The Frozen Wastes

The War on the Frozen Wastes

Tales of the Frozen Lands of Glaciem have been frequent of late, it is said that the village of Congelata near the center of Glaciem has received wave after wave of attacks causing the loss of many soldier and civilian alike. Notices calling all who seek adventure and reward have been sent out to all who are battle born and fueled by the blood of their enemy and sustained by the greed that all men have. Those who respond are offerd great riches and reward for the finding and ending the reason for the sudden aggressive nature of the Glaciem Populus that have since long ago lived in peace with those who dwell in Congelata. So tell me you who have travelled these many leagues for what reason have you ventured into THE FROZEN WASTES!!!  (Fade to black (lol)).

(Adventurers State your reason for this venture and connection to the rest of the party. Are you simply old acquaintances, seasoned adventurers who have banned together for glory and greed, or maybe something deeper. This is your story I am simply its Narrator, so come show me the way so that I may Twist and spin my words to tell the story that shall transcend time and be told through song for years to come and years to pass.)

"Mittens loves cookies.  So of course she was there when the cookie store was robbed.  Nowait, maybe that's not such a good backstory."

The eccentric catgirl seems to be trying to come up with a story to put into her journal.

"Can you guys think of something better than, 'She grew up in the most boring village in the world so she left in search of adventure in order to keep from losing her mind?'"

Re: The Frozen Wastes

Thirst for adventure? a little bit. Runs on blood? That's just impractical.  Greed? Well the way some people react to 'hey can we get paid now that we've saved you all from death', some would say so.  No, he has a much more daunting goal.  Some semblance of professionalism.   Clearly a futile task.

Kyle checks over his crossbow, and comments to Mittens, "Well, I'm sure yours beats if you were a blacksmith turned hammer wielding adventurer."

Re: The Frozen Wastes

Eli had come into the company of these two by way of his parents going missing. Until he finds them, he doesn't really have a home to go back to. But he knows they are alive and refuses to go to an orphanage... he has been to one already and it was worse (and scarier) than being out in the wild.

Normally a passive, withdrawn boy, Eli is immovable on his two tasks of finding his parents and not being taken in by an orphanage.

Eli hugs himself, shivering from the cold. To Mittens, he timidly says, "She grew up in a normal village, but knew that her destiny was greater by far; so she pursued it with outstretched arms and an eager heart that raced almost as fast as her ability to meet danger head-on."

(Ah so a tell of three it will be but what of the forth hmm I wonder who it shall be...... Ahh but I am getting ahead of myself. So Of the three we have a Man with a past not yet revealed whose goals are as shrouded in mystery as the tell that lays before, and to the Kitten that wishes to bear its claws do not forget that though they may be boring those roots are what has absorbed and crafted that which made you into you. As for the child lost and left to wander the path that shall no doubt lead to wanders, woes, fears, hates, and sadness.... Forever look forward and never allow those things that haunt the souls of corrupted and petty men slow your pace to the goal that lay before you. Now shall we begin....)

As the group converses trying to decide to camp or move forward for a bit longer the Sound of Metal clashing Metal Rings in the distance. The Hollow sounds of arrows pricing bodies rings loud in the their ears.

Re: The Frozen Wastes

As the party gathers at the neck of the path the sounds of battle rage on. To the front the can see a horde of goblins assaulting a bridge guarded by some soldiers and a Tall slender female with dark hair and a large axe which she is useing to cutt away at the beasts before they can reach the other side.

Gloria "Come now you weakling hurry it up if we falter hear they will reach the town." she raises her axe and brings it across the first two goblins in range decapitating them both.

To the left a large group of soldiers have begun to push a bolder over the cliff that makes its way across the battle field and into the mass of goblins killing a great many.

(Now adventurers show me your skill, show me you reserve the right to stand at the heart of Glaciem).

The remaining goblins turn in fear to run only to meat the party of adventurers blocking there path.

"Ah.  I see that the noble goblins who don't insult visitors are being cut down by the evil home-stealers.  Noble goblins!  You shall not be molested by the heroes you have not picked a fight with!"

She steps aside to make room for the goblins to leave unimpeded and asides to her allies, "How's that for discretion?"

But should the goblins become hostile toward her or her friends...  punches!

Gob 2 rushes mitts in an attempt to cut her down as he seems to be taking the lightly and perceives them as little threat. The attack is easily dodged.

The second archer launches an attack at the child whom he perceives as most dangerous.

Gob 3 decides to try his luck at the Cat Person but instead runs into his own comrade and tumbles them both over.

