Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer nods in agreement with Lerkeeb.  To June he speculates.

"I imagine none of our recent acquaintances will be interested in staying at a gnomish settlement.  The Harpy already indicated wanting to go toward a settlement of her own kind, the human will likely want to return home, and I get the feeling that the drow is destined to remain in our group until we fulfill the purpose for which we were brought together."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

"Those are all valid points archer. However even if dropping off Serena first was closer, someplace passing for civilization Faerema can actually set foot in would likely be a welcome change of pace for her."

He adds after a moment "As if we have more pressing engagements waiting for us anyway."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

"One way to find out. Let's talk to the others."

Once outside, June fills the others in on what's going on.

Serena says, "I... in truth, I'm not all that accepted among my kind. They think I'm weak. Too soft. But I keep thinking maybe I can reduce the amount of suffering they cause. I don't know. Maybe I'm too naive."

Faerema says, "I fear we will never see you again if you go back to your own kind. But it might be wiser to try earning a reputation among the gnomes so they can then earn you a reputation among humans and elves and such... let's all go to the gnomes."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer follows along, resigned to simply let whatever will be prove him right or wrong.  When he learns that the girls are considering the gnomish settlement he raises an eyebrow in surprised then frowns upon hearing of Serena's mistreatment.

"That you can hold yourself together so well after being tortured speaks not of weakness.  Your kid is wrong about  you.  Your noble goal is laudable and takes courage.  Faereema's suggestion is a good one worth considering.  Whatever you choose, know that I welcome your company.

"What about you, Faereema?  Where would you like to go?"

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Lerkeeb's Charisma modifier means he succeeds in not complimenting how 'soft' Serena looked.  Out loud.

"There is still at least, the practical matter of having nowhere better in mind to turn to.  If the Gnomes have their own help wanted board, then maybe in that case Faereema and Serena would have a chance to see it in person."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Serena just blushes from Archer's comment. "I... thank you. I do not know what I deserved to earn such respect when I was the victim being rescued and did nothing more than keep quiet."

Faerema answers Archer, "The gnomes are as good a location as any. Until we find the other pieces of the set, we may as well help Serena..." she glances at the harpy. "I would invite you to come with us on our quest to find more pieces, but you should know that you will likely meet resistance the entire way."

Interesting thing of note: The magic item group set "Caelynnyala's Boons" would benefit any non-elf a lot, and in some cases, just as much as an elf. Harpy with elf group would enjoy the individual items' bennies (though not the set bonuses since those only work for drow, eladrin or elves).

Needless to say, the human opts to stay behind and lets the group know he will always be grateful. And that if they needed anything, they know where to find him since he is making it his mission to stay put in order to help the town be rid of the goblins.

The trip isn't terribly far; only an hour's walk. If Serena is spoken to, she replies softly and with humility.

The group finds the cave and can see gnomes coming in and out of it like ants. One gnome (who looks exactly like the standard "garden gnome") spots the group and heads to them. "How can I help you bunch?"

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer doesn't like the idea of having nowhere better to go than a gnomish town, but has to admit that Lerkeeb has a point.  He nods to Serena.

"You're welcome.  You needn't wonder overmuch at a person wanting to cheer up a victim.  I get the feeling that if the tables were turned that such a small kindness would come just as naturally to  you."

Since Fae has hinted at the quest, Archer tells her the tale from the beginning.  He also thanks the human for the offer and commends him for taking on the task of seeing that the goblins are brought to justice.

At the gnomish town Archer raises an eyebrow at the polite greeting.  He looks from the gnome, to Serena, to Fae, then back to the gnome.

"With that question, one could say that you have already begun to be helpful."

Once again, Archer is relying on implication - that a harpy and drow being asked how they can be helped is in itself a welcome and comforting break from the norm of being attacked on sight.

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

You think Lerkeeb likes it? He's out in the woods instead of Fantasy Krypton with Griffon taxi service.  Just dreadful.

"Thank you for asking.  We are all somewhat displaced, and looking for somewhere we may all afford shelter between looking for services to provide.  Perhaps a good map as well, if available."  They'd still be overall lost, but knowing where things are respective to 'here' could not hurt.

He supposes if he had to, he could fund the initial room stays for his travel companions.  A hole in the ground such as this likely didn't charge as much as a proper establishment for an overnight stay.  They probably used normal ice to cool their drinks.

OOC: Griffon Taxi service is a reference to a suggestion to the GM if a Bardy perk for free in town transportation is used in Eladrin places or the Feywild.

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

The gnome smiles at Archer and then to Lerkeeb. "You've come to the right place! There is always room for more; both in our bed chambers and in our workplace! Come with me!"

He leads the group inside. There is a lot of ducking and the occasional crawling for the tallfolk, but the gnome shows them a bedroom with 5 beds. "Five beds! For five people! And these beds are even large enough to accommodate you!"

Surprisingly, he's right. "Here is a map of the cave. If you want to help out with any of the work, feel free to explore and ask around!"

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer is flabbergasted by the unexpectedly idea accommodations.  He had heard of gnomes being eccentric, but did they really keep a room for every possible group to show up?  "This room has 2 big beds and 3 little beds, a perch for your bird, a mini bed for your baby dragon, and a nice mat in front of the fireplace for you drake mount."

