Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

By "startled", Serena meant she expected them to kill her for talking. But she doesn't bring it up. Serena says, "I wanted to go west because it is opposite the human settlement. I know my kind's reputation and I would not be welcome among humans."

Dandros says, "If you want, I could always go into town ahead of you guys."

June says, "It's fine. We can go and leave Fae and Serena here."

"It would likely be for the best if more than one of us took a look at this town, yes."  Besides, if they have a distaste for Eladrin then clearly they must be secret cannibals or somesuch.

Archer nods to Serena then says, "Yes.  And neither harpies nor humans have exclusive claim on being hostile to outsiders.  So though I'm not happy about splitting up the group, it looks like we'll have little choice no matter where we go."

He follows the others.

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

June enters town with Archer, Lerkeeb, and Dandros.

The people there seem to be slightly enthralled at the beauty of the heroes, but it is also apparent they are used to the idea of elves.

The structures of the town itself are... unusual. Rather than made from logs, they seem more made from twigs and kindling.

A smiling guard comes to greet the group. "Greetings, strangers! I am Lieutenant Danner. Welcome to the fine town of Twigsville!"

Oh that's right Lerkeeb is a CHA lock isn't he?  We suppose it had to go somewhere considering his people skills that do not have a DC attached.

"Thank you, Lieutenant Danner.  You do seem to be living up to that namesake."  Eh, it beat sawdust town.

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer thought his group looked rather unpresentable considering the hell they just went through.

"Thank you, sir."

He nods a bow.

"Can you tell us where Twigsville is relative to Arvandor Senadell?"

OOC: I forget if Arvandor is the location or the patron or what.  Insert appropriate location if not location.

EDIT: GM edited in an Elf City name. Arvandor is basically Heaven for elves; it is where the elven gods dwell.

Danner says, "I... can't say I ever heard of the place. Sounds elven, though. Maybe one of the elf locals knows."

Some minutes later, an elf local explains that Senadell is approximately 200 miles to the west and a bit south.

June frowns. "....sounds like we're pretty far from home."

"Inconvenient, though not as much as I was expecting.  Do you happen to know if we are on the same landmass?"  They should at least know that much basic geography out in the sticks, righ-oh gods that was terrible.

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer is relieved that there is a local elf at all, much less more than one.  Not to mention how helpful people are being.

"Thank you.  Me and my friends were apparently abducted and regained consciousness not long ago.  So we are without food and shelter with only our collective skills available to us for obtaining any."

He's hoping that his statement will cover a multitude of implied questions, like, "Is hunting forbidden or especially dangerous around Twigsville?"  "Is there some other way to get food and shelter here without money?" and so on.

The elf explains that there is work for capable adventurers, which the group look to be. The quests are on the local tavern's cork-board. He also tells where the local church is.

Lerkeeb sees that is a maybe for Archer's first implied question, and a no for the second.

This must be how most adventurer's start.  No applicable job skills for the local economy outside of smashing and looting in a (mostly) socially acceptable manner.

"Thanks again.  We came upon some wounded persons in our travels, but were unsure how a harpy or a Drow would be received in town, so the remained behind.  Considering how helpful you've been, I figured it safe enough to ask you if they would be in greater danger inside or outside town."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

The elf gets a surprised look at the mention of a Harpy and Drow. "Injured? Why haven't you finished them off?" he asks in a genuinely confused tone.

He pulls out some jerky for Archer and the others to chew on, having taken the hint about hungry and foodless.

"I understand your mindset.  Though I have found seeing one tortured by goblins and too afraid to even talk to us goes quite a ways towards sympathy." Well, that's the harpy covered.  No we are totally not avoiding half the question, our CHA mod says otherwise.

Archer accepts the jerkey with a polite bow.  He tries hard to keep a straight face but fails.

Archer frowns and answers, "And if she had screamed, it would have alerted the goblins to our location.  We were ill prepared to survive that many hostiles."

The elf is further surprised. "Whu... wait. A harpy acted sane and with some semblance of self-preservation over spite?"

June nods, "Correct."

The elf is just flabbergasted. "....and the drow?"

"We did have to assure them several times once safe that simple speech was not worth killing her over.  As for the Drow, whatever sent the rest of us to our own imprisonment grabbed them as well.  It would hardly be fitting for us to stab someone in the back after escape."

Archer was admittedly surprised the harpy didn't bite his hand and scream.

"Neither of them fit their racial stereotype, admittedly."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

The elf is speechless for a moment, but continues, "Be that as it may, there is a stereotype for a reason. No... they won't be welcome in town. You will be very hard pressed to find a town they would be welcome in without it being the hive of scum and villainy."

June says, "Figured. Still, we need to find them a home that is both accepting and a good influence. Else they will die. And these two seem like the kind who deserve not only to live, but a good life at that."

The elf thinks on this. "Your best bet is a gnome settlement. They are the most... accepting race. They'll even let their racial enemies, the goblins, reside with them if the goblins are nice enough. Find some gnomes - find a home."

Eladrin are totally more socially accepting than Gno-okay no, Lerkeeb can't even convince himself that for half a second.

"Thank you, we appreciate your hospitality and advice. I wish I could say such a reasonable answer would have been forthcoming back home."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer is disappointed but at the same time is surprised that he was so optimistic for a racially accepting town.  Perhaps because present company has been so remarkably non-racist, his expectations have been subconsciously rising.  But given circumstances, he doubts that his future includes convincing a gnome village to welcome a drow and a harpy into their community.  So no need to ask for directions.

"Does this town have any plans for dealing with the hostile goblins?"

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

The elf shrugs. "Goblins are not much of a threat to this town to begin with, but we haven't gotten any goblin attack here since this town was founded."

June says, "Well that answers that. So you happen to know a gnomish settlement?"

The elf nods. "Yeah. North by north east of here, there is a gnomish settlement in a cave. Just look for rocky formations in the woods and eventually, you should see a well-traveled path. That path should take you right to it if you keep heading northeast."

"Likely the goblins know better than to antagonize the local populace and target only people who won't be missed.  The only human among their victims isn't from around here.  Thanks for the directions."

"Well, hopefully the cave passage is somewhat clear then.  The last one we were in was not very pleasant."  Not like you'd be safe from random wildlife encounters outside of a cave either, Lerkeeb.
