The Clydesdale is a common sight along both well traveled primary trade lanes and secondary trade lanes. It is a simple rugged vessel designed to carry a medium weight cargo load over distances of 10-20 light years without need of extensive infrastructure, such as way stations and mid flight refuel stations.

In service for over fifty years New Clydesdales are being built by multiple manufacturers through out human occupied space. It's modular hull and internal equipment spaces allow for easy overhaul, and constant upgrade as newer more effective after market system modules are introduced.

The ruggedness and powerful gravimetric systems of the vessel allow unassisted surface to orbit and orbit to surface operations. the ability to operate in systems which lack an orbital transfer station or local interface craft expands the number of colonies and facilities the Clydesdale can service. This allows the vessel to profitably operate in many remote areas where substantial surface to orbit facilities are absent.

In many cases the vessels are modified by the owner to fulfill specialized roles, and serve as passenger liners as well as cargo carriers. carrying passengers decreases the amount of cargo that can be carried, and the bulk life support and supplies that need to be carried by the vessel to meet Interstellar commerce regulations.

The Clydesdale is also used by military and maritime forces as a transport, and non combat cargo hauler.  Armed variants of the vessel are also manufactured to sere as light duty troop transports and reserve force assault transports with smaller forces and colonial militias.

Using a Clydesdale in Games:

The Clydesdale is an upper end vehicle for independent merchants, independent ship owners and a standard for smaller shipping companies. Running routes between secondary ports and smaller colonies a Clydesdale can be used to give players a highly reliable place of business that is not restricted to one location.
Players  can form the core of the vessels crew, the Captain, pilot, Navigator etc...While recruited our preexisting NPCs form the bulk of the crew handles the mundane duties of keeping the vessel running and in operation.
Each player can take over one function of the ship, either as engineer, pilot, captain, or gunners. During inter system travel the vessel Players would be tasked with finding safe routes operating systems, and defending the vessel should it come under attack.

One option for use of a vessel of this type is as a subsidized Merchant vessel which runs a regular route under contract to a larger company. the crew receives support for fuel and operation expenses drawing a reduced salary, and shares of the vessels profits. ( after the subsidizing agency takes it's share of the vessels income)
This option reduces the pressure on players to handle the book keeping and money crunching to pay for every tank of fuel, or the spare lQk 115 Hyperwave modulator. It also allows crewmen to use the down time while the vessel is being loaded, unloaded, or waiting for a cargo to be prepared for shipping for their own purposes.

Plot Seeds:

1)Captain needs temporary fill in crew injured in an accident during last run Crew hired on but soon discover there have been a strong of accidents that seem very suspicious. Someone among the crew seems to be sabotaging the vessel and intentionally causing dangerous accidents aboard the ship.

2)A Clydesdale Running the secondary trade circuit is currently having financial troubles due to interference by a local corporation which has recently escalated to armed attacks on non corporate vessels.
The captain of the vessel needs extra crew for security, and individuals to find proof of the corporation hiring or encouraging attacks b raiders and hijackers.

3)While travelling on a small passenger transport a Clydesdale is spotted drifting powered down and abandoned in hyperspace. The hatches are sealed there is no sign of damage, and no one answers repeated hails.

The captain of the transport is obliged by regulations to search for survivors. He send over some of his own crew and volunteers. the search part finds no sign of distress aboard the vessel, and no crew. All security systems indicate no one has boarded or exited the vehicle since it lifted. there are meals on the table, tools left out as if someone was repairing a minor system. the only sign of disturbance is a single hand print (human?) in some dark brown substance smeared across the ships name plate in the galley.

4) the crew of a Clydesdale discover signs that something has gotten aboard the vessel.( slime, mucus, suspicious sounds of movement coming out of the bulkheads and ventilation ducts etc...)

the captain has crew and volunteers search the vessel, including work areas, access shafts, and the pressurized equipment sections not normally open to anyone during transit
