After the Fires

Asher will rejoin the party at the Sparrow and Briar. Once seated and alone with the group, Asher removes the dagger, ring, and amulets from his sash and lays them on the table.

"I do not claim to be knowledgable in these things, but I belive this is a very good dagger. The amulets, we all know well enough, but, I am curious about the ring, do any of you know if it has value?"

Knowing that it is useless to return to his previous work, at least for tonight, Hau'dn tags along with the others, taking a seat at the table with them.

He winces as he sits down, "I suppose I should take a look at that." he comments half to himself as he glances down to where Garryn stabbed him.

The bard's comment reminds Asher how tenuous his grip on consciousness is. He looks down at his own blistering flesh and bleeding gash and closes his eyes for a second in silent meditation,

"There is no body, only Ki; within Ki there is no pain..." His zen failing him for the moment, he smiles to himself, "And with three days of bedrest, these wounds should heal."

Re: After the Fires

The common room of the Sparrow and Briar is partially filled with patrons, the various wooden tables occupied.  The party sits at a largish, hickory table scarred with small burns and the impact rings of long-ago mugs of ale thumped down hard.  The circle of faces belonging to the party members looks, in a word, exhausted.  Aine appears pale and haggard, her wounds still very much an issue.  Dominique also seems tired--although physically uninjured, the priest has utilized every spell at his disposal this day.  Caylin, somewhat singed, doesn't seem quite as tired, packing his pipe and calling out for another ale.

Hau'dn, his day spent poring over old maps and evening spent rescuing guardsmen and being thrown in with this motley crew, also looks drawn and weary.  Asher is another sorely wounded, and draws upon his monkish devotions to stem the twin tides of pain and exhaustion.  Villhalas is also worn--his intent scrutiny of of the necklace, ring, and dagger laid on the table is yielding little of informative value.  Garryn, with Caylin, appears the most awake and least injured.

And then there is the large, course-featured human who sits at the table--an apparent peasant that Caylin has insisted is actually Totmacher.  Since the party was led here to the inn by the guardsmen, no one has said a word, and only the deposition of the ring, necklace, and dagger onto the table has elicited any conversation since the party left the manor.

A large, corpulent man brings several bowls of a savory-smelling goat stew and sets them in front of the companions, bringing Caylin's second ale along with an unrequested second round for everyone else.  "Alderman's compliments," the man murmurs as he deposits food and drink, then moves away.

"Dom, I know today has been especially taxing on you, but would you be able to detect any enchantments on these items tomorrow?" Garryn asks the weary priest as the meal and second round arrive.

"Lets have a toast to well-met strangers and a successful conclusion to a messy affair," Garryn says to his companions, old and new. After quickly downing his original drink and setting it aside he looks again at the items on the table and turns to Hau'dn, "Now we have traded blows, and shared a meal, lets hope the future holds more of the latter, the former did neither of us any good. You and Asher were lucky arrivals and we are happy to share equally in our rewards...to that end I wonder if in your travels you've collected any lore that might shed light upon the value of the items we have acquired?"

Re: After the Fires

While the others assess the items he has taken from Zante, Asher turns a curious eye to the large, plain, human figure. Squinting slightly, head slightly cocked in wonderment, the monk tries to see past the illusion that is supposedly disguising the half-beast companion of the party.

Asher responds to Garryn genuinely, albeit somewhat absently, his focus on the plain man, "Thank you for your generosity; this adventure was a far cry from my life with the order, but I was oddly spirited away by the excitement of it. Will you still be interested in my helping you meet with Arkexis, then? I know his caravan was due to leave just a day or two behind that which I guarded into town. We may find him at the customs house as early as tomor-- Cay, are sure this is your beastly friend? I see no resemblance save the axe."

OOC: Sorry about the disjointed and somewhat interuptive post, I hadn't seen Garryn's post until after I completed this.