She shakes off the thought, figuring big bed suits small folk readily enough, and that it's probably just a coincidence that their biggest room happens to be big enough to accommodate 5.  So he sincerely doubts that gnomes will coincidentally have jobs available that will be perfect for the 5 of them.  Nevertheless, the man has been very accommodating.  "Thank you.  Your helpfulness is most appreciated."

Despite the odd number, Five People Accommodations is a tradition held across the world and numerous planes!... For some reason.  Besides, in this case larger customers can carry larger coinpurses, duh.

He accepts the map with a nod,  "Thank you, this is a most welcome change of pace."

"If you need me, just ring this bell." he points at some rope bell hanging by the door. "If you need room service, ring this bell." he points at an identical rope bell that is on the other side of the door frame. "Bye!" he darts off.

June looks the map over and says, "....honestly? I feel like just relaxing for now. After what we went through earlier, I think I'll take advantage of the gnomish hospitality for a day before I bother looking into jobs."

Faerema nods and says, "Relaxing sounds good."

Serena puts a wing around Archer. "...thank you for helping me." she looks at the others. "All of you. I just don't know what more to say."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer is very tired, but he's been hiding it well.  He tries to not let it show how relieved he is that June suggested rest first.

"Very well."

He was going to claim a bed but got a surprise harpy hug!  To Serena he answers, "You're welcome.  No more need to be said."

To the group he says, "While no mention of rent was made, I imagine we can expect at least standard rates.  I don't know when payment is expected, but 'up front' is apparently not it.  Perhaps we should learn about the locals' expectations."

"You said Thank You, Serena. Which is more than most people seem to know these days."  There is an unfortunately large percentage of people who get angry when you save their lives.

He looks to the others, then says "It would be sensible, yes. Though unless there is some outlandish price I should be able to accommodate us for some days first."

The girls each yawn in turn and June thanks Lerkeeb for his offer to pay first.

The three gals then each pick a bed and curl up to sleep.

The elves of the group discover that after only 4 hours of being in a trance, June and Serena are still asleep. Faerema smiles, watching the two sleep.

Archer also thanked Lerkeeb for his offer. There's a bed, so may as well recline while meditating a few hours.  After getting up, he spots Fae watching the others.  He nudges his head and heads out the door.  Should Fae follow, he'll comment, "Nice to see them resting so peacefully."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Peaceful sleeping is a good thing, a Harpy snoring could be quite destructive.

Lerkeeb follows out of the room, and nods.  "This is the first chance any of us have had for some proper rest in a while, so might as well let them put this chance to good use."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Fae did, in fact, fallow Archer out. With Lerkeeb joining them, she comments, "It's good to be in such a homely place. I really am liking the surface world... Back home, I would make up stories like this to comfort myself. Stories of a land far away, where I had friends and could sleep peacefully with them. They trust me enough to sleep with both eyes closed. It's endearing..."

She looks at Lerkeeb and Archer. "And you two. I was told my whole life how even if I gave my all to your kind, I would be treated as trash at best. But you have treated me as an equal."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Archer nods in agreement with Lerkeep and listens to Fae.  His brow furrows at the promise of mistreatment, but it's not like he can hardly deny that the warning was deserved.

"It doesn't hurt that my first impression of you was watching you aid in the defeat of a common enemy.  You had the option several times to focus on staying further from danger rather than charge toward it.

"There are still many differences between us, so I would ask that you not expect too much of me lest I hurt you when inevitably I do not live up to your high ideals."

Re: 01 Destined of Arvandor: Odd Kinship

Lerkeeb hates to admit he may not have been so open minded if not for the circumstances, so doesn't.  "I suppose it is always easier to assume such things are true, when you never have a chance to see otherwise... Though your talks do give the impression at least most of that is true down in the underdark, being so intent on leaving it behind even for being treated as trash."

Hmm, hurt feelings?  Or blood sacrifice.  TOUGH CALL.

Lerkeeb makes a good point, so Archer nods his agreement.  Fae's answer has him worried that she already feels let down.  "You can't make me depressed, because I already am depressed."

He considers it carefully and says, "If you expect the worst from me then I have already not lived up to your expectations.  There are a number of things I would like to do, but I suppose the most pressing is to discover what the locals expect of us."

Fae glances at Archer. "If my expectations are bad, then it is good to not live up to my expectations, isn't it? But you are both right. Let's see what the gnomes have to offer."

The trio soon discovers that night time is just as busy as day and that there are plenty of gnomes up and about. A gnome says, "Ohhowexciting! Theelfeladrinanddrow, wherearetheharpyandhalfelf? HowcanIhelpyou?"

Fae explains, "We are looking for anything we can do to help, since you all have given us shelter for the night."

The gnome gets excited and jumps for joy before saying, "Rightthisway!" and running down a tunnel.

Assuming the trio follows, he takes them to what looks like some kind of huge mound of trash. "Thisisourmiscellaneous. Needyoutosortoutthefunctionalfromthenonfunctional."

... Oh, so this is why Adventurers find fighting monsters preferable to regular jobs.

Lerkeeb uses his CHA primary to bluff way the urge to heavy sigh.  "Just what is your criteria for 'functional'?" because it's literally a trash pile.

He is so bad at being a proper traditional Eladrin warlock.  He didn't set the Gnome on fire for daring to suggest he dig through trash.
