Crystal Clear

It was a standard day for everyone. Farmers farmed. Smiths smithed. Store owners were closing up their stores, having done a normal day's business. And the local inn was lit up in contrast with the darkening evening sky.

A couple things set themselves apart as the evening began, however. This evening had a rather motley crew of oddballs at the inn; A kobold (kobolds usually keep to kobolds and don't mingle with outside races or outside towns unless they are invading), bold as you please, had come strolling in to the inn like it was normal.

The bartender, though surprised, decided not to make a big deal of it. After all, he had already seen a female shifter enter the inn. And here he thought seeing a dragonborn was going to be the highlight of his week.

A waitress goes to Mittens and asks, "...kin I get an'thin' for ye, ma'am?"

Meanwhile, the bartender is looking over the two lizard folk. Dagger, of course, can see there is a dragonborn, a fellow descendant of dragons, sitting at the bar. (Up to the player if Dagger noticed Mittens. She seems to be sitting off in a kind of "don't notice me" spot) "What kin I get fer ye?"

Right as he asks that, a sour-looking elderly man walks in with a little boy and has a seat, making sure the boy sits next to him and making sure to be near the entrance of the inn.

Mittens is wearing ethereal armor, looking rather epic and stuff.  http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net.../Spirit_of_Valor.JPG  Seated next to her is a little hodded person, face hidden by the hood and bandages.

"Greetings, citizen!" Mittens says to the waitress, "I am hungry for justice!  If there have been any wrongdoings in the region, I would know of it so the wrongs can be righted!"

Rhagar did not notice hot justice on the menu, hopefully the hairy lady is accepting of alternative meals.  "Cold wine and a hot meal, please."  He glances over to the Kobold, glad that more socially acceptable yet hard drinking races means accommodations for short ones to be able to see over the bar counter.

PS Dwarves are just hairy drunks.

Dagger looked to the bartender and gave a wide smile, being mindful of how the warm-blooded types tend not to care for a show of sharp, pointy teeth no matter how well cared for they are.  "Give me an ale please, and your finest.  I don't want some watered down barrel slosh first thing in the morrow if that's quite okay."  She looks up at the fellow reptillian and offered a smile, "I like my drinks strong."

Re: Crystal Clear

The elderly man who walked in glares over his shoulder towards the kobold. Then gets an evil smile and a glint in his eye before turning to Eli. "You hear that, boy?" he asks Eli quietly in a cold tone, "Sounds like someone has ordered what you're having tonight."

Eli cringes under his shoulders. "...p-please, dad... I don't like that stuff..."

The man frowns. "Nonsense. I'll make a drinker of you yet."

The elderly man walks over with Eli to the bar to watch intently what the bartender fetches for the kobold.

Meanwhile, the bartender does, in fact, mix up a pretty strong drink (And does the whole flipping glasses and such acrobatic entertainment). He can be seen mixing 1 shot of dark rum, 1 shot of white rum, 1 shot of spiced rum, ½ shot of apricot brandy, 1 dash sugar syrup, ½ shot lime juice, ½ shot pineapple juice. He then fills half a high ball glass with ice, pours all the ingredients into the glass and stirs it well and slams it in front of Dagger. "Here ye go, lass... the Zombie."

Even the elderly man raises an eyebrow and almost looks hesitant. But says, "I'd like one o' them Zombies too, bartender!"

The bartender nods. "Comin' up."

Meanwhile, the waitress looks down at Mittens with a chuckle and says, "Sorry, ma'am. We aren't the authorities in town, so we don't serve justice here. Just food an' drink. But iffin' yer lookin' for bad folk what to put faces-to-dirt with, I'm sure them adventuring dragonkin over there are likely to be able t' help ye out."

Re: Crystal Clear

The bartender brings Rhagar's order. He was distracted by the craziness. It can't be helped.

The elderly man doesn't seem phased by Mittens' display. To normal people anyway. And even to Mittens and Dagger. But Rhagar barely catches the slight shift of pupil size in the man's eyes, indicating he's at least a little nervous, but hiding it well. The elderly man gives Mittens an evil smile. "And harm the boy's father in front of him? Clearly, we have a villain among us. Well your threats won't work on me, villain. My boy is not as fragile as he appears and will likely crush you under his heal before you can harm a hair on my head."