Re: After the Fires

The air inside the Sparrow and Briar is warm, redolent with pipe smoke, the smells of cooking, and the ubiquitous malty odor of ale and beer.  The strange human goes through his bizarre actions of draining his own ale, followed by draining Hau'dn's and proceeding to belch.  Caylin, his feet propped up on a vacant chair, pipe in mouth and ale in hand, merely chuckles.  Aine, looking tired but grim, speaks up quietly.  "If Caylin's right and you really are the half-orc...knock it off, we got other shit t' talk about.  If the archer's wrong, they'll be pickin' pieces of ya outta the oatmeal here for the next coupla days."  The ranger turns to address her comments to the rest of the party.  Now, what the fuck are we gonna do next?  We need supplies an' rest.  Does this alderman guy have some kinda deal for us?  Where th' hell are th' dancing boys, rivers o' flowing mead, an' general swoonin' accolades we should be baskin' in....havin', y'know, saved the fuckin' town an' all."

Asher and Garryn both relate that the sum total of 300 gold nobles have been paid out to the party.  Both the rogue and monk note that the alderman had indicated that certain discounts were to be extended to the party, as well.  The two consult with one another, and agree that the alderman's offer appeared to be somewhat along the lines of merchant discounts, subject to certain limitations.

OOC:  Your monetary rewards are relatively small.  The discounts are as follows:  each character may purchase up to 500 gp of merchandise at 10% of cost--meaning, of course, that you can spend up to 50 gp for 500 gp worth of gear...each.  Masterwork weapons and armor are available, as are many potions and scrolls.  Please PM me for unusual or exotic items.

Returning to the Sparro and Briar from a brief departure, Villhalas rejoins the Party.

Nodding to the barmaid for a fresh ale, Vil leans forward to speak - careful to keep his voice low so that only his colleagues can hear:

" I met with Savin just now.  Tot - you're a free man.  You've been cleared of all charges.  In addition - The Alderman showed no interest in securing the Thin Man's Wand as evidence.  It's ours to use as we see fit."  Loosening the drawstring of his cloak a bit, Vil continues:  "I should also note - that the local law enforcement has been bolstered considerably.  Imperial Guards have arrived - and can be seen around nearly every corner...  Savin was clear to point out that we would be wise to steer clear of any .. Mischief."

"It's getting late - perhaps we should divide up our bounty and begin preparations for the  Arillatoris Job.."

Villhalas smiles quietly to himself at the Party's antics as he finishes off his last mouthful of Ale.

"Well Hau'dn.  That is a good question indeed.  Aside from the rather Tactical view of 'Staying Alive - and keeping my Sibling here out of the Gaols' - we are on a Mission of Sorts, yes.  As you have come to find out from your travels I'm sure -- War Approaches.  And Where there is War - there is"  allowing a slight grin to surface here - "...Opportunity."

Thirsty for another Round, Vil nods briefly in the way of the Barmaid who has been trying to get his attention for the better part of the evening.  Returning his attention back to the Party with a light-hearted Wink, Vil continues -

"To be honest, while the events of Lanniston Keep and Borderton have proven to be entertaining Diversions, we're at a point now where we need to discuss Next Steps for the group.  It's timely that you and Asher have arrived.."

Leaning back lazily in his chair (and making a brief check over his shoulder for that Red-headed barmaid), Vil Continues -

"As for Me - I've had my mind set on venturing farther East - to Rimsedge.  To get a closer view of the "Front Lines" - as it were.  - That is, now that we have a Party for such a Venture.  I must admit, before meeting up with the rest of you, Tot and I were on our Way to Quektol."  Seeing a couple blank stares around the Table at the mention of this legendary place, Villhalas adds "..Quektol - The City of A Thousand Pleasures.  City of A Thousand Hells...  Tot and I were considering building a Summer Home just down the road at 'DemonsPlunge Falls'  ..Nice Place I hear.   Ignoring Dom's Chastising Glares, Vil finishes with a slight shrug of his shoulders -

Re: After the Fires

Villhalas manages to attract the attention of the barmaid, who, upon closer inspection in the dim light of the lantern-lit, is decidedly not as attractive as Villhalas first presumed.  More ales arrive, along with a clay mug of water for Asher--which Dominique reaches across the table and confiscates.  Pouring out the contents onto the floor, the little priest proceeds to refill the mug with water from his own waterskin.  Somewhat apologetically, the Palonish man explains, "It is less than adviseable to drink the water here, my friend, or so I have been told by travelers.  This is fresh water, graced and provided by Mithran magic."  The priest sips his own stein of ale.  "Ale and wine are much less liable to...harbor ill humors."

