Re: The Island
"I've never met you before. That must have been him." Nelek touched the straight end of a lock of hair that damned merman had hacked off. "Onyi." Nelek spat the name. "He's been using my hair in some magic to make himself look like me."

Nelek gestured the girl to come closer, she was the first person he had seen in months, besides Onyi and Mazi. He wished she was Aislyn, or someone from his family and wondered why she was there.

Re: The Island
Ila thought about how Nelek's face had looked wrong and how he had been looking different since coming to this island. “You're Nelek? So the man who I've been with all this time was someone pretending to be you? Why?” Ila stepped closer.

Re: The Island
Nelek realized that this girl was only wearing a slip and blushed. Of course she probably swam here with Onyi, like how Onyi and Mazi had dragged him here through the water, Nelek did not think mermen used boats.

"I'd offer you my shirt," Nelek murmured, looking away, "But it's all rags and must stink of fish."

Re: The Island
"Don't worry about it." Compared to what she wore at Portside the slip was modest. Ila never met any men who were embarrassed for what she was wearing while working there. But then it had been a long time since she had met any decent men. "Really, don't worry about what I'm wearing. Why is this Onyi pretending to be you?"

Re: The Island
“To get at my wife.” Nelek's eyes filled with tears. “I don't know what he's done to her or my children... His king was her first husband but their marriage was annulled after he left her. I guess he did not want her to move on with her life. Have you seen her? Aislyn Gerthim, her maiden name was Buckley.”

Re: The Island
Ila shook her head. “I haven't seen her, or heard of her. But this Onyi is not with her, I've been living with him for months and it's only been the two of us. But he's taken me to Buckley Village.”

Re: The Island
“Her family founded the village, generations ago.” Nelek explained absently, then asked urgently, a terrible thought coming to mind. “Did he marry you with my face?”

Re: The Island
So not only was the real Nelek a decent guy, he assumed she was decent too.

"No, he didn't marry me at all." Ila explained. "He was one of my clients in a brothel in Portside. He bought out my contract so I've been working for him... and once the contract is up I'm out."

Re: The Island
Onyi had been using his face to frequent brothels? What Aislyn must think of him! Nelek felt violated. But there was not time for how he felt.

“What about my children? My daughter Millie is a few years younger than you and her twin brother Lek is a young man now. They both have black hair, Lek has his mother's eyes, violet. Then the littler ones, Kadelyn, Erich and Peter, growing up without their father...”

Re: The Island
The poor man looked so upset, Ila wished she had something useful to tell him. “I'm sorry, I haven't seen anyone. I've been living with him in Buckley Village but this is the first time he has let me leave the house. And then it was straight from the house to the beach, I didn't see anyone. All I've seen here besides him is you and his friend Mazi."

Re: The Island
"My family needs me. Tabor means to do them harm. Onyi may have already hurt them." Nelek hoped that Aislyn and the children left the imposter by their own free will and were not prisoners, like he and this girl were.

Ila wishes there was something she could do to help. She looked at the shackle on Nelek's ankle. Onyi made her wear a similar shackle.

"I can't even free myself." Ila said softly to herself.

Re: The Island
“But you are closer.” In desperation Nelek suddenly grasped Ila's arms. His grip was tight but not painfully so. “Please.  Tell them I am here. If you can't find my wife or children, Aislyn has a lot of friends and other relatives who will know what has happened to her. Her brother Aron runs the inn, her best friend Brighid used to run a blacksmith and Brighid's husband, Aislyn's cousin, Shawn Spenser, is the captain of the guard. Tell anyone.”

Re: The Island
Ila was startled by Nelek suddenly grabbing her arms, but at least he wasn't holding her arms so tightly they hurt, like Onyi did.

“I'll do what I can.” Ila promised, but she did not know if there was anything she could do. Onyi never let her leave the house and would not let her talk to anyone. “I had better go before I'm missed, or Onyi or the other one sees me talking to you.”

Re: The Island
Nelek released her arms. “Please... Tell Aislyn that I love her. I miss her. The children too.” Nelek could feel his eyes filling with tears again. He sat on the rock and tried to calm himself down. Mazi scarcely gave him enough fresh water to survive on, he would catch rainwater in clam shells he collected but there was never enough water, he could not afford to waste it on tears.

Re: The Island
Ila nodded and walked away. She was shaken but gathered her composure as she walked back to where Mazi and Onyi were. She gathered a double handful of seashells to explain what she had been doing.

Mazi and Onyi looked to be too deep into conversation to notice that she had ever left. Onyi's Nelek mask had faded further, now Ila could see what he really looked like. He was fair-skinned. His hair was honey blond and he had hard brown eyes.

“That disrespectful woman Liadan has a daughter old enough to wed. It will be a grand thing for her daughter to become one of our wives after our King's victory.” Onyi said. They all hated Liadan, that nosy woman questioned everything. If not for her stirring up trouble all the time things would have turned out quite differently.

Mazi threw back his head and laughed. “I can't wait. If only I could go to the village now and size that loudmouth's brat up."

“It is too bad that you were busy when the opening came.” Onyi gave the pot a stir. “It is unfair that the bakery stands empty when by rights it is yours twice over. I wonder...” Onyi looked at the pot, then at Mazi. “You could take my place. The potion will work just as well for you. I have told you all that there is to know. It will be easy for you to step in, and you can take over the bakery as you should.”

“I would love that.” Mazi grinned. “I hated giving up that bakery. During the brief time I ran it I had hired a lot of our people.”

“Having more of our people stationed in the village could be an advantage.” Onyi's face lit. “Working in the bakery would give them a reason to be there in case anyone wondered about strangers appearing in the village. They could have rooms at the inn, and maybe houses in a few other strategic places in the village. One could stay in the house I had been living in since Aislyn sold the bakery. Up to you if you want to keep this landwoman for yourself at the bakery or leave her for the next merman to take the house."

Re: The Island
“Let's do it! The potion should be ready now.” Mazi said.

Onyi scooped some of the potion from the pot with the spoon and held it to Mazi's lips. Mazi drank it and instantly began to change. His hair darkened and so did his eyes, his skin became more tan than fair, and he shrunk to Nelek's height. He looked identical to Nelek, or at least Onyi's guise of Nelek. He lacked the real Nelek's humanity. Onyi took the jug from his shoulder and began spooning the potion into it. Mazi reached under some rocks and produced a satchel.

“I still have the deed.” Mazi said as he slung the satchel over his neck and accepted the jug from Onyi. “Make sure he gets enough food and water so he doesn't die. We might need more hair.”

Re: The Island
Ila followed Mazi into the water like the voiceless cow the mermen took her for. Mazi's legs turned into a tail. This time Ila did not bother struggling as Mazi held her under the water and made a bubble and put it over her head. Like Onyi, Mazi did not waste any time with sightseeing. Ila spent the time thinking about what she could do. This went beyond her contract. She had to get away, and find the real Nelek's family to tell them what happened to him.