Eli watches Mittens, looking worried. "P-please... d-don't... hurt my dad. He's not forcing me to drink."

Old man's bluff: 16
Mitts insight: 14
Rhagar's insight: 20, lol
Dagger's insight: 12

Rhagar can figure this much: Old man is intimidated by Mittens, but is an experienced liar. He also actually believes what he's saying.

Eli's bluff: 16
Mitts insight: 19
Rhagar's insight: 16
Dagger's insight: 8

Mitts and Rhagar know Eli is lying (though doing a surprisingly good job, maybe because he was already scared) about not being forced to drink.

Re: Crystal Clear

Eli is silent for the moment.

The old man answers Rhagar in a half-snobbish sneer with, "I already explained earlier that my son is developing immunities. This is for his good."

Eli says in a serious (if still nervous) tone, "Dad... if she's a ghost, there's not much I can do to protect you. I can't put her to sleep. I can't trip her; she'll just levitate. All I'd be able to do is temporarily move her somewhere."

The drink is strong enough to almost knock the kobold out on its own. The fact she fell off her chair actually helps her look like leaning back was what did it.

The old man eyes Mittens cautiously. "If you're so good at raising children, then he's yours for now. Eli? Stay with this lady until I come back for you."

Eli says, "Wh-what? Dad?"

And the man leaves.

She glances at the kobold.

"Need a hand-up?"

To Eli she shrugs and gives a sheepish smile.  "Hello.  My name is Mittens!  I usually harass much more evil types.  Like dragons and their kobo...erm...  bandits!  But part of me has a soft spot for young'ns."

(Shrouded) "You ruined my morning funtime!!"  She shouts as she reaches up as if to grab the orc's neck despite not reaching it by any stretch of the imaginination, and squeezes her hand in a choking manner. Some cursory searching later reveals the orcs hacked their way through about six people on their way to the tavern. Eli is only able to save two of them. The other four are too dead/beheaded/disemboweled/etc to be healed. None of the dead or injured were Eli's dad.

Eventually, there is nothing left the heroes can do and they find themselves back at the inn, where the bodies are already cleaned up. Speaking of, it should be noted, the two orcs Eli downed are quite alive and are taken by the local authorities. Eli is whimpering, sniffling, rubbing his nose and eyes because of the four dead.

Re: Crystal Clear

Eli squeaks as he's hugged. His face turns red. "I... really don't know where he would go." he manages to answer. "We don't have a home. Always traveling."

He rubs his tears away and says, "Wherever he is, he's probably getting in as much trouble as possible without getting arrested."

Then looks at Rhagar. "Everyone has different customs, Rhagar. But I will cry for you if I find out you died. Nobody else will; and that in itself is sad."

He then looks at Dagger. "Thanks..." then back to Mittens and Rose. "And thanks for caring."

The page he's on says "Draconian with Dragonborn lineage. Possible reason for not having acid blood." as the latest entry. But prior to that is an entry that says, "Kobolds can sometimes build a decent resistance to alcoholic beverages." and "Ghosts can kill you with fear. Note: Find a means to reduce or negate fear. Find ways to prevent ghosts from contact." The rest of the page is blank, as is the page next to it. Apparently, when Dagger started drinking, Eli must have been taking notes on a fresh page.

He ohs and says, "Actually, Longtooth shifters would be the tougher types, usually. Descended from werewolves. But Razorclaw are more oft the dexterous types; descended from weretigers.." his inner nerd had to inform.

Re: Crystal Clear

Rhagar isn't too worried about the random stranger hugging someone else, it's not the wings that are the sharp part or a harpy, duh.

Re: Crystal Clear

Rose slunk under a table when the harpy approached.

Mits wasn't born yesterday, so she's keeping a close eye out for hostility from the harpy.  But hugs aren't hostile, so she shrugs.

"Yeah.  After eating was what I was implying when I mentioned 'when she's ready.'"

Kyokuu awws at Eli's blushing and hugs again before carefully taking a taco up between the 'wrists' of her wings to nibble on, "Well okay!"  She chirps happily, "Mm what kind of song do you want to hear?"

Re: Crystal Clear

One of the crowd immediately says, "One about the local heroes!"

Another says, "Can't expect her to just invent a song right here and now! How about just a song of hero-praise?"

Seems the crowd is definitely in hero-worship mode.