The party continues to chat quietly, after the initial outburst by Totmacher.  Villhalas' speech is met with mixed reviews.  Aine shakes her head, but says nothing.  Caylin's response is a soft snort, followed by the comment, "Yer owt yer head.  Only th' dead an' soon t' be dead go east, down these days."

The companions spend some more time in the Sparrow and Briar's common room, but soon retire--the day has been long and arduous.  A night's rest in the little second story rooms of the inn does everyone some good, and Dominique spends some time with Asher and Aine the following day, expending a number of Mithran healing prayers on the both of them.  The ranger and the monk both feel much of their vitality and energy return to them, as burns heal and are replaced with only a minor amount of shiny scar tissue, and deep punctures and lacerations disappear and show only a faint network of scars.

The following days fly by quickly.  Savin is true to his word, albeit somewhat distant when he encounters the party.  Training is provided--Borderton seems to have no lack of hedge wizards, mercenaries, soldiers, and knights of the cross-trade who would agree to share a bit of what they know...for the right price.  And it seems that Savin has provided the price.

Aine and Totmacher accompany an older South Paldorian man to the hills near Borderton, where they spend four days and three nights camping, hunting, and running through a series of combat exercises.  Hau'dn is accepted as an accompaniest for a Cazistani minstrel fleeing from the east, and spends some time listening to stories, histories, and playing music at the Silken Manacle during the evenings.  Garryn falls in with a blunt-talking human who had spent some time in the bleak lands to the northeast of Phanar, but who was skilled in certain intricacies of locks, keys, and warding devices.  Villhalas associates with an egotistical half-elf who claims that he is the second coming of the Demon Toad Xchoqualli'th'qua, and who enjoys throwing things at Villhalas.  Nonetheless, Vil is able to hone his skills to a surprising degree.  Caylin spends his time in the company of the Paldorian soldiers recently arrived in town.  Apparently, the halfling knows someone from that company, and hones his archery skills with the Imperial troops.  Dominique attaches himself to the small Mithran presence in town, and manages to find the time and devotion to examine the teachings of the quiet devotees of Mairya-Canha, the Amentos Spanta of Death in the Mithran pantheon.  Asher also accompanies the Palonish priest, and has a number of insights--both physical and spiritual--while training with a silent monk who reveres the Death Maiden.

Soon enough, the four days of training have passed, and the party meets once again at the Sparrow and Briar.  No word of the expected caravan, which Arkexis was to accompany, has reached Borderton.  The caravan is three days late, according to the estimated time of arrival from the Borderton Caravanasi's offices...but this could be due to anything...

OOC:  Post me with questions.  We're moving to the next thread.  Scott, please get Totmacher's updated character up on the RPOL site--you're the only one missing now.

Last Supper in Borderton...

After Spending the better part of the day - and his gold - gathering information, Villhalas searches out the Group.  Once found, he will call them into the Great Room of the S&B, - and invite each of them to break bread with him..

OOC:  #7 is of particular interest to me.  We should seek this "survivor" out..  Also - 3 & 11 are good little tidbits.  A meeting w/Caddis would be interesting.  And - I wonder if Lord Karr's Ceremonial Dagger bears a distinctive "V" etched into the pommel end of the hilt...  ;)

1.  Overland trade routes are increasingly dangerous, and no caravans have hailed from east of Deuxchay or Arkenhem for 9 months now.

2.  The last caravan to arrive was carrying a load of fine woolens from Arkenhem, a type of viscous, flammable oil from Narvil (Vil has, in fact, purchased some of this very stuff), and dried guano (highly regarded as excellent fertilizer) from the vast volcanic caves east of Deuxchay.

