about Meiou's name.  Jack is impressed!

"I like..."   "Ahem.  I like Mieu's name too.  Mew!"

Jack smiles at the tot.  "Yes I can.  'Hissquawk!  This magestic avian reptile is indigenous to the Farlong region of Avistan.  Known for it's distinctive call, naturalists speculate that much is communicated through nuanced tonal changes imperceptible to most listeners.'"

Jack considers Ben's thoughts on where Elk rate compared to bird snakes in the sliding scale of boredom banishers.  "Most certainly preferable!  I take it, then, that you've had a bad experience with Elk?

"I think most races consider snakes on the more dangerous end of the animal kingdom on a purely instinctual level.  Snakes, though they are much smaller creatures, aren't always wise enough to stay far away from civilization, and the nicer ones are lumped together with the venomous types, so I imagine that's how the collective memory of the civilized races wound up with such a strong anti-snake instinct.  And mash-up animals, like the chimera, tend to be the stuff of scary legends, so I'm not too surprised that they would have irrational fears of what I consider a cute little critter."

"Tend to be" was deliberate.  Jack is aware that if you magic-glue giant dove wings onto a horse's back, that's perfectly fine.

His eyes follow Ben's to Meiou's ring.  "Interesting.  Suppose that ring a clue to the past you've lost, Meiou?"

Igatho wonders why people would be scared of such a pretty, friendly thing. But she hasn't been bit by a snake before.

She claps happily for Jack's impersonation of her. "Jack says lots of funny words!"

To the focus on Meiou's ring, Igatho brightens up. In a tone that sounds like she is bragging about Meiou, she says, "Meiou got upset before! He smashed chairs and stuff!"

She then goes to put Preston on her shoulder if he'll let her. "Watch, Preston." she makes biting motions, then noms some of her food. "That's how you bite. Try it." she offers some of her food to him. Apparently, "he can't even bite people" was the important thing to Igatho. In her mind, the snake needs to be able to bite.

Tome Pact Pros: You can potentially learn every 'ritual' that exists, offloaded into your convenient object of power. Letting you save all your actual spell choices for cool things.
Tome Pact Cons: Oops you can only cast them AS rituals, which takes ten times longer. No wonder homebrew wizards and bards never try to steal this trick even when multiclassing into warlock.

"And I suppose Jack has a point about hybrid creatures generally sharing the trivia of 'except this is much worse'."  Owl + Bear = Three bears worth of danger. Math is hard in fantasy land. Even Dwarf + Human = tall and bald because ???

Preston returns to shoulder birdsnake duty, and smiles about as much as a snake can, om nom noming the offered snack.  Thanks, loopholes of food biting vs attack roll biting!

Even if Jack had a faster way to identify the ring, he'd consider it rude to make the offer now that Ben has.  ~I'd be happy to help.~  ~Well I'd be happy to help faster!~  Yeah no.  But bard being so limited spell slot wise, Jack relies heavily on scrolls, and they cost money.  Double the reason to keep quiet on that.

"Coincidence?  I suppose that remains to be seen.  Sounded to me like the ring cast a charm on you.  Though this'll be the first I've heard of an intelligent magic item that was kind to the wearer.  So at worst, it's a nice person that was trapped inside a ring.  I suppose you wear it on a chain because its too large for your fingers?"

No, I wear it around my neck because whenever I put it on my finger I enter the desolate spirit world, blasted by blue flame, and exposed to the massive burning eye of evil searching for me.  At least that's what Jack is half expecting.

He looks to Igatho, wondering how to gently teach the child that its not nice to bring up unhappy memories.  But maybe the more important lesson is about smashing.  "When a person is upset, it is much worse to hurt a friend than to hurt a chair."

He smiles to see her teach Preston how to bite and emulates the biting motion like Igatho does.

Igatho is squealing happy baby sounds at the fact Preston is learning to bite! "Preston is such a magic stick!"

Well there's always that - No thanks, I just remembered I can do it myself.

"Any luck?"

Jack chuckles at Ben's point.  "Right?"

And yes, he believes the big blue baby to be far more clever than one might expect.  As for just how subtle he'll be in mocking morons for being less clever than a baby, that remains to be seen.

"That's a good question, Igatho.  But accidentally hurting a friend happens much more often than you might expect.  I'll show you how it could happen so that you'll know a way to avoid it."

He plays a somber tune on his hurdy gurdy ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9t8TFGTAAoU ) and uses prestidigitation to animate cartoon characters* on the table that act out his story:

"Once upon a time there was a hungry child who wanted to eat right away.  Her bunny friend did his best to hurry up with breakfast.  But the hungry one was upset that breakfast wasn't ready yet.  So she picked up a chair and smashed it.  Pieces of chair went flying everywhere!  One piece even went spinning right at bunny's face!  He was super fast and ducked down before it hit his face.  But the piece of chair scratched his ear anyway.

'Ow!' he cried out from the pain, 'That hurt!'

But that wasn't the worst part.  His precious ring had fallen off his neck and dropped through the cracks in the floor.

He was angry and shouted, 'Now look what you've done!'

The hungry one was scared.  She didn't want her friend to think that she wanted to hurt him or make his ring go away.

'No!' she cried, 'Not my fault!  You didn't feed me!  I wouldn't need to smash if I was fed!'

But her words made her bunny friend sad.  'You think I'm a bad friend?'

Frustrated and sad, she cried really loud, 'Noooo!'"

The music then turns cheerful.

"Bunny used magic to get his ring back.  He even gave food to the hungry child even though she'd been naughty.  She said she was sorry for hurting him.  He hugged her and forgave her.

'I know you didn't want to hurt me,' he said, 'But so this doesn't happen again, be good and wait patiently for breakfast.'

'Okay!  I won't smash chairs when I'm hungry.  I love you!'"

*( I imagined Jack's story time cartoons to be like animated paper dolls.  Kinda like this: https://media0.giphy.com/media...73&rid=giphy.gif )