"I would be perfectly fine with nice things about me being made up." it would be a short song, otherwise.

Short...  Like his wings!  Nyah hah!  >.>  <.<  I'm terrible.  But speaking of which...

"Looks like Ragar isn't the king of wing size any more.  So long as the song is pleasant, I'm fine with whatever."

I'll sing a song from my native land.  SCREEECH!  SCREEEAM!  Did I mention I was terrible?

Kyokuu totally has bigger wings than Rhagar, but he has arms with hands and fingers and opposable thumbs so.... yeah.

The harpy giggles and nods, munching a couple more tacos before singing The Hunter's Mark.

(Love this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOaCvz_kLFU )

Eli can't help but bob to the tune after a few verses.

The crowd, of course, eats it up and when Kyokuu is done singing, they all applaud!

Eli glances over to check on his companions and see how they each reacted.

Re: Crystal Clear

Rhagar liked the song, you can tell because he's actually smiling for once (well okay he was smiling when he stabbed that guy in the brain earlier).  The clapping helps too.

  "Well, that was pleasant."

"Wow.  Nice.  So I was wondering about what the bartender commented earlier about today being 'weird day.'  What's everyone's story?  I'll give my own after everyone else goes."

Dagger can't help but be impressed by the song.  as for her story?  "Me?  Well I just came here cause I travel a lot, and wanted to drink and have a fun time."

Kyokuu giggles and gives a bow before nabbing another taco to nibble on.  "I'm a traveling bard.  I go to different places, sing songs of happyness and joy and hugs and fun stuffs!"

Eli goes to hide with Rose. "I'll only tell if Rose does." he says defensively.

The crowd does look intensely curious about the answers of the heroes to Mittens' question.

Re: Crystal Clear

Rose shakes her head and puts her finger to her lips.

Mits huhs.  "So disparate collection of powerful individuals of diverse races converged upon this inn by coincidence.  Or perhaps providence.  Because it was just before a bunch of orcs decided to raid the place for fun.

"Well I was an adventurer of some repute.  Me and my sibs would travel about in search of wrongs to right.  We got killed for our troubles by powerful evil mastermind.  But mere death was not enough to stop our hunt for justice!  No!  Now even in our afterlife we do as we did in life.  Defend the defenseless.  Avenge the victims.  And so forth.  Didn't think this place needed but a little help maybe, but apparently much was needed and available."

She glances Eli's way.  "Beyond his rude dad who wanted to make him drink a zombie, I only know that this kid is quite talented in magic.  The kind that helped save many lives today."

Dagger hums softly, "Has to be coincidence.  I mean think of all the other taverns that gets all kinds of patrons of all shapes an sizes but don't become an orc stomping ground."  She shrugs, "I'm not complainin' mind you, made my day meeting all of you.  It's just that the only kind of providence that was ever taught to my tribe was serve the master dragon, or get eaten."

Kyokuu chirps softly at Mittens and grins, "Sounds like you've had an exciting journey full of adventures!  Care to share some stories?"

Re: Crystal Clear

Eli loves where the discussion with Dagger is potentially going. But doubts it will go there. "Fate is the kind of thing people have been arguing about for as long as there have been societies. Some believe fate can not be avoided. Some believe that only parts of fate can be avoided, but not the bigger parts. Still others believe fate is completely shaped by mortals."

Re: Crystal Clear

Rhagar thinks fate depends on how closely you are holding to a module or campaign notes, really.  Wait, no, that's what his player thinks.

"With or without fate, ridiculous coincidences happen all the time.  Though I suppose that is more likely than most expect when life is full of things that spit fire or ask the gods for dating advice."

Re: Crystal Clear

"Considering how most gods' relationships don't end well, I would think it unwise to ask them for advise," Mits says, "But considering I went to the afterlife and back, it would be kinda silly for me to deny the reality of divine influence.  I'm of the middle ground camp.  Some events are beyond even the power of the gods to prevent such as the Dawn Wars.  Others even a baby has the power to control.  Such as the war between the backyard ant colony and the beetle.  The more power one has, the more influence over fate.  I aim to gather as much as I can to influence history for the better as much as possible.  For example, 'In the year 1271, the village of Summersville was ransacked by a tribe of orcs and completely destroyed' became '...was defended by a band of heroes.'"