The Commander swings and barley misses the goblin as it ducks the strike. "Cursed thing why wont you just die.

Though not used very often because of the rarity of the stones it is useful to those who bear its stone. I know of only of 3 to have one, and two are no longer in this land, the third was lost at sea with a dear friend who died over 300 years ago. Hmm, but i may have had some stored among the treasures in my home should you find them they are yours. Ivon elaborates "Some as sad as it may seem do not wish to keep or do not believe they are able to raise their children so they are left to the snow and forgotten. Those who survive, through being found..."   He thinks back on the teams who complained that he wasn't kill happy ENOUGH, and as usual wonders why he bothers clarifying.

Oh look, Gloria really did mean literal wolves. Maybe.  Perhaps just really enthusiastic roleplayer trials sorts?  "I have noticed a trend for wildlife to be some of the more dangerous enemies you can face, so avoiding the temptation for them would be wise."

How's the injury level?  Artificers are even able to heal 'This has no heal surges' NPCs normally intended to remain low on hitpoints, but plot damage is another matter.

Tim did pass along you were 'so tired Nina's voice was going wonky' to be fair.

Though my luck with roleplay stuff does tend to skew towards getting overlooked when I try to interact with things.  Examples of overlooked actions include 'multistory cyborg fires it's godzilla plasma'.  So I couldn't tell a difference from usual.

Compare that to dying of cold weather. You go numb and quietly fall asleep.

Yeah. Eli is convinced Gloria is just acting tough or has no idea what a dragon is.

Re: The Frozen Wastes

Well, not exactly the way you want to start your day.

Kyle mutters under his breath along the lines of "Oh your paranoid to sleep with your crossbow, riiiight

He rolls out of bed, makes his will save vs sighing, and Heads for the door as Gloria makes her entrance and announcement  "You happen to notice how many, Gloria?"   It was probably a lot if she ran here, instead of sword first into somebody.

Re: The Frozen Wastes

Eli leaps out of his bed, beckons his books which then hover and follow after him, and rushes out towards Gloria, not too far behind Kyle. He hears Kyle asking Gloria the important question. Not knowing what in the world he is dealing with, he is quickly flipping through the pages of one of his books while running.

Mittens is first to see Eli rush past with books flying behind him while Eli is opening a book to flip through its pages.

Gloria is next to see Eli emerge from the rooms with his eyes glancing over the pages of a book... while running. And half a second after he emerges, so too do two flying books.

Eli can be heard mumbling, "One over two MV squared equals GMm over r..."

Re: The Frozen Wastes

Gloria turns and leads the group out into the battle shouting to answer Kyles question, "There are only three left but one of them is big as hell so watch yourself."

(Out into the unknown our adventurers push forward unknowing of what lies ahead.)

The Giant Frost Reaver rushes Gloria and thrusts his spear into her shoulder spinning the blade, "You will die this day."

Gloria lets out a howl of pain and grabs the spear pulling in deeper into her shoulder and her prey closer and into her range, "Alright Arora its feeding time." Gloria brings Arora down into the Reavers neck but the things armor keeps him from being cut, though there is a satisfying crunch as his left arm goes limp.

Eli stops his equation short when he sees the big guy and rushes forward. "Thunderwave!" and a loud crack of thunder flows forward in front of him, but only seems to ripple the enemies' clothes... and nothing more. Eli looks scared.

Re: The Frozen Wastes

Kyle fires a blurred crossbow bolt into the larger enemy's other arm, and follows up by throwing a packet of dust that burst in the air around the nearby enemies... Is that peppermint?

"She is not dying for the next few moments, at the very least."

End results:
21 Damage to big guy.
-3 melee to hit rolls on big guy (to end of my next turn).
Big guy and normal guy near him:  Not allowed to take standard actions, until end of it's next turn.

Gloria Buff:  +1 AC, can cash in as a free action (such as when taking a hit) to get Her surge value+3 THP.

Re: The Frozen Wastes

one of the minions tries to rush Kyle bus chokes and falls in the dust, and with a squish sound the party hears its own spear price its body killing it.

Gloria tightens her grip on the reavers spear not letting him move to attack, Kyles dust blinding and slowing the beast. She would need to buy him a round at the tavern later "Alright Arora second times the charm, DEVOUR HIM!!!" Once more she brings Arora down on the giants neck severing his left arm completely.

Mits points, and yellow glowing targets appear in front of the enemies.  She then creates a radiant bow and fires it at the enemies, downing one!