3.  The elves of Emnia have been raiding far to the north of their ancient forest home, but have not bothered the caravan routes so far.

4.  The Torn Tongue tribes have been active west of Borderton this summer, but the Imperial forces have stepped up their presence and fought a number of minor battle and skirmishes with the orcs.  The route to the west is safe...relatively.

5.  Caddis Mournlake has returned from the campaigns to the east, passing through Borderton and saying that he was headed for retirement.

6.  Tinker Dan was rumored to be headed to Rimsedge, in order to form a one-gnome caravan to bring goods back to the west.  That guy...

7.  A caravan was ambushed and taken not far from Borderton--according to a so-called survivor who is currently being questioned by authorities.

8.  There may be a whiskey shortage this season--stock up now.

9.  Some group of Lord Karr's men, led by the lord himself, defeated an orcish death priest and leader of an orcish army.  Lord Karr has the orc's head and his ceremonial dagger on display in his castle.

10.  The guy who plays dice in the corner runs a loaded game.

11.  Pyribrotos the Red--or another red dragon--has been seen, high in the sky near the caravan routes passing through the plains northeast of the Emnian forests.

12.  Several loads of good, well-cured lumber from the Leaflock are expected out of Cameron any day now—should go a ways to repairing some of the fire damage.

Seated at the table in the Sparrow and Briar, Dominique nods reflectively at Villhalas' information.  Upon Villhalas' termination of his revelations, the priest brings forth the dagger and the wand--both remanded to him as part of the identification process.  "My friends.  The pastors here at the Mithran shrine and library were able to persuade a wizard to use his arcane talents to glean information  on these items.  The wand, apparently, is able to cast the spell 'Suggestion', as if by a mage of the Fifth Circle.  My brothers tell me that there are six such opportunities to cast this spell within this wand.  The dagger, it was revealed to me, is enchanted and of a surpassing edge."

OOC:  Waiting on Hau'dn for the ring.  The wand is a Suggestion wand, caster level 5, DC 14, with 6 charges.  The dagger is a +1 Keen Edge dagger.

OOG: Retconning just a touch, this takes place at the Inn still.

Having ignored most of the conversation except for Vil's comments he glances up at the man, "I gather then, that is an invitation to continue our rather abrupt acquaintance with the possibility of turning into something not so hastily drawn together by need?"

He listens politely and then interjects as Vil affirms the invitation, "That is acceptable.  I cannot say much about the dagger or the pendants though I will continue my investigations later tonight.

"This ring though, see these etchings of the grasshopper and the kangaroo rat, the stag and here the frog and the salmon."
He points to each in turn.

"I once heard a tale and given the similarity of the item I was shown and the gnomish workmanship it seems to be marked by, I believe it is a sister ring to that which I saw.  It was a ring as explained to me that made your leaps into bounds, magicked if you will to truly improve one's grace and stride while jumping.

"A very mighty find, especially if one finds a need to suddenly vacate from a second story window after a night of certain delicate attentions."
Hau'dn smiles briefly, chuckling at what is probably an old memory.

"Either way it will have its uses.  I will confirm that it is indeed magicked later though."

OOG: The Ring is a ring of greater jumping.

"As long as he is not attempting to hide his trail and if one of us assisted the other, I believe it would be difficult but possible on one condition.  Unfortunately, that one condition is where luck plays a far greater role than either of our skill.

"For to track him we have to find and properly identify his trail, with the passage of time and the various other signs that would be left by the population in and around Bordertown that would cover up his trail, I have my doubts about our chances to truly discover the appropriate trail.

"If he was smart he'd suggest or allow someone to see him going one way and then double back at some point to take another direction.

"To answer your question though Villhalas, more is indeed less."

Re: Pack This..

The morning light has slanted its way through the smoke-tinged, thick-paned windows of the Sparrow and Briar--the early summer day promises to be both bright and hot.  The companions are seated in the inn's common room...an increasingly familiar locale to them all over the past few days.  Villhalas has indicated his desire to depart by nine bells in the morning.

