Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Though the sun is not in the sky, the moon and stars continue lighting the way. All of the people in the group have the ability to see clearly in this dim light.

Up ahead, after a few more hours of walking, the group sees a lone minotaur, sitting in the center of the path for anyone to see.

June whispers, "That seems odd... should we avoid it or settle our curiosity?"

Fae whispers, "Minotaurs are powerful, from what I heard..."

"Regardless of what they are, most who plan on assaulting travelers on the road would not simply be sitting on it in plain view."  He's paranoid enough to be ready to light people on fire if needed, but so far only the goblins have wholly lived up to stereotypes on first meeting.

...Well okay, the Gnomes too.

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer nods.

"Since I'm the fastest in the team, I'll circle around and approach.  If it gets hostile, I'll run.  I doubt it will be as fast as I in this wilderness.  But if I can't shake it, please come to my aid.  Otherwise, stay out of its sight and I'll wait for you two miles ahead."

If his friends allow, he'll follow through and greet the Minotaur cordially.  "Greetings.  I am Archer, a traveler.  The night passed, but dawn did not break.  At least, as far as I could tell.  Please tell me...  did you experience the same?"

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

When Archer gets close enough, he can tell the minotaur is on the large side even for his own kind and his eyes apparently glow in the dark.

The minotaur slowly looks over and up at Archer. Then looks down at his hands. "They look like big, strong hands... don't they."

Meanwhile, June and Fae find a place with Lerkeeb to perch while they watch Archer. Thanks to the team having good hearing (it helps that the minotaur has a big voice that carries), they can make out the conversation.

Oh no he's quoting never ending story we're screwed.

Though as far as Lerkeeb knows, they are just dealing with a potentially depressed Minotaur.

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer is taken aback on a number of levels.  Bigger and creepier than expected.  Waaay less hostile than expected.  And to top it off, the cryptic and strangely terrifying question.  Under the circumstances and given the minotaur's appearance and reaction, Archer is wondering if this is some Sphynx riddle with dire consequences if answered wrong.

Or is this Baphomet, god of Minotaurs?  Was there a fight in heaven between Pelor and Vecna where Pelor was made to drop the sun and Baphoment wasn't strong enough to keep it from crushing his beloved?  What does one say?  Archer is feeling more out of his depth than a frog in the deepest trench of the ocean.

"Much stronger than mine, I'd imagine."

The minotaur says, "Archer... I knew Caelynnvala. You and your friends are on a quest to collect her gifts to your kind. But now, thanks to my failure, it may no longer matter. I hope you will find strength..... where I did not."

Archer is uncomfortable with this creepy stranger knowing about the quest and his friends, but there's no helping that.

"Thank you.  I am resolved to give my all.  If I may ask...  What happened?"

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

The minotaur says, "I fought Zehir. I did not know he had aligned himself with Lolth, who had already trapped Pelor. Without Pelor's light to banish the darkness of night, Zehir's power just kept increasing and was too much for me. Now I am but a weakened form of myself, entrapped here where I can do nothing. I am still bound by the ancient pact that proclaims I can not act directly in the affairs of this realm."

Fae cuddles against Lerkeeb's arm, greatly troubled. While obvious it would be because of what is being said, there is more to it; Lolth was mentioned and Faerema is a drow. She is beginning to wonder if she will never be accepted in this lifetime, even if someone saves the day... literally.

Lerkeeb hardly stops her, though unfortunately he is becoming disturbed by the circumstances himself.  At least bluff values help him act as a better comfort grip than otherwise, though.

"What is left you can do, or warn of, in these circumstances?  Broad advice is often outside of such agreements." Feywild legal matters are just, ugh.

Also, it seems there is hardly much point concealing themselves from the saddest minotaur.

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer is struck speechless.  It would be terrifying enough to meet with a fairy queen or some other ancient fey, but this...  this is orders of magnitude beyond.  Ironically, chances are that this means that Archer is less likely to be swatted like a mosquito.  He's quite relieved that Lerkeeb stepped forward and asked the sensible question.  Still, he's doubtful the minotaur will consider himself of any use so Archer's not expecting him to think too hard on how he can get away with helping indirectly.

Archer gives the minotaur a polite bow.  "Thank you for standing up to Zehir.  That you survived an encounter that favored the god speaks much of your immense fortitude.  Doubtless, Pelor's allies will inevitably confront Zehir as well.  Your eye-witness account of the rate at which Zehir gained power is potentially the most vital piece of information they could be armed with."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

The minotaur points a direction off-path and says, "If you take a side trek to the ruins of Narru, you may find something that will make things easier in the long run. But beware; for Narru is guarded by minotaurs."

He goes back to looking at his hands. "They look like good, big, strong hands... don't they." and he begins to dissipate into dust, blown in the wind. First his hands, then his arms, then the rest of him.

Lerkeeb doesn't comment for a long moment.  To ensure no bits of Minotaur ash get in his mouth.

"Well, not going to lie.  This seems fairly dire.  Unfortunately, it is quite difficult to run from an astrological event, so it seems we are stuck on clean up."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Witnessing the scattering of someone's ashes is saddening enough, let alone their final moments, let alone that of a powerful being regretting their failure to stop Zehir.  A being who could have otherwise out-lived the trees.  But all at once is just too much.

Archer is moved to tears.  He bows his head and kneels down to place his hand on the ground.  <elven>"By the earth beneath my feet, you shall be remembered."

To Lerkeeb he nods.

Fae frowns. "When left with the choice of do or die, I choose to act. Let us hurry to where he directed. Every moment, Zehir gets stronger."

June nods to Fae and begins leading the way to the ruins.

As soon as the others are ready, Fae heads off with them towards the ruins.

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Lerkeeb is less afraid of minotaur's specifically, so much as anything with muscles larger than most of his body hitting him.

At least goblins are tiny.  Nevermind how statistics result in them usually being able to bench press three times as his delicate Eladrin limbs, it is the principle of the matter.

"Let us hope they do not decide to add 'bleeding moon' to the festivities."

Archer nods and follows along.  "I suppose Sehanine would be a logical next target.  But without the element of surprise and having just fought major battles, I don't expect the enemy to find her easy prey.  I'm more worried that the Minotaurs will lack the sense to understand how important the sun is to their survival.  Perhaps if we offer them something delicious that will become extinct without it...  Venison for example.  Melora forgive me for suggesting such a thing."

When the group makes it to the ruins they were pointed to, they do see two minotaur guards. June grabs at her head and collapses. Fae rushes to catch June and gently set her on the ground. The minotaurs do not seem alerted to their presence yet.

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Lerkeeb assumes there was some form of psychic backlash, for it to only harm June.  Still, pulling back unnoticed for the moment for June's sake would be preferable.

Now, if the party can actually DO that unnoticed while carrying her... That is the tricky question.

Archer is very careful to watch for dry twigs and whatever else might give the group's presence away as he helps carry June to someplace where they can talk freely and treat her.

"What happened?"

He gets to work looking for injuries.

June answers weakly, "Psionic backlash... that place.. is protected from psionics. I'm sorry... I'd be a hindrance to you at this point... I will rest out here. You go ahead. Every... second... counts."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer frowns.  Not off to a good start.  "I'm worried that we'll be captured or killed by the guards, leaving June alone to continue in our absence.  If we instead stay with her until she recovers, then send an animal messenger to them, or perhaps a note attached to an arrow, we'll stand a better chance of surviving as a group."

He takes the time limitation warning seriously and begins writing the note.