Re: The Frozen Wastes

Eli finished reading. "Sorry Mittens..." he says, "But it doesn't equal pewpew... it equals..." he thrusts a hand forward and starts circling clockwise.

A wind starts circling around the giant before a small tornado forms around him, picking him up and soon becoming a red tornado from all the blood flying around. The giant flies 10 feet into the air and then a black spot appears above the vortex... sucking the guy into it before all sound stops for a second. When the sound returns, the vortex disperses and the hole in the air vanishes. All that is left of the giant is the left arm Arora had sliced off. "...this. Um. I think I over compensated." he gulps, looking frightened by what he just did.

"Hmm, well it's properly contained. Only your intended targets were effected.  I'll take your overshooting over the alternatives, Eli."

He looks over to Gloria, and says "Just to be sure, is that figurative threats talk, or do you actually have a soul eating weapon?"  Said as he patches up her (thankfully limited) wounds.  He may be an Artificer, but artifacts can be pretty iffy when it comes to identification or even detection.

We're... we're not gonna get into the full technicals of why a wizard can't recognize the magic missile spell being cast rules as written.

Ivon floats over to Eli "That was an extraordinary show of control child and the amount of synergy required to cast a spell of that magnitude is not something to joke at. You shall make a fine Sage someday with proper training, though i suggest you hold back least you drain yourself and the spell tries to drain your life force to compensate."

Gloria winces as Kyle pulls the last of the splintered spear out of her shoulder and settles as the pain begins to fade. "No Aurora has no power to devour souls, she simply needs her fill of battle or she gets restless." Gloria looks to the rest of the party scattered around and then at the empty town. "We need to get those people back, there is no telling what the Queen will do to them. The armorer is over there, (Gloria points to a large stone building), any supplies we may need should be there. The local shops all donated what they had to spare there before most of them left, so that any who needed supplies could gather them faster in one location and so the town did not starve while trying to winter this war."

Eli glances at Ivon and ducks his head. "Sorry, Mister Ivon. I got desperate because my magic wasn't working at first..."

He double-takes. "What? I thought we just stopped the kidnappers..."

Eli heads for the store with the others. Upon seeing the inside of the store, he hurries to the nearest person. "Do you sell anything magical?"

Ah, offscreen kidnappings.  The fastest kind.  See also: Scales of war thread.

Kyle nods to Gloria,  "Merely bloodthirsty is fine, though I advise you void any sentient weapons.  When not trying to possess you outright, they have a habit of vanishing in the middle of a fight if you don't follow their whims."

As for Eli, he says "While I'm not expecting it, any residium supplies mean I can likely enchant equipment to certain requests if it is not conveniently located on the shelves here."

He turns to the glowball in confusion  "Just what half rate methods are you used to, if that is not only the first concern that comes to mind but one that does at all.

Re: The Frozen Wastes

The small women behind in the store looks to the group and rubs her eyes wiping away the tears. " You must be the adventurers that have come to help us, please I beg of you take what you will, but save my husband. He was taken by those brutes with the rest of the towns people and now there is none left to forge the weapons the soldiers need to protect us."

Gloria grabs a few essentials from the tables set around the room and looks to the lady, "We will return everyone, just wait and keep safe. We will end this no matter what, I owe the people here to much to allow more harm to come to them." Gloria moves to a stone grinder and proceeds to sharpen Aurora. "We will leave out as soon as the rest of you have prepared."

Ivon staying close to Eli offers advice on things that may help the young mage. "Remember child you have a much larger mana pool than most but it is not everlasting, I suggest something to store mana into such as a Fey stone if they have any so that you can store excess magic to use to replenish yourself in a prolonged battle."

The lady hearing Ivon walks to a nearby wall and removes a stone revealing a small iridescent stone and moves to present it to Eli. "This was something that we held onto for emergency, in case the shop ever went under. They are very rare and expensive, take and please use it how you may, jut please bring back my husband."

Eli takes the fey stone and nods. "Thanks." he says with a sad tone to his voice. He just can't be happy in the face of a crying woman who's husband got snatched.

He then finds and equips a number of other items. He's quiet throughout, mostly thinking about how best to rescue the people and what all they will have to face in the future.

Hmm, completely ignoring the call out about the whole 'life draining magic' thing.  Obsession with a young impressionable child loaded with arcane energy.   Requests Eli put said energy into strange artifacts...  Ivon is so going to try and possess Eli at this rate.

"We will do what we can to save as many as possible."