The female ranger leans back in her chair.  "Yeah, well...  Not me, sorcerer.  No offense an' all, but you're not goin' where I want to go, an' your crazy talk 'bout headin' east leads me t' think you took a header in that last fight.  I've already come a helluva lot further than I'd counted on, and this ain't th' most...umm...reliable bunch o' folks I've known.  No offense, again, but that's how I see it."

Dominique clears his throat a bit, clearly preparing to speak.  Aine cuts him off, tersely.  "Th' priest's comin' with me.  We got some issues in th' towns along the east-west Imperial highway through the Leaflock, an' Dom's just th' guy t' give me a hand with some of 'em."  The ranger, blunt as ever, continues.  "Tried t' get th' archer t' come with us, but he said somethin' 'bout makin' sure th' big man don't fall into some dragon's mouth accidentally, an' that Garryn needs some lookin' after, too.  Couldn't understand th' half of it."

"That's 'cause ye're a tad short on th' *listenin'* skills, gal...yer uncanny *hearin'* aside," mutters the halfling.

Taking advantage of the brief lull in the conversation, Dominique quickly interjects.  "My friends.  I...I am sorry that I will not accompany you, but my duties lie elsewhere--both to Church and Empire.  However,"  here the little Palonish priest positively beams.  "I will not leave you completely abandoned, my friends!  My cousin...a good man and true...has come into this town as part of a request from a Captain Garlings of the Sword.  Perrato...my cousin...was dismissed from this request."   Dominique smiles again.  "Apparently, the good captain's request for my cousin was in response to concerns raised by Alderman Perysinos about this Zante Barbaras!  And we have managed to both capture this madman, and to free this town of the scourge of those fires."  The little priest clasps Asher's shoulder.  "So, my friends, the Captain has released Perrato from any service required, and I have informed my cousin that a party of good and true comrades," here Aine rolls her eyes and Caylin coughs discreetly, "require the doughty aid of a man of Mithras!"

The little Palonish priest takes a large breath and sighs happily.  "Perrato is currently staying near the shrine for the Death Maiden.  I have informed him that you wish to depart soon, and he awaits you.  I..."

"Come on, priest.  Enough talk...let's move."  The ranger grates out her imperative, but her voice is slightly amused.  "If you manage to survive," Aine shakes her head, "look for me...an' th' priest, I guess...back in th' regions of the forest--Woodshead or Greenbough, or near enough."  Aine stands, and offers her hand to the members of the party, her tone softening.  "Best o' luck to you, an' whatever gods you look to...well...may they look to you, as well."

Listening to Aine's departing speech, Vil nods with an understanding smile.  He had a sense that this day was coming.

"Aye - we understand Lass.  I will say though - your sword will be sorely missed.  The Best of Luck to you - in whatever Path you choose."  To Dom - "Dom, you've managed to keep us alive - through more than one messy encounter.  We are in your debt.  May Mithras look over you and guide you on your Journey."

To the Remaining members of the Party - "Well then, let's find this Perrato and be on our Way.."

At this, Vil returns to tighten up his gear while the rest of the Party says their Goodbyes to Dom and Aine..

"Totmacher will remember you as a worthy fighter, female" Half-orc good-byes are typically final.  Either due to a death or seperation caused by failed loyalties (which usually results in revenge and some more death), this departure puts Tot in an awkward position.  He continues, "bred from choice stock.  Totmacher expects that we will meet again, fighting side-by-side leading Da' Nogra to victory in the battle for the underworld."

He then pulls away a portion of his blood stained studded leather near his right shoulder revealing a jagged bulbus keloid left by Korkus."

"Totmacher does not forget."

The little Palonish priest turns his smile on the party, and says, "Farewell, my friends.  May Mithras and Vagrani watch over you and bear you to fortune and health."  Dominique sketches a brief benedictory gesture with his hands, and follows Aine out the door and into the street.  The voice of the priest floats back on the morning air.
